The objective of this study was to determine whether two commonly prescribed antiseizure medications (ASMs), levetiracetam (LEV) and oxcarbazepine (OXC), were associated with an increased risk of fragility fracture in children with epilepsy when initiating therapy during a crucial period of bone development, namely, pre- and midpuberty.
Claims data from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018 were extracted from the Optum Clinformatics Data Mart. Children aged 4-13years at baseline with at least 5 years of continuous health plan enrollment were included to allow for a 1-year baseline (e.g., pre-ASM exposure) and 4 years of follow-up. Children with epilepsy who were ASM naïve were grouped based on whether ASM treatment initiation included LEV or OXC. The comparison group included children without epilepsy and without ASM exposure. Crude incidence rate (IR; n per 1000 person-years) and IR ratio (IRR; with 95% confidence interval [CI]) were estimated for nontrauma fracture (NTFx), a claims-based proxy for fragigility therapies.
Initiating OXC, but not LEV, therapy among 4-13-year-olds with epilepsy is associated with an elevated risk of fragility fracture. Studies are needed to determine whether these children could benefit from adjunct bone fragility therapies.HLE-B3 cell line, a human lens epithelial cell line, was used to examine the anti-glycative and anti-oxidative protection of aqueous extract prepared from steamed red amaranth leaves against high glucose induced injury. Phytochemical profile of this aqueous extract was analyzed. HLE-B3 cells were pretreated by this aqueous extract at 0.25%, 0.5%, or 1%, and followed by high glucose treatment. Results showed that the content of phenolic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, and triterpenoids in this aqueous extract was in the range of 1,107-2,861 mg/100 g dry weight. High glucose decreased cells viability and suppressed Bcl-2 mRNA expression. This aqueous extract pretreatments raised 11-42% cell survival and upregulated 20-47% Bcl-2 mRNA expression. High glucose reduced Na+ -K+ ATPase activity and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). This aqueous extract raised 27-40% Na+ -K+ ATPase activity, and 18-51% MMP. High glucose stimulated the generation of total advanced glycative endproducts (AGEs), methylglyoxal, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). This aqueous extract pretreatments lowered total AGEs, methylglyoxal, and ROS levels in the range of 0.38-1.17 folds, 1.7-4.9 nmol/mg protein, and 0.35-1.06 relative fluorescence unit/mg protein. High glucose upregulated mRNA expression of aldose reductase, nuclear factor kappa B, and p38. This aqueous extract pretreatments decreased mRNA expression of these factors in the range of 75-159%, 57-151%, and 54-166%. High glucose downregulated mRNA expression of nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2). This aqueous extract pretreatments increased 12-38% Nrf2 mRNA expression. These results suggested that this aqueous extract might be a potent nutritional supplement to prevent diabetic retinopathy.
Unhappiness, stress, and burnout will often lead to low academic performance among dental students. Perseverance and passion for long-term goal, known as grit, could overcome these despondent emotions. Our Study is looking at whether grit should be added as another domain during the interview process. The main objective of this study was to determine the association between grit and happiness among Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) dental students. In addition to that, the prevalence of gritty and happy dental students in UiTM was also determined and compared across the years of study.
This was a cross-sectional study. Validated Short Grit Scale (Grit-S) and Pemberton Happiness Index (PHI) were distributed to all 409 undergraduate dental students in Faculty of Dentistry, UiTM through their class representatives. Scores for both grit and happiness were calculated according to their instruction manual. Data were analyzed using SPSS Version 25 by descriptive analysis, one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearsoional element in selecting upcoming dental students.Mating systems of haploid species such as fungi, algae, and bryophytes are either heterothallic (self-incompatible) with two sex phenotypes (male and female, or mating type minus and plus in isogamous species) or homothallic (self-compatible) with only a bisexual phenotype producing zygotes within a clone. The anisogamous volvocine green alga Pleodorina starrii is a haploid species previously reported to have a heterothallic mating system. Here, we found that two additional culture strains originating from the same water system of P. starrii were taxonomically identified as P. starrii and produced male and female gametes and zygotes within a clone (bisexual). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/U0126.html Sequences of rapidly evolving plastid genome regions were identical between the bisexual and unisexual (male or female) P. starrii strains. Intercrossings between the bisexual and unisexual strains demonstrated normal thick-walled zygotes and high survivability of F1 strains. Thus, these strains belong to the same biological species. Pleodorina starrii has a new haploid mating system that is unique in having three sex phenotypes, namely, male, female, and bisexual. Genetic analyses suggested the existence of autosomal "bisexual factor" locus independent of volvocine male and female determining regions. The present findings increase our understanding of the initial evolutionary step of transition from heterothallism to homothallism.Texture of meat is a critical factor in oral processing and bolus formation, especially for people suffering from dysphagia. The present study evaluated and compared the texture changes of beef semitendinosus muscles upon cooking, using sensory panelists and instrumental texture profile analysis. Cooking losses were also estimated. The correlation between instrumental and sensory parameters were established. Training with sensory texture profile enabled panelists to clearly identify and describe meat textural attributes except cohesiveness and springiness. Increased cooking temperature (65-85°C) and time (30-60 min) significantly (p less then .05) increased hardness, chewiness, and cook loss of beef whereas adhesiveness and juiciness decreased significantly. The correlation data showed significant positive correlations between instrumental and sensory hardness, chewiness, and adhesiveness and poor correlations between cohesiveness and springiness. Results show that the texture profile analyzer has a possibility to replace sensory analysis for hardness, chewiness, and adhesiveness; however, future work is needed to address cohesiveness and springiness of meat.
