Delayed methotrexate (MTX) elimination after treatment with high-dose (HD) MTX may result in life-threatening toxicities as well as acute kidney injury. Treatment includes administration of glucarpidase, an enzyme that rapidly inactivates MTX. Dosing of glucarpidase is based on body weight; however, recommendations for dosage adjustments in obese patients are lacking. We describe three obese adult patients (BMI range 31-43 kg/m2 ) who received HD-MTX following all precautions for the treatment of HD-MTX. Although peak MTX concentrations were within the expected range (308-368 µmol/L), MTX concentrations after 24 hours or later were markedly increased (97, 52, and 19 µmol/L). Two patients experienced acute kidney failure. After a single intravenous dose of glucarpidase 4000 units (50 units/kg on the basis of ideal body weight (IBW)) was administered to each patient 38, 46, and 60 hours, respectively, after the start of MTX, MTX concentrations dropped quickly to 1.37, 0.07, and 0.03 µmol/L, respectively, and further decreased steadily. Over time, clinical status and renal function improved in all patients. Glucarpidase is a highly hydrophilic molecule with a volume of distribution of 3.6 L, representing the intravascular volume of an adult. Therefore, we used IBW for glucarpidase dose calculations, which allowed us to reduce the dose by half of the dose that would have been determined by using total body weight. This approach resulted in a rapid decrease of MTX serum concentrations and may reduce treatment costs of this highly expensive drug. This article is protected by copyright. In this review, historic and contemporary rates of vancomycin-induced kidney injury (VIKI) are described, and toxicodynamic models and mechanisms of toxicity from preclinical studies are reviewed. Yet, there are several gaps in the knowledge which may represent viable targets to make vancomycin therapy less toxic. Potential strategies include prolonging infusions and lowering maximal concentrations, administration of antioxidants, administering agents that decrease cellular accumulation, and reformulating vancomycin to alter the renal clearance mechanism. We compiled and digitized data about plant mycorrhizal colonization in nine wide-spread languages. The present version of the FungalRoot database contains 36,303 species-by-site observations for 14,870 plant species, tripling the previously available compiled information about plant mycorrhizal associations. Based on these data, we provide a recommended list of genus-level plant mycorrhizal associations, based on the majority of data for species and careful analysis of conflicting data. The majority of ectomycorrhizal and ericoid mycorrhizal plants are trees (92%) and shrubs (85%), respectively. The majority of arbuscular and non-mycorrhizal plant species are herbaceous (50% and 70%, respectively). Our publicly available database is a powerful resource for mycorrhizal scientists and ecologists. It features possibilities for dynamic updating and addition of data about plant mycorrhizal associations. The canals were divided into two groups (n=10) according to the canal preparation protocol XP-endo Shaper (XP-S) with an extra 45 seconds of instrumentation and ProTaper Next (PTN X4). The images recorded before and after preparation were evaluated for morphometric measures of volume, surface area, structure model index, and untouched walls. Published by BMJ.AIM To explore healthcare providers' perceptions and experiences of the implications of a patient data-sharing agreement between National Health Service (NHS) Digital and the Home Office on access to NHS services and quality of care received by migrant patients in England. DESIGN A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews, thematic analysis and constant-comparison approach. PARTICIPANTS Eleven healthcare providers and one non-clinical volunteer working in community or hospital-based settings who had experience of migrants accessing NHS England services. Interviews were carried out in 2018. SETTING England. RESULTS Awareness and understanding of the patient data-sharing agreement varied among participants, who associated this with a perceived lack of transparency by the government. Participants provided insight into how they thought the data-sharing agreement was negatively influencing migrants' health-seeking behaviour, their relationship with clinicians and the safety and quality of their care. They referred to the policy as a challenge to their core ethical principles, explicitly patient confidentiality and trust, which varied depending on their clinical specialty. CONCLUSIONS A perceived lack of transparency during the policy development process can result in suspicion or mistrust towards government among the health workforce, patients and public, which is underpinned by a notion of power or control. The patient data-sharing agreement was considered a threat to some of the core principles of the NHS and its implementation as adversely affecting healthcare access and patient safety. However, blinded n-of-1 trials are impractical to deliver in routine practice. Tackling Statin Intolerance using n-of-1 trials (TaSINI) will test the feasibility of a general practitioner (GP)-delivered behavioural intervention endorsing an unblinded n-of-1 trial to increase adherence to statins relative to usual care. METHODS AND ANALYSIS TaSINI is a feasibility randomised controlled trial with a nested qualitative substudy. Ninety primary care patients who have discontinued statins due to intolerance or refused treatment will be randomised to an unblinded n-of-1 trial, a blinded n-of-1 trial (positive control) or usual care (negative control). The main use of the cohort data will be to describe and explore correlates of the well-being of families of children with ID, including parents and siblings, using cross-sectional and (eventually) longitudinal analyses. The present cohort profile intends to describe the achieved cohort. PARTICIPANTS Over 1000 families of UK children with ID aged between 4 and 15 years 11 months (total n=1184) have been recruited. The mean age of the cohort was 9.01 years old. The cohort includes more boys (61.8%) than girls (27.0%; missing 11.1%). Parents reported that 45.5% (n=539) of the children have autism. Most respondents were a female primary caregiver (84.9%), and 78.0% were the biological mother of the cohort child with ID. The largest ethnic group for primary caregivers was White British (78.5%), over half were married and living with their partner (53.3%) and 39.3% were educated to degree level. FINDINGS TO DATE Data were collected on family, parental and child well-being, as well as demographic information. Wave 1 data collection took place between November 2015 and January 2017, primarily through online questionnaires. Telephone interviews were also completed by 644 primary caregivers. FUTURE PLANS Wave 2 data collection is ongoing and the research team will continue following up these families in subsequent waves, subject to funding availability. Results will be used to inform policy and practice on family and child well-being in families of children with ID. This study sought to (1) examine the relationship between Athena SWAN accreditation/awards in the UK and gender diversity of leaders and senior academics using quantitative data from 2012/2013 to 2016/2017, and (2) explore the associations between Athena SWAN awards and university performance as measured by overall scores in global ranking systems. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study based on the UK HEIs. SETTING Higher education sector in the UK provided by the Higher Education Statistics Agency. PARTICIPANTS 148 HEIs who provided employment data on female-to-male ratios (55% complete data) for each academic year between 2012/2013 and 2016/2017. Gliomas remain a group of malignant brain tumors with dismal prognosis and limited treatment options with molecular mechanisms being constantly investigated. The past decade, extracellular stress and intracellular DNA damage have been shown to disturb proteostasis leading to Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress that is implicated in the regulation of gene expression and the pathogenesis of several tumor types, including gliomas. Upon ER stress induction, neoplastic cells activate the adaptive mechanism of unfolded protein response (UPR), an integrated signaling system that either restores ER homeostasis or induces cell apoptosis. Recently, the manipulation of the UPR has emerged as a new therapeutic target in glioma treatment. General UPR activators or selective GRP78, ATF6 and PERK inducers have been detected to modulate cell proliferation and induce apoptosis of glioma cells. At the same time, target-specific UPR inhibitors and small molecule proteostasis disruptors, work in reverse to increase misfolded proteins and cause a dysregulation in protein maturation and sorting, thus preventing the growth of neoplastic cells. Herein, we discuss the pathogenic implication of ER stress in gliomas onset and progression, providing an update on the current UPR modifying agents that can be potentially used in glioma treatment. In this regard we suggest that increased activation of GSK-3 and neuronal oscillatory dysfunction are early pathological changes that may be functionally linked. Mechanistic commonalities between these disorders of cognitive dysfunction will be discussed and potential downstream targets of GSK-3 that may contribute to neuronal oscillatory dysfunction identified. The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) is increasing, but its etiology remains elusive and hence an effective treatment is not available. Previous research conducted on animal models suggests that microbiota-gut-brain axis may contribute to ASD pathology and hence more human research is needed. This study was divided into two stages, at the discovery stage, we compared the difference in gut microbiota profiles (using 16S rRNA sequencing), fecal SCFAs (using GC-MS) and plasma neurotransmitters (using UHPLC-MS/MS) of 26 children with ASD and 24 normal children. All 26 children with ASD participated in the intervention stage, and we measured the gut microbiota profiles, SCFAs and neurotransmitters before and after probiotics + FOS (n = 16) or placebo supplementation (n = 10). Gliomas remain a group of malignant brain tumors with dismal prognosis and limited treatment options with molecular mechanisms being constantly investigated. The past decade, extracellular stress and intracellular DNA damage have been shown to disturb proteostasis leading to Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress that is implicated in the regulation of gene expression and the pathogenesis of several tumor types, including gliomas. Upon ER stress induction, neoplastic cells activate the adaptive mechanism of unfolded protein response (UPR), an integrated signaling system that either restores ER homeostasis or induces cell apoptosis. Recently, the manipulation of the UPR has emerged as a new therapeutic target in glioma treatment. General UPR activators or selective GRP78, ATF6 and PERK inducers have been detected to modulate cell proliferation and induce apoptosis of glioma cells. Objectives The susceptibility of methacrylates to hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation may be a contributing factor limiting the clinical lifespan of resin composite restorations. The elimination of labile ester bonds is a potential advantage of methacrylamides, which have been shown to produce more stable restorative interfaces. The rationale of this study is to design hydrolytically and enzymatically stable adhesive monomers, with the added benefit of being able to form crosslinked networks. The objective of this study was to synthesize difunctional, hybrid methacrylate-methacrylamide monomers, and evaluate them as potential monomers for dental adhesives. Materials and methods HEMA, TEGDMA (controls) or secondary methacrylamides (HEMAM - commercially available, 2EM and 2dMM - newly synthesized) either bearing a hydroxyl group or a methacrylate functionality (Hybrids-Hy), were added at 40mass% to bisGMA. The photoinitiator system consisted of 2-dimethoxyphenyl acetophenone (DMPA) and diphenyl iodonium hexaflalues of G' and TEGDMA, 2EM, and 2dMM-Hy the lowest. The μTBS values between 48h and 6 months were statistically reduced only for the HEMA and both 2dMM materials. The formulation containing the monofunctional methacrylamide (HEMAM) showed only 9% reduction in μTBS after 6 months of aging, while the other groups showed a decrease ranging between 18% and 33%. Conclusion Overall, hybrid monomers showed lower reactivity than their analogous monofunctional versions, but had markedly lower water sorption. Shear storage modulus was affected differently by the addition of the second functionality. HEMAM-containing systems were able to maintain stable long-term dentin bond strength, which demonstrates that bonding stability is a result of the complex interplay among the factors studied. Methods 21 CaAl and 21 MgAl LDH-composite discs prepared with 0, 10 and 30wt% LDH were charged with fluoride (48h) and transferred to deionized water (DW)/artificial saliva (AS). Fluoride release/re-release was measured every 24h (ion-selective electrodes) with DW/AS replaced daily, and samples re-charged (5min) with fluoride every 2 days. Five absorption-release cycles were conducted over 10 days. CaAl and MgAl LDH rod-shaped specimens (dry and hydrated; 0, 10 and 30wt%) were studied for flexural strength and modulus. CaAl and MgAl LDH-composite discs (0, 10, 30 and 45wt% LDH) were prepared to study water uptake (over 7 weeks), water desorption (3 weeks), diffusion coefficients, solubility and cation release (ICP-OES). Results CaAl LDH and MgAl LDH-composites significantly increased the amount of fluoride released in both media (P less then 0.05). In AS, the mean release after every recharge was greater for MgAl LDH-composites compared to CaAl LDH-composites (P less then 0.05). After every recharge, the fluoride release was greater than the previous release cycle (P less then 0.05) for all LDH-composites. Physico-mechanical properties of the LDH-composites demonstrated similar values to those reported in literature. The solubility and cation release showed a linear increase with LDH loading. Cement in Group I was dual-cured without pretreatment. In Group II, the cement was dual-cured after polyacrylic acid treatment of the tooth cavity. In Groups III and IV, the cement was dual-cured after universal dentin adhesive treatment with pre-cure and co-cure methods. In Group V, the inlay was cemented in self-cure mode. After thermocycling, interfacial adaptation at the inlay-tooth interface was measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) imaging. Finally, polymerization shrinkage strain of the luting material was measured and compared. Results Interfacial adaptation differed depending on the luting material. After application of a universal adhesive, some subgroups showed improved interfacial adaptation. During surgery, no visceral injury or haemorrhagic complications were noted but there were three intraoperative bladder injuries (8.3%). Second, we show that leptin increases the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), another well-known inhibitor of STAT3, in developing hippocampal neurons. SOCS3 is also required for leptin-induced synaptogenesis and sufficient to stimulate it alone. Finally, we show that constitutively active STAT3 blocks the effects of leptin on spine formation, while the targeted knockdown of STAT3 is sufficient to induce it. Overall, our data demonstrate that leptin increases the expression of both KLF4 and SOCS3, inhibiting the activity of STAT3 in the hippocampal neurons and resulting in the enhancement of glutamatergic synaptogenesis during neonatal development.Endoparasitoid wasps inject venom along with their eggs to adjust the physiological and nutritional environment inside their hosts to benefit the development of their offspring. In particular, wasp venoms are known to modify host lipid metabolism, lipid storage in the fat body, and release of lipids into the hemolymph, but how venoms accomplish these functions remains unclear. Here, we use an UPLC-MS-based lipidomics approach to analyze the identities and concentrations of lipids in both fat body and hemolymph of host cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae) infected by the pupal endoparasitoid Pteromalus puparum. During infection, host fat body levels of highly unsaturated, soluble triacylglycerides (TAGs) increased while less unsaturated, less soluble forms decreased. Furthermore, in infected host hemolymph, overall levels of TAG and phospholipids (the major component of cell membranes) increased, suggesting that fat body cells are destroyed and their contents are dispersed. Altogether, these data suggest that wasp venom induces host fat body TAGs to be transformed into lower melting point (more liquid) forms and released into the host hemolymph following infection, allowing simple absorption and nutritional acquisition by wasp larvae. Finally, cholesteryl esters (CEs, a dietary lipid derived from cholesterol) increased in host hemolymph following infection with no concomitant decrease in host cholesterol, implying that the wasp may provide this necessary food resource to its offspring via its venom. Our aim was to explore the effects of benzalkonium chloride or hyperosmolarity exposure on the human corneal epithelial (HCE) cell lipidome, two different conditions used as in vitro models of DED. Our results demonstrated that BAK or hyperosmolarity induced important modifications in HCE lipidome including major changes in sphingolipids, glycerolipids and glycerophospholipids. Matricryptins contribute to the regulation of inflammatory, reparative, and fibrogenic cascades through effects on several different cell types both in acute and chronic settings. Fibroblasts play a major role in matricryptin generation not only as the main cellular source of ECM proteins, but also as producers of matrix-degrading proteases. Moreover, several matricryptins exert fibrogenic or reparative actions by modulating fibroblast phenotype and function. This review manuscript focuses on the mechanisms of matricyptin generation in injured and remodeling tissues with an emphasis on fibroblast-matricryptin interactions.
Second, we show that leptin increases the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3), another well-known inhibitor of STAT3, in developing hippocampal neurons. SOCS3 is also required for leptin-induced synaptogenesis and sufficient to stimulate it alone. Finally, we show that constitutively active STAT3 blocks the effects of leptin on spine formation, while the targeted knockdown of STAT3 is sufficient to induce it. Here, we use an UPLC-MS-based lipidomics approach to analyze the identities and concentrations of lipids in both fat body and hemolymph of host cabbage butterfly (Pieris rapae) infected by the pupal endoparasitoid Pteromalus puparum. During infection, host fat body levels of highly unsaturated, soluble triacylglycerides (TAGs) increased while less unsaturated, less soluble forms decreased. Furthermore, in infected host hemolymph, overall levels of TAG and phospholipids (the major component of cell membranes) increased, suggesting that fat body cells are destroyed and their contents are dispersed. Altogether, these data suggest that wasp venom induces host fat body TAGs to be transformed into lower melting point (more liquid) forms and released into the host hemolymph following infection, allowing simple absorption and nutritional acquisition by wasp larvae. Finally, cholesteryl esters (CEs, a dietary lipid derived from cholesterol) increased in host hemolymph following infection with no concomitant decrease in host cholesterol, implying that the wasp may provide this necessary food resource to its offspring via its venom. Currently, little data are available regarding lipid metabolism alteration in ocular surface epithelial cells in the course of DED. Our aim was to explore the effects of benzalkonium chloride or hyperosmolarity exposure on the human corneal epithelial (HCE) cell lipidome, two different conditions used as in vitro models of DED. For this purpose, we performed a lipidomic analysis using UPLC-HRMS-ESI+/-. Our results demonstrated that BAK or hyperosmolarity induced important modifications in HCE lipidome including major changes in sphingolipids, glycerolipids and glycerophospholipids. For both exposures, an increase in ceramide was especially exhibited. Hyperosmolarity specifically induced triglyceride accumulation resulting in lipid droplet formation. Furthermore, the high-, intermediate-, and low-dose TF groups were intragastrically given TF at a dose of 200, 100 and 50 mg/kg, respectively. After 10 weeks, the rats were sacrificed, and blood and liver samples were collected. Further, multiple localized LSSVR models are constructed to characterize the various dynamic relationships between quality and process variables for local regions, while the grid search (GS) and ten-fold cross-validation methods are introduced to parameter optimization for each local model. Finally, the posterior probability for each test sample with respect to different phases can be estimated by Bayesian inference strategy, and local outputs are integrated to produce the final quality prediction results. Feasibility and superiority of the proposed soft sensor are validated through a case study for penicillin fermentation process. It can achieve satisfactory prediction accuracy and effectively tackle nonlinear and multi-phase modeling problems in chemical and biological processes.High-density urban habitats provide a hotbed for the rapid spread of infectious diseases. This paper aims at investigating the transmission of influenza-like-illness within households with a school child using a survey study of fourth grade elementary school students in Shanghai, China. We found that the pairwise transmission probability within a household is only 0.172, which implies that the average number of infections caused by a single infectious individual in a household in Shanghai is only 0.304. Thus, the majority of transmission must occur outside of a household for a disease to cause an outbreak.Here we study how the structure and growth of a cellular population vary with the distribution of maturation times from each stage. We consider two cell cycle stages. The first represents early G1. The second includes late G1, S, G2, and mitosis. Passage between the two reflects passage of an important cell cycle checkpoint known as the restriction point. We model the population as a system of partial differential equations. After establishing the existence of solutions, we characterize the maturation rates and derive the steady-state age and stage distributions as well as the asymptotic growth rates for models with exponential and inverse Gaussian maturation time distributions. We find that the stable age and stage distributions, transient dynamics, and asymptotic growth rates are substantially different for these two maturation models. We conclude that researchers modeling cellular populations should take care when choosing a maturation time distribution, as the population growth rate and stage structure can be heavily impacted by this choice. Heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, respiratory parameters and the incidence of complications related to ProSeal laryngeal mask airway (PLMA) and endotracheal tube (ETT) were collected in clinical experiments in order to evaluate the operation condition. On the basis of this experiment, at first, expert credibility is introduced to process the index value; secondly, the classification weight of the index is objectively determined by the information entropy output of the index itself; finally, a comprehensive classification model of support vector machine based on key sample set is proposed and its advantages are evaluated. Result After classifying the experimental data, we found that SVM can accurately judge the effect of surgery by data. In this experiment, PLMA method is better than ETT method in xenon repair operation. Discussion SVM has great accuracy and practicability in judging the outcome of xenon repair operation. Conclusion The proposed index classification weight model can deal with the uncertainties caused by uncertain information and give the confidence of the uncertain information. Compared with the traditional SVM method, the proposed method based on SVM and key sample set greatly reduces the number of samples that misjudge the effect of samples, and improves the practicability of SVM method. It is concluded that PLMA is superior to the ETT technique to hernia surgical. The idea of constructing classification model based on key sample set proposed in this paper can also be used for reference in other data mining methods.

Consumption of alcohol and new psychoactive substances (NPS) in a population or during special events (music festivals) is usually monitored through individual questionnaires, forensic and toxicological data, and drug seizures. However, consumption estimates have some biases due mostly to the unknown composition of drug pills for NPS and stockpiling for alcohol. The aim of this study was to evaluate for the first time the real use of alcohol and the occurrence of NPS in Slovakia by wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE). Urban wastewater samples were collected from nine Slovak cities over two years (2017-2018) and during three music festivals. The study included about 20% of the Slovak population and 50 000 festival attendees. The urinary alcohol biomarker ethyl sulfate (EtS) and thirty NPS were analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC - MS/MS). EtS concentrations were used for estimating the per capita alcohol consumption in each city. The average alcohol consumption in the selected cities and festivals in 2017-2018 ranged between 7 and 126 L/day/1000 inhabitants and increased during the weekends and music festivals. Five NPS belonging to the classes of synthetic cathinones (mephedrone, methcathinone, buphedrone and pentedrone) and phenethylamines (25-iP-NBoMe) were found in the low ng/L range. Methcathinone was the most frequently detected NPS, while the highest normalized mass load corresponded to mephedrone (3.1 mg/day/1000 inhabitants). The highest concentrations are found in the North, Center and Lisbon regions, mostly comprised of consumer products, fishing gear and microplastics ( less then 5 mm), especially fragments and pellets. This contamination has resulted in ingestion of plastics by organisms, including mussels, fishes, birds and turtles. Thus, every Portuguese citizen may consume 1440 microplastics a year based on the consumption of mollusks. Awareness campaigns, improvements in waste management and reductions in the release of untreated wastewater are recommended measures to reduce plastic pollution in Portugal.Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a worldwide concern due to its biotoxicity. Because Cd and Fe are closely associated during plant photosynthesis, this study aims at investigating the mechanism governing Cd toxicity during photosynthetic primary reaction in rice by adjusting Fe concentration. The results show that moderate Fe concentration (1.0 g kg-1) added to soil can increase the stomatal conductance (Gs) and SPAD value by stimulating the stomatal opening and chlorophyll synthesis. Moderate Fe concentration can also improve the maximum fluorescence (Fm) and the maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) to keep the high reaction center activity and electronic transfer efficiency in photosystems I and II. Thus, moderate Fe can eliminate Cd-induced decrease in Gs, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) as well as the disorder of antioxidative system under Cd concentration of 2.0 mg kg-1 in the soil. When its application is increased to 2.0 g kg-1, Fe can notably decrease Pn, and result in remarkable decrease in the biomass of shoots and grains. Decrease in Pn can be mainly attributed to high Fe concentration which can greatly destroy chloroplast structure and, meanwhile, inhibit the electron transfer between acceptor and donator in photosynthetic chain especially from quinone A (QA) to quinone B (QB). Unlike the situation under moderate Fe concentration, the high Fe application cannot mitigate the Cd-induced decrease in photosynthetic index. Our results indicate that the moderate Fe application is necessary to promote rice performance and production and, in the meantime, to inhibit Cd toxicity in the extensively polluted soils.As an effective neonicotinoid insecticide, imidacloprid (IMI) has been widely used in crop production, but its residue affects normal plant growth. Selenium (Se) is a non-essential mineral nutrient in higher plants, that acts as the active centre of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), which removes harmful peroxides. In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which selenium improves the growth status of IMI-treated garlic plants through analyses of apparent morphology and antioxidant enzyme activity as well as the dynamic changes in nutrients and metabolites in the plants. The results showed that 80 μg/kg Na2SeO3 had a strong effect on alleviating the damage in garlic plants exposed to IMI (1.2 mg/kg) by increasing the absorption of mineral elements to enhance the synthesis of chlorophyll and antioxidant enzymes. A nontarget metabolomics analysis based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) indicated that the addition of Na2SeO3 to IMI-treated garlic could reconstruct the plant metabolic distribution by enhancing the nitrogen and indole metabolism, maintaining lower concentrations of secondary metabolites and maintaining the balance of the plant energy metabolism. Our study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms by which garlic plants responds to IMI exposure and suggests the use of selenium with IMI-contaminated plants as a solution for the advancement of sustainable agricultural pesticide use.Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water from Xiongan New Area was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), simultaneous with its risk assessment. The optimal extraction conditions, derivatization factors (such as derivation reagent amount, derivatization time and temperature), and dissolution solvent were determined by orthogonal experiment. These results indicated the optimum derivatization time and temperature were 70 °C and 30 min, respectively, whilst the amount of derivatization reagent (N,O-bis (trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide) was 40 μL. The optimum extraction efficiency was obtained when using the mixture of hexane-dichloromethane (11, vv) with salt concentration of 6 g/L. Using the sample of S9 as control, the recovery experiments were performed with three different spiked levels. The water samples of Baiyang Lake and Fuhe river were analyzed using the optimized conditions. Those results showed that the concentrations of TBBPA in samples ranged from 18.5 ng/L to 82.6 ng/L, which lies in the middle level of data previously published from other areas in China.

Awareness campaigns, improvements in waste management and reductions in the release of untreated wastewater are recommended measures to reduce plastic pollution in Portugal.Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a worldwide concern due to its biotoxicity. Because Cd and Fe are closely associated during plant photosynthesis, this study aims at investigating the mechanism governing Cd toxicity during photosynthetic primary reaction in rice by adjusting Fe concentration. The results show that moderate Fe concentration (1.0 g kg-1) added to soil can increase the stomatal conductance (Gs) and SPAD value by stimulating the stomatal opening and chlorophyll synthesis. Moderate Fe concentration can also improve the maximum fluorescence (Fm) and the maximal photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) to keep the high reaction center activity and electronic transfer efficiency in photosystems I and II. Thus, moderate Fe can eliminate Cd-induced decrease in Gs, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) and net photosynthetic rate (Pn) as well as the disorder of antioxidative system under Cd concentration of 2.0 mg kg-1 in the soil. When its application is increased to 2.0 g kg-1, Fe can notably decrease Pn, and result in remarkable decrease in the biomass of shoots and grains. Decrease in Pn can be mainly attributed to high Fe concentration which can greatly destroy chloroplast structure and, meanwhile, inhibit the electron transfer between acceptor and donator in photosynthetic chain especially from quinone A (QA) to quinone B (QB). Unlike the situation under moderate Fe concentration, the high Fe application cannot mitigate the Cd-induced decrease in photosynthetic index. Our results indicate that the moderate Fe application is necessary to promote rice performance and production and, in the meantime, to inhibit Cd toxicity in the extensively polluted soils.As an effective neonicotinoid insecticide, imidacloprid (IMI) has been widely used in crop production, but its residue affects normal plant growth. Selenium (Se) is a non-essential mineral nutrient in higher plants, that acts as the active centre of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), which removes harmful peroxides. In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which selenium improves the growth status of IMI-treated garlic plants through analyses of apparent morphology and antioxidant enzyme activity as well as the dynamic changes in nutrients and metabolites in the plants. The results showed that 80 μg/kg Na2SeO3 had a strong effect on alleviating the damage in garlic plants exposed to IMI (1.2 mg/kg) by increasing the absorption of mineral elements to enhance the synthesis of chlorophyll and antioxidant enzymes. A nontarget metabolomics analysis based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) indicated that the addition of Na2SeO3 to IMI-treated garlic could reconstruct the plant metabolic distribution by enhancing the nitrogen and indole metabolism, maintaining lower concentrations of secondary metabolites and maintaining the balance of the plant energy metabolism. Our study provides novel insights into the molecular mechanisms by which garlic plants responds to IMI exposure and suggests the use of selenium with IMI-contaminated plants as a solution for the advancement of sustainable agricultural pesticide use.Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water from Xiongan New Area was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), simultaneous with its risk assessment. The optimal extraction conditions, derivatization factors (such as derivation reagent amount, derivatization time and temperature), and dissolution solvent were determined by orthogonal experiment. These results indicated the optimum derivatization time and temperature were 70 °C and 30 min, respectively, whilst the amount of derivatization reagent (N,O-bis (trimethylsilyl) trifluoroacetamide) was 40 μL. The optimum extraction efficiency was obtained when using the mixture of hexane-dichloromethane (11, vv) with salt concentration of 6 g/L. Individuals who were more susceptible to attentional capture also produced larger AREs. These results confirm the existence of links between task-set contingent attentional capture and AREs. They also provide the first direct demonstration of the attentional nature of these effects with online brain activity measures perceptual repulsion arises as the result of prior feature-guided attention shifts to specific locations in the visual field.Our visual system uses the disparity between the images received by the two eyes to judge three-dimensional distance to surfaces. We can measure this ability by having subjects discriminate the disparity of rendered surfaces. We wanted to know the basis of the individual differences in this ability. We tested 53 adults with normal vision using a relative disparity detection task. Targets were wedge-shaped surfaces formed from random dots. These were presented in either crossed or uncrossed disparity relative to a random dot background. The threshold disparity ranged from 24 arc seconds in the most-able subject to 275 arc seconds in the least-able subject. There was a small advantage for detecting crossed-disparity targets. We used the noise-masking paradigm to partition subject performance into two factors. These were the subject's equivalent internal noise and their processing efficiency. The parameters were estimated by fitting the linear amplifier model. We found both factors contributed to the individual differences in stereoacuity. Within subjects, those showing an advantage for one disparity direction had enhanced efficiency for that direction. Some subjects had a higher equivalent internal noise for one direction that was balanced out by an increased efficiency. Our approach provides a more thorough account of the stereo-ability of our subjects compared with measuring thresholds alone. We present a normative set of results that can be compared with clinical populations.In the dual-stream model of language processing, the exact connectivity of the ventral stream to the anterior temporal lobe remains elusive. To investigate the connectivity between the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the lateral part of the temporal and parietal lobes, we integrated spatiotemporal profiles of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) recorded intraoperatively in 14 patients who had undergone surgical resection for a brain tumor or epileptic focus. Four-dimensional visualization of the combined CCEP data showed that the pars opercularis (Broca's area) is connected to the posterior temporal cortices and the supramarginal gyrus, whereas the pars orbitalis is connected to the anterior lateral temporal cortices and angular gyrus. Quantitative topographical analysis of CCEP connectivity confirmed an anterior-posterior gradient of connectivity from IFG stimulus sites to the temporal response sites. Reciprocality analysis indicated that the anterior part of the IFG is bidirectionally connected to the temporal or parietal area. This study shows that each IFG subdivision has different connectivity to the temporal lobe with an anterior-posterior gradient and supports the classical connectivity concept of Dejerine; that is, the frontal lobe is connected to the temporal lobe through the arcuate fasciculus and also a double fan-shaped structure anchored at the limen insulae. © The Author(s) 2020. Early detection and effective management of HTN has demonstrated significant reductions in mortality, morbidity rate, and healthcare costs. As physical therapy practice advances to a more independent care model, physical therapists may serve as the first point of contact into the healthcare system, thereby necessitating a need for routine blood pressure (BP) monitoring. This is especially relevant in the outpatient physical therapy practice setting, where there is evidence for elevated BP measures among patients, yet omission of routine screening in this setting is well documented. Leading physical therapy professional organizations include statements in their guidelines that suggest that physical therapists have a duty to provide a standard of care which protects the safety and optimizes the overall health of patients under their care. Therefore, it is imperative not only that physical therapists include BP examination into routine practice protocols, but that the knowledge and skills to accurately measure and interpret BP at rest and during exercise be integrated into the standard of care. Evaluation during admission revealed severe hypokalemia with serum potassium level 1.3mEq/l and high serum Triiodothyronine (>20.00µg/L) and low serum Thyroid Stimulating Hormone ( less then 0.01µg/L). Potassium supplements resolved muscle weakness and the patient was restarted with anti-thyroid drugs. Hence, hypokalemic paralysis is a reversible cause of paralysis and high index of suspicion as well as timely interventions are required to prevent potential harm. We report a case of 70-year-old female with systemic sclerosis presented with pain along with swelling over multiple joints since 18 months which exacerbated since last 6 months and wound over finger tips since last 2 weeks. We present here other various signs, investigations and management of this uncommon disease systemic sclerosis, also known as scleroderma. Various systems are evident to be involved including cardiac (left ventricular diastolic dysfunction) and peripheral vascular system (Raynaud's phenomenon). All the girl students from grade 8, 9 and 10 were included into the study. Data were entered and calculations were using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20. RESULTS Among 184 adolescent girls, 156 (84.8%) were aware about the menstrual hygiene and most of them 176 (95.7%) knew about the criteria of ideal absorbent to be used during menstruation.
