The early detection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a complex clinical obstacle yet is key to improving the overall likelihood of patient survival. Current and prospective carbohydrate biomarkers carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and sialylated tumor-related antigen (sTRA) are sufficient for surveilling disease progression yet are not approved for delineating PDAC from other abdominal cancers and noncancerous pancreatic pathologies. Sepsis impairs the function of the intestinal barrier through neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-induced activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) is involved in NET formation. Ethyl pyruvate (EP), a potent and effective ROS scavenger, ameliorates sepsis-associated intestinal barrier dysfunction, but the detailed mechanism is unknown. The current study aimed to explore the eff ;ects of EP on sepsis-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction and whether ROS and NETs were involved.
A sepsis model was induced in **** by intraperitoneal injection of LPS (10 mg/kg). The **** were divided into 4 groups (1) sham group; (2) LPS group; (3) DNase-1 + LPS group; and (4) EP + LPS group. EP or DNase-1 was intraperitoneally injected after the LPS model was established. After 24 h, the small intestine and blood were collected for analysis. Human neutrophils were harvested and incubated with phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA) or PMA + EP, and ROS and NET generation was measured.
EP significantly decreased proinflammatory cytokines and MPO-DNA in the LPS model. In addition, EP suppressed NET formation in the intestines of endotoxemic ****. The decrease in NETs induced by EP or DNase-1 alleviated histopathological damage, intestinal cell apoptosis and increased tight junction expression. In vitro, the treatment of EP abolished PMA-induced ROS production and NET formation which could be reversed by H

treatment. Meanwhile, EP also abolished MAPK ERK1/2 and p38 activation during PMA-induced NET formation.

Mercuric chloride (mercury (II) chloride) belongs to inorganic mercury compounds characterized by good water solubility and associated high toxicity. The paper describes an unusual case of intranasal intoxication with corrosive sublimate confused with cocaine by a young male.
Intranasal administration of corrosive sublimate caused severe local symptoms of chemical burn within the nasal cavity. From the 2nd day the patient developed symptoms of renal dysfunction with transient polyuria and serum retention of nitrogen metabolites. The patient was undergoing chelation therapy with DMPS, N-acetylcysteine and d-penicyllamine. Four procedures of haemodialysis were performed with simultaneous DMPS and N-acetylcysteine treatment. The urine mercury level on the first day of hospitalization was 1989 μg/L, and after 26 days of treatment returned to the physiological level. During treatment renal function was normalized, the patient was discharged in general good condition.

Vertical transmission during pregnancy is rare occurring in less than 1% of cases but for those with active lesions or shedding the virus asymptomatically the risk of vertical transmission intrapartum is high. Neonates with HSV may develop severe consequences such as disseminated, central nervous system and skin, eye mouth/mucous disease or suffer mortality. A high index of suspicion, timely diagnosis and institution of appropriate treatment during acute and recurrent episodes will reduce the risk of vertical transmission and therefore neonatal consequences. Routine screening for HSV in pregnancy is not recommended. This review provides an overview of HSV in pregnancy, diagnosis and management especially around unique scenarios such as prelabour preterm rupture of fetal membranes and presentation with active disease in labour.
