The double mutation also resulted in loss of cell viability, and caused embryo and endosperm cell death through vacuolar cell death and necrosis. Furthermore, the expression of genes involved in embryo patterning, endosperm cellularisation, DNA damage repair, cell cycle regulation, and DNA replication were significantly changed in the albino seeds of the double mutant. Moreover, we found that the SMC5/6 complex may participate in the SOG1 (SUPPRESSOR OF GAMMA RESPONSE1)-dependent DNA damage repair pathway. These findings suggest that both AtSMC6A and AtSMC6B are functionally redundant and play important roles in seed and gametophyte development through maintaining chromosome stability in Arabidopsis.
Technology has the potential to assist healthcare professionals in improving patient-doctor communication during the surgical journey. Our aims were to assess the acceptability of a quality of life (QoL) application (App) in a cohort of cancer patients undergoing lung resections and to depict the early perioperative trajectory of QoL.
This multicentre (Italy, UK, Spain, Canada and Switzerland) prospective longitudinal study with repeated measures used 12 lung surgery-related validated questions from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Item Bank. Patients filled out the questionnaire preoperatively and 1, 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after surgery using an App preinstalled in a tablet. A one-way repeated measures analysis of variance was run to determine if there were differences in QoL over time.
A total of 103 patients consented to participate in the study (83 who had lobectomies, 17 who had segmentectomies and 3 who had pneumonectomies). Eighty-three operations were performed by vietermined the evolution of surgery-related QoL in the immediate postoperative period. Monitoring these symptoms remotely may reduce hospital appointments and help to establish early patient-support programmes.

Abscisic acid (ABA) is a key plant hormone involved in the response to abiotic stress, especially drought. The pyrabactin resistance (PYR)/PYR1-like (PYL)/regulatory component of abscisic acid receptor (RCAR) family of proteins (simplified as PYLs) is a well-known ABA receptor family, which can be divided into dimeric and monomeric forms. PYLs can recognize ABA and activate downstream plant drought-resistance signals. However, the difference between monomeric and dimeric receptors in the mechanism of the response to ABA is unclear. Here, we reveal that monomeric receptors have a competitive advantage over dimeric receptors for binding to ABA, driven by the energy penalty resulting from dimer dissociation. ABA also plays different roles with the monomer and the dimer in the monomer, it acts as a 'conformational stabilizer' for stabilizing the closed gate, whereas for the dimer, it serves as an 'allosteric promoter' for promoting gate closure, which leads to dissociation of the two subunits. This work illustrates how receptor oligomerization could modulate hormonal responses and provides a new concept for novel engineered plants based on ABA binding of monomers.
Whether immunosuppressive therapy (IS) may be safely withdrawn in lupus nephritis (LN) is still unclear. We assessed rate and predictors of flare after IS withdrawal in patients with LN in remission.
Patients with biopsy-proven LN treated with IS between 1980 and 2020 were considered. Remission was defined as normal serum creatinine, proteinuria <0.5 g/24h, inactive urine sediment, and no extra-renal SLE activity on stable immunosuppressive and/or antimalarial therapy and/or prednisone ≤5mg/day. IS discontinuation was defined as the complete withdrawal of immunosuppressants, flares according to SLEDAI Flare Index. Predictors of flare were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Among 513 SLE patients included in our database, 270 had LN. Of them, 238 underwent renal biopsy and were treated with ISs. Eighty-three patients (34.8%) discontinued IS, 46 ± 30 months after remission achievement.
