An anonymous web-based questionnaire was distributed to various online HS support groups in May 2020.
A total of 283 participants met the inclusion criteria as adult women who self-reported having HS and menstrual cycles. The majority (176 of 282 women; 62.4%) reported HS worsening with menses, and 86.9% (153 of 176 women) noted that perimenstrual HS flares occurred always or often. Most women (138 of 175 women; 78.9%) reported that their HS flared in the week preceding menses. Perimenstrual HS flares were more likely in women with a family history of HS compared with those without (49.6% vs. 28.2%;
= .019). More than a third of respondents who had been treated with spironolactone reported improvement of HS symptoms, but more than a quarter of participants who used medroxyprogesterone acetate or used a hormonal intrauterine device reported worsened HS symptoms.
Female patients with HS have high rates of perimenstrual HS flares, specifically during the week preceding the onset of menses. Additional investigations on the role of sex hormones in HS pathogenesis and the efficacy of hormone-based therapies are warranted.

A total of 279 respondents answered questions on disease changes during pregnancy. Menstruation caused worsening of HS symptoms in 76.7%, no change in 22.2%, and improvement in 1.1%. During pregnancy, the distribution between symptoms worsening (34.8%), having no change (28.7%), and impl influence of HS on a patient's method of delivery. Multidisciplinary collaboration plays a pivotal role in developing individualized treatment and birth plans for pregnant women with HS.In 1982, oral isotretinoin was first licensed as a treatment option for severe recalcitrant cystic acne in the United States. Since its introduction into the pharmaceutical market, several instances of amenorrhea in women of child-bearing age taking isotretinoin have been reported. In each documented instance, amenorrhea spontaneously resolved once the medication was discontinued. The Patient Introductory Brochure for iPLEDGE, the risk management distribution program mandated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for isotretinoin, does not currently include menstrual irregularities as a side effect of treatment; thus, patients who experience this side effect may also experience the unnecessary stress of a possible pregnancy, or, if a minor, explaining a lack of menses to their parent/guardian. This review synthesizes the limited literature available on this subject to advocate for more widespread acknowledgment of menstrual irregularities as a side effect of isotretinoin therapy. To perform the literature review, the search was conducted on June 13, 2020 on PubMed using the following search terms (((isotretinoin) AND (oligomenorrhea))) OR ((isotretinoin) AND (amenorrhea)) OR ((isotretinoin) AND (PCOS)) OR ((isotretinoin) AND (menstrual irregularities)) OR ((isotretinoin) AND (polycystic ovary syndrome)). All years available were included. Articles were excluded if they were not published in English or did not address the topic of menstrual irregularities in the setting of isotretinoin, with or without the presence of polycystic ovary syndrome. A total of six articles met our criteria and are described.

When the equilibrium between microbial habitats and host is disturbed, dysbiosis is caused. The oral microbiome (OMB) has been implicated in the manifestation of many intra- and extraoral diseases. Lately, there has been an intense effort to investigate and specify the relationship between microbial complexes, especially that of the oral cavity and intestine and autoimmunity. This study aimed to review the current literature about the possible role of the OMB in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases.
We searched for published articles in English indexed in PubMed, Medline, Research Gate and Google Scholar using a search strategy that included terms for oral microbiome, autoimmune diseases, dysbiosis and next-generation sequencing.
