We assessed the toxic effects of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) on cell viability, aromatase (Aro) activity and steroid production using ovarian and brain cell cultures obtained from Mullet, Liza klunzingeri. The brain and ovary were minced and digested, and the cells were suspended in Leibovitz's L-15 medium supplemented with 15% and 20% fetal bovine serum. The cell suspensions were seeded on 25-cm2 cell-culture flasks at 1 × 106 cells/mL and incubated at 25 °C for 2 weeks. A BaP concentration of 10-5 mol/L was accepted as the half-maximal inhibitory concentration. Ovarian and brain cells were exposed to different concentrations of BaP [0 (control), 10-6 , 2 × 10-6 , 3 × 10-6 mol/L] and incubated at 30 °C. At different sampling times (0, 12, 24 and 48 h) 40 ng/105 cells of 1,4,6-androstatriene-3,17-dione (ATD) was added to each well. Aro activity, 17β-estradiol (E2) and ATD production were determined. The sensitivity of the cultivated ovarian and brain cells to BaP increased dose dependently. BaP was a potent inhibitor of Aro activity at 2 × 10-6 and 3 × 10-6 mol/L, both in the cultivated brain and ovarian cells at different sampling times, with 10-6 mol/L BaP found to be the least potent Aro inhibitor. E2 production decreased from cultivated ovarian and brain cells treated by different concentrations of BaP. During extensive follicular atresia, which is a common reproductive dysfunction in females during vitellogenesis, part of the reabsorbed yolk returns to the liver to be metabolized and recycled. Melanomacrophage centres (****) are aggregates of macrophage-like cells that play a role in the destruction, detoxification and recycling of endogenous and exogenous materials, and have been associated with systemic stress. Wild and captive-reared greater amberjack were sampled in the Mediterranean Sea during two different phases of the reproductive cycle. The liver of reproductively dysfunctional captive-reared females sampled during the spawning season showed a high density of both **** and apoptotic cells. A weak liver anti-cytochrome P450 monooxygenase 1A immunoreactivity was observed, suggesting that the examined fish were not exposed to environmental pollutants. We propose that the observed increase in **** and apoptosis in captive-reared fish was related to the hepatic overload associated to the metabolism of yolk proteins reabsorbed during extensive follicular atresia. Since follicular atresia is a frequent physiological and pathological event in teleosts, we suggest that the reproductive state should be always assessed when **** are used as markers of exposure to stress or pollutants. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.Despite long-term efforts to encourage abandonment of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGMC), the practice remains widespread globally. FGMC is situated in specific social and historical contexts, and both prevalence and rates of decline vary widely across practicing countries. However, cross-national comparative research on the determinants of FGMC is sparse. This paper adds to the limited body of rigorous, theoretically grounded quantitative studies of FGMC and takes a step toward advancing cross-national comparative research. We apply an integrated theoretical framework that brings together norms-based and gender-based explanations of community-level influences on FGMC. We test this framework in four francophone West African countries, drawing on comparable nationally representative data from the Demographic and Health Surveys in Burkina Faso (2010), Côte d'Ivoire (2011-2012), Guinea (2012), and Mali (2012-2013). Results show that community-level FGMC norms and community-level gendered opportunities are associated with girls' risk of FGMC, but that the direct and moderating associations vary qualitatively across countries. Our findings highlight the contribution of context-specific social and institutional processes to the decline or persistence of FGMC. © 2020 The Population Council, Inc.BACKGROUND AND AIMS Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) using balloon assisted endoscope (BAE) such as double balloon endoscope (DBE) is even effective for patients with surgically altered anatomy. Yet comprehensive studies on complications of ERCP using BAE (BAE-ERCP) have not been made. We analyzed the characteristics and the causes of complications of ERCP using DBE (DB-ERCP) procedures and aimed to suggest effective managements. METHODS 1,576 procedures of DB-ERCP in 716 patients with surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy in our hospital were evaluated retrospectively using a statistic analysis. RESULTS The overall complication occurrence rate was 5.8%. By type of complications are; perforation 3.2%, mucosal laceration 0.5%, hemorrhage 1.0%, pancreatitis 0.6%, respiratory disorder 0.4%, and others 0.2%. By type of surgical reconstruction methods were; Roux-en-Y (R-Y) reconstruction with choledocho-jejunal anastomosis (CJA) 4.2%, R-Y without CJA 6.7%, pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) 4.
