  • The Internet is a widely used resource for patients seeking health information, yet little editing or regulations are imposed on posted material. We sought to assess the quality and accuracy of information presented on shoulder instability on the online video platform YouTube. We hypothesize that YouTube videos concerning shoulder instability will be of little quality, accuracy, and reliability.

    The first 50 YouTube videos resulting from the keyword query 'shoulder instability' were analyzed. The Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria (score range, 0-4) was used to assess video accuracy and reliability, and the Global Quality Score (GQS; score range, 0-5) was used to assess the quality of the video's educational content along with a generated Shoulder-Specific Score (SSS).

    The 50 videos observed collectively had 5,007,486 views, with the mean number of views being 100,149.72±227,218.04. Of all videos observed, 32% were from a medical source and 56% had content relating to pathology information. The mean JAMA score was 2.84±0.74, with the highest scores coming from academic sources. The mean GQS and SSS scores were 2.68±0.84 and 5.30±3.78. The mean GQS score was highest in videos from medical sources (3.3±0.8) and videos about surgical technique/approach (3.2±1.1). Advertisements were negative predictors of the JAMA score (β=-0.324, P =0.014), and academic (β=0.322, P =0.015) and physician sources (β=0.356, P =0.008) were positive predictors.

Univariable and multivariable binary and ordinal logistic regression analyses were applied to assess the factors that were potentially associated with MOI.Results The mean ± sd age at diagnosis was 30.5 ± 9.4 years. Genital ulcer and joint involvement were more common in females (both p less then 0.001), while MOI was more frequent in males (p less then 0.001). Genital ulcer (p less then 0.001) and vascular involvement (p = 0.006) were more common in patients with a younger age at diagnosis, while joint involvement was more common in older patients. A total of 1097 patients (51.8%) had at least one MOI, 322 (15.2%) at least two MOIs, and 48 (2.3%) at least three MOIs. Male gender, smoking history, and absence of genital ulcer were significantly associated with MOI in multivariable binary logistic regression. Multivariable ordinal regression analyses confirmed the association between MOI and male gender and smoking, but not the protective effect of genital ulcers. In both regression analyses, we found no significant effects of age, human leucocyte antigen-B51, skin involvement, or joint involvement on MOI.Conclusion Male gender and positive smoking history have a significant influence on the presence of MOI in patients with BS.I am often asked how our mother inspired my sister Moriah and me to want to become scientists. But the downside is to devote numerous efforts to designing features from the given noisy signals which are also a very time-consuming process. The Deep Learning analysis overcomes the hand-engineered feature extraction and selection problems. In this study, the Database of Emotion analysis using Physiological signals (DEAP) has been visualized to classify High-Arousal- Low-Arousal (HALA), High-Valence-Low-Valence (HVLV), familiarity, Dominance and Liking emotions. The fusion of deep learning models, namely CNN and LSTM-RNN seems to perform better for the analysis of emotions using EEG signals. The average accuracies analyzed by the fused deep learning classification model for DEAP are 97.39%, 97.41%, 98.21%, 97.68%, and 97.89% for HALA, HVLV, familiarity, dominance and liking respectively. The model has been evaluated over the SJTU Emotion EEG Dataset (SEED) dataset too for the detection of positive and negative emotions, which results with an average accuracy of 93.74%.   • In summary, we have shown that application of compost and digestates improves stability of soil aggregates and that this is accompanied by increased soil fertility, decomposition resistance, and abundance of total glomalins and eubacteria. These probably play significant roles in increasing stability of soil aggregates.Environmentally friendly copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) were prepared with a green synthesis route without using hazardous chemicals. Hence, the extracts of mint leaves and orange peels were utilized as reducing agents to synthesize CuO NPs-1 and CuO NPs-2, respectively. The synthesized CuO NPs nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), BET surface area, Ultraviolet-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). Various parameters of batch experiments were considered for the removal of Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II) using the CuO NPs such as nanosorbent dose, contact time, pH, and initial metal concentration. The maximum uptake capacity (qm) of both CuO NPs-1 and CuO NPs-2 followed the order of Pb(II) > Ni(II) > Cd(II). The optimum qm of CuO NPs were 88.80, 54.90, and 15.60 mg g-1 for Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cd(II), respectively and occurred at sorbent dose of 0.33 g L-1 and pH of 6. Furthermore, isotherm and kinetic models were applied to fit the experimental data. Freundlich models (R2 > 0.97) and pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.96) were fitted well to the experimental data and the equilibrium of metal adsorption occurred within 60 min.Malignant mesothelioma is a cancer with a poor survival rate. We made new rat anti-human claudin-15 (CLDN15) monoclonal antibodies that selectively recognize CLDN15, and investigated whether CLDN15 is a good positive marker for malignant pleural mesotheliomas (MPMs) using MPM tissue samples by immunohistochemistry and semi-quantification of the expression level using an immunoreactive score (IRS) method. Of 42 MPM samples, 83% were positive for CLDN15. The positive ratio was equal to or greater than other positive markers for MPMs including calretinin (81%), WT-1 (50%), and D2-40 (81%). In 50 lung adenocarcinoma sections, four cases were positive for CLDN15 and the specificity (92%) was comparable with other markers (90-100%). Notably, CLDN15 was rarely detected in 24 non-mesothelial tumors in the tissue microarray (12/327 cases). School enjoyment was self-reported in two questionnaires completed at age 6. We used multiple imputation to account for missing covariates in this study, giving an imputed sample size of 12,135. Children's school enjoyment at age 6 associated with sex and cognitive ability but not family socioeconomic background. For example, girls were twice as likely to report enjoying school than boys (OR 1.97; 95% CI 1.56, 2.48). CONCLUSIONS These preliminary results indicate that non breathing-related sleep fragmentation is common and related to the pathological markers of CSVD patients.   • Our results indicated an inhibited autophagy in iCC and pCC tumor tissues, whereas active autophagy seemed to occur in dCC, especially in samples displaying low Ki-67 index. Study 2 used CFA to confirm the new structure of the modified version of the questionnaire evident from the Study 1 EFA, and also estimated the reliability and internal validity of the modified version. This resulted in a questionnaire consisting of 20 items and five scales (Moral Duty, Capitulation, Active Resistance, Disengagement and Pleasant Games). Latent structural equation modeling was applied to self-report data from two independent nonclinical female samples (NSample1 = 224, NSample2 = 342). Results underlined the importance of distinguishing between narcissism facets Neurotic (but not agentic or antagonistic) narcissism uniquely predicted drive for thinness and drive for muscularity. Importance of appearance mediated but did not robustly moderate these relations. Hence, neurotic narcissistic women (characterized by hypersensitivity, shame, and a fragile self-esteem) are particularly prone to body image concerns. This vulnerability seems partly driven by how **** importance they ascribe to their appearance. Future work might build on these insights to further unravel the processes linking neurotic narcissism to body image concerns and how these can be targeted in practical interventions.
    Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in patients with diabetes. We aimed to evaluate the association between ankle-brachial index (ABI) and toe-brachial index (TBI) with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

    This cross sectional study included 296 patients with T2DM who met the American Diabetes Association criteria for the assessment of peripheral arterial atherosclerosis. The ABI ≤ 0.9 and TBI ≤ 0.7 were considered as abnormal values. Linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between TBI/ABI and CIMT.

    Right CIMT was significantly greater in the low TBI group (p = 0.03) while, left CIMT did not show a significant difference. Each 0.1-unit decrease in TBI value was independently associated with 0.017 mm increase in the right CIMT (β ± SE; -0.017 ± 0.005, p = 0.002) and with odds of the presence of increased CIMT [odds ratio and 95% confidence interval 1.21 (1.02, 1.44)] after adjustment with all traditional risk factors. There was not any significant association between ABI and increased CIMT.

The gut is a primary site of GBS colonization and a potential port of entry during neonatal infections caused by hypervirulent clonal complex 17 (CC17) strains. Here we studied the interactions between the prototypical CC17 BM110 strain and polarized enterocytes using the Caco-2 cell line. GBS could adhere to and invade these cells through their apical or basolateral surfaces. Basolateral invasion was considerably more efficient than apical invasion and predominated under conditions resulting in weakening of cell-to-cell junctions. Bacterial internalization occurred by a mechanism involving caveolae- and lipid raft-dependent endocytosis and actin re-organization, but not clathrin-dependent endocytosis. In the first steps of Caco-2 invasion, GBS colocalized with the early endocytic marker EEA-1, to later reside in acidic vacuoles. Taken together, these data suggest that CC17 GBS selectively adheres to the lateral surface of enterocytes from which it enters through caveolar lipid rafts using a classical, actin-dependent endocytic pathway. These data may be useful to develop alternative preventive strategies aimed at blocking GBS invasion of the intestinal barrier.

  • Filamentous fungi secrete protein with a very high efficiency, and this potential can be exploited advantageously to produce therapeutic proteins at low costs. A significant barrier to this goal is posed by the fact that fungal N-glycosylation varies substantially from that of humans. Inappropriate N-glycosylation of therapeutics results in reduced product quality, including poor efficacy, decreased serum half-life, and undesirable immune reactions. One solution to this problem is to reprogram the glycosylation pathway of filamentous fungi to decorate proteins with glycans that match, or can be remodeled into, those that are accepted by humans. In yeast, deletion of ALG3 leads to the accumulation of Man5GlcNAc2 glycan structures that can act as a precursor for remodeling. Based on published data sets for proteome and mRNA data in Escherichia coli, and together with mass balance equations describing gene expression, we are able to calculate the number of active molecules (that is, the number of ribosomes that are currently translating nascent and mature mRNA, as well as the number of RNA polymerase molecules on the DNA). This information is a prerequisite for meaningful coarse-grained models. In our approach, the cellular compartment is structured into a cytosolic region and a nucleoid region, and the processes of transcription and translation are assigned accordingly. We have fabricated human transmembrane protein-magnetosome complexes by genetic engineering with embedding the transmembrane proteins of interest, in particular G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), in the magnetosome membrane. The magnetosomes provide a promising platform for high throughput ligand screening towards drug discovery, and this is a critical advantage of the magnetosome display system beyond conventional membrane platforms such as liposomes and lipid nano-discs. However, the human GPCRs expressed on the magnetosomes were not fully functionalized in bacterial membranes the most probably due to the lack of essential phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine (PC) for GPCR functionalization. To overcome this issue, we expressed two types of PC-producing enzymes, phosphatidylcholine synthase (PCS) and phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PMT) in M. magneticum. As a result, generation and incorporation of PC in cell- and magnetosome-membranes were demonstrated. Thus, NE (R848)-based cancer vaccines could prevent tumor recurrence and prolong survival by activating antitumor immunity and reprogramming immunosuppression.
    Filamentous fungi secrete protein with a very high efficiency, and this potential can be exploited advantageously to produce therapeutic proteins at low costs. A significant barrier to this goal is posed by the fact that fungal N-glycosylation varies substantially from that of humans. Inappropriate N-glycosylation of therapeutics results in reduced product quality, including poor efficacy, decreased serum half-life, and undesirable immune reactions. One solution to this problem is to reprogram the glycosylation pathway of filamentous fungi to decorate proteins with glycans that match, or can be remodeled into, those that are accepted by humans. Here, coarse-grained models offer a promising start due to their simple structure and the limited number of kinetic parameters. Based on published data sets for proteome and mRNA data in Escherichia coli, and together with mass balance equations describing gene expression, we are able to calculate the number of active molecules (that is, the number of ribosomes that are currently translating nascent and mature mRNA, as well as the number of RNA polymerase molecules on the DNA). This information is a prerequisite for meaningful coarse-grained models. In our approach, the cellular compartment is structured into a cytosolic region and a nucleoid region, and the processes of transcription and translation are assigned accordingly. The theoretical study reveals a quadratic relationship between the number of active ribosomes and the growth rate μ. While the overall available number of ribosomes follows the linear "bacterial growth law", the approach allows us to determine the growth limit for the chosen experimental environment (minimal medium, only one C source). The magnetosomes provide a promising platform for high throughput ligand screening towards drug discovery, and this is a critical advantage of the magnetosome display system beyond conventional membrane platforms such as liposomes and lipid nano-discs. However, the human GPCRs expressed on the magnetosomes were not fully functionalized in bacterial membranes the most probably due to the lack of essential phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine (PC) for GPCR functionalization. To overcome this issue, we expressed two types of PC-producing enzymes, phosphatidylcholine synthase (PCS) and phosphatidylethanolamine N-methyltransferase (PMT) in M. magneticum. As a result, generation and incorporation of PC in cell- and magnetosome-membranes were demonstrated.   • Research has demonstrated that induced mental fatigue impairs soccer-specific technical, tactical and physical performance in soccer players. The findings are limited by the lack of elite players and low ecological validity of the tasks used to induce mental fatigue, which do not resemble the cognitive demands of soccer. The current study collected survey data from English academy soccer players (n = 256; age groups - U14 - U23), with questions comprising of five themes (descriptors of physical and mental fatigue, travel, education, match-play and fixture congestion). RNA sequence (RNA-seq) analysis of pn-csERRα/γ KD hearts at fiv ERRα and γ are critical regulators of cardiac myocyte maturation, serving as transcriptional activators of adult cardiac metabolic and structural genes, and suppressors of non-cardiac lineages including fibroblast determination.Spinal cord injury (SCI) is an incurable condition, in which a cascade of cellular and molecular events triggered by inflammation and excitotoxicity impairs endogenous regeneration, namely remyelination and axonal outgrowth. We designed a treatment solution based on an implantable biomaterial (electrospun PLLA) loaded with ibuprofen and triiodothyronine (T3) to counteract inflammation, thus improving endogenous regeneration. In vivo efficacy was tested by implanting the drug-loaded-PLLA in the rat model of T8 contusion SCI. We observed the expected recovery of locomotion beginning on day 7. In PLLA-implanted rats (i.e. controls), the recovery stabilized at 21 days post lesion (DPL), after which no further improvement was observed. On the contrary, in PLLA+Ibu+T3 rats a further recovery and a significant treatment effect were observed, also confirmed by the gait analysis on 49DPL. Glutamate release at 24 hours and 8DPL was reduced in PLLA+Ibu+T3- compared to PLLA-implanted rats, such as the estimated lesion volume at 60DPL. The myelin and 200-neurofilament-positive area-fraction was higher in PLLA+Ibu+T3 implanted rats, where the percentage of astrocytes was significantly reduced. Only patients aged 16 to 55 years with stroke were included. Results- There were 5 cases of focal cerebral arteriopathy 2 males and 3 females. Three cases were from the cohort of 123 acute presentations of young stroke, and 2 cases were outpatient referrals. The mean age (range) was 43 (32-55) years. The majority presented with recurrent transient ischemic attacks/minor strokes within a single vascular territory over days to weeks.

  • To evaluate the health risk of radon and its progeny, a large amount of accurate monitoring data is needed according to the theory and practice of health risk assessment. However, the indoor radon levels in different regions in China and worldwide reveal temporal and spatial variations. In addition, the residents living in different areas follow distinct living modes. Therefore, it is recommended and accepted by many researchers to detect the radon level in local areas and subsequently conduct health risk assessments based on local detection data. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/sitagliptin.html In this study, 21 bedrooms of households in Weifang city were selected, and the indoor 222Rn and 220Rn levels were detected with RAD7 radon detector in winter, while the annual effective radiation dose was calculated for ordinary residents in Weifang city. Our investigation showed that the 24- and 12-hour average levels of 222Rn were 35.7±15.2 Bq/m3 and 36.2±15.8 Bq/m3, respectively. The 24- and 12-hour average levels of 220Rn were 30.4±12.3 Bq/m3 and 22.4±11.6 Bq/m3, respectively. There were significant differences in the average levels of 222Rn and 220Rn between floors. The estimated annual effective radiation dose received by ordinary residents in Weifang city was 1.7193 mSv, of which 0.9479 mSv originated from 222Rn and its progeny and 0.7714 mSv originated from 220Rn and its progeny, accounting for 55.1% and 44.9%, respectively, of the total dose. Our findings suggest that 220Rn should not be ignored by local residents in Weifang city, and more attention should be paid to 220Rn in future research.Vascular epiphytes represent almost 10% of all terrestrial plant diversity. Being structurally dependent on trees, epiphytes live at the interface of vegetation and atmosphere, making them susceptible to atmospheric changes. Despite the extensive research on vascular epiphytes, little is known about wind disturbance on these plants. Therefore, this study investigated the wind-epiphyte mechanical interactions by quantifying the drag forces on epiphytic bromeliads when subjected to increasing wind speeds (5-22 m s-1) in a wind tunnel. Drag coefficients (Cd) and Vogel exponents (B) were calculated to quantify the streamlining ability of different bromeliad species. Bromeliads' reconfiguration occurred first via bending and aligning leaves in the flow direction. Then leaves clustered and reduced the overall plant frontal area. This reconfiguration caused drag forces to increase at a slower rate as wind velocity increased. In the extreme case, drag force was reduced by 50% in a large Guzmania monostachia individual at a wind velocity of 22 m s-1, compared to a stiff model. This species had one of the smallest Cd (0.58) at the highest wind velocity, and the largest negative mean B (-0.98), representing the largest reconfiguration capacity amongst the tested bromeliads. The streamlining ability of bromeliads was mainly restricted by the rigidity of the lower part of the plant where the leaves are already densely clustered. Wind speeds used in this study were generally low as compared to storm force winds. At these low wind speeds, reconfiguration was an effective mechanism for drag reduction in bromeliads. This mechanism is likely to lose its effectiveness at higher wind speeds when continuous vigorous fluttering results in leaf damage and aspects such as root-attachment strength and substrate stability become more relevant. This study is a first step towards an understanding of the mechanical bottleneck in the epiphyte-tree-system under wind stress.The objective of this study was to use available data on the prevalence of COVID-19 risk factors in subpopulations and epidemic dynamics at the population level to estimate probabilities of severe illness and the case and infection fatality rates (CFR and IFR) stratified across subgroups representing all combinations of the risk factors age, comorbidities, obesity, and smoking status. We focus on the first year of the epidemic in Los Angeles County (LAC) (March 1, 2020-March 1, 2021), spanning three epidemic waves. A relative risk modeling approach was developed to estimate conditional effects from available marginal data. A dynamic stochastic epidemic model was developed to produce time-varying population estimates of epidemic parameters including the transmission and infection observation rate. The epidemic and risk models were integrated to produce estimates of subpopulation-stratified probabilities of disease progression and CFR and IFR for LAC. The probabilities of disease progression and CFR and IFR were found to vary as extensively between age groups as within age categories combined with the presence of absence of other risk factors, suggesting that it is inappropriate to summarize epidemiological parameters for age categories alone, let alone the entire population. The fine-grained subpopulation-stratified estimates of COVID-19 outcomes produced in this study are useful in understanding disparities in the effect of the epidemic on different groups in LAC, and can inform analyses of targeted subpopulation-level policy interventions.Mixed economies provide a unique context for testing theories of fertility change. Because they have a stake in two traditions, mixed-economy households balance the demands of both a labor-based subsistence economy, which benefits from a large family, and a wage-labor economy, which benefits from reduced fertility. Additionally, household size changes over the course of its life-cycle and shapes available economic opportunities. Here we argue that in mixed economies, fertility may reflect opportunities for livelihood diversity rather than simply responding to the restricted socioeconomic benefits of small families. While low fertility may in some cases have an economic benefit, low fertility can also limit the livelihood diversity of a household which is a key strategy for long-term economic success. We test this prediction with longitudinal data from a Maya community undergoing both a sustained decline in fertility and rapid integration into the market economy. Using household-level fertility, number of adults, and livelihood diversity at two time points, we find that household size is positively related to livelihood diversity, which in turn is positively related to household income per-capita. However, household size also has a negative association with income per capita. The results reflect a balancing act whereby households attempt to maximize the economic diversity with as few members as possible. Broadly, these results suggest that theories of fertility decline must account for how households pool resources and diversify economic activities in the face of increasing market integration, treating fertility as both an outcome and an input into economic and reproductive decision-making.

Therefore, this study investigated the wind-epiphyte mechanical interactions by quantifying the drag forces on epiphytic bromeliads when subjected to increasing wind speeds (5-22 m s-1) in a wind tunnel. Drag coefficients (Cd) and Vogel exponents (B) were calculated to quantify the streamlining ability of different bromeliad species. Bromeliads' reconfiguration occurred first via bending and aligning leaves in the flow direction. Then leaves clustered and reduced the overall plant frontal area. This reconfiguration caused drag forces to increase at a slower rate as wind velocity increased. In the extreme case, drag force was reduced by 50% in a large Guzmania monostachia individual at a wind velocity of 22 m s-1, compared to a stiff model. This species had one of the smallest Cd (0.58) at the highest wind velocity, and the largest negative mean B (-0.98), representing the largest reconfiguration capacity amongst the tested bromeliads. We focus on the first year of the epidemic in Los Angeles County (LAC) (March 1, 2020-March 1, 2021), spanning three epidemic waves. A relative risk modeling approach was developed to estimate conditional effects from available marginal data. A dynamic stochastic epidemic model was developed to produce time-varying population estimates of epidemic parameters including the transmission and infection observation rate. The epidemic and risk models were integrated to produce estimates of subpopulation-stratified probabilities of disease progression and CFR and IFR for LAC. The probabilities of disease progression and CFR and IFR were found to vary as extensively between age groups as within age categories combined with the presence of absence of other risk factors, suggesting that it is inappropriate to summarize epidemiological parameters for age categories alone, let alone the entire population. Because they have a stake in two traditions, mixed-economy households balance the demands of both a labor-based subsistence economy, which benefits from a large family, and a wage-labor economy, which benefits from reduced fertility. Additionally, household size changes over the course of its life-cycle and shapes available economic opportunities. Here we argue that in mixed economies, fertility may reflect opportunities for livelihood diversity rather than simply responding to the restricted socioeconomic benefits of small families. While low fertility may in some cases have an economic benefit, low fertility can also limit the livelihood diversity of a household which is a key strategy for long-term economic success. We test this prediction with longitudinal data from a Maya community undergoing both a sustained decline in fertility and rapid integration into the market economy. Using household-level fertility, number of adults, and livelihood diversity at two time points, we find that household size is positively related to livelihood diversity, which in turn is positively related to household income per-capita. However, household size also has a negative association with income per capita. The results reflect a balancing act whereby households attempt to maximize the economic diversity with as few members as possible. Broadly, these results suggest that theories of fertility decline must account for how households pool resources and diversify economic activities in the face of increasing market integration, treating fertility as both an outcome and an input into economic and reproductive decision-making.

The electrospun scaffolds showed gradient distribution of BMP-2/nanoHA contents and the fiber orientations gradually changed from random to align. Biomimetic mineralization demonstrated that calcium and phosphorus elements can deposit onto the surface of the nanofibers in a gradient manner similar to nanoHA content. BMSCs cultured on the gradient nanofibrous scaffolds exhibited high cell viability and cell morphology gradually changed from disorder to highly align similar to the underlying fiber orientation.     Older persons with a suspected hip fracture and suffering considerable pain are common patients in the emergency medical services (EMS). Pain treatment needs to be improved and fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) can be one option. The purpose of this paper was to analyse prehospital pain in patients with a suspected hip fracture under EMS care and to compare standard treatment and FICB.

    An evaluation of a retrospective case-control study comprising 135 patients from a pilot project with FICB in an EMS organisation in Sweden. The control patients were matched with FICB patients. Pain was assessed on the arrival of the EMS and on arrival in hospital.

    In all, 27 patients received FICB and 108 had standard pain treatment. There was a significant reduction in pain in both groups. However, there was a more marked reduction in pain among patients who received FICB than in the control group. So, for static pain, 56% experienced a reduction in pain in the FICB group versus 30% among controls (p<0.01). The corresponding values for dynamic pain were 85% and 59% (p<0.01).

Facilitation of skin-to-skin at caesarean section birth is growing despite environmental and historical challenges. This is led by the expectancy of women and of health professionals increasingly understanding its importance.

    Integrative literature review.

    The databases of SCOPUS, PubMed, CINAHL plus, Wiley Online, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and MIDIRS were used to identify studies from 2010-2020. Hand searching of library journals, reference and citation lists were also used.

    The framework of Whittemore and Knafl (2005) was used to guide the literature search, thematic analysis, and synthesis of original research. Initial screening against inclusion criteria was utilised for English-published papers of full-term, weld justified by research as best-practice for health and well-being.     A scoping review was conducted across six databases and grey literature to clarify intensivists' experiences of empathy and identify directions of future inquiries. The search had no date limits and was specific to empathy, intensivists, and ICU environments. Results were blindly and independently reviewed by authors.

    The search yielded 628 manuscripts; 45 met inclusion criteria. Three overarching themes connected the manuscripts (1) the risks and benefits of empathy, (2) the spectrum of connection and distance of intensivists from patients/families, and (3) the facilitators and barriers to empathy's development.

Integrative literature review. The databases of SCOPUS, PubMed, CINAHL plus, Wiley Online, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and MIDIRS were used to identify studies from 2010-2020. Hand searching of library journals, reference and citation lists were also used. The framework of Whittemore and Knafl (2005) was used to guide the literature search, thematic analysis, and synthesis of original research. Initial screening against inclusion criteria was utilised for English-published papers of full-term, weld justified by research as best-practice for health and well-being. The findings of this paper highlight the importance of maternity settings facilitating both skin-to-skin and non-separation for all women and their newborns, even more so at caesarean section births. Research shows that physician empathy can improve patients' reporting of symptoms, participation in care, compliance, and satisfaction; however, success in harnessing these advantages in the ICU hinges on a myriad of contextual factors. This study describes the current state of knowledge about intensivists' empathy. A scoping review was conducted across six databases and grey literature to clarify intensivists' experiences of empathy and identify directions of future inquiries. The search had no date limits and was specific to empathy, intensivists, and ICU environments. Results were blindly and independently reviewed by authors. The search yielded 628 manuscripts; 45 met inclusion criteria. Three overarching themes connected the manuscripts (1) the risks and benefits of empathy, (2) the spectrum of connection and distance of intensivists from patients/families, and (3) the facilitators and barriers to empathy's development. Empathy among intensivists is not a dichotomous phenomenon. It instead exists on continua.
