As governments consider policy action to reduce smoking, a key factor in creating political will is the level of public support, particularly among smokers who are most affected by the policies. The goal of this paper is to assess and compare the level of support in Canada, the United States, England, and Australia for five smoking control policies 1) banning menthol in cigarettes, 2) banning cigarette additives, 3) reducing nicotine in cigarettes to make them less addictive, 4) raising the minimum age to purchase cigarettes to 21 years and older, and 5) requiring pictorial warning labels on cigarette packs (examined in the US only). Data for these analyses come from 8165 daily cigarette smokers who responded to the 2016 International Tobacco Control Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey. In all countries, the highest level of support was for raising the legal age for purchase to 21 years and older (62-70%) and reducing the nicotine content of cigarettes to make them less addictive (57-70%). Smokers who were less dependent on cigarettes and those expressing interest in quitting were more likely to support all policies. When asked how they would respond to a nicotine reduction policy, the most common response given was to try the non-nicotine cigarettes to see how they liked them (42-48%), with the next most common response being to quit smoking entirely (16-24%). The high level of support for these proposed policies among daily smokers provides important evidence for policymakers to counteract claims that such policies would be unpopular.The semi-fossil and pit-less Azemiops feae is possibly the most primitive crotalid species. Here, we have cloned and sequenced cDNAs encoding four serine proteases (vSPs) from the venom glands of Chinese A. feae. Full amino-acid sequences of the major vSP (designated as AzKNa) and three minor vSPs (designated as AzKNb, AzKNc and Az-PA) were deduced. Using Protein-BLAST search, the ten most-similar vSPs for each Azemiops vSP have been selected for multiple sequence alignment, and all the homologs are crotalid vSPs. The results suggest that the A. feae vSPs are structurally most like those of eastern-Chinese Gloydius, Viridovipera, Protobothrops and North American pitvipers, and quite different from more-specialized vSPs such as Agkistrodon venom Protein-C activators. The vSPs from Chinese A. feae and those from Vietnamese A. feae show significant sequence variations. AzKNa is acidic and contains six potential N-glycosylation sites and its surface-charge distribution differs greatly from that of AzKNb, as revealed by 3D-modeling. AzKNb and AzKNc do not contain N-glycosylation sites although most of their close homologs contain one or two. Az-PA belongs to the plasminogen-activator subtype with a conserved N20-glycosylation site. The evolution of this subtype of vSPs in Azemiops and related pitvipers has been traced by phylogenetic analysis.Ceylon krait (Bungarus ceylonicus) of the family Elapidae is a highly venomous endemic species inhabiting in the wet zone and some parts of the intermediate climatic zones of Sri Lanka. Clinical records of its bites are rare and limited to five case reports in the literature. It is of interest to note that there are several non-venomous snakes in Sri Lanka having similar morphological appearance to kraits causing identification difficulties which lead to unnecessary and unindicated administration of antivenom. We report two paediatric cases of proven Ceylon krait bites and three adult patients with similar looking non-venomous snakebites. These children were 1½ and 13 years old and developed neuroparalysis without progressing to respiratory failure and recovered. Both the children were administered Indian polyvalent antivenom which has not developed against endemic Ceylon krait venom. The two adult patients also received antivenom due to the misidentification without clinical and laboratory evidence of envenoming.Although rats are known to emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), it remains unclear whether these calls serve an auditory communication purpose. For USVs to be part of communication, the vocal signals will need to be a transfer of information between two or more conspecifics, and with the possibility to induce changes in the behavior of the recipient. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/****4381.html Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the role of USVs in adult rats' social and non-social investigation strategies when introduced into a large novel environment with unfamiliar conspecifics. We quantified a wide range of social and non-social behaviors in the seminatural environment, which could be affected by subtle signals, including USVs. We found that during the first hour in the seminatural environment the ability to vocalize did not affect how quickly adult rats met each other, their overall social investigation behavior, their passive social behavior nor their aggressive behavior. Furthermore, the non-social exploratory behaviors and behaviors reflecting anxiety/stress-like states were also unaffected. These results demonstrated that a disability to vocalize did not result in significant disadvantages (or changes) compared to intact conspecifics regarding social and non-social behaviors. This suggests that other (multi)sensory cues are more relevant in social interactions than USVs.The role of medial septum in the genesis of slow-wave sleep and the inhibition of rapid eye movement sleep has been established using neurotoxic lesion and chemical stimulation of the medial septum. Intracerebroventricular injection of endocannabinoids (anandamide) decreases wake and increases slow-wave and rapid eye movement sleep in rats. Central cannabinoid (CB1) receptors are localized in the rat medial septum; however, the role of cannabinoid receptors at the medial septum on the regulation of sleep-wakefulness in rats lacks evidence. In this study, we have examined the changes in sleep architecture of 21 male Wistar rats, divided into three groups. Initially, 6 rats were used for dose standardization. Subsequently, one group (n = 6) was microinjected with CB1 receptor agonist, R-(+)-WIN 55,212-2 mesylate salt, the second group (n = 6) received microinjection of CB1 receptor antagonist LY 320,135, and the third group (n = 5) was microinjected with the vehicle, DMSO at the medial septum using stereotaxy. The sleep-wake cycle was recorded using electroencephalogram, electro-oculogram, and electromyogram.
