Clinical studies have investigated the epidemiologic association between MetS or its components and OA. Results suggested strong epidemiologic associations between MetS and OA, especially in the Asian population. Animal studies also indicated that metabolic dysregulation may lead to OA pathogenesis. Knowledge on their electrophysiological characteristics is still scarce. In this study, we are investigating whether these patients have specific electrophysiological characteristics. METHODS The electrophysiological data from 13 patients with anti-Nfasc155 IgG4 antibodies, 9 with anti-CNTN1 IgG4 antibodies were compared with those of 40 consecutive CIDP patients without antibodies. RESULTS All the patients with antibodies against Nfasc155 or CNTN1 fulfilled the EFNS/PNS electrodiagnostic criteria for definite CIDP. There was no electrophysiological difference between patients with anti-CNTN1 and anti-Nfasc155 antibodies. Nerve conduction abnormalities were heterogeneously distributed along nerves trunks and roots. They were more pronounced than in CIDP without antibodies. Motor conduction velocity on median nerve 7.4 ms were predictive of positive antibodies against the node of Ranvier with a sensitivity of 59% and a specificity of 93%. CONCLUSIONS Marked conduction abnormalities may suggest the presence of positive antibodies against the node of Ranvier. OBJECTIVE Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) provides a way to modulate spatial attention by enhancing the ratio of neural activity between the left and right hemispheres, with a potential benefit for the rehabilitation of visual neglect. METHODS We tested the effect of bilateral tDCS in healthy individuals performing a visual detection task. This protocol consists in the positioning of the anode and cathode on mirror positions over the left and right parietal areas. The stimulation was repeated over three days to maximize the chance to observe a bias to the hemispace controlateral to the anode. RESULTS Compared to a sham treatment, left anodal - right cathodal stimulation enhanced attention across the full range of space, since the first day with no build-up effect on the next days, and modified the balance of left-right omissions when stimuli appeared at the same time. CONCLUSION Bilateral tDCS improved detection in both visual fields, with no privileged processing of one side, except when concurrent stimuli were presented. The results provide partial support to the hemispheric rivalry hypothesis. DESIGN longitudinal study. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING Sarcopenia was prospectively evaluated in 31 consecutive patients aged 70 to 88 years, referred in one hospital unit of south eastern France, for a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) before cancer treatment initiation. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS CGA, measures of muscle strength and physical performances were performed at baseline (T0) and at the end of cancer treatment (T1). Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the end of treatment. At T0, 8 patients (among 31) had a probable sarcopenia according to European consensus, and 18 had altered physical performance. At T1, 15 patients (among 19) had abnormal one leg balance test. Finally, only one patient had a sarcopenia confirmed by DXA. CONCLUSION This preliminary study showed a high prevalence of muscle disorders before initiation of ADT in a population of elderly cancer prostate patients with intermediate frailty status, and an increased risk of falls at the end of ADT. This highlighted the importance of screening for sarcopenia before treatment initiation, to prevent the occurrence or aggravation of sarcopenia by possible adjustment of treatment, and implementation of appropriate exercise and nutrition interventions.OBJECTIVES Recently, elevated homocysteine was reported to be associated with frailty in cross-sectional studies. METHOD Data of 1480 individuals aged 70-87 years from the ageing arm of Rugao Longevity and Ageing Study were used. Five variants of the four homocysteine metabolic enzyme genes were genotyped. Frailty was defined using Fried's phenotype criteria. RESULTS The percentage of high homocysteine (>15μmol/L) is 33.3%. Two functional variants that decrease methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) activities, C677T (Ala222Val, rs1801133) and A1298C (Glu429Ala, rs1801131), were significantly associated with increased homocysteine levels (β=-1.16, p=0.01; and β=1.46, p less then 0.001, respectively).
