Iron is an essential mineral that serves as a prosthetic group for a variety of proteins involved in vital cellular processes. The iron economy within humans is highly conserved in that there is no proper iron excretion pathway. Therefore, iron homeostasis is highly evolved to coordinate iron acquisition, storage, transport, and recycling efficiently. A disturbance in this state can result in excess iron burden in which an ensuing iron-mediated generation of reactive oxygen species imparts widespread oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and DNA. On the contrary, problems in iron deficiency either due to genetic or nutritional causes can lead to a number of iron deficiency disorders. Iron chelation strategies have been in the works since the early 1900s, and they still remain the most viable therapeutic approach to mitigate the toxic side effects of excess iron. Intense investigations on improving the efficacy of chelation strategies while being well tolerated and accepted by patients have been a particular focus for many researchers over the past 30 years. Moreover, recent advances in our understanding on the role of iron in the pathogenesis of different diseases (both in iron overload and iron deficiency conditions) motivate the need to develop new therapeutics. We summarized recent investigations into the role of iron in health and disease conditions, iron chelation, and iron delivery strategies. Information regarding small molecule as well as macromolecular approaches and how they are employed within different disease pathogenesis such as primary and secondary iron overload diseases, cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, infections, and in iron deficiency is provided.Objective To investigate the feasibility, clinical efficacy and safety of endobronchial ultasound (EBUS) in children. Methods The radiological features, EBUS images, pathological results and intraoperative and postoperative complications of 3 cases who underwent EBUS examination and 1 case who underwent EBUS guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) were retrospectively analyzed. Results Among the 4 cases, 2 were males and 2 were females, with the onset age of 7.4-9.2 years. The child who underwent successful EBUS-TBNA was presented with fever and diagnosed with mediastinal lymphadenopathy before the operation, and the postoperative pathology indicated histiocytic necrotic lymphadenitis (HNL). The other 3 children diagnosed with primary airway tumors, whose pre-operative CT imaging found no infiltration in extra-bronchial structures, had the masses resected through EBUS. According to postoperative pathological findings, two were diagnosed with mucoepidermoid carcinoma and one with bronchial leiomyoma. The lesions were located at the opening of the right main bronchus in 1 case and at the main airway in 2 cases. EBUS showed abnormal echogenicity of the tracheal wall in the 3 cases, including hyperechoic area in the water capsule and mucous layer, relatively hypoechoic area in the submucosal smooth muscle layer, hyperechoic area in the inner cartilage layer, hypoechoic in the cartilage layer and hyperechoic in the outer cartilage layer. Methods Data of 6 epilepsy patients with IRF2BPL gene variants seen from May 2017 to September 2020 in the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University First Hospital were retrospectively collected. The clinical characteristics and genetic test results were analyzed. Results A total of 6 patients with IRF2BPL gene variants (1 boy and 5 girls) were identified. The age of seizure onset was from 3.5 to 7.0 months. Epileptic spasms were observed in 6 patients, tonic seizures and tonic-spasms were observed in 1 patient and focal seizure was observed in 1 patient. All 6 patients presented with developmental delay, 5 patients presented with hypotonia, and 2 patients presented with dysphagia. Microcephaly,nystagmus,chorea and athetosis were observed in 1 patient. The electroencephalography (EEG) showed slow background activity in 2 patients. Hypsarrhythmia was obainly de novo. The age of seizure onset is mainly in infancy, and epilepsy and developmental delay are the main clinical manifestations. Infantile spasm is the main phenotype, some patients have hypotonia and dysphagia. Methods The clinical data, pathogen of BSI, antibiotic susceptibility in vitro, complications and prognosis of 204 newly diagnosed AML children admitted to Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from August 2009 to December 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. χ2 test was used for the comparison between groups and Logistic regression was used for BSI risk factor analysis. Results Among 204 patients, 116 were males and 88 were females. The age was 8 (ranged from 1 to 14) years. Among them, 170 patients received MAE chemotherapies (etoposide, mitoxantrone and cytarabine) and 25 received IAE chemotherapies (etoposide, idarubicin and cytarabine). The other 9 patients used granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-priming regimen (aclacinomycin or homoharringtonine, cytarabine and G-CSF) for induction treatments. A total of 28 patring the first induction chemotherapy courses, Gram-positive bacteria cause most of the BSI. Drug-resistant bacteria related infection often result in fatal outcomes. Severe neutropenia is a significant risk factor.
