Inherited fatty acid oxidation diseases in their mild forms often present as metabolic myopathies. Carnitine Palmitoyl Transferase 2 (CPT2) deficiency, one such prototypical disorder is associated with compromised myotube differentiation. Here, we show that CPT2-deficient myotubes exhibit defects in focal adhesions and redox balance, exemplified by increased SOD2 expression. We document unprecedented alterations in the cellular prion protein PrPC, which directly arise from the failure in CPT2 enzymatic activity. We also demonstrate that the loss of PrPC function in normal myotubes recapitulates the defects in focal adhesion, redox balance and differentiation hallmarks monitored in CPT2-deficient cells. These results are further corroborated by studies performed in muscles from Prnp-/- ****. Altogether, our results unveil a molecular scenario, whereby PrPC dysfunction governed by faulty CPT2 activity may drive aberrant focal adhesion turnover and hinder proper myotube differentiation. Our study adds a novel facet to the involvement of PrPC in diverse physiopathological situations.We investigated the visuotopic organization of macaque posterior parietal cortex (PPC) by combining functional imaging (fMRI) and wide-field retinotopic mapping in two macaque monkeys. Whole brain blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal was recorded while monkeys maintained central fixation during the presentation of large rotating wedges and expending/contracting annulus of a "shaking" fruit basket, designed to maximize the recruitment of PPC neurons. Results of the surface-based population receptive field (pRF) analysis reveal a new cluster of four visuotopic areas at the confluence of the parieto-occipital and intra-parietal sulci, in a location previously defined histologically and anatomically as the posterior intra-parietal (PIP) region. This PIP cluster groups together two recently described areas (CIP1/2) laterally and two newly identified ones (PIP1/2) medially, whose foveal representations merge in the fundus of the intra-parietal sulcus. This paper purports to review recent relevant publications on the efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine in treating allergic diseases, to illustrate thepertinent mechanisms of action of TCM, and to explore the possible role of TCM in the management of allergic diseases in the foreseeable future. As TCMembodies multiple treatment modalities, only the most popular two, namely CHM (Chinese herbal medicine) and acupuncture, were discussed. Publications,especially reviews involving randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the use of TCM on allergic diseases, published up to June 2019 were reviewed andanalyzed. Papers reporting the mechanisms of action of TCM in allergic diseases were also included. Other publications in Chinese were also discussed.
A startling escalation in the incidence of allergic diseases in the last several decades has posed tremendous social and financial burdens on the community.Failing to locate a cure for these chronic diseases, patients have resorted to using alternative medications and asthma or when applied as an adjunct to conventional western therapy. Evidence of its utility in atopic eczema and urticaria is not definitive. It is recommended that acupuncture be integrated into the therapy of allergic rhinitis and asthma, and that CHM be used as an adjunct in the treatment of allergic diseases on an individual basis.Involved with various bodily functions, including ingestion and swallowing, the tongue is an important organ. We measured resting tongue hardness using real-time tissue elastography (RTE) to establish a simple tongue evaluation for patients who may have limited capacities to follow commands. Relationships between tongue hardness, thickness, and pressure were investigated, using both intra- and extraoral probes. Assessments were performed for a total of 27 healthy adults (11 male, 16 female, average age 26.4 ± 1.8 years). Measurements of tongue hardness and thickness were made using strain ratios (SR), and averaged across nine images. Maximum tongue pressure was determined using a tongue pressure device. A negative correlation was observed between intraorally measured tongue hardness and maximum tongue pressure (r = -0.76, p less then 0.01). A positive correlation between extraorally measured tongue thickness and maximum tongue pressure was observed (r = 0.59, p less then 0.01). Additionally, significant differences were observed between males and females with regards to intraorally measured tongue hardness (p = 0.02), maximum tongue pressure (p = 0.02), and extraorally measured tongue thickness (p less then 0.01). The results of this study demonstrated the clinical applicability of RTE-based tongue hardness measurements, and suggest the feasibility of predicting tongue strength based on extraoral tongue thickness measurements.
The amount of apical root resorption when using the torque-segmented archwire (TSA) was investigated as well as the extent and direction of the therapeutically indicated apical movement and the treatment duration.
The degree of apical root resorption in 18randomly chosen ClassII and ClassI patients treated with the TSA, as well as in 18conventionally treated patients were evaluated using pre- and posttreatment panoramic radiographs. The sagittal and vertical apical movements and inclination changes were determined based on pre- and posttreatment lateral cephalograms. Nonparametric tests were applied to test between treatment groups and steps. The Mann-WhitneyU test, Kruskal-Wallis, Pearson correlation and Wilcoxon signed-rank test were applied for statistical analysis (p < 0.05).
The incidence of root resorptions was 89-94.4% in low or moderate level. The relative root-crown ratio (rRCR) was not statistically different between the TSA and control groups except tooth12. The axis of the incisors in the TSA group was significantly improved.
