Cocoa beans are the seeds of the tropical tree Theobroma cacao L [...].The desire to remain living in one's own home rather than a care home by those in need of 24/7 care is one that requires a level of understanding for the actions of an environment's inhabitants. This can potentially be accomplished with the ability to recognise Activities of Daily Living (ADLs); however, this research focuses first on producing an unobtrusive solution for pose recognition where the preservation of privacy is a primary aim. With an accurate manner of predicting an inhabitant's poses, their interactions with objects within the environment and, therefore, the activities they are performing, can begin to be understood. This research implements a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), which has been designed with an original architecture derived from the popular AlexNet, to predict poses from thermal imagery that have been captured using thermopile infrared sensors (TISs). Five TISs have been deployed within the smart kitchen in Ulster University where each provides input to a corresponding trained CNN. The approach is evaluated using an original dataset and an F1-score of 0.9920 was achieved with all five TISs. The limitations of utilising a ceiling-based TIS are investigated and each possible permutation of corner-based TISs is evaluated to satisfy a trade-off between the number of TISs, the total sensor cost and the performances. These tests are also promising as F1-scores of 0.9266, 0.9149 and 0.8468 were achieved with the isolated use of four, three, and two corner TISs, respectively.Fe3O4-Au core-shell magnetic-plasmonic nanoparticles are expected to combine both magnetic and light responsivity into a single nanosystem, facilitating combined optical and magnetic-based nanotheranostic (therapeutic and diagnostic) applications, for example, photothermal therapy in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) imaging. This clinical entity has been termed non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). The symptoms referred by these patients are both intestinal and extra-intestinal, suggesting that similarly to functional gastrointestinal disorders, NCGS is a disorder of gut-brain interaction. It remains unclear if gluten is the only wheat component involved in NCGS. The mechanisms underlying symptom generation in NCGS remain to be fully clarified, although in the past few years, the research has significantly moved forward with new data linking NCGS to changes in gut motility, permeability and innate immunity. The diagnosis is largely based on the self-reported reaction to gluten by the patient, as there are no available biomarkers, and confirmatory double-blind challenge protocols are unfeasible in daily clinical practice. Some studies suggest that a small proportion of patients with IBS have an intolerance to gluten. However, the benefits of gluten-free or low-gluten diets in non-celiac disease-related conditions are limited, and the long-term consequences of this practice may include nutritional and gut microbiota unbalance. Here, we summarize the role of gluten in the clinical features, pathophysiology, and management of NCGS and disorders of gut-brain interaction.The filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 produces, during the differentiation of heterocysts, a short peptide PatS and a protein HetN, both containing an RGSGR pentapeptide essential for activity. Both act on the master regulator HetR to guide heterocyst pattern formation by controlling the binding of HetR to DNA and its turnover. A third small protein, PatX, with an RG(S/T)GR motif is present in all HetR-containing cyanobacteria. In a nitrogen-depleted medium, inactivation of patX does not produce a discernible change in phenotype, but its overexpression blocks heterocyst formation. Mutational analysis revealed that PatX is not required for normal intercellular signaling, but it nonetheless is required when PatS is absent to prevent rapid ectopic differentiation. Deprivation of all three negative regulators-PatS, PatX, and HetN-resulted in synchronous differentiation. However, in a nitrogen-containing medium, such deprivation leads to extensive fragmentation, cell lysis, and aberrant differentiation, while either PatX or PatS as the sole HetR regulator can establish and maintain a semiregular heterocyst pattern. These results suggest that tight control over HetR by PatS and PatX is needed to sustain vegetative growth and regulated development. The mutational analysis has been interpreted in light of the opposing roles of negative regulators of HetR and the positive regulator HetL.Spatiotemporal models are a popular tool for urban traffic forecasting, and their correct specification is a challenging task. Temporal aggregation of traffic sensor data series is a critical component of model specification, which determines the spatial structure and affects models' forecasting accuracy. Through extensive experiments with real-world data, we investigated the effects of the selected temporal aggregation level for forecasting performance of different spatiotemporal model specifications. A set of analysed models include travel-time-based and correlation-based spatially restricted vector autoregressive models, compared to classical univariate and multivariate time series models. Research experiments are executed in several dimensions temporal aggregation levels, forecasting horizons (one-step and multi-step forecasts), spatial complexity (sequential and complex spatial structures), the spatial restriction approach (unrestricted, travel-time-based and correlation-based), and series transformation (original and detrended traffic volumes).
