Compared with males, females had significantly lower hemoglobin levels (159.82 ± 11.56 vs 135.93 ± 12.62) and lower ferritin levels (113.00 [68.55, 185.50] vs 33.40 [12.40, 70.13]). Linear regression analysis performed in different groups classified by different diagnose criterion indicated that the correlation between MPG and HbA1c differs in different tertiles of ferritin (lowest vs middle vs highest R
= 0.507 vs 0.645 vs 0.687 in female; R
= 0.415 vs 0.715 vs 0.615 in male), and the association between MPG and HbA1c diminished in the lowest tertile of ferritin.

transscleral cyclophotocoagulation (MP-TSCPC) in healthy equine eyes.

Ten adult horses.

MP-TSCPC was performed on sedated horses in 12 eyes (4 groups) using the following parameters (power, duration, duty cycle) (1) 2000mW, 180seconds, 31.3%; (2) 3000mW, 180seconds, 31.3%; (3) 3000mW, 270seconds, 31.3%; and (4) 3000mW, 270seconds, 50%. Three additional eyes were left untreated (control). Eyes were monitored clinically until euthanasia (mean=3hours post-procedure). Histologic sections were assessed with light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

MP-TSCPC was well tolerated by sedated horses. Adverse effects were only noted in Group 4 ocular hypertension (n=3/3), conjunctival burns (3/3), aqueous flare (2/3), and a corneal erosion (1/3). Histologic scoring of Group 4 was statistically greater than other treated groups (1-3) and control eyes (P≤.021). TEM showed subtle changes to the mitochondria and plasma membrane infoldings of the basilar surface of the nonpigmented epithelium in all treated eyes.

Empty nose syndrome (ENS) is a controversial upper airway disorder most commonly associated with tissue loss from the inferior turbinates. The inferior meatus augmentation procedure (IMAP) has been shown to effectively reduce ENS symptoms in a durable manner, but the precise mechanisms that may govern this symptomatic improvement remain unknown.

Five patients with ENS who underwent bilateral IMAP via submucosal costal cartilage implant were assessed. Pre-implant and 6 months post-implant computed tomography (CT) imaging for each ENS patient was analyzed in a blinded fashion using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling to investigate intrapatient changes in airflow parameters.

Following surgery, ENS patients have significantly improved symptoms as indexed by Empty Nose Syndrome 6-Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q) scoring (pre-implant 14.00 ± 4.06 [mean ± standard deviation]; 95% confidence interval [CI], 10.44 to 17.56; post-implant 4.8 ± 2.77; 95% CI, 2.37 to 7.23; Cohen's d = 2.64; p = 0.02). Using CFD, asal airflow to the inferior meatus following the replacement of turbinate tissue volume in the inferior meatus via IMAP surgery, potentially due to the Coandă effect.
This study supports our prior working hypothesis that disordered vectors of nasal airflow congregate in the middle meatus contribute to ENS symptoms, not nasal resistance.
