Prior to 1933, the Zeitschrift für die gesamte Neurologie und Psychiatrie had been the major forum of discussing psychoanalysis in psychiatric circles. This discussion petered out in 1934 after the Journal had published the first scholarly paper, which connected the profile of Freud's teachings with their being rooted in the Viennese upper Jewish bourgeoisie. There was a parallel process in the journal Der Nervenarzt.Beetles of the genus Anthrenus are widespread worldwide and are quite common as grain and stock pests, especially in rural regions and suburban areas. The larvae of the beetles can trigger skin and occasionally mucosal reactions upon contact. The unfamiliar but typical image of "Anthrenus dermatitis" can easily be misinterpreted if beetle larvae are not detected or a causal link with them is not suspected. In the present article, the causes of Anthrenus dermatitis are discussed using as an example the larva of the woolly flower beetle (Anthrenus verbasci). For the examination of allergic causes, a *****-to-***** test with native larval material was performed in a patient and the specific IgE was determined by CAP coupling as well as in addition to a commercially available ImmunoCAP against larvae of a related beetle species. With the help of an immunoblot, an attempt was made to determine the responsible allergens in the native larval tissue. Important anatomical fine structures of the larva of a woolly herb flower beetle were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to understand functional processes that lead to the clinical picture of Anthrenus dermatitis. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/5-ethynyluridine.html Our allergological findings suggest an IgE-mediated, immediate-type allergy. The number of adolescents and children in elite and high-intensity mass sports is increasing, with respect to industrial nations. High-intensity training can cause overload due to the increased traction effect, particularly on tendon and muscle insertion sites. Apophyses are the center for ossification in tendon and muscle insertions and are therefore particularly vulnerable in youths to overload-related pathologies. Core measures in the prevention are a systematic planning of training and the avoidance of mechanical overstraining in the growth period. An exact imaging enables the diagnosis of apophyseal structural damage at an early stage, which in this phase can be healed by a pause in training and conservative measures.Interdisciplinary collaboration is one of the key factors for successful treatment of patients with complex injuries and diseases. Hence, several innovative concepts have been initiated to improve the treatment quality within the field of trauma surgery. The implementation of a ward pharmacist with the daily discussion of prescribed medications shows a reduction of side effects, costs for medicaments and the use of antibiotics. An interdisciplinary and multimodal delirium team was introduced and every patient over the age of 65 years was screened for the risk of perioperative and postoperative delirium, the medication was adjusted and expert advice was available in the case of acute delirium. Corresponding to the well-established tumor boards, an interdisciplinary musculoskeletal conference to decide on the treatment of complex interdisciplinary injuries of the musculoskeletal system should be established. The future challenges will include the digital connection of hospitals within the already existing trauma networks in order to provide rapid access to this interdisciplinary expertise also outside maximum care hospitals.Parapneumonic pleural effusion is a common complication of pneumonia and can progress to empyema. Pleural empyema is a life-threatening infection, which can be treated with antibiotics and interventional drainage but in later stages often requires surgery. Here we describe the first case of pleural empyema following a COVID-19 infection with no respiratory failure in a previously healthy and athletic patient. The patient was initially treated with antibiotics and interventional drainage but was readmitted to hospital with symptom deterioration. He was then referred for surgery and underwent an uneventful thoracoscopic washout with partial decortication. The preoperative SARS-CoV‑2 swab was negative. The patient recovered fully and could be discharged.Cyclophosphamide (CP) is a widely used anti-neoplastic drug; however, it leads to bladder dysfunction in the form of hemorrhagic cystitis that is a serious dose-limiting complication in cancer patients. We aimed to evaluate the protective effects of metformin (MET) in a mouse model of CP-related cystitis in parallel with its effect on CP-induced cytotoxicity in a breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231. Cystitis was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of CP (300 mg/kg), and **** were administered MET, mesna, or vehicle treatment. 24 hours after cystitis induction, the bladders were removed for histopathological analysis and ex vivo evaluation of detrusor muscle contractility. The effect of MET on the cytotoxicity of CP in MDA-MB-231 cells was evaluated as the viability of the cells via MTT assay. Histopathological evaluation confirmed that CP induced a severe cystitis, and MET partially inhibited CP-induced bladder damage. Carbachol-evoked cholinergic contractions were significantly decreased in detrusor strips of **** injected with CP only compared to control (Emax=293.67± 20.00 vs. 497.79± 21.78 mg tension/mg tissue, respectively). In CP-injected ****, treatment with 100 mg/kg MET restored cholinergic contractions (Emax=473.72±62.61 mg tension/mg tissue). In MDA-MB-231 cells, MET decreased their viability, and the combination of MET and CP caused more decrease in cell viability as compared to CP alone (p less then 0.05), demonstrating that MET enhances the cytotoxicity of CP in these cancer cells. Our results indicate that MET has a strong potential as a therapeutic adjuvant to prevent CP-induced cystitis while enhancing the efficacy of CP.Inhibition of complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain (cI) by rotenone and methyl-phenylpyridinium (MPP +) leads to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in man and rodents. To formally describe this mechanism of toxicity, an adverse outcome pathway (AOP3) has been developed that implies that any inhibitor of cI, or possibly of other parts of the respiratory chain, would have the potential to trigger parkinsonian motor deficits. We used here 21 pesticides, all of which are described in the literature as mitochondrial inhibitors, to study the general applicability of AOP3 or of in vitro assays that are assessing its activation. Five cI, three complex II (cII), and five complex III (cIII) inhibitors were characterized in detail in human dopaminergic neuronal cell cultures. The NeuriTox assay, examining neurite damage in LUHMES cells, was used as in vitro proxy of the adverse outcome (AO), i.e., of dopaminergic neurodegeneration. This test provided data on whether test compounds were unspecific cytotoxicants or specifically neurotoxic, and it yielded potency data with respect to neurite degeneration.
