Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the most common metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) procedure in adolescents and adults. Only few studies have assessed bone outcomes following SG and it is unknown whether skeletal changes differ by age group. Recent studies have identified marrow adipose tissue (MAT) as a novel biomarker for bone quality with studies in adults showing high MAT in those with visceral adiposity and a reciprocal increase in MAT with bone loss.
To determine the impact of SG on volumetric BMD (vBMD) and MAT in adolescents and adults with obesity. We hypothesized that SG would lead to a decrease in vBMD and increase in MAT but that these changes would be less pronounced in adolescents compared to adults.
The study was IRB-approved and HIPAA-compliant. Written informed consent/assent was obtained. We examined 10 adolescents (mean age 17.8±2.5years, mean BMI 43.5±5.6kg/m
) and 10 sex, race, and BMI-matched adults (mean age 49.5±13.6years, mean BMI 43.7±5.9kg/m
), before and 12months after SG. At change in MAT (p≤0.042). 12-month percent change in MAT was positively associated with 12-month % change in SAT in adolescents and 12-month percent change in VAT in adults (p≤0.045).
SG in adolescents and adults with severe obesity is associated with a reduction in lumbar vBMD and an increase in lumbar MAT, although the reduction in adolescents did not reach statistical significance, with no significant differences in these endpoints between groups. Our results suggest detrimental effects of bariatric surgery on bone for patients across the life span.

This paper presents a concise review on the use of selenium for bone cancer applications, discussing main synthesis methods, biocompatibility, and cytotoxicity aspects and the combination of selenium with a wide range of ceramics, metals, and polymers. Future perspectives and the novel concept of a dual-functional scaffold for both cancer treatment and new bone regeneration are also discussed.
Identifying predictive factors for a normal outcome at admission in the labor ward would be of value for planning labor care, timing interventions and in preventing labor dystocia. Clinical assessments of fetal head station and position at the start of labor have some predictive value but the value of ultrasound methods for this purpose has not been investigated. Studies using transperineal ultrasound before labor onset show possibilities of using these methods to predict outcome.
To investigate if ultrasound measurements during the first examination in the active phase of labor were associated with the duration of labor phases and the need for operative delivery.
This was a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study at Landspitali University Hospital, Reykjavik, Iceland. Nulliparous women at ≥37 weeks with a single fetus in cephalic presentation and spontaneous labor onset were eligible. The recruitment period was from January 2016 to April 2018. Women were examined by a midwife on admission and with the duration of labor but measurements of fetal head station were the variables best associated with operative deliveries.

In the allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) setting, clonal hematopoiesis (CH) mutations present in donor stem cells can be transferred to recipients at the time of HCT. Given that the consequences of donor-derived CH in HCT recipients are not entirely clear, we sought to investigate clinical outcomes in patients with engrafted donor-derived CH using a matched cohort analysis of both related and unrelated donors. Of 209 patients with next-generation sequencing performed before and after HCT, donor-derived CH mutations were detected in 15 (5.2%). DNMT3A was the most commonly mutated gene (9 of 15; 60%); mutations in SF3B1, CSF3R, STAT3, CBLB, TET2, and ASXL1 were also identified. Donor-derived CH was not associated with delayed neutrophil or platelet engraftment, and there was no impact on conversion to full donor chimerism.
