Background and aims In China, regional organized esophageal cancer screening programs have been implemented since 2005. However, the implementation of these screening programs is still facing some urgent challenges, especially concerning identifying high-risk individuals. This study aimed to evaluate the risk stratification potential of the current initial assessment strategy used in a mass esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) screening program in China. Materials A total of 43,875 participants without prior cancer history enrolled in a mass ESCC screening program in China from 2007 to 2010 who had initial assessment results were included in this study and were followed until December 31, 2015. Eight potential risk factors for ESCC were evaluated in the initial assessment strategy. A comprehensive evaluation of the association of the initial assessment results with ESCC risk was performed by propensity score matching and Cox regression analysis. Our aim was to demonstrate feasibility of a deep-learning *** system for tissue characterization of NBI-zoom imagery in BE. Methods The *** system was first trained using 494,364 endoscopic images of general endoscopic imagery. Next, 690 neoplastic BE and 557 nondysplastic (ND)BE white-light endoscopy overview images were used for refinement training. Subsequently, a third dataset of 112 neoplastic and 71 NDBE NBI-zoom images with histological correlation was used for training and internal validation. Finally, the *** system was further trained and validated with a fourth, histologically confirmed, dataset of 59 neoplastic and 98 NDBE NBI-zoom videos. Performance was evaluated using fourfold cross-validation. Primary outcome was the diagnostic performance of the *** system for classification of neoplasia in NBI-zoom videos. Results The *** system demonstrated an accuracy, sensitivity and specificity for detection of BE neoplasia using NBI-zoom images of 84%, 88%, and 78%, respectively. In total 30,021 individual video frames were analyzed by the *** system. Accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the video-based *** system were 83% (95% CI, 78%-89%), 85% (95% CI, 76%-94%) and 83% (95% CI, 76%-90%), respectively. Mean assessment speed was 38 frames per second. Conclusion We have demonstrated promising diagnostic accuracy of predicting the presence/absence of Barrett's neoplasia on histologically confirmed unaltered NBI-zoom videos with fast corresponding assessment time.In recent years, photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has found many applications in various medical fields. Studies of PBMT on spinal cord injury (SCI) have mostly used laser sources in experimental animal models. The purpose of this study was to summarize studies that have employed PBMT for various kinds of SCI in animals. A thorough search in databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and Web of Science, with the removal of unrelated articles, yielded 16 relevant articles. The meta-analysis showed that PBMT was effective in improving post-SCI movement in the first 14 days (MD = 1.593 (95% CI 1.110 to 2.075; p 800nm) and injury severity (moderate or severe) were found to be factors that can affect PBM efficacy for SCI treatment. PBMT has an anti-inflammatory effect, is effective in reducing the size of spinal cord lesions and helps to absorb administrated proteins and stem cells to the lesion site.The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a 48-h fast on evoked stress, mood, and cognitive and motor functions in overweight and obese older women. Eleven women (body mass index >25 kg/m2) aged 63-80 years were tested under two randomly allocated conditions 48-h zero-calorie diet with water provided ad libitum and 48-h usual diet. Autonomic function, cortisol levels, mood state, cognitive performance, visuomotor coordination, motor speed, and balance were evaluated before and after each diet. Fasting increased (P less then 0.05) cortisol levels, whereas no changes were observed in heart rate and its variability. Fasting increased (P less then 0.05) fatigue, prolonged (P less then 0.05) reaction time in the two-choice reaction time test and decreased (P less then 0.05) the velocity vector of the center of pressure with eyes closed, whereas no changes in performance were observed in the pursuit tracking and finger tapping tests. Thus, although a 48-h fast resulted in greater hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity in overweight and obese older women, autonomic nervous system activity was not affected. Fasting increased fatigue and decreased mental flexibility, but improved balance.Dietary intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) or saturated fatty acids (SFAs) differently modulates neurophysiological and behavioral functions in response to altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis activity and an individual's development. In this context, an individual's social environment, including social interactions and social hierarchies, is closely related to hormone concentrations and possibly interacts with dietary fatty acid effects. We investigated if dietary supplementation with walnut oil (high in PUFAs) and coconut fat (high in SFAs), compared to a control group, affects body mass gain, cortisol and testosterone concentrations, plasma fatty acids, and social behavior in male domestic guinea pigs from adolescence to adulthood. For analyses of cortisol and testosterone concentrations, social interactions were included as covariates in order to consider effects of social behavior on hormone concentrations. Our results revealed that SFAs increased escalated conflicts like fights and stimulated cortisol and testosterone concentrations, which limited body mass gain and first-year survival.
