    The present study was a randomized double-blind controlled clinical trial. A checklist questionnaire was completed by 120, 18 to 35-year-old, college students. And then, 84 eligible women (20 to 35 years old) were enrolled in the trial; they were randomly assigned to two groups of intervention (EA) and control (placebo), with 42 participants in each group. Participants in the intervention group received 450 mg capsules of EA per day (three times a day) from the 21st day of their menstrual cycle until the 3rd day of their next cycle for two consecutive cycles. The severity of PMS was measured and ranked using the premenstrual symptoms screening tool (PSST). The generalized estimating equation was used to compare the total score of the severity of PMS between the two groups.

    Sixty-nine women with regular menstrual cycles suffering from PMS completed the study. The mean scores of the symptoms in the EA group were 35.3 and 16.1 (P ≤ 0.001) at baseline and after 2months, respectively, while the mean scores of the symptoms in the placebo group were 31.0 and 28.3 (P = 0.09) at baseline and after 2months, respectively. The evaluation of the first and the second follow-ups in the intervention group showed that, after being adjusted for age and body mass index (P ≤0.001), the mean scores of the premenstrual syndrome, using GEE analysis, have decreased to 6.2 and 11.6, respectively.

    Based on the results, in comparison with the placebo group, EA was found to be more effective in improving the symptoms of PMS, and is highly recommended for treatment of this syndrome.

    The recent Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has placed severe stress on healthcare systems worldwide, which is amplified by the critical shortage of COVID-19 tests.

    In this study, we propose to generate a more accurate diagnosis model of COVID-19 based on patient symptoms and routine test results by applying machine learning to reanalyzing COVID-19 data from 151 published studies. We aim to investigate correlations between clinical variables, cluster COVID-19 patients into subtypes, and generate a computational classification model for discriminating between COVID-19 patients and influenza patients based on clinical variables alone.

    We discovered several novel associations between clinical variables, including correlations between being male and having higher levels of serum lymphocytes and neutrophils. We found that COVID-19 patients could be clustered into subtypes based on serum levels of immune cells, gender, and reported symptoms. Finally, we trained an XGBoost model to achieve a sensitivity of 92.5% and a specificity of 97.9% in discriminating COVID-19 patients from influenza patients.

The settings were geriatrics wards, outpatient clinics, primary care, and nursing homes. Suitability was evaluated by considering the feasibility (patients with the test fully completed), administration time (time spent for administering the test), and interscale agreement (Cohen kappa index among instruments to detect frailty).

    The prevalence of frailty varied across settings and adopted tests. The scales with the mean highest feasibility were the FRAIL scale (99.4%), SHARE-FI (98.3%), and GFST (95.0%). The mean shortest administration times were obtained with CFS (24seconds), GFST (72seconds), and FRAIL scale (90seconds). The interscale agreement between most of the tests was fair. CFS followed by FTS-5 agreed at least moderately with a greater number of scales overall and in almost all settings.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further magnified this problem by the possibility of viral transmission via fomites. To protect themselves, staff and providers were donning personal protective equipment to review paper records, which was time-consuming and wasteful. We describe an innovative process developed by a team of hospital leadership, members of a local collaborative of skilled nursing facilities, and leadership of this collaborative group, to address this problem. Many possible solutions were suggested and reviewed. We describe the reasons for selecting our final document transfer process and how it was implemented. The critical success factors are also delineated. Other health systems and collaborative groups of skilled nursing facilities may benefit from implementing similar processes.

Next, using depth slicing, locating and retargeting, the parallax of the integral optical display is significantly enhanced. Additionally, the displayed depth information can be presented in a uniform compression with the same proportion as the real scene even without the prior knowledge of the actual object distance.   • Head and neck synovial sarcoma is rare. We report the case of a 71-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia, odynophagia, shortness of breath on exertion and hoarseness of voice. Nasendoscopy revealed a smooth, non-fungating, non-ulcerative mass arising from the left lateral pharyngeal wall. CT showed a well-defined, heterogenous enhancing lesion arising from the left pyriform fossa. Initial biopsy taken was inconclusive and patient underwent a transcervical complete excision of the tumour, where histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of monophasic synovial sarcoma of the left pyriform fossa. This patient also received adjuvant radiotherapy postoperatively and remained disease free 1 year after completion of treatment.Heavy chain disease (HCD) is a rare B-cell proliferative neoplasm that is characterised by the production of truncated monoclonal immunoglobulin heavy chains without light chains. Gamma HCD is a subgroup of HCD. A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with dyspnoea and lower leg oedema. Based on the results of heart catheterisation, he was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Laboratory tests revealed an elevated level of IgG, and serum immunoelectrophoresis showed that IgG was a monoclonal gamma heavy chain without light chains. Finally, he was diagnosed with gamma HCD complicated by pulmonary hypertension. Bortezomib and dexamethasone therapy was initiated, but became refractory within 8 months. It is quite uncommon to find isolated lateral meniscus tears in this population, but the learning point demonstrates it is important to arthroscopically examine the whole knee, even while performing synovial biopsies as there may be unexpected findings.Nodular fasciitis is a benign, self-limiting proliferative disorder of fibroblast of uncertain aetiology, occurs frequently in the forearm. We present the case of a 38-year-old man with features of unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Decompression of the median nerve performed subsequently along with excision of the lesion in a piecemeal fashion. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings were consistent with nodular fasciitis. There were complete resolution of symptoms and no sign of recurrence at the end of 1 year after surgery.Brown-Séquard syndrome (BSS) presents as an ipsilateral loss of motor function, proprioception and vibratory sensation accompanied by contralateral pain and temperature loss two to three levels below the level of the injury. BSS remains prevalent in areas with high trauma burden, where assaults with sharp weapons are common. We present the case of a man aged 38 years who sustained a stab injury to the left ****. BSS was diagnosed. He underwent removal of the weapon in the operating room and had an uneventful recovery to near baseline functional level after a course of rehabilitation. A planned breast reduction surgery was deemed adequate postlumpectomy therapy to prevent cancer recurrence, negating the need for chemotherapy or radiation therapy. To our knowledge, this is the first case in which cosmetic breast reduction surgery will be used as postlumpectomy cancer recurrence risk mitigation for primary leiomyosarcoma of the breast. Patients with this malignancy have a relatively poor prognosis compared with other breast cancer types, with a 5-year disease-free survival of 33%-52%.     Substance use disorder (SUD) is characterized by compulsive use of addictive substances with considerable impact on both the medical system and society as a whole. The craving of substances leads to relapse in the majority of patients within one year of traditional treatments. In recent decades, neuromodulation approaches have emerged as potential novel treatments of SUD, but the ideal neural target remains contentious.

    In this review, we discuss new insights on the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as a neuromodulation target for SUD.

    First, we illustrate that the ACC serves as a central "hub" in addiction-related neural networks of cognitive functions, including, but not limited to, decision-making, cognitive inhibition, emotion, and motivation. Then, we summarize the literature targeting the ACC to treat SUDs via available neuromodulation approaches. Finally, we propose potential directions to improve the effect of stimulating the ACC in SUD treatment. We emphasize that the ACC can be divided into at least four sub-regions, which have distinctive functions and connections. Studies focusing on these sub-regions may help to develop more precise and effective ACC stimulation according to patients' symptom profiles and cognitive deficits.

The redox reaction in the colloidal MXNS solution under the effect of a constant applied potential generates an electric field, which drives the nanoparticles toward a specific electrode interface such that they are cathodically electroplated. A task-specific ionic liquid, that is, 4-amino-1-(4-formyl-benzyl) pyridinium bromide (AFBPB), is exploited as a multiplex host arena for the substantial immobilization of MXNSs and covalent binding of antibodies. A miniaturized, single-masked gold dual interdigitated microelectrode (DIDμE) is microfabricated and presented by investigating the benefit of AFBPB coated on MXNSs. The resulting MXNSs-AFBPB-film-modified DIDμE biosensor exhibited a 7× higher redox current than bare electrodes owing to the uniform deposition.     The development of an optimal screening method is required to improve the prognosis of pancreatico-biliary (PB) cancers. A recently developed microfluidic device achieved a high diagnostic yield by detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood of cancer patients. We conducted this study to investigate the clinical utility of measuring CTCs in peripheral venous blood to diagnose PB cancer.

    Sixty-three subjects were enrolled in this study (29 with pancreatic cancer [PC], 19 with biliary cancer [**] and 16 non-tumor controls). Using a microfluidic chip device and image analyzer, circulating blood cells were selected based on their size and immunocytochemistry staining pattern. The primary endpoint was the diagnostic accuracy of CTCs with regard to distinguishing between PB cancer patients and controls. We divided all cases into the training set (n=32) and validation set (n=31). The diagnostic accuracy of CTCs, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) were analyzed.

    In both the training set and validation set, CTCs showed the highest diagnostic accuracy (training set CTCs 90.6%, CA19-9 90.6%, CEA 65.6%, validation set CTCs 87.5%, CA19-9 78.1%, CEA 81.2). First, we illustrate that the ACC serves as a central "hub" in addiction-related neural networks of cognitive functions, including, but not limited to, decision-making, cognitive inhibition, emotion, and motivation. Then, we summarize the literature targeting the ACC to treat SUDs via available neuromodulation approaches. Finally, we propose potential directions to improve the effect of stimulating the ACC in SUD treatment. We emphasize that the ACC can be divided into at least four sub-regions, which have distinctive functions and connections. The redox reaction in the colloidal MXNS solution under the effect of a constant applied potential generates an electric field, which drives the nanoparticles toward a specific electrode interface such that they are cathodically electroplated. A task-specific ionic liquid, that is, 4-amino-1-(4-formyl-benzyl) pyridinium bromide (AFBPB), is exploited as a multiplex host arena for the substantial immobilization of MXNSs and covalent binding of antibodies. A miniaturized, single-masked gold dual interdigitated microelectrode (DIDμE) is microfabricated and presented by investigating the benefit of AFBPB coated on MXNSs. The resulting MXNSs-AFBPB-film-modified DIDμE biosensor exhibited a 7× higher redox current than bare electrodes owing to the uniform deposition. A recently developed microfluidic device achieved a high diagnostic yield by detecting circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood of cancer patients. We conducted this study to investigate the clinical utility of measuring CTCs in peripheral venous blood to diagnose PB cancer. Sixty-three subjects were enrolled in this study (29 with pancreatic cancer [PC], 19 with biliary cancer [BC] and 16 non-tumor controls). Using a microfluidic chip device and image analyzer, circulating blood cells were selected based on their size and immunocytochemistry staining pattern. The primary endpoint was the diagnostic accuracy of CTCs with regard to distinguishing between PB cancer patients and controls. We divided all cases into the training set (n=32) and validation set (n=31). The diagnostic accuracy of CTCs, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) were analyzed.     We aimed to investigate the parameters that have an effect on the length of stay and mortality rates of patients with Fournier's gangrene.

    A retrospective review was performed on 80 patients who presented to the emergency department and underwent emergency debridement with the diagnosis of Fournier's gangrene between 2008 and 2017. The demographic and clinical characteristics, length of stay, Fournier's Gangrene Severity Index score, cystostomy and colostomy requirement, additional treatment for wound healing and the mortality rates of the patients were evaluated.

    Of the 80 patients included in the study, 65 (81.2 %) were male and 15 (18.7 %) female. The most common comorbidity was diabetes mellitus. The mean time between onset of complaints and admission to hospital was 4.6 ± 2.5 days. The efficient separation was achieved within 7 min with a temperature of 45 °C by using a C-18 column as the stationary phase and water/acetonitrile with 0.05% formic acid as the mobile phase. The method was validated for linearity, repeatability, limits of detection, and limits of quantification. The limits of detections of phenolic compounds 1  - 9 were as low as 0.2 µg/mL. The photodiode array detector at 220 and 255 nm wavelengths was recruited for quantification. The key phytochemicals were detected in the range of 0.42 to 2.57 mg/100 mg sample weight in 13 dietary supplements.   • In summer 2019, a full-scale trial was carried out to investigate the effects in drinking water quality when tertiary treated wastewater was discharged into the Llobregat River upstream of the intake of one of the major drinking water treatment plants of Barcelona and its metropolitan area. Two scenarios were investigated, i.e. discharging the reclaimed water with and without chemical disinfection with chlorine. This study investigates the concentration of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) as the specific disinfection conditions employed in this trial may favor its formation. To this aim, both NDMA and NDMA formation potential, were measured. The river contained NDMA at very low concentrations, but the concentration of NDMA precursors was already high. The NDMA concentration was reduced from discharge to the river to drinking water intake probably due to a combined effect of dilution and photolysis. The formation potential was also reduced probably due to dilution and biodegradation. The concentration of NDMA in the drinking water was always low ( less then 7.3 ng/L), although the formation potential was above 10 ng/L in one sample.     Although the need for axillary lymph node dissection (AD) is decreasing in breast cancer patients, it remains necessary in some cases. Axillary reverse mapping (ARM) enables the detection of upper extremity lymphatic drainage that may be spared during selective axillary dissection (SAD) so as to reduce the risk of lymphedema. The ability of the ARM-SAD procedure to reduce the incidence of lymphedema is being tested in an ongoing randomized trial. Crossover between arm drainage and breast drainage is well documented in the axilla, however, and whether the procedure is oncologically safe remains controversial. We aim to assess the axillary failure rate when a few nodes draining the upper arm are being spared by the ARM-SAD.

    We report oncological outcomes, and axillary failure in particular, in the first 100 consecutive axillary node-positive patients treated with ARM-SAD as part of a pilot study and a randomized trial.

    A median of 18 (IQR 14-22) axillary nodes were excised per patient. During the follow-up (median 51 months, IQR 34-91), 11 patients experienced a treatment failure, but only one - treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy - developed overt axillary disease as a first (and isolated) event. The crude rate of axillary failure was 1.36% (95% CI 0.19-9.63) with an estimated 5-year crude cumulative incidence of 1.85% (95% CI 0-5.47%).

    To evaluate the performances of systematic posttreatment pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (PPMRI) in predicting prognosis of patients treated with chemoradiation therapy (CRT) for locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC).

    Multi-institutional data from 216 patients presenting FIGO IB2-IIB cervical cancer for which PPMRI was performed following CRT were retrospectively reviewed. Incomplete response was defined as the identification of persistent lesion on PPMRI. Primary endpoints were patients' 5-year recurrence free (RFS) and overall (OS) survivals. Secondary endpoint was the identification of residual histologic disease on hysterectomy specimens when completion surgery was performed.

    PPMRI identified an incomplete response in 102 (47.2%) cases. A 70% or more reduction in tumor size on PPMRI was identified as the best predictive cut-off for recurrence (37.7% sensitivity and 78.7% specificity) and death (50% sensitivity and 77.9% specificity) with significant impact on those risks (HRa 0.42; 95%CI 0.23-0.77 and HRa 0.18; 95%CI 0.06-0.50, respectively). Completion hysterectomy was performed in 117 (54.4%) cases, with histologic residual disease in 55 (47.4%). PPMRI demonstrated 74.5% sensitivity and 50.8% specificity in predicting residual disease. Although survival of patients with complete response at PPMRI was not impacted by completion hysterectomy, it significantly increased 5-year RFS and OS of those with incomplete response 38.7% vs. 65.3% (p<0.001) and 63% vs. 82.9% (p=0.038), respectively.

A 70% or more reduction in tumor size on PPMRI was identified as the best predictive cut-off for recurrence (37.7% sensitivity and 78.7% specificity) and death (50% sensitivity and 77.9% specificity) with significant impact on those risks (HRa 0.42; 95%CI 0.23-0.77 and HRa 0.18; 95%CI 0.06-0.50, respectively). Completion hysterectomy was performed in 117 (54.4%) cases, with histologic residual disease in 55 (47.4%). PPMRI demonstrated 74.5% sensitivity and 50.8% specificity in predicting residual disease.     Chikungunya (CHIKV) is an arbovirus transmitted mainly by Aedes aegypti females. CHIKV has been highlighted as the pathogen with the greatest impact due to the high morbidity caused by the infection. In 2016, Brazil experienced an outbreak that affected almost 272 000 people. Here, we performed a molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the CHIKV circulating in 2016 in the state of Sergipe, Brazil.

There were dramatic increases overall and for patient subgroups, with a majority of patients (including patients with lower income or with self-reported limited health literacy) messaging by 2015. Although more physicians than nurses and other providers messaged throughout the study, the distribution of health professions using SM changed over time. Given this rapid increase in SM, deeper understanding of optimizing the value of patient and provider engagement, while managing workflow and training challenges, is crucial.

  • Congestion score index (CSI), a semiquantitative evaluation of congestion on chest radiography (CXR), is associated with outcome in patients with heart failure (HF). However, its diagnostic value in patients admitted for acute dyspnea has yet to be evaluated.

    The diagnostic value of CSI for acute HF (AHF; adjudicated from patients' discharge files) was studied in the Pathway of dyspneic patients in Emergency (PARADISE) cohort, including patients aged 18 years or older admitted for acute dyspnea in the emergency department (ED) of the Nancy University Hospital (France) between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2015. CSI (ranging from 0 to 3) was evaluated using a semiquantitative method on CXR in consecutive patients admitted for acute dyspnea in the ED. Results were validated in independent cohorts (N = 224). Of 1,333 patients, mean (standard deviation [SD]) age was 72.0 (18.5) years, 686 (51.5%) were men, and mean (SD) CSI was 1.42 (0.79). Patients with higher CSI had more cardiovascular comorbidities, moy the validation in the independent cohorts.

Next generation sequencing of B cell receptor (BCR) repertoires offers an additional source of sequences that could be tapped if we had a reliable method of selecting those coding for the best antibodies. In this paper we introduce a method that uses evolutionary information from the family of related sequences that share a naive ancestor to predict the affinity of each resulting antibody for its antigen. When combined with information on the identity of the antigen, this method should provide a source of effective new antibodies. We also introduce a method for a related task given an antibody of interest and its inferred ancestral lineage, which branches in the tree are likely to harbor key affinity-increasing mutations? Under all-sky conditions, the OMI retrieval algorithm was found to underestimate the TOCA values with mean bias (MnB), root mean square error (RMSE), and correlation coefficient (r) values ranging from about -3.4% to -1.7%, 2.4% to 4.9%, and 0.73 to 0.90, respectively. When only days with a radiation modification factor greater than or equal to 65% were considered, the MnB, RMSE, and r values between TOCA values derived from ground-based and OMI measurements improved, and they ranged from -2.5% to -1.3%, 1.4% to 3.8%, and 0.8 to 0.91, respectively. A good agreement was found between TOCA values derived from Dobson measurements and those derived from OMI satellite measurements with MnB, RMSE, and r values of about -1.8%, 1.4%, and 0.91, respectively. This was due to the fact that Dobson measurements were taken only when the sky was perceived clear. The underestimation of TOCA values by the OMI retrieval algorithm was found to be due mainly to clouds and aerosols.

  • Recent studies of structural relaxation in Cu-Zr metallic glass materials having a range of compositions and over a wide range of temperatures and in crystalline UO2 under superionic conditions have indicated that the localization model (LM) can predict the structural relaxation time τα of these materials from the intermediate scattering function without any free parameters from the particle mean square displacement ⟨r2⟩ at a caging time on the order of ps, i.e., the "Debye-Waller factor" (DWF). In the present work, we test whether this remarkable relation between the "fast" picosecond dynamics and the rate of structural relaxation τα in these model amorphous and crystalline materials can be extended to the prediction of the local interfacial dynamics of model amorphous and crystalline films. Specifically, we simulate the free-standing amorphous Cu64Zr36 and crystalline Cu films and find that the LM provides an excellent parameter-free prediction for τα of the interfacial region. We also show that the Tammann temperature, defining the initial formation of a mobile interfacial layer, can be estimated precisely for both crystalline and glass-forming solid materials from the condition that the DWFs of the interfacial region and the material interior coincide.In the framework of the Gibbs approach to nucleation thermodynamics, expressions are derived for the nucleation work, nucleus size, surface tension, and Gibbs-Tolman length in homogeneous single-component nucleation at a fixed temperature. These expressions are in terms of the experimentally controlled overpressure of the nucleating phase and are valid for the entire overpressure range, i.e., for nucleus of any size. Analysis of available data for bubble and droplet nucleation in Lennard-Jones fluid shows that the theory describes well the data by means of a single free parameter, the Gibbs-Tolman length of the planar liquid/vapor interface. It is found that this length is about one-tenth of the Lennard-Jones molecular-diameter parameter and that it is positive for the bubble nucleus and negative for the droplet nucleus. Separate full dimensional quantum wavepacket simulations of singlet and triplet manifolds in the approximate linear vibronic model by assuming initial Franck-Condon conditions are carried out to unravel the internal conversion decay dynamics in the respective manifolds. Using nonequilibrium Green's functions, we computed the viscosity and diffusion coefficient experienced by nuclei surrounded by a nonequilibrium "sea" of periodically driven, current-carrying electrons. The effective molecular junction temperature is deduced by balancing the viscosity and diffusion coefficients. Our calculations show the opportunity of achieving in excess of 40% cooling of the molecular junction temperature while maintaining the same average current.We introduce a machine learning method in which energy solutions from the Schrödinger equation are predicted using symmetry adapted atomic orbital features and a graph neural-network architecture. OrbNet is shown to outperform existing methods in terms of learning efficiency and transferability for the prediction of density functional theory results while employing low-cost features that are obtained from semi-empirical electronic structure calculations. For applications to datasets of drug-like molecules, including QM7b-T, QM9, GDB-13-T, DrugBank, and the conformer benchmark dataset of Folmsbee and Hutchison [Int. J. Quantum Chem.     Recent studies of structural relaxation in Cu-Zr metallic glass materials having a range of compositions and over a wide range of temperatures and in crystalline UO2 under superionic conditions have indicated that the localization model (LM) can predict the structural relaxation time τα of these materials from the intermediate scattering function without any free parameters from the particle mean square displacement ⟨r2⟩ at a caging time on the order of ps, i.e., the "Debye-Waller factor" (DWF). In the present work, we test whether this remarkable relation between the "fast" picosecond dynamics and the rate of structural relaxation τα in these model amorphous and crystalline materials can be extended to the prediction of the local interfacial dynamics of model amorphous and crystalline films. Specifically, we simulate the free-standing amorphous Cu64Zr36 and crystalline Cu films and find that the LM provides an excellent parameter-free prediction for τα of the interfacial region. We also show that the Tammann temperature, defining the initial formation of a mobile interfacial layer, can be estimated precisely for both crystalline and glass-forming solid materials from the condition that the DWFs of the interfacial region and the material interior coincide.In the framework of the Gibbs approach to nucleation thermodynamics, expressions are derived for the nucleation work, nucleus size, surface tension, and Gibbs-Tolman length in homogeneous single-component nucleation at a fixed temperature. These expressions are in terms of the experimentally controlled overpressure of the nucleating phase and are valid for the entire overpressure range, i.e., for nucleus of any size. Analysis of available data for bubble and droplet nucleation in Lennard-Jones fluid shows that the theory describes well the data by means of a single free parameter, the Gibbs-Tolman length of the planar liquid/vapor interface. It is found that this length is about one-tenth of the Lennard-Jones molecular-diameter parameter and that it is positive for the bubble nucleus and negative for the droplet nucleus.     The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an educational work groups on the knowledge and perception of 2nd year pharmacist students towards pharmacovigilance in a moroccan faculty of medicine and pharmacy.

    A descriptive study conducted in pharmacology laboratory of the faculty of medicine and pharmacy of Rabat on 2nd year pharmacist students, to assess their knowledge and perception towards PV via questionnaire before and after an educational work groups.

    Among the 122invited students, 108responded to the questionnaire distributed before working group with a participation rate of 88,5%. This rate increased to 95,9% (n=117) after work groups sessions. Pre-work groups, students showed an overall low knowledge, where only 27.7% knew the ADRs reporting sheet. In addition, most students were not well prepared to report ADR in their future practice (n=82, 75.92%). Work groups partially offsetting this deficit, and helped to better explain to the students the reporting system. Resulting in only 28participants maintained their declaration of inability to report ADR in their future practice (25.92%). On the other hand, students showed a favorable perception.

    Self-medication practices are widely practiced globally as major form of self-care for pain management. Unfortunately, with COVID-19 pandemic, prescription only drugs are now increasingly being self-prescribed. Present study was therefore, conducted to generate data on self-medication practice with analgesics using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and acetaminophen, and the antibiotics among nursing students of University College Farasan Campus.

    A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 177 study participants (20±3 years) between December 2019 to February 2020 using questionnaire.     In a context of continuity of quality improvement, we are committed to enhancing the care management and medication management of outpatients in the drug dispensation unit of our pharmacy. An audit was carried out to assess the training needs of pharmacy technicians (PTs).

    All drug dispensations done over a 9-week period by the units PTs were audited. Data collected were PTs' presentation to the patient, duration of drug dispensation, notion of introduction or renewal, the tools used during retrocession, and the explanations given to the patient about her/his treatment. PT perceptions and patient satisfaction were evaluated on a Likert scale from 1 to 5 and on a scale from 1 to 4, respectively.

    One hundred drug dispensation were audited 21 introductions and 79 renewals. Tools were used in 52% of introductions and 11% of renewals. Administration modalities were explained for all introductions but for only 57% of renewals, 47% of adverse events and 9.5% of storage methods. Tolerance was discussed in 34% of drug dispensations and compliance in 19%. The scores of PT perception and patient satisfaction were 4.4/5 and between 3/4 and 3.9/4 depending on the items, respectively.

    Several areas for improvement are highlighted in this survey. PTs' complementary should include communication with outpatients. This approach is an integral part of the ISO 9001 certification obtained in 2019 in our drug dispensation unit.

Poorly designed packaging can lead to drug misuse with serious consequences. We report a potassium double dose medication error concerning an oral solution. It was triggered by a packaging flaw related to the dosage indicated on the box, expressed for both potassium salt and elemental potassium. Standardizing the units used on packaging and for prescriptions, by using millimoles, could be a solution to avoid this type of medication error.α-actinin-2 (α-actn-2) is an F-actin-crosslinking protein, localized in dendritic spines. In vitro studies suggested that it is involved in spinogenesis, morphogenesis, actin organization, cell migration and anchoring of the NR1 subunit of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in dendritic spines. However, little is known regarding its function in vivo. We examined the levels of α-actn-2 expression within the dentate gyrus (DG) during the development of chronic limbic seizures (epileptogenesis) induced by pilocarpine in rats. In this model, plasticity of the DG glutamatergic granule cells including spine loss, spinogenesis, morphogenesis, neo-synaptogenesis, aberrant migration, and alterations of NMDA receptors have been well characterized. We showed that α-actn-2 immunolabeling was reduced in the inner molecular layer at 1-2 weeks post-status epilepticus (SE), when granule cell spinogenesis and morphogenesis occur. This low level persisted at the chronic stage when new functional synapses are established.
