Biosorption of Cd, Hg and Ni was limited by both pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order reaction rates. For Cr and Cu, the reaction was controlled by film diffusion and pseudo-first order rates. To develop a typology of the local sex work industry, we conducted 39 in-depth interviews with foreign-born and US-born Latina female sex workers, Latino immigrant clients, and key informants such as bartenders and brothel managers in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Interview transcripts were coded through an iterative process, and descriptions of sex work were grouped into types. Three types of direct sex work (the street, houses that operate as brothels, and weekend brothels operating out of hotels), three types of indirect sex work (bar workers, opportunistic, and as-needed), and one type that could be either direct or indirect (individual arrangements) were identified. Understanding the local sex industry and its variability has implications for developing and implementing programmes and interventions tailored to the context of sex work type in order to reduce HIV transmission.Many human studies suggest a benefit of tea consumption on bone health. The study objective was to compare the ability of different tea types to promote mineralization. Saos-2 cells underwent mineralization (5 days) in the presence of tea (white WT, green GT, black BT, green rooibos GR, or red rooibos RR; 1 μg/mL of polyphenols) or control. Total polyphenol content (TPC, Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent), antioxidant capacity (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl [DPPH] scavenging), mineralization (Alizarin Red staining), gene expression quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR), and cell activity (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay) were determined. TPC was highest in GT and BT. The ability of each tea to inhibit DPPH also differed (WT, GT > RR) after normalizing for polyphenol quantity. Each tea increased mineralization and differences were observed among types (GT/BT/GR/RR > WT, GT = BT = GR, RR > BT/GT). mRNA expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase (NPP1) remained unchanged, whereas osteopontin (OPN) and sclerostin (SOST) were reduced in cells treated with tea, regardless of type. At 24- and 48-h postexposure to tea, cell activity was greater in cells receiving any of the teas compared with vehicle control. Supplementation increased mineralization regardless of tea type with both rooibos teas and black tea stimulating greater mineralization than WT, whereas green tea is similar to the others. While future study is needed to confirm in vivo effects, the results suggest that consuming any of the teas studied may benefit bone health.
Kittens have unique requirements for care in a shelter setting given their higher susceptibility to infectious disease and socialization needs. Significant time and resources are necessary to care for this vulnerable population and dedicated kitten nurseries are one way to meet the requirements of kittens too young for neutering and rehoming. However, young kittens remain at a higher risk of dying relative to adult cats, even in specialized settings. Efforts to investigate kitten mortality have focused on post-mortem findings and little is known about pre-mortem clinical signs that may be associated with death. The purpose of this study was to elucidate predictors of mortality in underage kittens.
The medical records of kittens aged <8 weeks reared in a kitten nursery in New York City during 2017 were examined. The study aimed to (1) test MRI repeatability of measurements of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), optic nerve diameter (OND) and eye globe transverse diameter (ETD); (2) investigate the associations between the OND, ONSD and ETD; (3) assess whether these measurements are affected by age or body weight; and (4) test the association between ONSD, OND, ETD and ONSD ETD ratio with presumed intracranial pressure (ICP) status.
This was a retrospective and blinded study where patients were allocated to presumed normal or intracranial hypertension groups based on MRI findings. The ONSD and ETD were measured and recorded. Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to investigate interobserver agreement. Data were analysed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, two-sample
-test and general linear model ANOVA.
Seventy-seven cats were included, 62 with presumed normal ICP and 15 with presumed intracranial hypertension. The ICC showed moderate-to-good reliability for all measurements. Positive correlations were identified for (1) ETD and weight; (2) ONSD and age; (3) OND and age; (4) ONSD and ETD; (5) ONSD ETD ratio and presumed ICP status; and (6) ONSD and presumed ICP status. No difference was detected between the presumed normal and intracranial hypertension groups and ONSD, as well as ONSD ETD ratio and presumed ICP status when patient age was considered.

Methodology Six cross-disciplinary electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Arts & Humanities) were systematically searched resulting in a total of 15 qualitative and mixed-methods studies included in a thematic synthesis. Results Photo-elicitation and photovoice were identified as the main photographic methods employed in recovery research along with less common, but nonetheless creative, techniques.
