To compare contact stresses between Attune® and PFC Sigma® total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implants in the presence of knee malalignment.

Maximum contact stress after finite element analysis were compared during standing, walking, and stair climbing in 0°, 2.5° and 5°varus/valgus knee alignments.

The percentage increase in contact stress was highest during walking with PFC Sigma® in 5° varus (238.5%), standing with Attune® in 5° valgus (127.2%), and standing with Attune® in 2.5° valgus (107.8%).

The newer Attune® design may be associated with higher maximum contact stresses and increased risk of wear and implant failure.

Roof arc angle (RAA) is determined by measuring angle between a vertical line drawn from center of the acetabulum towards the acetabular dome and a second line drawn from center of acetabulum to the fracture through the acetabulum. Joel and Matta demonstrated that when roof arc angle was less than 45° on Pelvic AP and Judet's views, the fracture line is considered to be passing through the weight-bearing dome and require surgical fixation. The main purpose of the study is to calculate patient-specific angle and width for the better evaluation and management of acetabular fractures.

Radiographs of normal hips were retrieved from electronic data and parameters were calculated. Two observers calculated the parameters at two different intervals. Pearson correlation formula was used to find a correlation between groups.

Fifty radiographs of 28 patients were reviewed. The mean age of patients was 75.58 years±13.28. The radius of the acetabulum, the radiographic measurement of sector width for 45° angulation at the roof, and the mathematical calculation for roof arc for 45° angle had significant positive correlation for both observers at two different occasions.

The measured roof arc width ranges from a minimum of 16.20mm-31.50mm and the calculated arc width for a 45-degree angle varies from a minimum of 15mm-25.56mm. These values are higher than the described values of 10mm equals to 45 degrees. Hence, the values measured in this study should be considered for decision making in the management of acetabular fractures.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of DBS with a commercial multiplex malaria assay, developed to concurrently measure Plasmodium antigens, histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2), Plasmodium lactate dehydrogenase (pLDH), and a host inflammatory biomarker, C-reactive protein (CRP), in whole blood. The assay conditions were optimized for DBS, and thermal stability for measurement of Plasmodium antigens and CRP in dried blood were determined. Performance of the multiplex assay on matched DBS and whole blood pellet samples was also evaluated using the clinical samples. The results indicate the acceptable performance in multiplex antigen detection using DBS samples. At cutoff levels for DBS, with a diagnostic specificity with a lower 95% confidence bound > 92%, diagnostic sensitivities against polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed malaria for HRP2, Pf LDH, Pv LDH, and Pan LDH were 93.5%, 80.4%, 21.3%, and 55.6%, respectively. The half-life of pLDH was significantly less than that of HRP2 in thermal stability studies. Results with DBS samples collected from Peru indicate that the uncontrolled storage conditions of DBS can result in inaccurate reporting for infection with P. falciparum parasites with hrp2/3 deletions. With careful consideration that minimizing the unfavorable DBS storage environment is essential for ensuring integrity of heat-labile Plasmodium antigens, DBS samples can be used as an alternative to liquid whole blood to detect P. falciparum with hrp2/3 deletions in malaria surveillance.

In this study, intratracheal instillation of sulfuric acid, a typical acidic compound, was performed to compare the acute toxicity of acidic compounds that could cause damage to the respiratory system between intratracheal instillation and inhalation. Sulfuric acid was administered to male rats at doses of 0.7, 2, 7, 20, and 60 mg/kg by dividing the total dose into four doses. General condition and body weight were examined up to 14 days after administration, and macropathological and histopathological examinations were performed. The half-lethal dose was then estimated. All animals administered 20 and 60 mg/kg sulfuric acid and one animal administered 2 mg/kg sulfuric acid died within 4 h after administration. No abnormalities were observed in other animals. At 20 and 60 mg/kg, multiple red foci or diffuse red areas were macroscopically observed in the lungs. In these lesions, histopathologically, clefts between the mucosal epithelium and basement membrane and necrosis of the alveolar epithelium were observed. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/arv-110.html Deaths in these groups may have resulted from lung injury.
