Primary mucosal melanomas are rare neoplasms that occur in the mouth, esophagus, nasopharynx, larynx, and anogenital mucosa. Mucosal melanomas are rare, accounting for approximately one percent of all melanomas. Of the mucosal melanomas that occur in the head and neck, oral mucosal melanomas compose approximately 25 percent. Here, we present a case of an amelanotic oral mucosal melanoma of the mucosal lip in a 77-year-old male patient with a history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The patient presented with a pink, nonpigmented, pedunculated mass on the left superior mucosal lip. Histopathologic examination of the biopsy specimen revealed a diagnosis of a superficial spreading type of malignant melanoma with a nodular component. The patient was referred to a tertiary care center for further management. Multiple risk factors exist for developing melanoma, including immunosuppression. Lymphoproliferative disorders, such as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, lead to inherent immunosuppression, which can be exacerbated by chemotherapy treatments. Cases of oral mucosal melanoma have a poor prognosis due to delayed diagnosis, anatomic location, and aggressive behavior. Surgical resection is first-line therapy, with regional lymph-node dissection of the neck is recommended in most cases. Radiotherapy and targeted molecular therapy, such as c-KIT inhibitors, can also be used.Nonsurgical rhinoplasty is a good treatment choice when surgery is not a viable option. However, serious complications, including blindness or cerebral ischemia, can occur given this area is one of external and internal carotid anastomosis. Here, we describe a case of a patient with a septum ulcer secondary to local ischemia postnasal fillling with hyaluronic acid without skin lesion. Due to the rarity of the condition, her diagnosis was made late, but she was treated with hyaluronidase and showed total resolution.Pretibial myxedema (PM) is a rare extrathyroid condition seen in about 0.5 to 4.3 percent of individuals with hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease, often presenting with associated thyroid orbitopathy. In most cases, patients with PM have elevated levels of thyroid antibodies, such as thyroid peroxidase (TPO), thyroglobulin, and-most especially-thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies. We present a rare case of biopsy-proven PM in a euthyroid patient with no history of Graves' disease or Hashimoto's disease. TPO and thyroglobulin antibody counts were slightly elevated but less than what is typically seen in PM and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibodies (thyrotrophin-binding inhibitor immunoglobulin) were negative.BACKGROUND Ultraviolet radiation exposure is the most prominent modifible risk factor for developing both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. OBJECTIVE We sought to elucidate sun-protective behaviors among active members of the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA), a nationwide nonprofit organization comprising beach lifeguards, and to identify positive and negative predictors of sun protective behaviors. METHODS This was a pilot, cross-sectional survey study. All USLA lifeguards aged 18 years or older were invited to complete a 19-item survey. Data were collected anonymously at the 2018 USLA National Lifeguard Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Participant characteristics and sun-protective behaviors (e.g., hat, sunglasses, protective clothing, sunscreen, and seeking shade) were surveyed. A composite score (0-10 points) was created based on sun-protective behaviors. Simple linear regression models were fit to assess the relationship between lifeguard characteristics and the sun-behavior composite score and a multiple linear regression model was used to assess their overall positive or negative effect on composite scores. RESULTS A total of 215 USLA lifeguards completed the survey study; of these, 64.2% were male and the average age was 34.2 years. The most common sun-protective behavior was wearing sunglasses (85%), followed by applying sunscreen (65%), wearing a hat (46.7%), seeking shade (38.6%), and wearing protective clothing (34.0%). The overall average composite score was 7.5±1.9 points. In the multiple linear regression model, female sex (β=-0.85; p=0.0012), desiring a tan (β=-1.26; p=0.0008), and working more summer daytime hours (β=-0.49; p=0.049) negatively impacted composite scores. CONCLUSIONS USLA beach lifeguards are subject to sun-exposure patterns and practiced sun-protective behaviors that potentially place them at higher risk for skin cancer.OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to assess compatibility of tretinoin 0.05% acne lotion with foundation makeup. DESIGN This was a single-center, evaluator-blinded, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Participants were randomized to apply tretinoin 0.05% lotion to either the right or left side of the face before applying full-face foundation makeup. SETTING Participants were enrolled at a single center in the United States. PARTICIPANTS Female individuals aged 18 to 50 years who used facial foundation makeup ≥5 days per week were included. MEASUREMENTS Investigator-assessed grading for foundation coverage and participant evaluations of makeup appearance were conducted at post-makeup application (Post-Makeup) and Hour 6 (6H) timepoints. Antera 3D® images were taken for skin texture roughness analysis and tolerability evaluations were performed at baseline, post-tretinoin application, Post-Makeup, and 6H timepoints. RESULTS A total of 30 participants were enrolled and 29 completed the study. There were no significant differences between tretinoin treated and untreated sides for any outcomes of investigator-assessed grading of foundation (percentage coverage, blotchiness, overall coverage, skin tone evenness, visual smoothness). There was a small but statistically significant worsening in percent coverage at 6H versus Post-Makeup on the untreated side, but not the treated side. https://www.selleckchem.com/ As rated by participants, even/full coverage and skin smoothness were significantly better on the tretinoin-lotion treated versus the untreated side. Three-dimensional imaging showed there were no significant differences in skin roughness between the treated and untreated sides. CONCLUSION Tretinoin 0.05% lotion did not interfere with facial makeup application or wearability and was well tolerated.
