While in the past, programming skills were **** more related to fields of computer sciences and engineering, today, professionals from different areas benefit from the ability to write codes for different applications. Furthermore, programming stimulates logical thinking, which impacts other personal abilities. Health science students have limited exposure to programming during their studies. Aware of this and considering the prolonged time in social distancing in Brazil due to the SARS-COV2 pandemic in 2020, we organized an outreach course dedicated to teaching introductory concepts of programming for health science students. The activity was developed fully online using the Zoom web conference agent, lasting 12 wk (8 synchronous classes, 15 synchronous hours in total), and attended by 27 undergraduate and graduate students from two different universities. A collaborative problem-based learning and group-learning methodology were developed through asynchronous homework and mainly online synchronous activities. In this article, we describe our approach and provide some suggestions for replicating the course in other universities. We observed that the activities of the outreach course improved programming skills and confidence for most of the students. More importantly, it piqued their interest enough to motivate them to continue to practice writing and testing their programs. We concluded that an outreach course dedicated to programming promoted improvements in programming skills in health science students. Furthermore, the program was an opportunity to keep the students active in science while working from their homes during the pandemic.There has been an increased reliance on prerecorded lectures as a source of learning in place of live lectures in higher education. However, we must appreciate that our students send countless intended and unintended messages during class that relate to their cognitive and emotional states. Shaping productive learning experiences requires understanding their cognitive and emotional states by interpreting their statements, actions, and body language in real time. This can only occur with face-to-face instruction and makes it possible to tailor the class to the students' needs. Becoming aware of the students' cognitive and emotional state by listening and learning their body language is fundamental to teaching, as it will alert educators to cognitive effort and attention, surprise, or uncertainty, as well as a range of emotions, including confusion. Without an understanding of the students cognitive and emotional states, we lose our ability to structure conversations or to reinforce difficult concepts and important ideas in real time. We also lose our ability to adjust on the fly and modify instruction on the basis of the needs of our students. Thus, learning the cognitive and emotional states of our students during class is an essential skill of teaching and the critical means that a teacher uses to promote understanding and positive attitudes about education.Active learning activities offer opportunities for medical students to facilitate the retention of knowledge and develop soft skills. We aimed to create a guide for an interdisciplinary **** trial learning activity within the medical curriculum of the College of Medicine, Anhembi Morumbi University-Laureate International Universities, Sao Paulo, Brazil. We designed an "Animal Experimentation **** Trial" in which students are coached to search for scientific, legal, and ethical arguments pro and contra animal experimentation in medical research. The **** trial is prepared and staged with student teams to play the 1) presiding judge, 2) the plaintiff's attorney and expert witnesses contra animal research, 3) the defense attorney and expert witnesses pro animal research, and 4) the jury. The plaintiff and defense teams made presentations, and between each presentation the jury put questions to presenters (cross-examination). The jury team gave two evaluation scores after the plaintiff's presentation and then after the defense presentation. The formal feedback for this active learning activity indicated that students expressed satisfaction with the teaching strategies employed in the course. The **** trial with the lesson plan provides a learning mean to exemplify the complex relationship between animal experimentation, medical evidence, ethics, and law/regulations. This **** trial helps medical students to develop their soft skills, such as the ability to collaborate and also to recognize the limits of their own knowledge, important for professional development. The importance of interdisciplinary discussions is demonstrated by increasing the awareness of the multidisciplinary aspect of animal research.
