A xanthene-based probe, Xanth-NPr, is developed as a molecular system that exhibits sensitivity for the highly acidic environments with fluorescence turn-on behavior. Xanth-NPr is designed on the principle of photoinduced electron transfer (PET), which controls the fluorescence profile of the probe. The structure of Xanth-NPr contains the dipropylaniline group as a PET promoting unit. Xanth-NPr exhibited quenched fluorescence as long as it is present in neutral or moderately acidic conditions. However, in the highly acidic pH range, it displayed a strong red-colored fluorescence at 592 nm as the protonation of dipropylaniline moiety inhibits the PET process. A model probe Xanth-M without any PET promoting unit was also synthesized. The model probe along with theoretical calculations was employed to explain the role of the PET process in regulating the fluorescence behavior of Xanth-NPr. Xanth-NPr showed linear fluorescence response as a function of pH in the range of 1 to 4.1 with the pKa value of 2.72. Likewise, its fluorescence profile is not altered by the presence of biologically relevant cations.At our institution, we aim to foster interest in oncology through the Student Oncology Society (SOS). The SOS was formed in 2010 and since then has hosted numerous oncology-related events, such as career panels, patient survivorship celebrations, and movie screenings. Out of the 26 respondents, 19 (73.1%) are pursuing an oncology-related specialty. The three most common competencies that were affected by participation in SOS, noted by 21 (80.8%) respondents, were learning about pathways to careers in oncology, understanding the multidisciplinary approach to cancer care, and coordinating events. By mean Likert score, the most important factors in career choice for respondents who eventually pursued an oncology field were having a mentor in oncology (4.44), a clinical rotation in oncology (4.31), research involvement (4.22), and SOS involvement (3.17). While SOS involvement played a role in career choice among our student leaders, having a mentor was cited to be the most important factor for choosing an oncology career. Thus, implementation of formal mentorship initiatives within the framework of oncology interest groups should be explored.The aim of this study was to assess university students' knowledge and understanding about HPV and its association with their vaccination status and health literacy. A sample of 383 undergraduate university students between the ages of 18 and 26 were recruited between February 14 and March 22, 2018. An electronic survey was administered to assess knowledge and HPV awareness, vaccination status, and health literacy. Participants had moderate mean knowledge scores of 6.02 of a possible 11 (SD = 3.06). There was a positive association between health literacy and HPV knowledge and a statistically significant difference in knowledge scores between those who are vaccinated and unvaccinated p less then 0.001. This study expanded available research on HPV vaccine and its uptake among university students and can be used to develop educational interventions. Continuous examination of HPV knowledge gaps and identifying factors that affect vaccine uptake is pivotal to increasing vaccination rates.The purpose of our study is to determine the protective effects of the newly discovered molecule DDQ (diethyl (3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamino)(quinolin-4-yl) methylphosphonate) against aging in an in vitro, mouse primary hippocampal neurons, HT22 cells, and in vivo, 24-month-old C57BL6/J ****. Using biochemical and molecular methods, we studied the half-life period in the blood and brain, optimized the dose, determined dose-response (using 1, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mg/kg body weight), and measured the levels of blood, skeletal muscle, and brain. Using Morris water maze (cognitive behavior), q-RT-PCR (mRNA and protein levels of longevity genes SIRTUINS), transmission electron microscopy (mitochondrial number and length), and Golgi-Cox staining (dendritic spine number and length) were assessed in 24-month-old C57BL6/J ****. Out of 5 different doses of DDQ, the 20 mg/kg body weight dose showed the strongest protective effects against aging in C57BL6/J ****. The half-life time of DDQ is 20 h in the serum and 12 h in the brain. Our extensive pharmacodynamics analysis revealed high peak levels of DDQ in the skeletal muscle, followed by serum and brain. Using mouse primary hippocampal (HT22) neurons and 24-month-old C57BL6/J ****, we tested the protective effects of DDQ. Interestingly, longevity genes SIRTUINS were upregulated in DDQ-treated HT22 cells, and DDQ-treated aged wild-type **** relative to DDQ-untreated cells and untreated aged control ****. Dendritic spines and the quality of mitochondria were significantly increased in DDQ-treated aged ****. Current study findings, together with our previous study observations, strongly suggest that DDQ has anti-aging effects and warrants further investigations of anti-inflammatory, anti-DNA damage, and telomerase activity studies.A significant decline in the admission to intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) has been noted in Italy during the COVID-19 outbreak. Previous studies have provided data on clinical features and outcome of these patients, but information is still incomplete. In this multicenter study conducted in six ICCUs, we enrolled consecutive adult patients admitted to ICCU in three specific time intervals from February 8 to March 9, 2020 [before national lockdown (pre-LD)], from March 10 to April 9, 2020 [during the first period of national lockdown (in-LD)] and from May 18 to June 17, 2020 [soon after the end of all containment measures (after-LD)]. Compared to pre-LD, in-LD was associated with a significant drop in the admission to ICCU for all causes (- 35%) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS; - 49%), with a rebound soon after-LD. The in-LD reduction was greater for women (- 49%) and NSTEMI (- 61%) compared to men (- 28%) and STEMI (- 33%). Length-of-stay, and in-hospital mortality did not show any significant change from to pre-LD to in-LD in the whole population as well as in the ACS group.
