  • Due to the increased availability of high-frequency measurements of stream chemistry provided by in situ sensors, researchers have gained more access to relationships between stream discharge and constituent concentrations (C-Q relationships) at event-scales. Existing studies reveal that event-scale C-Q relationships are mostly non-linear and exhibit temporal lags between peaks (or troughs) of hydrographs and chemographs, resulting in apparent hysteresis effects. In this paper, we summarize and introduce tools and methods in hysteresis analysis, especially the history and progresses of metrics to quantify hysteresis patterns. In addition, this paper provides a typical workflow to conduct event-scale hysteresis analysis, such as how to obtain the access to high-frequency measurements, existing methods to delineate storm events, approaches to classify and quantify hysteresis patterns, possible features/properties controlling hysteresis patterns, statistical methods to identify features at play, and strategies to deliver the inferences from hysteresis analysis. Lastly, we discuss some potential limitations that arise in the workflow and possible future work to address the challenges, including the development of advanced quantitative hysteresis metrics, generalized and standardized tools to delineate events and the integration of hysteresis analysis with numerical modeling. This paper aims to provide a critical overview of technical approaches for hysteresis analysis for researchers and hopefully foster their interests to advance our understanding of complex mechanisms in event-scale hydro-biogeochemical processes.
    Depression seriously threatens Chinese elderly. This study analysis the prevalence of depressive symptoms (DS) and its related factors among China's aging population.

    All participants were from the PINDEC project. Multi-stage clustered sampling was conducted. A total of 20,019 participants aged 60 or above completed the DS screening in 2016, and among them, 19,420 were taken into analysis. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to explore the related factors of DS.

    Of the 19,420 adults, 9,444 were male (48.63%) and 9,976 were female (51.37%). The prevalence of DS was 15.94%. The risk factors of DS were female gender (OR=1.198, 1.097-1.308), daily alcohol consumption (OR=1.480, 1.284-1.705), disturbed sleep (OR=1.864, 1.716-2.024), chronic diseases (OR=1.214, 1.181-1.249), greater age (OR=1.012, 1.077-1.018), impaired cognition (OR=2.567,2.202-2.993), poor ADL performance (OR=1.545, 1.380-1.729), and insufficient social communication (OR=1.241, 1.134-1.358). Protective factors of DS included higher education level, greater BMI (OR=0.986, 0.975-0.997), living in urban areas (OR=0.677, 0.611-0.749), and leisure activities such as playing cards or mahjong (OR=0.816, 0.730-0.912). For the DS risk factors, multiplicative interaction was found between cognition and ADL performance, in addition to cognition and social communication.

    Causality cannot be drawn from this cross-sectional survey. And the elderly who were looked after by nannies or living in nursing homes were not taken into analysis.

    The purpose of this study was to explore the association between perceived stress and depression among medical students and the mediating role of insomnia in this relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

    A cross-sectional survey was conducted from March to April 2020 in medical university. Levels of perceived stress, insomnia and depression were measured using Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). The descriptive analyses of the demographic characteristics and correlation analyses of the three variables were calculated. The significance of the mediation effect was obtained using a bootstrap approach with SPSS PROCESS macro.

    The mean age of medical students was 21.46 years (SD=2.50). Of these medical students, 10,185 (34.3%) were male and 19,478 (65.7%) were female. Perceived stress was significantly associated with depression (β=0.513, P<0.001). Insomnia mediated the association between perceived stress and depression (β=0.5proach for prevention of depression in medical students. Findings from this study indicated that it may be effective to reduce depression among medical students by improving sleep quality and easing perceived stress.
    Individuals with depression exhibit numerous interpersonal deficits. As effective use of gestures is critical for social communication, it is possible that depressed individuals' interpersonal deficits may be due to deficits in gesture performance. The present study thus compared gesture performance of depressed patients and controls and examined whether these deficits relate to cognitive and other domains of dysfunction.

    Gesture performance was evaluated in 30 depressed patients and 30 controls using the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia (TULIA). Clinical rating scales were assessed to determine if gesture deficits were associated with motor, cognitive or functional outcomes.

    Compared to controls, depressed patients exhibited impaired gesture performance with 2/3 of the patients demonstrating gesture deficits. Within depressed patients, gesture performance was highly correlated with working memory abilities. In contrast, no association between gesture performance and gestural knowledge, psychomotor retardation, depression severity, or frontal dysfunction was observed in patients.

    This is a cross-sectional study and a larger size would have allowed for confident detection of more subtle, but potentially relevant effects.

While the mean IL-10, IL-6, and CRP levels were the highest in the dialysis groups, there were no significantly differences any parameters for all groups. QoL was better in the KTr almost as in healthy controls but worse in the dialysis patients. The International Index of Erectile Function and Female Sexual Function Index were used to assess the sexual function in the first, second, and third months during the intervention and one month after the intervention. A higher score indicates a better sexual function. Repeated measure ANOVA, Chi-square and Fisher exact tests, independent t, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for data analysis. The SPSS software version 22 was used for data analysis. Sexual function scores of the intervention group were 35.9 at the beginning of the study, 34.1 in the first month, 37.4 in the second month, 34.8 in the third month, and 31.7 one month after the study. There was no significant difference in the scores of sexual function in the intervention group during the study. The mean scores of sexual function in the control group were 34.5, 34.4, 34.9, 33.8, and 33.9 at the beginning of the study, in the first month, in the second month, in the third month, and one month after the study, respectively (p > 0.05).     Data on the association of long-term variability of blood pressure (BP) with incident heart failure (HF) in individuals with Type 2 diabetes are scarce. We evaluated this association in a large community-based sample of adults with Type 2 diabetes.

    A total of 4200 participants with Type 2 diabetes who had available BP measurements at four visits (baseline and 12, 24, and 36months) in the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) study were included. Cox regression was used to generate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for HF. After adjusting for relevant confounders, the HR of incident HF for the highest vs. lowest quartile of SD of SBP was 1.77 (95% CI 1.01-3.09); the HR for the highest (vs. lowest) quartile of variability independent of the mean of SBP was 1.29 (95% CI 0.78-2.14). The adjusted HR for participants in the highest (compared with the lowest) quartile of SD of DBP was 1.61 (95% CI 1.01-2.59), and the adjusted HR for variability independent of the mean of DBP was 1.65 (95% CI 1.03-2.65).

Here, a highly-sensitive LFIA platform using compact and hierarchical magneto-fluorescent assemblies as both target-enrichment substrates and optical sensing labels is demonstrated. The large-pored dendritic templates are utilized for high-density incorporation of both superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (IOs) and quantum dots (QDs) within the vertical channels. The hierarchical structure is built via affinity-driven assembly of IOs and QDs from organic phase with silica surface and mercapto-organosilica intermediate layer, respectively. The sequential assembly with central-radial channels enables 3D loading of dual components and separately controlling of discrete functionalities. After the alkyl-organosilica encapsulation and silica sealing, the composite spheres exhibit high stabilities and compatibility with LFIA for procalcitonin (PCT) detection.

It offers a powerful means to create complex nanostructures which may not be possible by other methods. The macromolecular structures may be used as static templates for arranging proteins and other molecules. They are also capable of undergoing structural transformation in response to external signals, which may be exploited for sensing and actuation at the nanoscale. Such on-demand reconfigurations are executed mostly by DNA oligomers through base-pairing and/or strand displacement, demonstrating drastic shape changes between two different states, for example, open and close. Recent studies have developed new mechanisms to modulate the origami conformation in a controllable, progressive manner. Here we present several methods for conformational control of DNA origami nanostructures including chemical adducts and UV light as well as widely applied DNA oligomers. The detailed methods should be useful for beginners in the field of DNA nanotechnology.Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) functionalized with polyethyleneimine (PEI) and 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were used to obtain composites with isotactic polypropylene (iPP). The iPP/CuNPs composites were prepared at copper concentrations of 0.25-5.0 wt % by melt mixing, no evidence of oxidation of the CuNP was observed. Furthermore, the release of copper ions from iPP/CuNPs composites in an aqueous medium was studied. The release of cupric ions was higher in the composites with 2.5 and 5.0 wt %. These composites showed excellent antibacterial activity (AA) toward Pseudomona aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). The incorporation of CuNP into the iPP polymeric matrix slightly decreased the thermal stability of the composite material but improved the crystallinity and the storage modulus. This evidence suggests that CuNPs could work as nucleating agents in the iPP crystallization process. The iPP/CuNPs composites presented better AA properties compared to similar composites reported previously. Treatment credibility received high ratings, as did treatment satisfaction. Preliminary treatment effects showed significant improvements in emotion regulation with large effect sizes. Significant effects were also found for all secondary outcome variables ADHD symptom levels, depression, anxiety, and quality of life. All significant effects remained at the 3-month follow-up. In conclusion, GEARS should be considered a feasible treatment in an outpatient psychiatric setting. This study explores the impact of the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period on dietary habits, lifestyle changes, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet among the Italian population, through an online questionnaire, conducted from April to May 2020, involving 1519 participants. The 14-point Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) highlighted a medium Mediterranean diet adherence in 73.5% of responders, which principally included the younger population, aged 18-30 years (p less then 0.05). In regards to changes in eating habits, 33.5% of responders declared an influence of the pandemic period on nutritional practice. A decrease in alcohol consumption was reported by 81% of responders, while an increase in frozen food consumption was reported by 81.3% of responders. In addition, 58.8% reported positive weight modification (40.8%, +1-3 kg); physical activity reduction was reported for 70.5% of responders. The dynamic position of players from both teams, the ball and three elite referees allowed to capture the following performance metrics (i) assistant referees alignment with the second last defender; (ii) referee referee diagonal movement-a position density was computed and a principal component analysis was carried to identify the directions of greatest variability; and (iii) referee assessing the distance from the referee to the ball. All computations were processed when the ball was in-play and separated by 1st and 2nd halves. The first metric showed an alignment lower than 1 m between the assistant referee and the second last defender. The second metric showed that in the 1st half, the referee position ellipsis area was 548 m2, which increased during the 2nd half (671 m2). The third metric showed an increase in the distance from the referee to the ball and >80% of the distance between 5-30 m during the 2nd half. In this study, an experiment is conducted on the residual performance of real-scale siliceous aggregates-based reinforced concrete (RC) wall-slab connection (WSC) after the fire, using the simple calculation method (SCM) of standards (Eurocode, ACI, and NIST) for comparison and analysis. A description of the WSC specimen and detailed methods for the experiment are introduced. The fire test is conducted according to the fire scenario by dividing it into one-sided and two-sided heating based on the wall. In the post-fire residual performance test, the load-displacement and moment-deflection angle relationship according to the fire time are derived and discussed. In addition, the residual mechanical properties after the fire are derived for the 35 MPa siliceous concrete used in the wall-slab specimen. The load and moment, derived using SCM, are compared with the experimental results. In the present review, we will discuss about malnutrition and the importance of an early nutritional assessment during chemotherapy and treatment with novel checkpoint inhibitors, in order to prevent treatment-induced toxicities and to improve survival outcomes.The World Health Organization has declared the coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern; the outbreak has led to lockdowns in several parts of the world, and sudden changes in people's lifestyles. This study explores the impact of the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic period on dietary habits, lifestyle changes, and adherence to the Mediterranean diet among the Italian population, through an online questionnaire, conducted from April to May 2020, involving 1519 participants. The 14-point Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (MEDAS) highlighted a medium Mediterranean diet adherence in 73.5% of responders, which principally included the younger population, aged 18-30 years (p less then 0.05). In regards to changes in eating habits, 33.5% of responders declared an influence of the pandemic period on nutritional practice. A decrease in alcohol consumption was reported by 81% of responders, while an increase in frozen food consumption was reported by 81.3% of responders. In addition, 58.8% reported positive weight modification (40.8%, +1-3 kg); physical activity reduction was reported for 70.5% of responders. Our study contributes toward amplifying the investigation on the dietary habits and changes of the Italian population during the COVID-19 lockdown, although the pandemic is ongoing. The dynamic position of players from both teams, the ball and three elite referees allowed to capture the following performance metrics (i) assistant referees alignment with the second last defender; (ii) referee referee diagonal movement-a position density was computed and a principal component analysis was carried to identify the directions of greatest variability; and (iii) referee assessing the distance from the referee to the ball. All computations were processed when the ball was in-play and separated by 1st and 2nd halves. The first metric showed an alignment lower than 1 m between the assistant referee and the second last defender. The second metric showed that in the 1st half, the referee position ellipsis area was 548 m2, which increased during the 2nd half (671 m2). A description of the WSC specimen and detailed methods for the experiment are introduced. The method was shown to be linear in the quantitation range for all analytes. Intra- and inter-day accuracy and precision were between 80% and 120%. Furthermore, we found that the level of CORT in plasma and PFC increased, whereas that of 11-dehydrocorticosterone (11-DHCORT) as well as the ratio of 11-DHCORT and CORT declined in rats with CUMS-induced depression. The trends of these changes in central PFC and peripheral plasma were consistent. In conclusion, this study successfully established an UPLC-MS/MS method for simultaneous measurement of CORT and its metabolites, PROG and testosterone in rat plasma and PFC, and applied it to rats with depression. The study sample included general surgical patients aged 18-99 years admitted to one of the 519 study hospitals. Multilevel logistic regression and truncated negative binomial models were used to estimate the cross-sectional and longitudinal effects of the proportion of hospital BSN nurses on patient outcomes (i.e., in-hospital mortality, 7- and 30-day readmissions, length of stay). Between 2006 and 2016, the average proportion of BSN nurses in hospitals increased from 41% to 56%. Patients in hospitals that increased their proportion of BSN nurses over time had significantly reduced odds of risk-adjusted mortality (odds ratio [OR] 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.92-0.98), 7-day readmission (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.94-0.99) and 30-day readmission (OR 0.98, 95% CI 0.95-1.00), and shorter lengths of stay (incident rate ratio [IRR] 0.98, 95% CI 0.97-0.99). In this study, the effect of air-frying processing on plasmalogens oxidation was studied by lipidomic approach. Plasmalogens were always mixed with normal phospholipids, thus the lipid extract was treated with mild acid hydrolysis to rapidly degrade plasmalogens owing to the acid lability of vinyl ether linkage at sn-1 position. After hydrophilic interaction chromatography MS/MS analysis, there were three plasmalogen classes, plasmanylcholine, plasmanylethanolamine, and plasmanylinositol, completely separated, and each plasmalogen molecular species was identified and quantified. It indicated that the content of plasmalogens underwent an obvious decrease during the air-frying process. To weaken such effect, the influence of air-frying temperature was further inspected by multivariate statistical analyses. The main variables, including the ions of m/z 756.4927, 784.5486, 828.5812, etc., were revealed by unsupervised principle component analysis, supervised orthogonal partial least-square analysis, and variable importance in projection plot. As a conclusion, air-frying has health benefits in reducing fat content but destructive to plasmalogens, thus interventions are recommended to prevent the degradation of plasmalogens.

The main inclusion criteria were four or more days of palliative unit stay and being home discharge during the study period. Data on demographics, chronic diseases, mobilization disability, route of feeding, tracheostomy, sleep disturbances, pressure ulcers, and antidepressant use were collected. Potential factors associated with prolonged LOS tertiles were examined by ordinal regression analysis. Results A total of 287 discharges from the PCU to home were analyzed. Mean (SD) age was 70.5 (15.8) years, and there was a mal LOS in the PCU in patients discharged home.
    miRNAs control various biological functions such as cell proliferation, differentiation, signaling pathways, apoptosis and metabolism. Recently, it has been shown that there is a relationship between changes in miRNA expression and the development of acromegaly. Studies are needed to identify new disease-specific miRNAs. The aim of the current study is to evaluate plasma miR-29c-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p steady-state levels in acromegaly. Another aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in the levels of these miRNAs in patients with inadequate control and controlled acromegaly with somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy. These miRNAs targeting the IGF-1 gene were determined by in silico estimation.

    The study included 30 healthy controls (HC) and 20 patients with acromegaly. Anterior pituitary functions and disease activities of patients with acromegaly were evaluated at the time of study. The miR-29c-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p levels were measured using quantitative Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR).

    The expression level of miR-29c-3p was significantly lower in patients with acromegaly compared to the HC group (p<0.001). This downregulation was more pronounced in patients with inadequately controlled acromegaly than in patients with acromegaly controlled with SSA therapy (p=0.016). Univariate logistic regression analysis results showed that down regulation of miR-29c-3p expression increases the risk of developing acromegaly [OR (95% Cl)=1.605 (1.142-2.257), p=0.006]. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p expression levels (p=0.375 and p=0.649, respectively).

Another aim is to investigate whether there is a difference in the levels of these miRNAs in patients with inadequate control and controlled acromegaly with somatostatin analog (SSA) therapy. These miRNAs targeting the IGF-1 gene were determined by in silico estimation. The study included 30 healthy controls (HC) and 20 patients with acromegaly. Anterior pituitary functions and disease activities of patients with acromegaly were evaluated at the time of study. The miR-29c-3p, miR-31-5p and miR-18a-5p levels were measured using quantitative Real-Time PCR (RT-qPCR). The expression level of miR-29c-3p was significantly lower in patients with acromegaly compared to the HC group (p<0.001). This downregulation was more pronounced in patients with inadequately controlled acromegaly than in patients with acromegaly controlled with SSA therapy (p=0.016). Univariate logistic regression analysis results showed that down regulation of miR-29c-3p expression increases the risk of developing acromegaly [OR (95% Cl)=1.605 (1.142-2.257), p=0.006]. Justice, equality and liberty should be incorporated into diabetes-care systems, and fraternity encouraged. In traditional clinical research on human participants, where two treatments or interventions are compared, clinical equipoise is an important ethical consideration. This refers to the genuine uncertainty among professional peers on whether one of the interventions is better than the other. This uncertainty is in the biomedical efficacy of the intervention. Unless such equipoise exists, clinical research is said to be unethical from the benefit-risk balance and justice perspectives. In health policy and systems research, the question of clinical equipoise is often not relevant. This article will describe the condition of clinical equipoise in health policy and systems research, its applications and challenges.

    To evaluate the feasibility and clinical value of fetal left modified myocardial performance index (Mod-MPI) in assessment and management of prenatal twin anemia polycythemia sequence (TAPS).

    We retrospectively reviewed fetuses with TAPS diagnosed prenatally between 2015 and 2019 at Asan Medical Center. Doppler ultrasound evaluation including the peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and fetal echocardiography including left Mod-MPI were evaluated and followed up after antenatal management.

    Among 10 cases of fetal twin pregnancies with prenatal TAPS, six were spontaneous and four were post-laser TAPS. Left Mod-MPI was abnormal in one or both twins of nine cases (90%) including all post-laser TAPS (
     = 4) and 83.3% of spontaneous TAPS (
     = 5). Three recipients, one donor and three former recipients/new donors had elevated left Mod-MPI values, and one donor, one recipient, two former donors/new recipients had decreased values. Antenatal intervention was performed in eight casefor assessment of compromised fetal cardiac function in cases with prenatal TAPS.     Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease caused by the imbalance between the activity of angiotensin II and angiotensin-(1-7). Their balance should be controlled by angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which degrades angiotensin II into angiotensin-(1-7). Previously, autoantibodies to ACE2 (anti-ACE2) were identified in patients with vasculopathy due to different connective tissue diseases, including SSc, but their frequency in SSc was not further analyzed. The aim of the research was to investigate the prevalence and potential role of those anti-ACE2 antibodies in SSc patients.

    There were enrolled 27 patients with SSc and 23 healthy donors. ELISA assay determined the presence of anti-ACE2 autoantibodies in serum samples. The results were compared to plasma measurements of angiotensin-(1-7) level
