Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an accessible and widely used biomarker. NLR may be used as an early marker of poor prognosis in patients with COVID-19.

To evaluate the prognostic value of the NLR in patients diagnosed with COVID-19.

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. Observational studies that reported the association between baseline NLR values (ie, at hospital admission) and severity or all-cause mortality in COVID-19 patients were included. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Random effects models and inverse variance method were used for meta-analyses. The effects were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Small study effects were assessed with the Egger's test.

We analysed 61 studies (n=15522 patients), 58 cohorts, and 3 case-control studies. An increase of one unit of NLR was associated with higher odds of severity (OR 6.22; 95%CI 4.93 to 7.84; P<.001) and higher odds of all-cause mortality (OR 12.6; 95%CI 6.88 to 23.06; P<.001). In our sensitivity analysis, we found that 41 studies with low risk of bias and moderate heterogeneity (I
=53% and 58%) maintained strong association between NLR values and both outcomes (severity OR 5.36; 95% CI 4.45 to 6.45; P<.001; mortality OR 10.42 95% CI 7.73 to 14.06; P=.005).

This study leverages remote sensing products from different sources-fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR), based on optical data, and canopy density, derived from microwave data-and random forest algorithms to assess drought recovery over Australian natural vegetation during a 20-year period centered on the MD. Post-drought recovery was prevalent across the continent, with 6 out of 10 drought events seeing full recovery within about 6 months. Canopy density was slower to recover than leaf area seen in FPAR. The probability of full recovery was most strongly controlled by drought return interval, post-drought hydrological condition, and drought length. Full recovery was seldom observed when drought events occurred at intervals of 3 months or less, and moderately dry (standardized water balance anomaly [SWBA] within [-1, -0.76]) post-drought conditions resulted in less complete recovery than wet (SWBA > 0.3) post-drought conditions. Press droughts, which are long term but not extreme, delayed recovery more than pulse droughts (short term but extreme) and led to a higher frequency of persistent decline. Accordingly, the CONNECT CVD quality enhancement initiative provides a contemporary "snapshot" of the clinical features and antithrombotic management of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) patients in Canada.

Canadian cardiologists (49 cardiologists from six provinces) undertook a retrospective chart audit of 10 ASCVD patients in their outpatient practice who met the Cardiovascular Outcomes for People Using Anticoagulation Strategy-like criteria from May 2018 to April 2019.

This study was conducted in a tertiary referral hospital between January 2018 and July 2020. Sixty-five patients diagnosed with NFPA and age- and gender-matched controls (n=40) were included.

The average age in the NFPA group was 37.46±11.2years and in the control group was 41.97±14.88years, and they did not differ significantly (P=.103). SS mucosal thickness greater than 1mm was determined in a higher proportion of NFPA (67.7%) than in the control group (12.5%) (P<.001). A mucosal thickness greater than 3mm was only present in the NFPA group (43.1%). The distance between optic nerves was significantly longer in the NFPA group compared with control (P<.001).
