We show that components of alarm pheromones are similar across many insects, although aphids exhibit different behavioral responses to alarm cues compared to social insects. The effects of alarm pheromones on prey behavior depend on factors such as the concentration of pheromones and the density of conspecifics. We also discuss the molecular mechanisms of alarm pheromone perception underlying the evolutionary arms race between predators and prey, and the function of olfactory proteins and receptors in particular. Our review provides a novel synthesis of the diversity and function of insect alarm pheromones, while suggesting avenues that might better allow researchers to exploit population-level responses to alarm signaling for the sustainable management of pests and vector-borne pathogens.
Quantify the proportional increase in gestational diabetes (GDM) prevalence when implementing the new International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) criteria compared to prior GDM criteria, and to assess risk factors that might affect the change in prevalence.
A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed of cohort and cross-sectional studies between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2018 among pregnant women with GDM using IADPSG criteria compared to, and stratified by, old GDM criteria. Web of science, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Open Grey and Grey literature reports were included. The IADPSG criteria increase the prevalence of GDM, but allow movement towards more homogeneity. More studies are needed of the benefits, harms, psychological effects and health costs of implementing the IADPSG criteria.

There is sufficient scientific evidence for the bidirectional association between periodontal diseases and diabetes. In this context, we hypothesized that periodontal treatment leads to lower healthcare costs in newly diagnosed diabetes patients by promoting a milder disease course.
A total of 23,771 persons were investigated who were continuously insured by German health insurances between 2011 and 2016, 18years or older, and newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2013. The study population was divided into a periodontal treatment and control group (no periodontal treatment). The average treatment effect of a periodontal treatment on various types of healthcare costs (inpatient, outpatient, drug costs) was analyzed by a doubly robust method.
Finally, 5.3% of the study population could be assigned to the treatment group. In newly diagnosed diabetes patients with periodontal treatment, a reduction in total healthcare costs (0.96, 95%CI 0.89; 1.04), inpatient costs (0.87, 95%CI 0.69; 1.08), diabetes-related drug costs (0.93, 95%CI 0.84; 1.03) and other drug costs (0.97, 95%CI 0.89; 1.05) could be shown compared to the control group.
This study provides evidence that periodontal treatment for diabetes patients reduces healthcare costs. Fewer diabetes-specific complications and hospitalizations are expected.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) and non-randomized studies (NRS) to assess the effectiveness and equity of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSII) versus multiple-daily injections (MDI) on glycemic outcomes.
Searches were conducted between 2000 and 2019 in MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE and HTA. Included studies compared the CSII vs MDI in children and young people (CYP)≤20years with type 1 diabetes. Two independent reviewers screened the articles, extracted the data, assessed the risk of bias, evaluated the quality of evidence, and identified equity data. Results were pooled with a random-effects model.
Of the 578 articles screened, 16 RCT (545 CYP on CSII) and 70 NRS (73253 on CSII) were included in the meta-analysis. There was moderate-level evidence that the CSII lower HbA
in RCT (pooled mean difference [MD] -0.22%; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.33, -0.11%; I
34%) and insufficient in NRS (pooled MD -0.45%; 95%CI -0.52, -0.38%; I
99%). The pooled incidence rate ratio of severe hypoglycemia on CSII vs MDI in RCT was 0.87 (95%CI 0.55, 1.37; I
