OBJECTIVE Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) and large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) are related to different pathogenetic mechanisms. However, relationships between single biomarkers of cSVD and LAA affecting isolated vascular beds have been reported. Using the Atahualpa Project cohort, we aimed to assess the association between cSVD score categories and LAA burden in community-dwelling older adults. PATIENTS AND METHODS Atahualpa individuals aged ≥60 years undergoing assessment of the cSVD score and LAA in the peripheral, carotid extracranial, and intracranial vascular beds (n = 333) were included. Multivariate models were fitted to assess independent associations between the cSVD score and LAA burden. RESULTS The cSVD score was 0 points in 62 % individuals, 1 point in 19 %, 2 points in 13 %, and 3-4 points in 7 %. LAA involved the extracranial carotid bed in 43 % individuals, the intracranial bed in 36 %, and the peripheral bed in 20 %. One vascular bed was involved in 111 (33 %) individuals, two beds in 75 (23 %), and three beds in 23 (7 %). The remaining 124 (37 %) had no atherosclerosis. Ordinal logistic regression models showed progressively greater associations between higher categories of cSVD score and the odds of having more beds involved with LAA. Multinomial logistic regression models showed associations between categories of cSVD score and LAA burden, but only when two or three vascular beds were involved. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates robust associations between the cSVD score and LAA, which become evident at the upper end of the spectrum of cSVD score (3-4 points) and LAA burden (2-3 vascular beds involved). OBJECTIVE To assess the association between asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) and short cervical length (CL), since they are both associated with preterm delivery. STUDY DESIGN In two prospective multicentre cohort studies, pregnant women were screened for the presence of ASB and short CL (≤25 mm). We compared CL in women with and without ASB. Both studies had a small randomised clinical trial embedded. RESULTS Our study population comprised 1 610 women, of whom 114 were ASB positive. Median cervical length was similar in women with and without ASB (44.0 vs 44.0 mm, P = 0.60). More women in the ASB positive group had a short CL compared to the ASB negative group (1.8 % versus 0.4 %, P = 0.047)). The gestational age at delivery did not differ between the groups (ranging from 38 + 3 in women with ASB and short CL to 39 + 5 in women without ASB with a short CL P = 0.52). No preterm births occurred in women with a short cervical length (regardless of ASB status). In the women without ASB and no short CL 4.8 % had a preterm birth, in the women with ASB but not a short CL 4.1 % had a preterm birth. CONCLUSION While ASB status did not influence median cervical length, we found a significant relationship between a short CL and ASB positive women. We found no statistical significant difference on the preterm birth rate and mean gestational age. Improper land-use changes may lead to a loss of soil resources and cause environmental pollution. Chinese Torreya plantation (hereafter CTP) is an important cash tree plantation for nuts production in the mountainous areas of subtropical China. The increasing development of CTPs, to increase seed production, can result in the complete erasure of local natural vegetation. In this study, the vulnerability to soil erosion, loss of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nutrients in CTPs due to land-use change were evaluated. The results indicated that the rates of diffusive soil erosion in the young CTPs with extreme precipitation were about six-fold higher than with the natural vegetation. At sites with a similar slope, there was no significant difference in soil erosion levels between the young and old CTPs. The old CTPs did not hold significantly higher levels of SOC and soil total nitrogen (STN) in their topsoil when compared with the young CTPs. The natural mixed broadleaved subtropical forests lost about 35% of their SOC and 25% of their STN after they were converted into CTPs, but the CTPs had higher soil total phosphorus. The C N ratios at the different sites were close to 111, but the N P ratios were diverse. There were high levels of organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in stream water. Adequate coverage of natural vegetation within or around the CTPs should be maintained to decrease soil erosion and nutrient loss. Suggestions to develop CTPs while protecting the environment are discussed. Overall, it was determined that aspects of the current management practices and strategies for developing CTPs should be changed to decrease soil erosion and nutrient loss. The optimal extraction conditions were 250 μL of undecanol, 1.0 mL of THF and 20.0% (w/v, 4 g) NaCl. Under the optimum conditions, method limit of detection and method limit of quantitation in the ranges of 0.01-0.08 μg/L and 0.03-0.25 μg/L, good recoveries (72.5-117.8%) and intra-day precision (1.1-11.2%, n = 6), high enrichment factors (48-78) were obtained. The developed method was successfully applied for analysis of PFCs in 13 drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent samples collected from southern China. Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water with concentration of 0.48 μg/L and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water and two plant effluent samples with concentrations in the range of 0.14-0.67 μg/L.
