Examples of hydrogels that possess clinically favorable properties, such as injectability, self-healing ability, stimulus-responsiveness, and pro-remodeling features, are also covered.Inspired by the relationship between the well-ordered architecture of aragonite crystals and biopolymers found in natural nacre, we present a facile strategy to construct large-scale organic/inorganic nacre-mimetics with hierarchical structure via a water-evaporation driven self-assembly process. We connect LAPONITE®-nanoclay platelets with each other using carboxymethyl cellulose, a cellulose derivative, thus creating thin, flexible films with a local brick-and-mortar architecture. The dried films show a pronounced resistance against tensile forces allowing for stronger thin films than nacre. In terms of functionalities, we report excellent glass-like transparency along with exceptional shape-persistent flame shielding. We also demonstrate that through metal ion-coordination we can further strengthen the interactions between the polymers and the nanoclays, and thus enhanced mechanical, and thermal properties as well as resistance against swelling and dissolution in aqueous environments. The method is evaluated by first computing the relative error on generated images to show that simulating the cartilage helps improve the morphological quantification of the airway structure. We then propose a cartilage index that summarizes the degree of cartilage of bronchial trees structures and perform an indirect validation with subjects with COPD. As shown by the results, the proposed approach paves the way for the use of CNNs to precisely and accurately measure small lung airways morphology, with the final goal to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of pulmonary diseases.Background and hypothesis Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is an increasingly popular treatment modality for glenohumeral joint arthritis in association with rotator cuff arthropathy. A prolonged hospital stay following joint arthroplasty risks increased complications for patients plus financial implications for institutions. We hypothesized that RSA could be safely and effectively carried out as an outpatient procedure with reduced risks to patients and institutional costs. Methods Patients attending our institution for RSA during March 2015 to August 2018 were reviewed preoperatively for consideration for RSA as an outpatient procedure. The inclusion criteria were arthritis of the shoulder having failed conservative management, age older than 50 years, and intact deltoid muscle function. Patients were excluded if they underwent RSA for trauma or for revision following previous total shoulder replacement or hemiarthroplasty. Overall health, social circumstances, and individual wishes were considered. Results A total of 21 patients underwent RSA as an outpatient procedure. The mean age was 74 years (range, 59-84 years). There were 8 male and 13 female patients. No overnight stays were required in patients in whom outpatient surgery was planned. The Oxford Shoulder Score increased from a mean of 16 (range, 4-30) preoperatively to a mean of 31 (range, 7-35) at 6 months postoperatively; it was a mean of 36 (range, 7-48) at 12 months postoperatively. Of the patients, 88% were "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the service and 81% would undergo the surgical procedure again as a day-case procedure. Conclusion RSA as an outpatient procedure can be carried out effectively with high patient satisfaction rates in carefully selected patients.Background A linear relationship between baseplate insertion torque and compression force in reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) baseplates with central screw design has been recently established. A digital torque gauge was used to measure insertion torque applied to the baseplate, whereas compression data were collected continuously from a load cell. Additionally, 2 predictive models were developed to predict the compression forces of each baseplate design at varying levels of torque. Results A linear relationship was found between baseplate compression and insertion torque for all 3 baseplate designs. Both the monoblock and 2-piece locking designs achieved the goal torque of 6.8 Nm, whereas the 2-piece nonlocking design did not due to material strip-out. No significant difference in maximum compression was found between the monoblock and 2-piece locking designs.

Recently 5-fluorouracil 0.5% / salicylic acid 10% (5-FU/SA) topical solution has been included in the National Italian portfolio for lesion-directed treatment of grade I/II actinic keratosis (AKs) located on the face or scalp. To describe the utility of dermoscopy and RCM in treatment response monitoring of a series of AKs treated with 5-FU/SA as lesion-directed therapy. Consecutive patients were prospectively treated for a maximum of 12 weeks with 5-FU/SA for AKs located on the face or scalp. Clinical, dermoscopic and confocal images of one index AK were acquired at each visit and pre-specified criteria were evaluated. Clinical, dermoscopic and confocal responses were evaluated at last follow up visit. Fourteen patients were enrolled, of which five were treated for 12 weeks, 7 for 8 and 2 for 4 weeks. At a median follow up of 30 weeks, 64.3% (9/14) index AKs achieved complete clinical, 50% (7/14) complete dermoscopic and 42.9% (6/14) complete confocal clearance. Local skin reaction was mild and significantly decreased during therapy administration. Although the small number of cases, our study underlines the utility of both dermoscopy and in-vivo RCM in 5-FU/SA treatment response monitoring for AKs located on the face or scalp. Specifically, the overwhelming need for intensive care unit (ICU) beds within epicenters of the pandemic has created a need for consideration as to how acute coronary syndrome cases, and specifically ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, are managed postprocedure. While most patients in the United States continue to be managed in coronary care units after primary percutaneous coronary intervention, there is a robust literature regarding the ability to triage STEMI patients safely and efficiently with low-risk features to non-ICU beds. We review the various risk scores for STEMI triage and the data supporting their usage. In summary, these findings support an approach to low-risk STEMI triage that does not come at the expense of quality patient care or outcomes, where up to two-thirds of patients with STEMI may be able to be safely managed without ICU-level care.Background Brain irradiation is considered a cofactor influencing the dentate nucleus (DN) signal intensity (SI) on unenhanced T1 -weighted images in patients exposed to gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). Purpose To assess the effect of gadodiamide and whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) on T1 -weighted images and on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps of DN. Study type Single-center retrospective. Population In all, 125 patients who underwent brain MRIs were classified into four groups 1) patients who did neither receive intravenous GBCAs injections nor irradiation (controls); 2) patients having ≥3 GBCAs-enhanced scans and no WBRT; 3) patients having WBRT and less then 3 GBCAs-enhanced scans; and 4) patients having WBRT and ≥ 3 GBCAs-enhanced scans. Field strength/sequence 1.5T magnet, echo-planar diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) and unenhanced T1 -weighted sequences. Assessment The DN-to-pons SI ratio on unenhanced T1 -weighted images and ADC values of the DN were calculated. Values were compared between groups and relative to the cumulative gadolinium dose and to the time delay after WBRT. Statistical tests Statistical analysis included the Mann-Whitney U-test and Spearman's rank-order correlation. Results DN ADC values were not significantly different (P = 0.34) between patients exposed to gadodiamide (0.81 ± 0.06) and controls (0.83 ± 0.07). There were no differences in DN ADC values (P = 0.28) and DN-to-pons SI ratios (P = 0.42) between patients exposed to WBRT (ADC values 0.85 ± 0.09; SI ratio 1.11 ± 0.10) and controls (ADC values 0.83 ± 0.06; SI ratio 1.09 ± 0.06). There was a significant negative correlation between DN ADC values and the time (days) since the end of WBRT (r = - 0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.55, -0.06; P less then 0.05). Data conclusion We did not find changes suggestive of gadolinium-related tissue microstructural damage of the DN. The ADC values of the DN are associated with the time from WBRT. Methods Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples were obtained from 10 controls and 18 children with M. pneumoniae-associated BO. We analyzed the BAL T cells for interferon (IFN)-γ, interleukin (IL)-4, IL-9, IL-17, CD25, and Foxp3 by intercellular flow cytometry. The associations with T-cell subpopulations and lung function parameters were determined. Results In BAL fluid, significantly increased proportions of T-helper 1 (Th1), Th17, and Tc1 cells were found in M. pneumoniae-associated BO patients when compared with controls. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is one of the methods of treating patients with chronic heart failure, which can reduce the mortality rate of this group. Scintigraphic assessment of sympathetic myocardial innervation allows us to evaluate the heart failure prognosis and the effectiveness of interventional treatment. The method is based on use of the radiopharmaceutical 123 I-methiodiobenzylguanidine (123 I-MIBG), which is a structural analogue of norepinephrine and is able to selectively accumulate in the sympathetic nerve endings. This review includes a brief description of norepinephrine metabolism and pharmacokinetics of 123 I-MIBG in the sympathetic nerve ending, a brief description of the study methodology and the clinical significance of this method in patients with heart failure. Particular attention is paid to the possibilities of using this method in patients with severe chronic heart failure before and after CRT.This review focuses on possibilities of using soluble ST2 as a HF marker for diagnostics, stratification of risk of adverse events, and for evaluation of prognosis and treatment effectiveness in patients with CHF. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is one of the methods of treating patients with chronic heart failure, which can reduce the mortality rate of this group. Scintigraphic assessment of sympathetic myocardial innervation allows us to evaluate the heart failure prognosis and the effectiveness of interventional treatment. The method is based on use of the radiopharmaceutical 123 I-methiodiobenzylguanidine (123 I-MIBG), which is a structural analogue of norepinephrine and is able to selectively accumulate in the sympathetic nerve endings. This review includes a brief description of norepinephrine metabolism and pharmacokinetics of 123 I-MIBG in the sympathetic nerve ending, a brief description of the study methodology and the clinical significance of this method in patients with heart failure. Free energy surfaces have played a central role in studying protein conformational changes and enzymatic reactions over decades. Yet, free energy barriers and kinetics are highly dependent on the coordinates chosen to define the surface, and furthermore, the dynamics during the reactions are often overlooked. Our recent study on the Pin1-catalyzed isomerization reaction has indicated that the isomerization transition events remarkably deviate from the free energy path, highlighting the need to understand the reaction dynamics in more detail. To this end, here we investigate the reaction coordinates that describe the transition states of the free energy and transition pathways by minimizing the cross-entropy function. We show that the isomerization transition events can be expressed by the concerted changes in the improper torsion angle ζ and nearby backbone torsional angles of the ligand, whereas the transition state of the free energy surface involves changes in a broad range of coordinates including multiple protein-ligand interactions. The current result supports the previous finding that the isomerization transitions occur quickly from the conformational excited states, which is in sharp contrast to the slow and collective changes suggested from the free energy path. Our results further indicate that the coordinates derived from the transition trajectories are not sufficient for finding the transition states on the free energy surfaces due to the lack of information from conformational excited states.We developed a normalization method utilizing the expression levels of a panel of endogenous proteins as normalization standards (EPNS herein). We tested the validity of the method using two sets of TMT-labeled data and found that this normalization method effectively reduced global intensity bias at the protein level. The coefficient of variation (CV) of overall median was reduced by 55% and 82% on average, comparing to the reduction by 72% and 86% after normalization using upper quartile. Furthermore, we used differential protein expression analysis and statistical learning to identify biomarkers for colorectal cancer from a CPTAC data set. The expression changes of a panel of proteins, including NUP205, GTPBP4, CNN2, GNL3, and S100A11, all of which highly correlate with colorectal cancer. Applying these five proteins as model features, random forest modeling obtained prediction results with the maximum AUC of 0.9998 using EPNS-normalized data, comparing favorably to the AUC of 0.9739 using the raw data. Thus, the normalization method based on EPNS reduced the global intensity bias and is applicable for quantitative proteomic analysis.We address the problem of the quantitative prediction of micelle formation in dilute aqueous solutions of ionic surfactants using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a model system through a computational approach that involves three steps a) execution of coarse-grained simulations based on the MARTINI force field (with slightly modified parameters to afford the formation of large micelles); b) reverse mapping of the final self-assembled coarse-grained configuration into an all-atom configuration; and c) final relaxation of this all-atom configuration through short-time (on the order of a few tens of nanoseconds), detailed isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations using the CHARMM36 force field. For a given concentration of the solution in SDS molecules, the modified MARTINI-based coarse-grained simulations lead to the formation of large micelles characterized by mean aggregation numbers above the experimentally observed ones. However, by re-introducing the detailed chemical structure through a strategy that solves a well-defined geometric problem and re-equilibrating, these large micellar aggregates quickly dissolve to smaller ones and equilibrate to sizes that perfectly match the average micelle size measured experimentally at the given surfactant concentration. From the all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we also deduce the surfactant diffusivity DSDS and the zero-shear rate viscosity, η0, of the solution, which are observed to compare very favorably with the few experimental values that we were able to find in the literature.Genome-scale gene knockout is an important approach to the study of global genetic interactions. SCRaMbLEing of synthetic yeast chromosomes provides an efficient way to generate random deletion mutants. Here, we demonstrate the use of SCRaMbLE to explore synthetic lethal interactions. First, all essential genes of yeast chromosome III (chrIII) were clustered in a centromeric plasmid. We found that three types of reorganized clustered chrIII essential genes had similar transcriptional levels. Further, SCRaMbLEing of synthetic chromosome III (synIII) with supplementary clustered essential genes enables deletion of large chromosomal regions. Investigation of 141 SCRaMbLEd strains revealed varied deletion frequencies of synIII chromosomal regions. Among the no deletion detected regions, a hidden synthetic lethal interaction was revealed in the region of synIII 82-88 kb. This study shows that SCRaMbLE with clustered essential genes enhances streamlining of synthetic yeast chromosome and provides a novel strategy to uncover complex genetic interactions.Molecular simulations with seven current AMBER- and CHARMM-based force fields yield markedly differing internal bond vector autocorrelation function predictions for many of the 223 methine and methylene H-C bonds of the 56-residue protein GB3. The direct use of EV is an attractive therapeutic strategy and it has been shown that the kinetics of delivery of the EV to the targeted tissue may impact the outcomes. However, there are currently no technologies to deliver EV to the heart in a controlled and tunable manner. The objective of this study was to design a controlled release system, based on a photocurable adhesive polymer, to locally deliver EV to the cardiac tissue. We have first demonstrated that the adhesive polymer, PGSA-g-EG, did not impact the EV bioactivity in vitro and was biocompatible in vivo when tested in a rat model. Importantly, the polymer remained attached to the heart surface for at least 1 month. We have then evaluated and optimized the in viable manner, EV to the heart. The high frequency of administration coupled with the side effects of eye drops leads to poor adherence for patients. Drug-eluting contact lenses have long been sought as a potentially superior alternative for sustained ocular drug delivery; but loading sufficient drug into contact lenses and control the release of the drug is still a challenge. A dexamethasone releasing contact lens (Dex-Lens) was previously developed by encapsulating a dexamethasone-polymer film within the periphery of a hydrogel-based contact lens. Here, we demonstrate safety and efficacy of the Dex-Lens in rabbit models in the treatment of anterior ocular inflammation. The Dex-Lens delivered drug for 7 days in vivo . Ocular inflammation is normally treated by steroid eye drops. Depending on the type and severity of inflammation, patients may have to take drops every hour for days at a time. Such severe dosing regimen can lead to patients missing doses. Also, more than 95% drug in an eye drop never goes inside the eye. The inorganic nucleation process, however, is complex in natural waters. Most studies focused primarily on single salt fouling of membranes, and related treatment for single solute systems. However, scale formation, especially gypsum, is affected by the presence of different salts and metals. In this wok, for the first time, we investigate the mixed precipitation of iron oxides and gypsum. The role of citric acid in the inhibition of precipitation was studied for different concentrations in both the absence and the presence of Fe2+. Conductivity and ion concentration measurements were used to estimate the formation time of gypsum. Scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XDR) analysis, and Infra-Red spectroscopy analysis were used to provide structural information. Collected data showed that the presence of Fe2+ accelerates gypsum precipitation and shortens its induction time. Analytic results showed that gypsum crystals are greatly affected by the presence of Fe2+ ions, which generated needle shaped crystals. Citric acid can delay the induction time of gypsum precipitation. It also affects the morphology of gypsum crystals through adsorption mechanism. XDR diagrams revealed that the presence of citric acid (20 mg/L) can stabilize the bassanite phase (CaSO4·½H2O) for **** longer periods. We found that in addition to the well documented uncertainties in the exposure-response functions, missingness in PM2.5 prediction, PM2.5 prediction error, and prediction error in population distribution resulted to a 40.5%, 25.2% and 15.9% lower mortality assessment compared to the mortality assessed with the best-performed source data, respectively. With the best-performed source data, we estimated a total of approximately 25 million PM2.5-related mortality during 2001-2017 in China. From 2001 to 2017, The PM2.5 variations, growth and aging of population, decrease in baseline mortality led to a 7.8% increase, a 42.0% increase and a 24.6% decrease in PM2.5-related mortality, separately. Ocular inflammation is normally treated by steroid eye drops. Depending on the type and severity of inflammation, patients may have to take drops every hour for days at a time. Such severe dosing regimen can lead to patients missing doses. Also, more than 95% drug in an eye drop never goes inside the eye. Here we present a contact lens that release a steroid (dexamethasone) for seven days at a time. It is much more efficient than eye drops and a significant improvement since once worn, the patient will avoid missing doses.In reverse osmosis desalination, the concentrate is a saline solution that may become supersaturated. Heterogeneous nucleation of salts occurs at the membrane surface, resulting in the buildup of inorganic deposits on the membrane. The inorganic nucleation process, however, is complex in natural waters. Most studies focused primarily on single salt fouling of membranes, and related treatment for single solute systems. However, scale formation, especially gypsum, is affected by the presence of different salts and metals. In this wok, for the first time, we investigate the mixed precipitation of iron oxides and gypsum. The role of citric acid in the inhibition of precipitation was studied for different concentrations in both the absence and the presence of Fe2+. Conductivity and ion concentration measurements were used to estimate the formation time of gypsum. Scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction (XDR) analysis, and Infra-Red spectroscopy analysis were used to provide structural information. Collected data showed that the presence of Fe2+ accelerates gypsum precipitation and shortens its induction time. Analytic results showed that gypsum crystals are greatly affected by the presence of Fe2+ ions, which generated needle shaped crystals. Citric acid can delay the induction time of gypsum precipitation. It also affects the morphology of gypsum crystals through adsorption mechanism. XDR diagrams revealed that the presence of citric acid (20 mg/L) can stabilize the bassanite phase (CaSO4·½H2O) for much longer periods. The risk of developing severe illness from COVID-19 and of dying from it increases with age. This statistical association has led to numerous highly problematic policy suggestions and comments revealing underlying ageist attitudes and promoting age discrimination. Such attitudes are based on negative stereotypes on the health and functioning of older adults. As a result, the lives of older people are disvalued, including in possible triage situations and in the potential limitation of some measures against the spread of the pandemic to older adults. These outcomes are unjustified and unethical. We develop six propositions against the ageism underlying these suggestions to spur a more adequate response to the current pandemic in which the needs and dignity of older people are respected.Purpose Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are standard therapy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The safety and activity of the combination of ipilimumab and nivolumab in patients who have received prior ICI targeting the programmed death 1 (PD-1) pathway remains unknown. We evaluated ipilimumab and nivolumab in patients with metastatic RCC after prior treatment with anti-PD-1 pathway-targeted therapy. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ipi-549.html Patients and methods Patients with metastatic RCC who received prior anti-PD-1 pathway-targeted therapy and subsequently received ipilimumab and nivolumab were reviewed. Objective response rate and progression-free survival per investigator assessment were recorded. Toxicity of ipilimumab and nivolumab was also assessed. Results Forty-five patients with metastatic RCC were included. All patients (100%) received prior ICIs targeting the PD-1 pathway. The median age was 62 years (range, 21-82 years). At a median follow-up of 12 months, the objective response rate to ipilimumab and nivolumab was 20%. The median progression-free survival while on ipilimumab and nivolumab was 4 months (range, 0.8-19 months). Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) of any grade with ipilimumab and nivolumab were recorded in 29 (64%) of the 45 patients; grade 3 irAEs were recorded in 6 (13%) of the 45 patients. Conclusion Ipilimumab and nivolumab demonstrated antitumor activity with acceptable toxicity in patients with metastatic RCC who had prior treatment with checkpoint inhibition.Scene processing is fundamentally influenced and constrained by spatial layout and spatial associations with objects. These intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) have well-established roles in a variety of reflex responses to changes in ambient light intensity, including circadian photoentrainment. In this article, we review the growing evidence, obtained primarily from laboratory **** and humans, that the ability to sense light via melanopsin is also an important component of perceptual and form vision. Melanopsin photoreception has low temporal resolution, making it fundamentally biased toward detecting changes in ambient light and coarse patterns rather than fine details. Nevertheless, melanopsin can indirectly impact high-acuity vision by driving aspects of light adaptation ranging from pupil constriction to changes in visual circuit performance. Melanopsin also contributes directly to perceptions of brightness, and recent data suggest that this influences the appearance not only of overall scene brightness, but also of low-frequency patterns. CMV infections are frequently symptomatic in case of a primary infection during pregnancy. Generally, maternal immunity protects the newborn against a symptomatic course of the CMV infection. Methods We present clinical information and medical images of a neonate with non-primary congenital CMV infection. Results We report the case of a severe congenital infection in a newborn clinically presenting with diffuse petechia, facial dysmorphisms, respiratory distress, hepatomegaly and hypotonia. The girl was born to a mother with CMV immunity. Blood results demonstrated thrombocytopenia and elevated transaminases. Brain MRI revealed ventricular dilatation and germinolytic cysts, compatible with CMV infection. Auditory brain stem response testing was abnormal. CMV culture of saliva was positive. This led to the diagnosis of a severe congenital CMV infection due to a non-primary maternal infection. Antiviral treatment with valganciclovir was initiated immediately and continued for 6 months. Conclusion Our case illustrates that, even when the mother was demonstrated CMV immune, congenital CMV infection is still an important differential diagnostic consideration in neonates presenting with congenital cerebral abnormalities, thrombocytopenia and/or hearing loss. At a median follow-up of 12 months, the objective response rate to ipilimumab and nivolumab was 20%. The median progression-free survival while on ipilimumab and nivolumab was 4 months (range, 0.8-19 months). Immune-related adverse events (irAEs) of any grade with ipilimumab and nivolumab were recorded in 29 (64%) of the 45 patients; grade 3 irAEs were recorded in 6 (13%) of the 45 patients. Conclusion Ipilimumab and nivolumab demonstrated antitumor activity with acceptable toxicity in patients with metastatic RCC who had prior treatment with checkpoint inhibition.Scene processing is fundamentally influenced and constrained by spatial layout and spatial associations with objects. In this article, we review recent advances in assessing how spatial layout and spatial relations influence scene processing. We examine the organization of the larger environment and how we take full advantage of spatial configurations independently of semantic information. We demonstrate that a clear differentiation of spatial from semantic information is necessary to advance research in the field of scene processing. These intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) have well-established roles in a variety of reflex responses to changes in ambient light intensity, including circadian photoentrainment. In this article, we review the growing evidence, obtained primarily from laboratory mice and humans, that the ability to sense light via melanopsin is also an important component of perceptual and form vision. Melanopsin photoreception has low temporal resolution, making it fundamentally biased toward detecting changes in ambient light and coarse patterns rather than fine details. Nevertheless, melanopsin can indirectly impact high-acuity vision by driving aspects of light adaptation ranging from pupil constriction to changes in visual circuit performance. Melanopsin also contributes directly to perceptions of brightness, and recent data suggest that this influences the appearance not only of overall scene brightness, but also of low-frequency patterns. CMV infections are frequently symptomatic in case of a primary infection during pregnancy. Generally, maternal immunity protects the newborn against a symptomatic course of the CMV infection. Methods We present clinical information and medical images of a neonate with non-primary congenital CMV infection. Results We report the case of a severe congenital infection in a newborn clinically presenting with diffuse petechia, facial dysmorphisms, respiratory distress, hepatomegaly and hypotonia. The girl was born to a mother with CMV immunity. Blood results demonstrated thrombocytopenia and elevated transaminases. Brain MRI revealed ventricular dilatation and germinolytic cysts, compatible with CMV infection. Auditory brain stem response testing was abnormal. CMV culture of saliva was positive. This led to the diagnosis of a severe congenital CMV infection due to a non-primary maternal infection. Antiviral treatment with valganciclovir was initiated immediately and continued for 6 months. Conclusion Our case illustrates that, even when the mother was demonstrated CMV immune, congenital CMV infection is still an important differential diagnostic consideration in neonates presenting with congenital cerebral abnormalities, thrombocytopenia and/or hearing loss. Using messages specific to each group may improve vaccination coverage among HCP.Objectives Indoor tanning, which is most common among 18-25-year-old white women, increases the risk of skin cancer. To address this problem, we developed and tested messages with a national sample of indoor tanners to determine beliefs that would encourage them to quit. Methods Messages discouraging indoor tanning using different persuasive themes (skin cancer risk, appearance risk, well-being enhancement) were developed based on formative research and a review of intervention efforts. We conducted an online experiment to test the final messages with a national sample of 480 indoor tanners. Results Messages that emphasized skin cancer risk out-performed messages that focused on well-being enhancement or damage to appearance in terms of intention to quit indoor tanning. Analyses revealed 2 key mediators perceived argument strength and beliefs related to the effects of indoor tanning. Conclusions Theory- and evidence-informed public health communications can contribute to improving health-related behaviors. This study used data from the fourth round of the National Family and Health Survey (NFHS-4) conducted in India in 2015-16. The study sample comprised 59,629 women who had had at least two births in the five years preceding the survey. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to the data. About 16.4% of the women switched their location of childbirth between successive births; 9.1% switched to a health facility contributing to a net increment of 1.9% in institutional delivery, varying greatly across states and regions. There was at least a 4 percentage point net increment in institutional births in Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana, but the shift was more in favour of home births in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. Women with high parity and a large birth interval had higher odds of switching their place of childbirth, and this was in favour of a health facility, while women with higher education, from lower social groups, living in urban areas, who had not received four antenatal care visits, and who belonged to a higher wealth quintile had higher odds of switching their place of childbirth to a health facility, despite having lower odds of switching their childbirth location. The study provides evidence of women in India switching their location of childbirth for successive births, and this was more prevalent in areas where the rate of institutional delivery was low. Only a few states showed a higher net increment in favour of a health facility. This suggests that there is a need for action in specific states and regions of India to achieve universal health coverage.OBJECTIVE Bereavement care is one of the major components of hospice palliative care. Their professional backgrounds included physicians (n = 12), nurses (n = 172), social workers (n = 59), psychologists (n = 34), spiritual care specialists (n = 15), and others (n = 9). A cross-sectional design was used and a standardized questionnaire including emotional and cognitive barriers was developed.

Soil pollution from heavy metals poses a serious risk for environment and public health. Phytoremediation is an eco-friendly and cheaper alternative compared to chemical-physical techniques. We carried out in vitro tests where three microorganisms Trichoderma harzianum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Wickerhamomyces anomalus were exposed to eight different heavy metals (one metal at a time) in order to evaluate resistance, growth and bioaccumulation capability for each metal (Ni, Cd, Cu, V, Zn, As, Pb, Hg). Taking into account the natural characteristics of T. harzianum, (resistance to environmental stress, resistance to pathogenic fungi, ability to establish symbiotic relationships with superior green plants) and the good bioaccumulation capacity for V, As, Cd, Hg, Pb shown after in vitro tests, it was chosen as a microorganism to be used in greenhouse tests. Controlled exposure tests were performed in greenhouse, where Arundo donax and mycorrhized Arundo donax with T. harzianum were exposed for 7 months at tw6) after exposition at L1 and L2 respectively; A. donax mycorrhized with T. harzianum showed the highest TF values for Cd (0.70), As (0.56), V (0.24), Pb (0.18) after exposition at L2, and Zn (0.30) after exposition at L1. Our study showed a good growth capability in contaminated soils and a good bioaccumulation capability of heavy metals, both for A. donax and mycorrhized A. donax with T. harzianum. Multivariate logistic regression, linear regression, and mixed models were applied to estimate any associations. Analyses were carried out depending on whether mothers stopped working during the first, second, or third trimester of pregnancy. RESULTS Maternal occupational exposure to unintentionally emitted carbonaceous NPs was associated with SGA in the overall study population by multivariate analysis (ORa = 1.80, 95% CI 1.29, 2.46), as well as in sub-groups of mothers who stopped working during the second (ORa = 1.84, 95% CI 1.13, 3.02) or third (ORa = 1.80, 95% CI 1.10, 2.95) trimesters. There were no significant associations with HC at birth or two years of age. CONCLUSIONS We found a significant association between occupational exposure to carbonaceous NPs and SGA, with the effect depending on the period of exposure during pregnancy. These results should encourage further studies concerning the adverse effects of exposure to carbonaceous NPs on the development of offspring. Air pollution has consistently been associated with cardiometabolic outcomes, although associations with obesity have only been recently reported. Studies of air pollution and adiposity have mostly relied on body mass index (BMI) rather than body fat percentage (BF%), and most have not accounted for noise as a possible confounder. Additionally, it is unknown whether genetic predisposition for obesity increases susceptibility to the obesogenic effects of air pollution. To help fill these gaps, we used the UK Biobank, a large, prospective cohort study in the United Kingdom, to explore the relationship between air pollution and adiposity, and modification by a polygenic risk score for BMI. We used 2010 annual averages of air pollution estimates from land use regression (NO2, NOX, PM2.5, PM2.5absorbance, PM2.5-10, PM10), traffic intensity (TI), inverse distance to road (IDTR), along with examiner-measured BMI, waist-hip-ratio (WHR), and impedance measures of BF%, which were collected at enrollment (2006-2010, n = for binary measures of adiposity, with minor differences for some pollutants. Associations of NOX, NO2, PM2.5absorbance, PM2.5 and PM10, with BMI at enrollment, but not at follow-up, were stronger among individuals with higher BMI polygenic risk scores (interaction p less then 0.05). In this large, prospective cohort, air pollution was associated with several measures of adiposity at enrollment and follow-up, and associations with adiposity at enrollment were modified by a polygenic risk score for obesity. However, Gram-positive electricigens cannot be enriched well because of their thick non-conductive peptidoglycan layer. Herein, we report a new Gram-positive electricigen enrichment method by regulating the peptidoglycan layer of the bacteria using lysozyme. Lysozyme can partially hydrolyze the peptidoglycans layer of Gram-positive Firmicutes to improve the permeability of cell wall, and thus enhance its electricity generation activity. The stimulation of Gram-positive electricigen endows **** a high power generation community structure, which results in the power density 42% higher than that of the control sample. Our work has provided a new and simple method for optimizing the anode community structure by regulating weak electricigens in the community with lysozyme. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Spleen-Qi deficiency is a syndrome of traditional Chinese medicine. Panax ginseng (ginseng) is well known as the key herb for replenishing Qi and tonifying Spleen. However, the pathogenesis of Spleen-Qi deficiency syndrome and therapeutic mechanism of ginseng on Spleen-Qi deficiency constitution have not yet been entirely elucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this work was to investigate the pathogenesis of Spleen-Qi deficiency syndrome and therapeutic mechanism of ginseng on Spleen-Qi deficiency constitution. MATERIALS AND METHODS The urinary metabonomics was investigated before and after ginseng treatment in Spleen-Qi deficiency subjects by rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RRLC-QTOF-MS). The spectra of metabolites were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) and the score showed significant difference among the three different groups. The serum biochemical parameters creatine kinases (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), interferon-γ (INF-γ), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), superoxide dismutase (***) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined by assay kits.

To help fill these gaps, we used the UK Biobank, a large, prospective cohort study in the United Kingdom, to explore the relationship between air pollution and adiposity, and modification by a polygenic risk score for BMI. We used 2010 annual averages of air pollution estimates from land use regression (NO2, NOX, PM2.5, PM2.5absorbance, PM2.5-10, PM10), traffic intensity (TI), inverse distance to road (IDTR), along with examiner-measured BMI, waist-hip-ratio (WHR), and impedance measures of BF%, which were collected at enrollment (2006-2010, n = for binary measures of adiposity, with minor differences for some pollutants. Associations of NOX, NO2, PM2.5absorbance, PM2.5 and PM10, with BMI at enrollment, but not at follow-up, were stronger among individuals with higher BMI polygenic risk scores (interaction p less then 0.05). In this large, prospective cohort, air pollution was associated with several measures of adiposity at enrollment and follow-up, and associations with adiposity at enrollment were modified by a polygenic risk score for obesity. The power generation performance of a microbial fuel cell (MFC) greatly depends on the relative amount of electricigens in the anodic microbial community. Running the MFC multiple times can practically enrich the electricigens, and thus improve its power generation efficiency. However, Gram-positive electricigens cannot be enriched well because of their thick non-conductive peptidoglycan layer. Herein, we report a new Gram-positive electricigen enrichment method by regulating the peptidoglycan layer of the bacteria using lysozyme. Lysozyme can partially hydrolyze the peptidoglycans layer of Gram-positive Firmicutes to improve the permeability of cell wall, and thus enhance its electricity generation activity. The stimulation of Gram-positive electricigen endows MFCs a high power generation community structure, which results in the power density 42% higher than that of the control sample. Our work has provided a new and simple method for optimizing the anode community structure by regulating weak electricigens in the community with lysozyme. ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Spleen-Qi deficiency is a syndrome of traditional Chinese medicine. Panax ginseng (ginseng) is well known as the key herb for replenishing Qi and tonifying Spleen. However, the pathogenesis of Spleen-Qi deficiency syndrome and therapeutic mechanism of ginseng on Spleen-Qi deficiency constitution have not yet been entirely elucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY The aim of this work was to investigate the pathogenesis of Spleen-Qi deficiency syndrome and therapeutic mechanism of ginseng on Spleen-Qi deficiency constitution. MATERIALS AND METHODS The urinary metabonomics was investigated before and after ginseng treatment in Spleen-Qi deficiency subjects by rapid resolution liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (RRLC-QTOF-MS). RESULTS Studies found evidence of direct and indirect effects of smoking on various parameters, including oxidative damage, impairment of intestinal barrier and immune cell function, epigenetic and microbiota composition changes, that contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. Here, we show Uhrf2 is predominantly expressed in intestinal crypts and adenomas in **** and is transcriptionally regulated by Wnt signaling. Upregulated UHRF2 correlates with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer patients. Although loss of Uhrf2 did not affect intestinal homeostasis and regeneration, tumor initiation and progression were inhibited, leading to a dramatically prolonged life span in Uhrf2 null **** on an ApcMin background. Uhrf2 deficiency also strongly reduced primary tumor organoid formation suggesting impairment of tumor stem cells. Moreover, ablation of Uhrf2 suppressed tumor cell proliferation through downregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. Mechanistically, Uhrf2 directly interacts with and sumoylates Tcf4, a critical intranuclear effector of the Wnt pathway. Uhrf2 mediated SUMOylation stabilized Tcf4 and further sustained hyperactive Wnt signaling. Together, we demonstrate that Wnt-induced Uhrf2 expression promotes tumorigenesis through modulation of the stability of Tcf4 for maintaining oncogenic Wnt/β-catenin signaling.
