Using a sample from a population to estimate the proportion of the population with a certain category label is a broadly important problem. In the context of microbiome studies, this problem arises when researchers wish to use a sample from a population of microbes to estimate the population proportion of a particular taxon, known as the taxon's relative abundance. In this paper, we propose a beta-binomial model for this task. Like existing models, our model allows for a taxon's relative abundance to be associated with covariates of interest. However, unlike existing models, our proposal also allows for the overdispersion in the taxon's counts to be associated with covariates of interest. We exploit this model in order to propose tests not only for differential relative abundance, but also for differential variability. The latter is particularly valuable in light of speculation that dysbiosis, the perturbation from a normal microbiome that can occur in certain disease conditions, may manifest as a loss of stability, or increase in variability, of the counts associated with each taxon. We demonstrate the performance of our proposed model using a simulation study and an application to soil microbial data.This paper describes a microwave resonator incorporating microfluidic lab-on-chip sensor system capable of performing simultaneous differential measurement based sensing of liquid samples. The resonators are split-ring resonator shapes made of gold on glass substrates. Directly bonded on glass substrates are polydimethylsiloxane microchannels. Sensor system design incorporates a pair of identical resonators, one of which performs reference reading from the background. Tracking the difference of the responses of both resonators simultaneously, rather than a single one, is used to obtain a more linear and noise-free reading. The sensor system was produced with conventional fabrication techniques. It is compatible with low-cost, simple, easy to handle sensing applications. Results indicate that reliable differential measurement was possible owing to a well-matched pair of sensors with a response error as low as 0.1%. It was also demonstrated that differential measurement capability enables sensing with improved linearity. Measurements were performed with glucose solutions in the range of 3.2-16.1 mM, achieving a sensitivity of 0.16 MHz/mM.Most of reported symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection are related to the respiratory system. Extra pulmonary manifestations of this novel virus infection are being increasingly reported in the literature, with increased attention on the gastrointestinal symptoms which might be the only presenting symptoms in some patients. We present a case of SARS-CoV-2 infection of a 40-year-old lady who presented with GI manifestations and features of colitis of the caecum and ascending colon on CT scan. These features were completely resolved as evident clinically and on follow-up CT scan after only 2 weeks, with only supportive care for SARS-CoV-2 infection. GI symptoms, in general, are very common presenting complain for many patients visiting the emergency department; hence, early recognition and high index of clinical suspicion for SARS-CoV-2 infection with the presence of supporting laboratory and imaging findings are to be considered for early protective measures to be undertaken to help in reducing the spread of this virus; in particular, in the middle of global pandemic of this virus and the fact that GI symptoms could be the only presenting symptoms without any respiratory symptoms. More studies and further invasive investigations in patients with features of colitis in imaging are needed to further understand the pathogenesis and its relation to SARS-CoV-2 infection.COVID-19 pneumonia has demonstrated a wide spectrum of clinical presentations that has yet to be completely uncovered. We discuss the case of a 49-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Initial chest X-ray suggested viral pneumonia that was confirmed to be due to COVID-19. He was treated with empiric antibiotics, antiviral therapy, high-dose glucocorticoids, and interleukin antagonists. Two weeks into the patient's hospital course, he rapidly decompensated with subsequent chest X-ray and CT chest confirming tension pneumothorax with bronchopleural fistula. Intraoperative samples of the necrotic empyema identified mucormycosis invading the lung parenchyma with follow-up microbiology results confirming Rhizopus species. In this case report, we explore the possibility that the patient's immunocompromised state may have contributed to the patient's development of mucormycosis and subsequent development of bronchopleural fistula.We report a case of a uterine artery pseudoaneurysm in a 29-year-old primigravid woman at 16 weeks gestation. The woman presented to the emergency room with lower left quadrant pain and vaginal bleeding. Ultrasound revealed a left adnexal mass consistent with a pseudoaneurysm. Percutaneous thrombin injection was chosen to avoid contrast and radiation risks to the fetus. Ultrasound demonstrated thrombosis of the pseudoaneurysm with no evidence of fetal distress. On postprocedure day 2, the patient presented again with similar complaints of lower quadrant pain and vaginal bleeding. The pseudoaneurysm was found to have recanalized and a decision was made to treat with computed tomography angiography and coil embolization. The procedure was successful, with angiography revealing an incidental branch of the pseudoaneurysm that was subsequently embolized.Fat emboli are a common phenomenon, but are rarely detected or reported on extremity CT imaging. We present a case of fat embolus in the popliteal vein in the setting of a femoral fracture. This is the most distal fat embolus described in the literature. There are no guidelines regarding intervention if a fat embolus is detected in a peripheral vein on CT. A review of all the previous cases of peripheral fat emboli is presented for reference.
