STUDY DESIGN Randomised and controlled experiments on severe asthmatic research animals. METHODS Severe asthmatic horses in exacerbation were administered 200 mg of MPA either intramuscularly (n = 6) or via intra-articular injections in the tarsocrural joints (n = 6; 100 mg/joint). Serum cortisol concentration and pulmonary function was measured for 8 days. RESULTS A significant decrease in pulmonary resistance in the IA group (p = 0.003, mean diff 1.14) on day 1 in comparison with baseline was observed. A significant decrease from baseline was also observed on serum cortisol values in the IA group 6 hours after injection (p=0.001, mean diff 44.5), and at day 1 (p=0.003, mean diff 45.1). MAIN LIMITATIONS Joint health was not evaluated in the current study and the physiological response of the severe asthmatic horses might deviate from that of the milder forms of asthma. Previous studies have shown that type of anastomosis (handsewn or stapled) is a major risk factor for anastomotic leakage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical impact of anastomotic leakage depending on the type of anastomotic technique (handsewn versus stapled). METHODS This was an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study. Data were collected at two major hospitals in Spain from January 2010 to December 2016. Patients had elective right colectomy for cancer with handsewn or stapled ileo-colic anastomosis. The main outcome was grading of post-operative treatments needed to manage anastomotic leakage according to two major classification systems. The other outcomes were demographics, time of hospitalization, and death rate. RESULTS Patients (n=961) underwent elective surgery for neoplasia of the right colon. Anastomotic leakage was diagnosed in 116 patients (12.07%). Patients with handsewn anastomosis had more Type IIIA surgical complications and received milder treatments than patients with stapled anastomosis who had more Type IIIB complications and more re-laparotomies (p=0.004). The clinical impact of anastomotic leakage was significantly more severe (Grade C) in patients with stapled anastomosis than in patients with a handsewn anastomosis (p=0.007). No differences were found for hospital stay of patients with anastomotic leakage depending on the type of anastomosis (p=0.275). Death due to anastomotic leakage was similar in both groups. Timely diagnosis of TFB is important for decreasing the mortality rate and the incidence of complications. Because of advances in radiology, multi-slice spiral computed tomography (****) has become the best technique for diagnosing TFB. METHODS We performed a retrospective study over 5 years from July 2008 to June 2013. We collected information on children who were diagnosed with a TFB by bronchoscopy and analyzed age, sex, location, type of foreign body, and various **** manifestations. RESULTS A total of 382 children were included and 68.6% of them were aged 1 to less then 2 years old. The majority (95.8%) of aspirated foreign bodies were vegetation items, and nearly half (47.6%) of them were peanut kernels, followed by sunflower seeds (26.2%). A total of 4.7% of TFBs were in the trachea, 51.0% were in the left main bronchus, and 44.2% were in the right main bronchus. Moist soil seed (MSS) wetland plants are now produced by mimicking seasonal flooding in managed wetlands to provide an essential food resource for waterfowl. Managers need MSS plant area and productivity estimates to support waterfowl conservation, yet this remains unknown at the landscape scale. Also the effects of recent drought on MSS plants have not been quantified. We generated Landsat-derived estimates of extents and productivity (seed yield or its proxy, the green chlorophyll index) of major MSS plants including watergrass (Echinochloa crusgalli) and smartweed (Polygonum spp.) (WGSW), and swamp timothy (Crypsis schoenoides) (ST) in all Central Valley managed wetlands from 2007-2017. We tested the effects of water year, land ownership and region on plant area and productivity with a multifactor nested analysis of variance. For the San Joaquin Valley we explored the association between water year and water supply, and we developed metrics to support management decisions.
