First, the existence and polarity of surface charges were inferred from current-voltage curves recorded when a pore was placed in contact with a LiClO4 concentration gradient. Second, the electro-osmotic transport of uncharged polystyrene particles through the PET pore provided information on the polarity and the magnitude of the pore walls' zeta potential. Our experiments show that the PET pores become effectively positively charged when in contact with LiClO4 solutions in propylene carbonate, even though in aqueous LiClO4, the same pores are negatively charged. Additionally, the electro-osmotic velocity of the particles revealed a significantly higher magnitude of the positive zeta potential of the pores in propylene carbonate compared to the magnitude of the negative zeta potential in water. The presented methods of probing the properties of solid-liquid interfaces are expected to be applicable to a wide variety of solid and liquid systems.A scalable, stochastic algorithm evaluating the fourth-order many-body perturbation (MP4) correction to energy is proposed. Three hundred Goldstone diagrams representing the MP4 correction are computer generated and then converted into algebraic formulas expressed in terms of Green's functions in real space and imaginary time. Among all predicted structures, the simulated x-ray diffraction pattern of K3Cu2 perfectly matches a K-Cu compound synthesized in 2004. Further simulations indicate that the K-Cu compounds exhibit diverse structural features with novel forms of Cu aggregations, including Cu dimers, linear and zigzag Cu chains, and Cu-centered polyhedrons. Analysis of the electronic structure reveals that Cu atoms behave as anions to accept electrons from K atoms through fully filling 4s orbitals and partially extending 4p orbitals. Covalent Cu-Cu interaction is found in these compounds, which is associated with the sp hybridizations.

  • Electrical breakdown is a critical problem in electronics. In molecular electronics, it becomes more problematic because ultrathin molecular monolayers have delicate and defective structures and exhibit intrinsically low breakdown voltages, which limit device performances. Here, we show that interstitially mixed self-assembled monolayers (imSAMs) remarkably enhance electrical stability of molecular-scale electronic devices without deteriorating function and reliability. The SAM of the sterically bulky matrix (SC11BIPY rectifier) molecule is diluted with a skinny reinforcement (SCn) molecule via the new approach, so-called repeated surface exchange of molecules (ReSEM). Combined experiments and simulations reveal that the ReSEM yields imSAMs wherein interstices between the matrix molecules are filled with the reinforcement molecules and leads to significantly enhanced breakdown voltage inaccessible by traditional pure or mixed SAMs. Thanks to this, bias-driven disappearance and inversion of rectification is unprecedentedly observed. Our work may help to overcome the shortcoming of SAM's instability and expand the functionalities.Defect engineering leads to an effective manipulation of the physical and chemical properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Taking the common missing linker defect as an example, the defective MOF generally possesses larger pores and a greater surface area/volume ratio, both of which favor an increased amount of adsorption. When it comes to the self-diffusion of adsorbates in MOFs, however, the missing linker is a double-edged sword the unsaturated metal sites, due to missing linkers, could interact more strongly with adsorbates and result in a slower self-diffusion. Therefore, it is of fundamental importance to evaluate the two competing factors and reveal which one is dominating, a faster self-diffusion due to larger volume or a slower self-diffusion owing to strong interactions at unsaturated sites. In this work, via Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the behavior of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in the Zr-based UiO-66 MOFs, with a specific focus on the missing linker effects. The results reveal that unsaturated Zr sites bind strongly with IPA molecules, which in return would significantly reduce the self-diffusion coefficient of IPA. Besides this, for the same level of missing linkers, the location of defective sites also makes a difference. We expect such a theoretical study will provide an in-depth understanding of self-diffusion under confinement, inspire better defect engineering strategics, and promote MOF based materials toward challenging real-life applications.The exhaustive exploration of the potential energy surfaces of CE2M2 (E = Si-Pb; M = Li and Na) revealed seven global minima containing a planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC). The design, based on a π-localization strategy, resulted in a ptC with two double bonds forming a linear or a **** allene-type E═C═E motif. The magnetic response of the **** E═C═E fragments support a σ-aromaticity. The bonding analysis indicated that the ptCs form C-E covalent bonds and C-M electrostatic interactions.This study reveals a new method for the preparation of 1,4-oxazinone derivatives by Staudinger reductive cyclization of functionalized vinyl azide precursors. The resulting oxazinone derivatives prepared in this manner were intercepted with terminal alkyne substrates through an intermolecular cycloaddition/cycloreversion sequence to afford polysubstituted pyridine products. Since the interactions of [Emmim]TFSI, [Emmim]+, and TFSI- with the Au(111) surface are stronger than those of molecules (or ions) in the [Emim]TFSI system, the linear arrangement of [Emmim]TFSI and the worm-like pattern of the [Emim]TFSI system can be found near the Au(111) surface. Meanwhile, cations are all parallel to the electrode in the [Emmim]TFSI/Au(111) system and tilted toward the surface in the [Emim]TFSI/Au(111) system. TFSI- presents trans and cis conformations in [Emim]TFSI and [Emmim]TFSI systems adjacent to Au(111), respectively. In cellular mechanism studies, compound 17 strongly inhibited FLT3-mediated signaling pathways and induced apoptosis by arresting the cell cycle in the sub-G1 phase. In in vivo studies, compound 17 demonstrated a good bioavailability (73.6%) and significantly suppressed tumor growth in MV4-11 (10 mg/kg, TGI 93.4%) and MOLM-13 (20 mg/kg, TGI 98.0%) xenograft models without exhibiting obvious toxicity. These results suggested that compound 17 may be a promising drug candidate for treating FLT3-ITD-positive AML.

  • We found proportions of between 7% and 20% of respondents belonging to the inconsistent classes. To further substantiate and validate the interpretation of the proposed model, we related class membership to theoretically relevant respondent characteristics such as reading achievement, cognitive skills, or conscientiousness. Further, we undertook an initial exploration of the overlap in inconsistent respondents' class membership across time and across scales within a survey.     The present study implements an automatic method of assessing arousal in vocal data as well as dynamic system models to explore intrapersonal and interpersonal affect dynamics within psychotherapy and to determine whether these dynamics are associated with treatment outcomes.

    The data of 21,133 mean vocal arousal observations were extracted from 279 therapy sessions in a sample of 30 clients treated by 24 therapists. Before and after each session, clients self-reported their well-being level, using the Outcome Rating Scale.

    Studies have found that psychological treatments produce positive clinical outcomes for many problems experienced by youth. However, there is limited research on whether therapist adherence and competence in delivering these treatments are related to differential clinical outcomes.

    We examined the relationship of therapist adherence and competence to clinical outcomes in a sample of 51 youth aged 7-14 years (M age = 10.36, SD = 1.90; 86.3% white; 60.8% male) treated for anxiety disorders with a manualized individual cognitive-behavioral therapy. Adherence and competence were measured via coding of recorded treatment session content and outcomes were measured by caregiver and youth report across multiple timepoints. We used two-level mixed-effects regression models to test the degree to which adherence and competence predicted differential youth clinical outcomes.

Observed clinical parameters were converted to Tokuhashi, Tomita, and Katagiri scales. For statistical analysis, software environment R 3.4.1 was used. Assessment of prognostic accuracy was performed using ROC analysis. The Tokuhashi scale showed AUC 0.605 (95% CI 0.586-0.616), Tomita scale showed AUC 0.708 (95% CI 0.573-0.842), Katagiri scale showed AUC 0.650 (95% CI 0.508-0.792). The best results for survival rate predicting after surgical treatment for metastatic spinal lesions were shown the Tomita scale.

"In situ preparation" (ISP) technique enables the function of the affected limb to be maintained by preserving the tissue as **** as possible. The technique is based on evaluation of the margin of resection of important tissues near the tumor during surgery. Postoperative fractures are known to frequently occur, however, in cases where bones were preserved and periosteum has been resected by the ISP. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman who required treatment for soft-tissue sarcoma close to the femur. During surgery, femoral periosteum was included in the tumor side and the femur was preserved by the ISP. We covered the femur using a vascularized latissimus dorsi free flap instead of periosteum. The flap survived completely, and 5 years after surgery, there has been no recurrence or postoperative complications and the lower limb is functional. ACC of the external auditory canal (EAC) is exceedingly rare, and its invasion into the ear lobe is even more unusual. In this report, we present a case of ACC that presented as a mass on the surface of the ear lobe in a 28-year-old woman and was initially diagnosed as infected atheroma. For wide resection of the tumor, half of the entire auricula was resected and superficial parotidectomy was performed. After confirming no tumor cells on the surface of the facial nerve, the defect was reconstructed by the combination of platysma muscle flap to prevent Frey syndrome and free forearm flap for the ear lobe form. There was no recurrence or metastasis of the tumor, and Frey syndrome did not occur at 2 years and 8 months after surgery. The patient was satisfied with the result, oncologically and cosmetically. Even in young patients, comprehensive treatments (including diagnosis, resection, and reconstruction) are important in painful ear lobe masses.

"In situ preparation" (ISP) technique enables the function of the affected limb to be maintained by preserving the tissue as much as possible. The technique is based on evaluation of the margin of resection of important tissues near the tumor during surgery. Postoperative fractures are known to frequently occur, however, in cases where bones were preserved and periosteum has been resected by the ISP. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman who required treatment for soft-tissue sarcoma close to the femur. During surgery, femoral periosteum was included in the tumor side and the femur was preserved by the ISP. We covered the femur using a vascularized latissimus dorsi free flap instead of periosteum. The flap survived completely, and 5 years after surgery, there has been no recurrence or postoperative complications and the lower limb is functional. This is the first reported case of successful combined use of the bone ISP and the vascularized latissimus dorsi free flap to preserve the function of the limb affected by femoral sarcoma suspected of bone infiltration.Several oncoplastic techniques have been proposed for subareolar breast cancer, some of which may require contralateral operation for symmetry, or more than one operation for delayed reconstruction of the nipple-areola complex (NAC). We herein developed a simple and effective oncoplastic approach following central quadrantectomy, aiming to achieve the following (1) preservation of breast shape and contour for patients who are not accepting of a notably smaller breast or bilateral operation; (2) single procedure with advantages of single anesthetic and the ability to reconstruct a breast that has not yet been affected by radiation; (3) no autologous grafts with disadvantage of an extra donor site; (4) creation of natural neo-NAC with only incision within the region of the areola complex; and (5) maintaining long-term nipple projection. A cohort study was performed, including 376 women and consisting of 3 different groups of patients; 143 SBI patients (group 1), 94 age- and sex-matched HC patients (group 2), and 139 women with SBI and health issues who registered themselves at a Dutch foundation for women with illness due to SBI (group 3). All patients filled in the Cognitive Failure Questionnaire (CFQ). The American College of Rheumatology Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria (2010) were used to score other symptoms. Completed CFQ data from 222 patients were available for analysis n = 79 for group 1, n = 62 for group 2, and n = 81 for group 3.     We systemically reviewed the literature to assess how long-term testosterone suppressing gender-affirming hormone therapy influenced lean body mass (LBM), muscular area, muscular strength and haemoglobin (Hgb)/haematocrit (HCT).

    Systematic review.

    Four databases (BioMed Central, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science) were searched in April 2020 for papers from 1999 to 2020.

    Eligible studies were those that measured at least one of the variables of interest, included transwomen and were written in English.

    Twenty-four studies were identified and reviewed. Transwomen experienced significant decreases in all parameters measured, with different time courses noted. After 4 months of hormone therapy, transwomen have Hgb/HCT levels equivalent to those of cisgender women. After 12 months of hormone therapy, significant decreases in measures of strength, LBM and muscle area are observed. The effects of longer duration therapy (36 months) in eliciting further decrements in these measures are unclear due to paucity of data. Notwithstanding, values for strength, LBM and muscle area in transwomen remain above those of cisgender women, even after 36 months of hormone therapy.

  • Objective To compare the clinical effectiveness and cost benefit of different frequencies of scale and polish (S&P) treatments in combination with different types of oral hygiene advice (OHA).Design Multi-centre, multi-level cluster randomised factorial open trial with blinded outcome evaluation. UK dental practices were cluster randomised to deliver OHA as usual or personalised. Endodontic treatment was undertaken due to exposure of the pulp in a complicated crown-root fracture of the maxillary right central incisor. Extrusion of the fractured fragment was performed to expose the fracture margin under the alveolar bone. Modified crown-lengthening surgery was used to reconstruct the biologic width. The traumatised tooth was restored with a glass fibre post and resin core, which fit the biological requirements. Finally, an all-ceramic crown fulfilled biomimetic aesthetics. Here we use multivariate genetic models to test the hypothesis that the co-association of traits representing hyperuricemia and its comorbidities is genetically based. Using Bayesian whole-genome regression models, we estimated the genetic marker-based variance and the covariance between serum urate, serum creatinine, systolic blood pressure (SBP), blood glucose and body mass index (BMI) from two independent family-based studies The Framingham Heart Study-FHS and the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network study-HyperGEN. The main genetic findings that replicated in both FHS and HyperGEN, were (1) creatinine was genetically correlated only with urate and (2) BMI was genetically correlated with urate, SBP, and glucose. The environmental covariance among the traits was generally highest for trait pairs involving BMI. The genetic overlap of traits representing the comorbidities of hyperuricemia and gout appears to cluster in two separate axes of genetic covariance. Because creatinine is genetically correlated with urate but not with metabolic traits, this suggests there is one genetic module of shared loci associated with hyperuricemia and chronic kidney disease. Another module of shared loci may account for the association of hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome. This study provides a clear quantitative genetic basis for the clustering of comorbidities with hyperuricemia.To elucidate whether Bronze Age population dispersals from the Eurasian Steppe to South Asia contributed to the gene pool of Indo-Iranian-speaking groups, we analyzed 19,568 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from northern Pakistani and surrounding populations, including 213 newly generated mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from Iranian and Dardic groups, both speakers from the ancient Indo-Iranian branch in northern Pakistan. Our results showed that 23% of mtDNA lineages with west Eurasian origin arose in situ in northern Pakistan since ~5000 years ago (kya), a time depth very close to the documented Indo-European dispersals into South Asia during the Bronze Age. Together with ancient mitogenomes from western Eurasia since the Neolithic, we identified five haplogroups (~8.4% of maternal gene pool) with roots in the Steppe region and subbranches arising (age ~5-2 kya old) in northern Pakistan as genetic legacies of Indo-Iranian speakers. Some of these haplogroups, such as W3a1b that have been found in the ancient samples from the late Bronze Age to the Iron Age period individuals of Swat Valley northern Pakistan, even have sub-lineages (age ~4 kya old) in the southern subcontinent, consistent with the southward spread of Indo-Iranian languages.

The traumatised tooth was restored with a glass fibre post and resin core, which fit the biological requirements. Finally, an all-ceramic crown fulfilled biomimetic aesthetics. Here we use multivariate genetic models to test the hypothesis that the co-association of traits representing hyperuricemia and its comorbidities is genetically based. Using Bayesian whole-genome regression models, we estimated the genetic marker-based variance and the covariance between serum urate, serum creatinine, systolic blood pressure (SBP), blood glucose and body mass index (BMI) from two independent family-based studies The Framingham Heart Study-FHS and the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network study-HyperGEN. The main genetic findings that replicated in both FHS and HyperGEN, were (1) creatinine was genetically correlated only with urate and (2) BMI was genetically correlated with urate, SBP, and glucose. The environmental covariance among the traits was generally highest for trait pairs involving BMI. The genetic overlap of traits representing the comorbidities of hyperuricemia and gout appears to cluster in two separate axes of genetic covariance. Because creatinine is genetically correlated with urate but not with metabolic traits, this suggests there is one genetic module of shared loci associated with hyperuricemia and chronic kidney disease. Another module of shared loci may account for the association of hyperuricemia and metabolic syndrome. This study provides a clear quantitative genetic basis for the clustering of comorbidities with hyperuricemia.To elucidate whether Bronze Age population dispersals from the Eurasian Steppe to South Asia contributed to the gene pool of Indo-Iranian-speaking groups, we analyzed 19,568 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from northern Pakistani and surrounding populations, including 213 newly generated mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from Iranian and Dardic groups, both speakers from the ancient Indo-Iranian branch in northern Pakistan. Our results showed that 23% of mtDNA lineages with west Eurasian origin arose in situ in northern Pakistan since ~5000 years ago (kya), a time depth very close to the documented Indo-European dispersals into South Asia during the Bronze Age. Together with ancient mitogenomes from western Eurasia since the Neolithic, we identified five haplogroups (~8.4% of maternal gene pool) with roots in the Steppe region and subbranches arising (age ~5-2 kya old) in northern Pakistan as genetic legacies of Indo-Iranian speakers. Some of these haplogroups, such as W3a1b that have been found in the ancient samples from the late Bronze Age to the Iron Age period individuals of Swat Valley northern Pakistan, even have sub-lineages (age ~4 kya old) in the southern subcontinent, consistent with the southward spread of Indo-Iranian languages.

Various components of these students' metacognition had mediating effects on different literacy difficulties. Moreover, teachers at the university level are encouraged to consider students' test anxiety and metacognition when preparing their teaching materials.
    In India, more than two-thirds of the total health expenditure is incurred through out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) by households. Morbidity events thus impose excessive financial risk on households. The Sustainable Development Goals Target 3.8 specifies financial risk protection for achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in developing countries. This study aimed to estimate the impact of OOPE on catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) and impoverishment effects by types of morbidity in India.

    Data came from the 75th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS) on the theme 'Social consumption in India Health', which was conducted during the period from July 2017 to June 2018. For the present study, 56,722 households for hospitalisation, 29,580 households for outpatient department (OPD) care and 6285 households for both (OPD care and hospitalisation) were analysed. Indices, namely health care burden, CHE, poverty head count ratio and poverty gap ratio using standard definitions were analysed.

    Dietary intake is a primary source of cadmium (Cd) exposure in the non-smoking population. Plant foods containing metal-binding plant compounds such as polyphenols, phytates, and phytochelatins may reduce Cd bioavailability and result in lower Cd body burden. In this study, we investigated the association between plant food intake and urinary creatinine-adjusted Cd (uCd), a well-established marker of Cd body burden.

    Participants were from a cross-sectional sample of 1901 adults in the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort. Dietary intake was assessed with a food frequency questionnaire. We created a 12-point plant food score (PFS) based on reported intake across seven categories (fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts/seeds, whole grains, tea, and wine). Higher scores indicated higher consumption and diversity of plant food intake. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the association between PFS and uCd. Due to the influence of age and smoking on Cd status, stratified analyses were conducted.

    Mean PFS was 5.4 (SD 2.2) and mean uCd was 0.53µg/g creatinine (SD 0.39). In adjusted models, PFS was not associated with uCd (p > 0.05). In stratified analyses, PFS was inversely associated with uCd (p = 0.047) with a 1-point higher PFS associated with 0.018µg/g lower uCd among middle-aged (45-59) adults. No significant association was observed between PFS and uCd in older (≥ 60) adults. The association of PFS and uCd did not differ by smoking status.

    A total of n = 9 patients (9 implants) were available for the analysis. Each subject had received lateral ridge augmentation using a size-adapted rigidly fixed CXBB and contour augmentation at single-tooth gaps. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of MOX as a treatment against parasites in a range of mammalian species. An electronic literature search was performed for publications to the 1st September 2020. A total of 205 papers were retrieved and screened against all required criteria; hence, 35 were papers were reviewed in this study. The level of evidence and methodological quality was analysed, where a total of 13 publications were categorised as a 'randomised control trial', seven were categorised as a 'non-randomised control trial' and 15 as an 'experimental control trial'. The overall methodological quality of the publications was considered low, low to moderate, moderate, moderate to high and high in ten, four, twelve, five and a further four, respectively. We assessed the treatment and possible toxicity of MOX in 13 mammalian species, six investigations reported adverse effects to MOX in a small percentage of individuals. The authors reported observed reactions that were typically mild symptoms that did not require additional therapies, and/or resolved themselves. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy of MOX treatment in a larger number of species, particularly in wildlife.

The entire sequence was divided into five peptide segments, each of which was synthesized by the solid-phase method. To improve the solubility of the C-terminal region, O-acyl isopeptide structures were incorporated. After ligation by the thioester method and the introduction of the palmitoyl groups, all the protecting groups were removed and the isopeptide structures were converted into the native peptide bond. Finally, the obtained polypeptide was successfully inserted into bicelles, thus showing the success of the synthesis.
    Invasive fungal disease (IFD) is associated with a high mortality for patients with hematological malignancies undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This study aimed not only to develop a proven/probable IFD risk-scoring model but to identify high-risk populations that would benefit from anti-fungal prophylaxis.

    Data from the China Assessment of Antifungal Therapy in Hematological Diseases (CAESAR) study were retrieved, and all patients (n=1053) undergoing allo-HSCT were randomly divided into the training set (n=685) for model development and the validation set (n=368) for model verification. A weighted risk score for proven or probable IFD was established through multivariate logistic regression analysis.

    The study population had a mean age of 28.95years and the majority underwent myeloablative transplantation in complete remission 1 (53.4%). Five risk factors of IFD were identified, namely neutropenia lasting longer than 14days, corticosteroid use, diabetes, haploidentical donor, and unrelated donor. Based on the risk score for IFD, the patients were categorized into three groups low risk (score 0-4, 1.5%-4.0%), intermediate risk (score 5-8, 9.8%), and high risk (score>8, 24.7%-14.0%). Anti-fungal prophylaxis may provide benefits for patients with intermediate (8.5% vs. 18.5%, P=.0085) or high risk (19.4% vs. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/3bdo.html 30.8%, P=.4651) but not low risk (2.1% vs. 3.8%, P=.6136) of IFD.

    Medical expulsive therapy has been found to be effective for distal ureteric stones; however, which drug is most efficacious in terms of stone expulsion rate (SER) and stone expulsion time (SET) is not known. With this review we aimed to compare the efficacy of various drug treatments for distal ureter stones used as medical expulsive therapy in terms of SER and SET.

    Systematic literature search was conducted to include all the randomised study comparing various drug interventions for lower ureter stones. Standard preferred reporting items for systematic review and meta-analysis for network meta-analysis (PRISMA-NMA) were pursued.

    In this review, 50 randomised studies with 12,382 patients were included. For stone expulsion rate (SER), compared with placebo all the treatment groups were more effective except nifedipine and sildenafil. According to the SUCRA values obtained, naftopidil plus steroid was the highest rank and nifedipine lowest. For stone expulsion time (SET), compared with placebo only tadalafil plus silodosin, nifedipine plus steroid, alfuzosin, silodosin, tadalafil and tamsulosin were more effective. SUCRA values were highest for tadalafil plus silodosin and least for naftopidil plus steroid. From subgroup analysis with individual drugs for SER, SUCRA values were highest for naftopidil followed by silodosin and SET was highest for silodosin and least for naftopidil.

    Recent foodborne disease outbreaks have caused farmers to re-evaluate their practices. In particular, concern that soil amendments could introduce foodborne pathogens onto farms and promote their survival in soils has led farmers to reduce or eliminate the application of animal-based composts. However, organic amendments (such as composts and cover crops) could bolster food safety by increasing soil microbial diversity and activity, which can act as competitors or antagonists and reduce pathogen survival.

    Leveraging a study of a 27-year experiment comparing organic and conventional soil management, we evaluate the impacts of composted poultry litter and cover crops on soil chemistry, bacterial communities and survival of Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes. We found that bacterial community composition strongly affected pathogen survival in soils. Specifically, organic soils managed with cover crops and composts hosted more macronutrients and bacterial communities that were better able to supprsafety risks are mitigated rather than exacerbated.
    Our work suggests that animal-based composts do not promote pathogen survival and may even promote bacterial communities that suppress pathogens. Critically, proper composting techniques are known to reduce pathogen populations in biological soil amendments of animal origin, which can reduce the risks of introducing pathogens to farm fields in soil amendments. Thus, animal-based composts and cover crops may be a safe alternative to conventional fertilizers, both because of the known benefits of composts for soil health and because it may be possible to apply amendments in such a way that food-safety risks are mitigated rather than exacerbated.

Nifedipine as monotherapy is no more effective than control group. Recent foodborne disease outbreaks have caused farmers to re-evaluate their practices. In particular, concern that soil amendments could introduce foodborne pathogens onto farms and promote their survival in soils has led farmers to reduce or eliminate the application of animal-based composts. However, organic amendments (such as composts and cover crops) could bolster food safety by increasing soil microbial diversity and activity, which can act as competitors or antagonists and reduce pathogen survival. Leveraging a study of a 27-year experiment comparing organic and conventional soil management, we evaluate the impacts of composted poultry litter and cover crops on soil chemistry, bacterial communities and survival of Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes. We found that bacterial community composition strongly affected pathogen survival in soils. Specifically, organic soils managed with cover crops and composts hosted more macronutrients and bacterial communities that were better able to supprsafety risks are mitigated rather than exacerbated. Our work suggests that animal-based composts do not promote pathogen survival and may even promote bacterial communities that suppress pathogens. Critically, proper composting techniques are known to reduce pathogen populations in biological soil amendments of animal origin, which can reduce the risks of introducing pathogens to farm fields in soil amendments. Thus, animal-based composts and cover crops may be a safe alternative to conventional fertilizers, both because of the known benefits of composts for soil health and because it may be possible to apply amendments in such a way that food-safety risks are mitigated rather than exacerbated.
