We compared the hospital mortality of patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone, azithromycin alone, or their combination to the mortality of patients who received neither drug. A logistic multivariate model with overlap weight propensity score was used for estimation of odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). One thousand four hundred and three patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection were admitted to the hospital. While we await randomized clinical trials, these data support the use of azithromycin in novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and can contribute to better understanding of its role in further meta-analyses.Cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs), which are known as linear tetrapyrrole-binding photoreceptors, to date can only be detected from cyanobacteria. They can perceive light only in a small unit, which is categorized into various lineages in correlation with their spectral and structural characteristics. Recently, we have succeeded in identifying specific molecules, which can incorporate mammalian intrinsic biliverdin (BV), from the expanded red/green (XRG) CBCR lineage and in converting BV-rejective molecules into BV-acceptable ones with the elucidation of the structural basis. Among the BV-acceptable molecules, AM1_1870g3_BV4 shows a spectral red-shift in comparison with other molecules, while NpF2164g5_BV4 does not show photoconversion but stably shows a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence. In this study, we found that AM1_1870g3_BV4 had a specific Tyr residue near the d-ring of the chromophore, while others had a highly conserved Leu residue. The replacement of this Tyr residue with Leu in AM1_1870g3_BV4 resulted in a blue-shift of absorption peak. In contrast, reverse replacement in NpF2164g5_BV4 resulted in a red-shift of absorption and fluorescence peaks, which applies to fluorescence bio-imaging in mammalian cells. Notably, the same Tyr/Leu-dependent color-tuning is also observed for the CBCRs belonging to the other lineage, which indicates common molecular mechanisms.While religious slaughter is not a new practice in Australia, it has recently attracted public concern regarding questions of animal welfare following unfavourable media coverage. However, the details of religious slaughter practices, including related animal welfare provisions, appear to be poorly understood by the Australian public, and no existing literature concisely synthesises current regulations, practices, and issues. This paper addresses this gap by examining the processes associated with various types of religious slaughter and associated animal welfare issues, by reviewing the relevant legislation and examining public views, while highlighting areas for further research, particularly in Australia. The paper finds shortcomings in relation to transparency and understanding of current practices and regulation and suggests a need for more clear and consistent legislative provisions, as well as increased independence from industry in the setting of the standards, enforcement and administration of religious slaughter. A starting point for legal reform would be the relocation of important provisions pertaining to religious slaughter from delegated codes to the responsible act or regulation, ensuring proper parliamentary oversight. In addition, more active public engagement must occur, particularly with regard to what constitutes legal practices and animal welfare standards in the Australian context to overcome ongoing conflict between those who oppose religious slaughter and the Muslim and Jewish communities.It has been suggested that particle size plays an important role in determining the genotoxicity of gold nanoparticles (GNPs). The purpose of this study was to compare the potential radio-sensitization effects of two different sized GNPs (3.9 and 37.4 nm) fabricated and examined in vitro in Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) as a model of non-small cell lung cancer through use of comet and clonogenic assays. After treatment with 2Gy X-ray irradiation, both particle sizes demonstrated increased DNA damage when compared to treatment with particles only and radiation alone. This radio-sensitization was further translated into a reduction in cell survival demonstrated by clonogenicity. This work indicates that GNPs of both sizes induce DNA damage in LLC cells at the tested concentrations, whereas the 37.4 nm particle size treatment group demonstrated greater significance in vitro. The presented data aids in the evaluation of the radiobiological response of Lewis lung carcinoma cells treated with gold nanoparticles.
