rative monitoring of risk factors, might help to identify patients at high risk for severe postoperative complications, and thus reduce surgical morbidity and mortality.
In patients undergoing surgery for gynecological cancer, preoperative evaluation of performance status according to ECOG, domains of quality of life and nutritional status, as well as intraoperative monitoring of risk factors, might help to identify patients at high risk for severe postoperative complications, and thus reduce surgical morbidity and mortality.
To establish contact lens wear and care practices during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.
A 58-item anonymous online survey was distributed during the period 30th April to 10th May via Qualtrics. The survey explored a) demographic characteristics (age, sex, general health and where they were living during lockdown), b) changes in their contact lens use during lockdown, c) hygiene and contact lens compliance and d) concerns associated with contact lens wear and ways to support wearers during the pandemic.
Two hundred and sixty responses were analysed (38.8 ± 11.4 years old, 75% female). Three-quarters of participants reported that they were self-isolating or rigorously following social distancing advice. Sixty-seven percent of participants reported using their contact lenses less during the pandemic. Respondents were found to be compliant with handwashing prior to inserting and removing contact lenses (in both cases 97% doing this 'most times' or 'every time'). However, only 44 % complied with the '20 s rplications during the pandemic. Modifiable factors that need particular attention in Spain include handwashing for at least 20s before lens handling, drying hands with single use paper towels, including a rub-and-rinse step for reusable lenses, lens case cleaning and renewal, avoidance of water exposure and when to cease lens wear during the pandemic.Since the Okinawan islands are located in the southernmost part of Japan, where the climate is subtropical, several episodes of influenza epidemics occur during the summer season. More recently, we have demonstrated that summer influenza epidemics occur every year. After the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) began in January 2020, measures to avoid disease transmission have been widely promoted in Japan, such as the use of masks, handwashing, remote work, and cancellation of large events. These measures might also have reduced the spread of other infectious diseases, such as the seasonal influenza. Based on this background, we evaluated weekly influenza activity in the 2019/2020 season. After the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the summer influenza in the Okinawa prefecture disappeared in 2020. The reasons for the disappearance of summer influenza in Okinawa are discussed herein.
Pulmonary haemorrhage (PH) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a rare but potentially fatal complication due to its high mortality. Early treatment benefits the outcome. Reports on predictive factors of PH in SLE patients are scarce.
To describe a case series of PH in SLE patients that were attended in the Rheumatology Section of the J. M. Cullen Hospital and to compare this data with published results.
Patients with SLE (1982-1997 ACR criteria) and PH diagnosed by clinical criteria (cough, dyspnoea, haemoptysis), haemoglobin below 12g/dL or drop greater than 2 points, new radiological infiltrate and bronchioalveolar lavage, monitored between June 1987 and December 2019 were studied. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment and prognosis data related to PH were analysed.
From a database of 306 SLE patients, 25 (8.2%) developed 29 episodes of PH. PH was the first manifestation of SLE in 8 patients. Renal involvement was the most frequent manifestation prior to the development of PH. SLE activi patients with renal involvement and mechanical respiratory support had higher mortality than SLE patients without them.Chronic Azithromycin (AZM) is a common treatment for lung infection. Among adults at risk of cardiac events, AZM use has been associated with cardiovascular harm. We assessed cardiovascular safety of AZM among children with CF, as a secondary analysis of a placebo-controlled, clinical trial, in which study drug was taken thrice-weekly for a planned 18 months. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/o-pentagalloylglucose.html Safety assessments using electrocardiogram (ECG) occurred at study enrollment, and then after 3 weeks and 18 months of participation. Among 221 study participants with a median of 18 months follow-up, increased corrected QT interval (QTc) of ≥30 msec was rare, at 3.4 occurrences per 100 person-years; and incidence of QTc prolongation was no higher in the AZM arm than the placebo arm (1.8 versus 5.4 per 100 person-years). No persons experienced QTc intervals above 500 msec. Long-term chronic AZM use was not associated with increased QT prolongation.Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPSIIIB) is one of the lysosomal storage diseases, clinically related to developmental delay in the early phase and loss of skills in the late phases of the disease. The disease is caused by homozygous mutations in the NAGLU gene. Spastic paraplegia54 (SPG54) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by homozygous mutations in the DDHD2 gene. Clinical features are progressive spasticity and weakness in the lower limbs and corpus callosum agenesis. We report on two siblings in a consanguineous family, presenting both the clinical and molecular diagnoses of MPSIIIB and SPG54 with novel mutations by using whole exome sequencing (WES). This interesting finding shows that we should be aware of the importance of using WES for diagnosing rare diseases in consanguineous families.Moyamoya disease (MMD) is characterized by the spontaneous occlusion of the distal internal carotid arteries and resultant neo-angiogenesis of fragile collateral blood vessels. Direct and indirect revascularization surgeries have shown to effectively reduce stroke risks in paediatric MMD, whereby the latter is a more utilised technique in children. This study was undertaken to determine the outcomes of revascularization in Singapore's multi-ethnic, Southeast Asian paediatric population. This is an ethics-approved study conducted in Singapore's 2 tertiary children hospital units KK Women's and Children's Hospital and National University Hospital. Sixteen patients with a diagnosis of ischaemic-type MMD are recruited between 01 January 2002 to 31 January 2019; and a total of 24 surgeries are undertaken (24 cerebral hemispheres). There are 2 cases of stroke within 30 days post-surgery. However, no stroke recurrence is observed beyond 30 days after surgery in all patients. Four patients reported recurrent transient ischaemic attack symptoms in the follow-up period ranging from 3 months to 12 years.
