To explore the social representation of abuse of persons with mental illness among the inhabitants of Jakiri municipality in Cameroon.
This was a qualitative study based on the Theory of Reasoned Action, conducted in 2018 among 11 inhabitants of Jakiri municipality, aged above 18 years and who had lived in the town for at least 2 years. In-depth face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed using the basic thematic approach.
The belief that mental illness is incurable, a curse from the gods, a result of witchcraft, and a punishment for violation of core social norms were identified as the reasons for physical violence against persons with mental illness. Beliefs that persons with mental illness were disorganized, destructive, physically aggressive, and dependent on others were identified as reasons for emotional abuse.

To review the prenatal characteristics and postnatal outcomes of Early-onset and Late-onset cerebral ventriculomegaly (VM).
Single-center retrospective study 2013-2017; VM cases grouped into Early-onset VM (EVM; Diagnosis at/before 24 weeks) and Late-onset VM (LVM; Beyond 24 weeks). LVM cases had normal ventricle width measurement at mid-trimester scan. Infection serology, cytogenetics, MRI, sonographic follow-up, perinatal and neurodevelopmental outcomes were analyzed.
During the 5-year period, 64,662 women underwent an anomaly screening scan and 302 fetuses were identified with ventriculomegaly; 183 (60.6%) classified as early-onset and 119 (39.4%) LVM. The mean ventricular width was significantly higher in LVM cohort (14.1 mm vs 11.6 mm;
< .01). EVM cases were more often associated with structural anomalies (
< .05). Possible etiologies for EVM were aneuploidy and cerebral malformations like Absent Corpus Callosum, spina bifida, Dandy-Walker malformation, etc., whereas LVM followed aqueducrmations. LVM often occurs secondary to acquired brain lesions.This study demonstrates the applications of Bacillus coagulans in alcohol elimination. Bacillus coagulans has recently drawn tremendous interest in the food industry and medicine considering its great environmental tolerance and beneficial effects on improving gastrointestinal diseases. However, few scientific reports connect its utilities with alcohol elimination. In this study, we introduced the unique strain B. coagulans TCI711 for such exploration. TCI711 contained alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) by mass spectrum and resisted gastric acid and bile acid. Also, taking TCI711 capsules for a week can significantly improve alcohol metabolism in humans (breath alcohol level indicated 0 mg/kg in 2 h after drinking 75 mL of whisky). In brief, this exploratory research unveiled the potent applications of B. coagulans in alcohol elimination in humans.Exposure to crude acetylene can occur in occupational settings. This study assessed the modulatory activities of selected polyphenols on the hematotoxic, cardiotoxic, and hepatotoxic effects of crude acetylene. Wistar rats were exposed to 58 000 ppm crude acetylene for 10 min at 12 h intervals for 30 days. Some exposed groups were treated with 50 mg/kg rutin, quercetin, gallic acid, or tannic acid. Indices of hematological disorder, oxidative stress, and cardiovascular and hepatocellular injuries were evaluated in animals. The results showed a decrease in the levels of hematological indices in crude acetylene-exposed animals except for white blood cell count which was increased. Decreased activity/level of reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and ferric reducing antioxidant power with increased lipid peroxidation was observed in animals exposed to crude acetylene. Activities of transaminases, γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, and level of bilirubin were increased while the plasma albumin level was decreased. Dyslipidemia, increased activities of lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase-MB, and severe histopathological damage to hepatic and cardiac tissues were also observed in animals exposed to the gas. These deleterious hematological, biochemical, and histopathological changes were ameliorated in crude acetylene-toxified rats treated with the polyphenols. Tannic acid exhibited better activity than gallic acid while quercetin showed a superior activity to rutin. The results indicate that exposure to crude acetylene can lead to blood, heart, and liver-related diseases and dietary polyphenols could provide protective benefits.Introduction Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKinibs) constitute an emerging and promising pharmacological class of anti-inflammatory or anti-cancer drugs, used notably for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and some myeloproliferative neoplasms.Areas covered This review provides an overview of the interactions between marketed JAKinibs and major uptake and efflux drug transporters. Consequences regarding pharmacokinetics, drug-drug interactions and toxicity are summarized.Expert opinion JAKinibs interact in vitro with transporters in various ways, as inhibitors or as substrates of transporters or as regulators of transporter expression. This may theoretically result in drug-drug interactions (DDIs), with JAKinibs acting as perpetrators or as victims, or in toxicity, via impairment of thiamine transport. Clinical significance in terms of DDIs for JAKinib-transporter interactions remains however poorly documented. In this context, the in vivo unbound concentration of JAKinibs is likely a key parameter to consider for evaluating the clinical relevance of JAKinibs-mediated transporter inhibition. Additionally, the interplay with drug metabolism as well as possible interactions with transporters of emerging importance and time-dependent inhibition have to be taken into account. The role drug transporters may play in controlling cellular JAKinib concentrations and efficacy in target cells is also an issue of interest.
