Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), distributed in Southeast Asia, are generally used in biomedical research. At present, the expansion of human communities overlapping of macaques' natural habitat causes human-macaque conflicts. To mitigate this problem in Thailand, the National Primate Research Center of Thailand, Chulalongkorn University (NPRCT-CU), was granted the permit to catch the surplus wild-born macaques and transfer them to the center. Based on the fact that the diets provided and the captive environments were different, their oral-gut microbiota should be altered. These results implicated the effects of captivity conditions on the microbiome that might contribute to crucial metabolic functions. Our study should be applied to the animal health care program, with respect to microbial functions, for non-human primates.The transition from hunting to herding transformed the cold, arid steppes of Mongolia and Eastern Eurasia into a key social and economic center of the ancient world, but a fragmentary archaeological record limits our understanding of the subsistence base for early pastoral societies in this key region. Organic material preserved in high mountain ice provides rare snapshots into the use of alpine and high altitude zones, which played a central role in the emergence of East Asian pastoralism. Here, we present the results of the first archaeological survey of melting ice margins in the Altai Mountains of western Mongolia, revealing a near-continuous record of more than 3500 years of human activity. Osteology, radiocarbon dating, and collagen fingerprinting analysis of wooden projectiles, animal bone, and other artifacts indicate that big-game hunting and exploitation of alpine ice played a significant role during the emergence of mobile pastoralism in the Altai, and remained a core element of pastoral adaptation into the modern era. Extensive ice melting and loss of wildlife in the study area over recent decades, driven by a warming climate, poaching, and poorly regulated hunting, presents an urgent threat to the future viability of herding lifeways and the archaeological record of hunting in montane zones.To assess good prognostic factors of Trabectome surgery in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), clinical records of patients with POAG who underwent Trabectome surgery with/without cataract surgery as the first additive therapy to eye drops between January 2015 and March 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Overall, data of 79 eyes (79 patients; 50 men; mean age, 68.0 years) up to postoperative 24 months were analyzed. Their mean intraocular pressure (IOP) was 20.4 ± 6.0 mmHg at baseline. Forty-two eyes (53.2%) achieved an IOP  less then  15 mmHg and ≥ 20% reduction from baseline without additional treatments. Phakic eyes had a better survival probability than pseudophakic eyes after adjusting for age, sex, baseline IOP, best-corrected visual acuity, and eye drop score (hazard ratio 3.096; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.367-7.013; P = 0.007). Phakic eyes treated with combined Trabectome and cataract surgeries (mean survival time, 22.250 months; 95% CI 17.606-26.894) had a better survival probability than pseudophakic eyes treated with Trabectome surgery only (mean survival time, 12.111 months; 95% CI 8.716-15.506; P = 0.009) after the adjustment. Among the eyes treated with Trabectome surgery only, phakic eyes required significantly less additional treatments than pseudophakic eyes (P = 0.04). Trabectome surgery may be indicated for phakic eyes with POAG in addition to eye-drop therapy.Process engineering of biotechnological productions can benefit greatly from comprehensive analysis of microbial physiology and metabolism. Ralstonia eutropha (syn. Cupriavidus necator) is one of the best studied organisms for the synthesis of biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). A comprehensive metabolomic study during bioreactor cultivations with the wild-type (H16) and an engineered (Re2058/pCB113) R. eutropha strain for short- and or medium-chain-length PHA synthesis has been carried out. PHA production from plant oil was triggered through nitrogen limitation. Sample quenching allowed to conserve the metabolic states of the cells for subsequent untargeted metabolomic analysis, which consisted of GC-MS and LC-MS analysis. Multivariate data analysis resulted in identification of significant changes in concentrations of oxidative stress-related metabolites and a subsequent accumulation of antioxidative compounds. Moreover, metabolites involved in the de novo synthesis of GDP-L-fucose as well as the fucose salvage pathway were identified. The related formation of fucose-containing exopolysaccharides potentially supports the emulsion-based growth of R. eutropha on plant oils.Topological edge states are predicted to be responsible for the high efficient thermoelectric response of topological insulators, currently the best thermoelectric materials. However, to explain their figure of merit the coexistence of topological electrons, entropy and phonons can not be considered independently. In a background that puts together electrodynamics and topology, through an expression for the topological intrinsic field, we treat relativistic phonons within the topological surface showing their ability to modulate the Berry curvature of the bands and then playing a fundamental role in the thermoelectric effect. Finally, we show how the topological insulators under such relativistic thermal excitations keep time reversal symmetry allowing the observation of high figures of merit at high temperatures. The emergence of this new intrinsic topological field and other constraints are suitable to have experimental consequences opening new possibilities of improving the efficiency of this topological effect for their based technology.
