The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of sequence data in Saanen goats (n = 33) to better capture a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 19 (CHI19) and improve the accuracy of predictions for 3 milk production traits, 5 type traits, and somatic cell scores. All 1,207 50K genotypes were imputed to the sequence level. Four scenarios, each using a subset of CHI19 imputed variants, were then tested. Sequence-derived information included all CHI19 variants (529,576), all variants in the QTL region (22,269), 178 variants selected in the QTL region and added to an updated chip, or 178 randomly selected variants on CHI19. Two genomic evaluation models were applied single-step genomic BLUP and weighted single-step genomic BLmic evaluations represents a promising perspective for such evaluations in dairy goats. Furthermore, using only a limited number of selected variants in QTL regions, as available on SNP chip updates, significantly increases the accuracy for QTL-associated traits without deteriorating the evaluation accuracy for other traits. The latter approach is interesting, as it avoids time-consuming imputation and data formatting processes and provides reliable genotypes.The objectives of the study were to use a heat stress scoring system to evaluate the severity of heat stress on dairy cows using different heat abatement techniques. The scoring system ranged from 1 to 4, where 1 = no heat stress; 2 = mild heat stress; 3 = severe heat stress; and 4 = moribund. The accuracy of the scoring system was then predicted using 3 machine learning techniques logistic regression, Gaussian naïve Bayes, and random forest. To predict the accuracy of the scoring system, these techniques used factors including temperature-humidity index, respiration rate, lying time, lying bouts, total steps, drooling, open-mouth breathing, panting, location in shade or sprinklers, somatic cell score, reticulorumen temperature, hygiene body condition score, milk yield, and milk fat and protein percent. Three different treatments, namely, portable shade structure, portable polyvinyl chloride pipe sprinkler system, or control with no heat abatement, were considered, where each treatment was replicated 3 times with 3 second-trimester lactating cows. Results indicate that random forest outperformed the other 2 methods, with respect to both accuracy and precision, in predicting the sprinkler group's score. Both logistic regression and random forest were consistent in predicting scores for control, shade, and combined groups. The mean probability of predicting non-heat-stressed cows was highest for cows in the sprinkler group. Finally, the logistic regression method worked best for predicting heat-stressed cows in control, shade, and combined. The insights gained from these results could aid dairy producers to detect heat stress before it becomes severe, which could decrease the negative effects of heat stress, such as milk loss.α-1-Acid glycoprotein (AGP) is an acute-phase protein that may suppress dry matter intake (DMI), potentially by acting on the leptin receptor in the hypothalamus. Our objectives were to characterize plasma AGP concentration and associations with DMI during the transition period, and to determine the utility of AGP to identify or predict cows with low DMI. Plasma samples (n = 2,086) from 434 Holstein cows in 6 studies were analyzed on d -21, -13 ± 2, -3, 1, 3, 7 ± 1, 14 ± 1, and 21 ± 1 relative to parturition. A commercially available ELISA kit specific for bovine AGP was validated, and 2 internal controls were analyzed on each plate with interplate variation of 15.0 and 17.3%, respectively. Bivariate analysis was used to assess the relationship between AGP and DMI. For significant associations, treatment(study) was added to the model, and quadratic associations were included in the model if significant. For many patients, the experience of receiving a diagnosis of HNC and subsequent treatment is disturbing and traumatic. Evidence suggests that HNC patients have a significantly increased risk of suicide compared with other cancer patients and the general population. Multiple social and medical factors may increase suicide risk in an individual, and include smoking and alcohol misuse. Given the elevated rate of suicide among HNC patients it is prudent to routinely assess patients for suicidal ideation to prevent unnecessary deaths by suicide. However, to the authors' knowledge, such assessments are not undertaken in most centres. This article describes the development of a suicide risk assessment protocol proposed for use in HNC patients in a major University Teaching Hospital in Leeds. The basic structure of this protocol could easily be adopted to other centres.
