iCare tonometers are easy-to-use and portable devices for measuring the intraocular pressure (IOP). Purpose was to evaluate the IOP values measured by both novel iCare ic100 and conventional model TA01i devices in unselected population.
IOP was measured with iCare ic100 and TA01i tonometers in 149 participants aged 32-33 years (born in 1985 or 1986) of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort Eye 2 study. The right eye of each participant was selected for analysis. We also collected data on axial length, corneal curvature and central corneal thickness (CCT). Bland-Altman plot was used for comparing the values obtained by these devices.
Mean IOP measured with the ic100 device was 13.8 (3.4) mmHg, with TA01i it was 12.5 (3.0) mmHg. The mean difference between these devices was 1.30 mmHg (
< 0.001) and R
was 0.694. In Bland-Altman analysis, the agreement between the two tonometers ic100 and TA01i was constantly good (mean difference -1.30, ic100 device showing higher measures). There was a correlation between IOP and CCT (
= 0.269,
< 0.001 for ic100 and
= 0.255,
= 0.002 for TA01i), but not with IOP and corneal curvature or IOP and axial length.
In summary, we found ic100 rebound tonometry to be both reliable and effective, although CCT may influence IOP measurements with ic100 and TA01i. Therefore, iCare ic100 is suitable for IOP measurement in large cohort studies.

Role of key microorganisms and their specific interactions with As-bearing minerals was demarcated under organic carbon- amended and -unamended conditions. Acinetobacter (50.8 %), Brevundimonas (7.9 %), Sideroxydans (3.4 %), Alkanindiges (3.0 %) dominated the GWM. The microbiome catalysed considerable alterations in As-bearing mineral [Fe-(hydr)oxide and aluminosilicate] phases resulting in substantial changes in overall geochemistry and release of As (65 μg/L) and Fe (118 μg/L). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/epz-6438.html Synergistic roles of autotrophic, NH4+-oxidizing Archaea (Thaumarchaeota) and chemoheterotrophic bacteria (Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas, Geobacter) of diverse metabolic abilities (NH4+-oxidizing, NO3-, As/Fe-reducing) were noted for observed changes. Organic carbon supported enhanced microbial growth and As mobilization (upto 403.2 μg As/L) from multiple mineral phases (hematite, magnetite, maghemite, biotite, etc.). In presence of high organic carbon, concerted actions of anaerobic, hydrocarbon-utilizing, As-, Fe-reducing Rhizobium, fermentative Escherichia, anaerobic Bacillales, metal-reducing and organic acid-utilizing Pseudomonas and Achromobacter were implicated in altering sediment mineralogy and biogeochemistry. Increase in abundance of arrA, arsC, bssA genes, and dissolution of Fe, Ca, Mg, Mn confirmed that dissimilatory-, cytosolic-As reduction, and mineral weathering fuelled by anaerobic (hydro)carbon metabolism are the predominant mechanisms of As release in aquifers of Bengal basin.Cyclophosphamide (CP) and Cisplatin (CDDP) are antineoplastic drugs widely used in the treatment of neoplastic diseases that have been detected in the aquatic environment. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the presence in the aquatic environment of these two drugs and their effects on freshwater and marine invertebrates, which includes good model species in ecotoxicology and risk assessment programs. The consumption levels, occurrence in freshwater and marine ecosystems, and the impacts exerted on aquatic organisms, even at low concentrations, justifies this review and the selection of these two drugs. Both pharmaceuticals were detected in different aquatic environments, with concentrations ranging from ng L-1 up to 687.0 μg L-1 (CP) and 250 μg L-1 (CDDP). The available studies showed that CP and CDDP induce individual and sub-individual impacts on aquatic invertebrate species. The most common effects reported were changes in the reproductive function, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, cytotoxicity and neurotoxicity. The literature used in this review supports the need to increase monitoring studies concerning the occurrence of antineoplastic drugs in the aquatic environment since negative effects have been reported even at trace concentrations (ng L-1). Furthermore, marine ecosystems should be considered as a priority since less is known on the occurrence and effects of antineoplastic drugs in this environment comparing to freshwater ecosystems. In this study, a novel Co9S8 nanoparticles-embedded porous carbon (Co9S8-PC) was designed as an effective reusable sorbent for Hg0 capture from smelting flue gas. Some flue gas components can create more active sites on Co9S8-PC for Hg0 adsorption, but compete with Hg0 for the same sulfur sites over nano Co1-xS/Co3S4 (CoS) and Co1-xS/Co3S4 embedded porous carbon (CoS-PC), which can be ascribed to the difference in crystal structure between Co9S8 and Co1-xS/Co3S4. Therefore, Co9S8-PC shows **** better Hg0 capture ability than CoS and CoS-PC under smelting flue gas. O2, SO2 and HCl improve Hg0 adsorption on Co9S8-PC mainly through creating Co3+ site, but H2O has neglectable effect on Hg0 capture. Co9S8-PC shows a remarkably large Hg0 adsorption capacity of 43.18 mg/g, which is greatly higher than the representative metal sulfides for Hg0 removal from smelting flue gas. During Hg0 adsorption, Co3+ is the primary site to directly interact with Hg0, and the adsorbed mercury exists as HgS. Co9S8-PC exhibits an excellent recyclability for capturing Hg0, which is mainly assigned to the replenishment of consumed Co3+ site by O2, SO2 and HCl. Therefore, Co9S8 nanoparticles-embedded porous carbon is an efficient, sustainable and highly recyclable sorbent for Hg0 recovery from smelting flue gas.Dispersants reduce oil-water interfacial tension making the separation of oil-water emulsions challenging. In this study, crude oil stabilized by the dispersant, Corexit EC9500A, was emulsified in synthetic sea water using a range of Corexit/crude oil concentration ratios (up to 10% by volume). With an interfacial tension of only 8.0 mJ/m2 at 0.5 mL(Corexit)/L, approximately 50% of the crude was dispersed into droplets less then 10 µm. Near complete rejection of oil in crossflow separation tests was accompanied by a precipitous flux decline attributable in part to dispersant- and salinity-induced decrease in membrane's oleophobicity (4.2 mJ/m2 decrease in surface energy). Screening of electrostatic interactions prompted oil coalescence that occurred at the membrane surface but not in the bulk of the emulsion. Real-time in situ visualization by Direct Observation Through Membrane gave direct evidence of surface coalescence pointing to both its detrimental effects (spread of contiguous films) and possible advantages (removal of large droplets by crossflow shear).
