Objective Nuclear casein kinase and cyclin-dependent kinase substrate 1 (NUCKS1) is highly expressed in some tumors, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, its clinical significance in HCC prognosis is still unclear. The aim of this study was to explore the expression and prognostic value of NUCKS1 in HCC. Materials and Methods Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to detect relative expression of NUCKS1 mRNA in HCC tissues and corresponding adjacent normal tissues. The relationship between NUCKS1 expression and clinical characteristics of patients was analyzed by χ2 test. Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were applied to estimate prognostic value of NUCKS1 in HCC. Results Compared with normal ones, the expression of NUCKS1 mRNA was significantly upregulated in HCC tissues (p less then 0.001). Besides, NUCKS1 expression was closely associated with tumor differentiation, tumor node metastasis stage, vascular invasion, and metastasis (p less then 0.05). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that overall survival was obviously longer in HCC patients with low expression of NUCKS1 than those with high NUCKS1 expression (log rank test, p = 0.001). NUCKS1 might be an independent prognostic factor for HCC patients (HR = 1.905, 95% CI = 1.106-3.283, p = 0.020). Conclusions NUCKS1 may be correlated with the progression of HCC and serve as a potential predictive factor for the prognosis of this disease.Small satellite technologies, particularly CubeSats, are enabling breakthrough research in space. Over the past 15 years, NASA Ames Research Center has developed and flown half a dozen biological CubeSats in low Earth orbit (LEO) to conduct space biology and astrobiology research investigating the effects of the space environment on microbiological organisms. These studies of the impacts of radiation and reduced gravity on cellular processes include dose-dependent interactions with antimicrobial drugs, measurements of gene expression and signaling, and assessment of radiation damage. BioSentinel, the newest addition to this series, will be the first deep space biological CubeSat, its heliocentric orbit extending far beyond the radiation-shielded environment of low Earth orbit. BioSentinel's 4U biosensing payload, the first living biology space experiment ever conducted beyond the Earth-Moon system, will use a microbial bioassay to assess repair of radiation-induced DNA damage in eukaryotic cells over a duration of 6-12 months. Part of a special collection of articles focused on BioSentinel and its science mission, this article describes the design, development, and testing of the biosensing payload's microfluidics and optical systems, highlighting improvements relative to previous CubeSat life-support and bioanalytical measurement technologies.Antemortem domestic pig (Sus scrofa domesticus) dental pathology literature is sparse. This observational descriptive study evaluated 23 client-owned pigs that while sedated/anesthetized for routine annual care had intraoral dental radiographs and an oral examination performed. Age, gender, weight, and breed for each pig were recorded. Oral examination and radiographic findings were reviewed to create a comprehensive list of dental abnormalities identified. Descriptive statistics were performed to summarize the data. The study population included 14 castrated males and 20 Vietnamese pot-bellied mini-pigs. Supernumerary roots were discovered on the maxillary canine teeth in female pigs only (10/25 teeth with supernumerary roots). The most common persistent deciduous tooth was the maxillary second incisor (15/19 persistent deciduous teeth). Non-age or gender related open apices were most likely associated with mandibular first and second incisor teeth (26/96 teeth with open apices). Tooth resorption was also identified (7/23 pigs). The study findings prove that pet pigs commonly have dental pathology; therefore, thorough oral examinations with intraoral radiographs should be included in porcine routine health care regimens.Introduction Sexual minority (SM; lesbian, gay, bisexual) older adults age 50+ experience a higher prevalence of chronic disease and disability, as well as a poorer physical and mental health status, compared with their heterosexual peers. Many adults use complementary and integrative therapies, particularly mind-body therapies, as health-enhancing approaches and to support well-being. However, no study to date has examined the use of mind-body therapies among SM older adults. Materials and Methods Data were from the 2017 National Health Interview Survey. Descriptive and summary statistics were calculated to describe use of mind-body therapies by SM older adults (aged 50+). The authors also tested associations between use of mind-body therapies and health and well-being among SM older adults and compared associations with their non-SM counterparts. Results SM older adults reported higher usage (36%) of mind-body therapies compared with heterosexual adults (22%), with lesbian women reporting the highest use (39.4%). Having a SM identity was associated with mind-body therapy use; SM older adults were 57% more likely to use a mind-body therapy. Conclusion Mind-body therapies may be a useful tool for SM older adults to enhance their health and well-being. Future qualitative research is needed to investigate more deeply the reasons SM older adults use mind-body therapies. To advance the health and well-being of SM older adults, the authors also need intervention studies that explore the effectiveness of mind-body interventions and the possible need for tailoring these to the unique needs of this population.
Agricultural workers perform intense labor outside in direct sunlight and in humid environmental conditions exposing them to a high risk of heat-related illness (HRI). To implement effective cooling interventions in occupational settings, it is important to consider workers' perceptions. To date, an analysis of agricultural workers' experience and perception of cooling devices used in the field while working has not been published.
Qualitatively data from 61 agricultural workers provided details of their perceptions and experiences with cooling interventions.
The participants in the bandana group reported the bandana was practical to use at work and did not interfere with their work routine. Cooling vest group participants agreed that the vest was effective at cooling them, but the practicality of using the vest at work was met with mixed reviews.
The findings of this qualitative study support and extend existing research regarding personal cooling and heat prevention research interventions with vulnerable occupational groups.
