It is a synthetic plant hormone auxin employed in many crops including rice, wheat, sorghum, sugar cane, and corn to control wide leaf weeds. The indiscriminate use of pesticides can produce numerous damages to the environment. Therefore, this review has the objective to provide an overview on the main characteristics of the herbicides based on 2,4-D, mostly on the role of microorganisms in its degradation and its main degradation metabolite, 2,4- dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). The remediation processes carried out by microorganisms are advantageous to avoid the pollution of the environment as well as to safeguard the population health.Urinary benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) can be used as a reliable biomarker of exposure to these pollutants. This cross-sectional study aimed to employ biomonitoring to assess BTEX exposure among South Pars Gas Field (SPGF) workers in Assaluyeh, Iran. Forty employees who were working on the site were recruited as the case group. Besides, 31 administrative employees were recruited as the control group. Pre-shift and post-shift spot urine samples were collected from the subjects in the case group, while the subjects in the control group provided mid-morning urine samples. Overall, 111 urine samples, including 80 samples from the case group and 31 samples from the controls, were collected. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was used to determine the urinary levels of BTEX compounds. The median urinary levels of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, and o-xylene in the post-shift samples of the exposed group were 1.24, 2.28, 0.5, 1.32, and 1.5 μg/l, respectively. Significant differences were observed in urinary BTEX levels among smokers and non-smokers in both studied groups (p  less then  0.05). Accordingly, the median urinary BTEX concentrations in smokers were 2 to 6.5 times higher than the corresponding values in non-smoker subjects. Smoking status was the only predictor of the urinary BTEX concentration. Our findings revealed that refinery workers are exposed to significant levels of BTEX compounds. Considering the health risks associated with BTEX exposure for refinery workers, implementation of suitable control strategies, such as using appropriate personal protective equipment and improving on-site ventilation systems, are recommended reducing their exposure to BTEX via the inhalation.Carbon dioxide (CO2) is mainly universal greenhouse gas associated with climate change. Climate change adversely influences human health to cause numerous diseases due to their direct association with climate change. This review highlights the different anthropogenic GHG emission sources, the response of microbial communities to climate change, climate forcing potential, and mitigation strategies through different agricultural management approaches and microbial communities.Electrokinetic (EK) remediation combined with in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) can be applied to low permeability organic contaminated soil. However, the effects of electrode configuration on EK-oxidation remediation remain unclear. In this study, EK-ISCO remediation of real polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil under different electrode configurations was conducted. The results showed that increasing the number of anodes and electrode pairs in one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) electrode configuration was conducive to migration of oxidants into the system. The change in soil pH after remediation in 2D electrode configuration was not obvious, but the increase of soil electrical conductivity (EC) was higher than that of the 1D electrode configuration. The removal rates of PAHs in 2D electrode configurations (35.9-40.9%) were relatively higher than those of the 1D electrode configurations (0.54-31.6%), and the hexagonal electrode configuration yielded the highest pollutant removal efficiency, reaching 40.9%. The energy consumption under 2D electrode configuration was smaller than that under 1D electrode configuration, and the energy consumption of per gram removed PAHs in the hexagon configuration (66.74 kWh (g PAHs)-1) was lowest in all electrode configurations. Overall, the results of this study suggest that 2D electrode configuration is better than 1D and hexagonal electrode configuration is an optimal electrode configuration.Increasing urbanization and anthropogenic activities of the last couple of decades have left significant amounts of plastic debris in both coastal and marine ecosystems. In this study, we estimated the abundance of microplastics (particle size less then 5 mm) in the beach sediments of southernmost India at Kanyakumari by collecting sediments from harbors, coastal fishing villages/residential beaches, tourist beaches, and undisturbed coastal areas along the Indian Ocean. We recovered 343 particles (67% fiber and 33% fragment) from eight different stations by evaluating 50 g dry sediments (d.s.) from each location. All of them were secondary microplastics and most of them (i.e., 331 out of 343 particles) were transparent. Tourist beaches had the highest concentration (150 particles/50 g d.s.), followed by the harbors (99 particles/50 g d.s.). The undisturbed beach contained the least amount of microplastics, representing only 4.3% of the total recovered particles. Our study relates the abundance of microplastics to different degrees of anthropogenic activities.

  • During the past few decades, contamination of sediments by persistent toxic substances (PTSs) has been observed in estuarine and coastal areas on the west coast of South Korea. The contaminants are suspected to cause toxicities in aquatic biota, but little is known about their ecological effects, particularly on benthic microbial communities. In this study, an eDNA-based assessment was applied along with classic assessments of exposure, such as chemistry and in vitro bioassays, to evaluate condition of benthic bacterial communities subjected to PTSs. Two strategies were adopted for the study. One was to conduct a comprehensive assessment in space (by comparing seawater and freshwater sites at five coastal regions) and in time (by following change over a 5-y period). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/Adrucil(Fluorouracil).html Although we found that bacterial composition varied among and within years, some phyla, such as Proteobacteria (28.7%), Actinobacteria (13.1%), Firmicutes (12.7%), and Chloroflexi (12.5%) were consistently dominated across the study regions. Numerous studies have reported that the antifungal activity of sourdough is mainly correlated with the presence of lactic (LA) and acetic acid (AA), but very few information is available on the effect of undissociated acid concentrations in the aqueous phase of bread (CHA; mmole/L). This study was conducted to provide additional information about the mode of action of the acids in sourdough bread, enabling a better shelf-life prediction. This study was divided into two parts. In part 1, three industrial biological sourdoughs were characterized (dough yield, pH, aw, fermentation quotient, microbiota). During 7 weeks, a shelf-life test with natural flora was conducted with daily checks of visible mould growth (21 °C). In part 2, the effect of the acids present in the antifungal active sourdough breads was validated in chemically acidified wheat breads. Complete growth inhibition was observed in full-baked sourd moisture content. Foodborne illnesses affect the health of consumers worldwide, and thus searching for potential antimicrobial agents against foodborne pathogens is given an increased focus. This research evaluated the influence of sodium lactate (SL), encapsulated (e) and unencapsulated (u) polyphosphates (PP; sodium tripolyphosphate, STP; sodium acid pyrophosphate, SPP), and their combinations on Salmonella Typhimurium, Escherichia coli O157H7 and Staphylococcus aureus growth in cooked ground beef during 30 day storage at 4 or 10 °C. pH, water activity (aw), oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and S. Typhimurium, E. coli O157H7 and S. aureus counts were determined. S. Typhimurium was not found in SPP-SL combination groups after 30 day storage at 4 °C (P  less then 0.05). Lower S. Typhimurium levels were determined in only SL containing groups stored at 10 °C than group with only tested microorganism (MO, P  less then  0.05). Although there was no change in S. Typhimurium load in all SL incorporated groups during 10 °C storagnd control (P  less then  0.05). The lowest aw was generally obtained in all SL containing groups at both storage temperatures (P  less then  0.05). Lower ORP was determined in all PP incorporated groups during storage at both temperatures compared to others (P  less then  0.05). ORP in all treatments generally increased (P  less then  0.05) during storage at both storage temperatures. This study showed that encapsulation is not a factor affecting antimicrobial efficiency of PP and using PP-SL combinations have synergistic effect on reducing the viability of S. Typhimurium, E. coli O157H7 and S. aureus and their subsequent growth ability in cooked ground beef. V.Herein, we communicate our recent medicinal chemistry efforts which have culminated in a series of PI3Kδ/γ dual inhibitors structurally featuring a seven-membered spirocyclic spacer. Compound 26, the most potent one among them, exhibited superior PI3Kδ inhibitory activity (IC50 = 1.0 nM) to that of the approved PI3Kδ inhibitor Idelalisib. Besides, it exerted remarkable anti-proliferative efficacy against human malignant B-cell line SU-DHL-6 with GI50 value of 33 nM. The biochemical assay against the other three class I PI3K isoforms identified compound 26 as a potent PI3Kδ/γ dual inhibitor with considerable selectivity over PI3Kα and PI3Kβ. In SU-DHL-6 cells, a dramatic down-regulation of PI3K signaling was observed following compound 26-treatment at the concentration as low as 10 nM. Inspiringly, the pharmacokinetic (PK) study in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats revealed it was orally available with a favorable bioavailability (F = 87.5%). Overall, compound 26, a promising PI3Kδ/γ dual inhibitor, has the potential to emerge as a clinical candidate for the treatment of leukocyte-mediated malignancies after extensive functional investigation. The Feed and Wrap (F + W) technique is a method that has been used successfully in infants for scans of other parts of the body, but has not been properly studied in MRI scans performed for hearing loss. The primary aim was to evaluate the diagnostic success rate of a newly introduced Feed and Wrap MRI scanning protocol used for assessment of sensorineural hearing loss in infants at Western Australia's Tertiary Paediatric hospital over the last three years. The secondary aims were to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this technique and to review the available published literature on this technique and compare it to our case series. METHODS All F + W MRI scans performed for the investigation of congenital hearing loss between 2016 and 2019 at the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women and Perth Children's Hospital were retrospectively reviewed.

    Machine learning (ML)-based stroke risk stratification systems have typically focused on conventional risk factors (CRF) (AtheroRisk-conventional). Besides CRF, carotid ultrasound image phenotypes (CUSIP) have shown to be powerful phenotypes risk stratification. This is the first ML study of its kind that integrates CUSIP and CRF for risk stratification (AtheroRisk-integrated) and compares against AtheroRisk-conventional.

Logistic regression approach was used to select the significant features on which the RF classifier was trained. The performance of both ML systems was evaluated by area-under-the-curve (AUC) statistics computed using a leave-one-out cross-validation protocol.

    Left and right common carotid arteries of 202 Japanese patients were retrospectively examined to obtain 404 ultrasound scans. RF classifier showed higher improvement in AUC (~57%) for leave-one-out cross-validation protocol. Using RF classifier, AUC statistics for AtheroRisk-integrated system was higher (AUC=0.99,p-value<0.001) compared to AtheroRisk-conventional (AUC=0.63,p-value<0.001).

Improvement in net atrioventricular compliance (Cn), one of the major determinants of above factors is not routinely assessed. Aim of present study was to assess the change in Cn after successful BMV and its correlation with above factors.

    50 patients of very severe mitral stenosis in sinus rhythm who underwent successful BMV have been studied. NYHA FC, 6min walk test (6MWT) and echocardiographic evaluation was done 24h before and at 2 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks after BMV.     To study the immediate maternal and fetal outcomes and long term maternal outcomes in pregnant women undergoing balloon mitral valvotomy.

    We retrospectively analyzed balloon mitral valvotomy during pregnancy performed between January 2008 and July 2018.

    BMV was carried out in 97 pregnant women with mean age of 26.1±4.5 years, at mean gestational age of 23.1±4.6 weeks. The procedure was successful in 95 patients (97.9%). There was one maternal death post procedure due to intra-uterine death and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Adverse immediate fetal outcome was seen in 2 cases with one intra-uterine fetal demise and one preterm labour. Mitral valve area increased from mean of 0.82±0.12cm to 1.66±0.14cm (p<0.001). Mean trans-mitral diastolic gradient decreased from 19.7±5.6mm Hg to 7.5±2mm Hg. Right ventricular systolic pressure decreased significantly from mean of 56.7±16.2mm Hg to mean of 35.6±11mm Hg. Survival analysis showed cumulative event free survival of 89% at 5 years and 65% at 10 years, considering a composite endpoint of clinical restenosis, repeat BMV or MVR or cardiovascular death.

    There is a lack of sufficient data regarding the protective effects of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) in patients at risk of developing contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). Thus, this study was conducted to determine whether RIPC as an adjunct to standard therapy prevents CIN in high-risk patients undergoing coronary intervention.

    In a single-center, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, 162 patients who were at risk of CIN received standard hydration combined with RIPC or hydration with sham preconditioning. RIPC was accomplished by four cycles of 5min ischemia and 5min reperfusion of the forearm.   • Efficiencies of artificial photosynthetic and photocatalytic systems depend on their ability to generate long-lived charge-separated (CS) states in photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions. PET, in most cases, is followed by an ultrafast **** electron transfer, which severely reduces lifetime and quantum yield of CS states. Generation of a long-lived CS state is an important goal in the study of PET reactions. Herein, we report that this goal is achieved using a hierarchically self-assembled anthracene-methyl viologen donor-acceptor system. Anthracene linked to two β-cyclodextrin molecules (CD-AN-CD) and methyl viologen linked to two adamantane units (AD-MV2+-AD) form an inclusion complex in water, which further self-assembled into well-defined toroidal nanostructures. The fluorescence of anthracene is highly quenched in the self-assembled system because of PET from anthracene to methyl viologen. Irradiation of the aqueous toroidal solution led to formation of a long-lived CS state. Rational mechanisms for the formation of the toroidal nanostructures and long-lived photoinduced charge separation are presented in the paper.There is growing interest in creating solids that are responsive to various stimuli. Herein we report the first molecular-level mechanistic picture of the thermochromic polymorphic transition in a series of MAN-NI dyad crystals that turn from orange to yellow upon heating with minimal changes to the microscopic morphology following the transition. The overall process is critically dependent on a complex interplay between the layered structure of the starting crystal, the thermodynamics of the two differently colored forms, and similar densities of the two polymorphs. Upon heating, the orange form alkyl chain layers become disordered, allowing for some lateral diffusion of dyads within their own layer. By utilizing low laser energy and high lateral spatial resolution imaging (10 μm), depth profiling can be observed while maintaining laterally resolved information, resulting in a three-dimensional MSI approach that would complement existing OLED characterization methods.We demonstrate that halogenated methane (HM) two-dimensional (2D)-terahertz-terahertz-Raman (2D-TTR) spectra are determined by the complicated structure of the instrument response function (IRF) along ω1 and by the molecular coherences along ω2. Experimental improvements have helped increase the resolution and dynamic range of the measurements, including accurate THz pulse shape characterization. Sum-frequency excitations convolved with the IRF are found to quantitatively reproduce the 2D-TTR signal. Imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) is a powerful technique to comprehensively elucidate the spatial distribution patterns of lipids, peptides, and proteins in biological tissue sections. In this work, we demonstrate an application of multimodal chemical imaging using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), which provided comprehensive molecular information in situ within the same mouse heart tissue sections with myocardial infarction. MALDI-IMS (at 30 μm per pixel) revealed infarct-associated spatial alterations of several lipid species of sphingolipids, glycerophospholipids, lysophospholipids, and cardiolipins along with the acyl carnitines. Further, we performed multimodal MALDI-IMS (IMS3) where dual polarity lipid imaging was combined with subsequent protein MALDI-IMS analysis (at 30 μm per pixel) within the same tissue sections, which revealed accumulations of core histone proteins H4, H2A, and H2B along with post-translational modification products, acetylated H4 and H2A, on the borders of the infarcted region. This methodology allowed us to interpret the lipid and protein molecular pathology of the very same infarcted region in a mouse model of myocardial infarction.     The discovery of neural precursor cells (NPCs) and the concomitant intensive research in the field offer regenerative medicine novel approaches, enabling it to tackle conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases.     Acute herpes zoster (AHZ) is a common skin disease caused by invasion of the varicella zoster virus into the ganglia and skin, and the severe pain is the most complaint, which can seriously disturb the normal life of patients. Fire needle plus cupping is a special acupuncture treatment, which is widely used to treat AHZ for its better analgesic effect in China although it has not been fully verified by rigorous randomized controlled trial (RCT).

    To test the effect, a three-arm randomized parallel controlled trial protocol has been designed. A total of 105 AHZ patients suffering pain will be randomly divided into three groups in an equal proportion. The interventions are fire needle plus cupping (FC) in group A, famciclovir plus gabapentin (FG) in group B, and fire needle plus cupping plus famciclovir (FCF) in group C. The length for the trial is set for a week time frame. Precisely speaking, the A group (FC) is to carry out 1 treatment per day for the total of 7 treatment sessions within 1 week period. On stage, the participants are to be followed up for postherpetic neuralgia.

    The results of this trial aim to provide sufficient evidence on FC treatment over both FG and FCF treatments. It will then give a credible alternative treatment to cut down acute pain and to cure AHZ infection.

    Relocation to a long-term care (LTC) facility is a major life change for most elderly people. Following relocation, many elderly experience difficulties in adapting to changes in the living environment. Taiwan is increasingly becoming an "aging society" and the numbers of those who relocate from family residences to long-term residential care facilities have increased over years. However, in-depth evidence on the experiences of the elderly of their stay in LTC facilities in Taiwan is relatively sparse. This study aimed to explore the relocation experiences of the elderly to a LTC facility to inform policy and practice to address their needs effectively.

    A qualitative study, using semi-structured in-depth interviews, was conducted to explore the experiences of 16 elderly people who have relocated to and lived in a LTC facility in Taiwan for up to a period of 12 months. All interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using grounded theory approach.

    Participants' accounts reflected four interrelatemotions, feelings and experiences. Adaptation of the elderly into the LTC facility can be maximized if the relocation is well planned with provisions for individually tailored care and family involvement.

After matching, 62,578 individuals were eligible for analysis. For the statistical analyses, we used Cox regression models and adjusted for severe migraine cases.
    Our findings support the hypothesis that migraine is a midlife risk factor for dementia in later life. The higher rate of dementia in individuals with a hospital-based diagnosis of migraine with aura emphasizes the need for studies on pathological mechanisms and potential preventative measures. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 419 patients recently diagnosed with coronary heart disease (myocardial infarction or angina) who participated in the National Health Survey in Spain (2018). Unhealthy behaviors were defined according to the European Guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention. Only 1% of patients reported no unhealthy behaviors, with 11% reporting one, 40% two, 35% three, and 13% four or more unhealthy behaviors. In cooperation with the Madagascan Ministry of Health, this study aims to elicit the perceptions, experiences, and recommendations of key stakeholders in relation to a MHW amid a pilot study in 31 state-funded health care facilities. We conducted a two-stage qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews with stakeholders (N = 21) representing the following groups community representatives, health care providers, health officials and representatives from phone provider companies. Interviews were conducted in Atsimondrano and Renivohitra districts, between November and December of 2017. Data was coded thematically using inductive and deductive approaches, and found to align with a social ecological model. Key facilitators for successful implementation of the MHW, include (i) close collaboration with existing communal structures and (ii) creation of an incentive scheme to reward pregnant women to save. Key barriers to the application of the MHW in the study zone include (i) disruption of informal benefits for health care providers related to the current cash-based payment system, (ii) low mobile phone ownership, (iii) illiteracy among the target population, and (iv) failure of the MHW to overcome essential access barriers towards institutional health care services such as fear of unpredictable expenses. The MHW was perceived as a potential solution to reduce disparities in access to maternal health care. To ensure success of the MHW, direct demand-side and provider-side financial incentives merit consideration.PURPOSE The purpose was to explore the exercise behavior of the Taiwanese population during leisure time and to examine the gender differences in related influential factors. METHODS The Leisure Time and Sport Questionnaire (LTSQ) conducted by the Academia Sinica in 2007 was used for analysis. Participants were drawn from the Taiwanese population aged over 18 years old. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to test the association between the frequency of exercise and related factors in all the participants, male, and female participants, respectively. RESULTS In the total 2,147 participants, 47.8% reported they regularly exercised, 34.1% irregularly exercised, and 18.1% never exercised. There were no significant gender differences in the frequency of exercise, but a significant gender difference was found in the types of exercise most often practiced. Participants in one of following conditions, over 65 and under 40 years old, living in the city, having higher education levels, having a spouse or partner, enjoying exercise, feeling worthwhile to spend money on exercise, and not having to take care of others, were more likely to be engaged in regular exercise in the total population. The "enjoyment" in exercise was a significant influential factor for both sexes. Women were more likely to exercise regularly if they were aged 40-64 years old compared with those over 65 years old, have lower self-rated health scores, felt it was more worthwhile to spend money on exercise and did not have to care for another, whereas men who have higher education level and did not feel a lack of time were more likely to exercise regularly. CONCLUSIONS There are gender differences in regular exercise behavior during leisure time and related influential factors among Taiwanese adults. CONCLUSION We found a significant association between HGS and PIFR in hospitalized patients with acute exacerbations of COPD. Whether interventions aimed at increasing skeletal muscle strength also result in improvement in PIFR remains unclear and need further study.Patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease should follow lifestyle recommendations that can reduce their cardiovascular risk (e.g., avoid smoking). However, some patients fail to follow these recommendations and engage in unhealthy behavior. With the aim to identify psychosocial factors that characterize patients at high risk of repeated cardiovascular events, we investigated the relationship between social support, mental health (coping, self-esteem, and perceived stress), and unhealthy behavior. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 419 patients recently diagnosed with coronary heart disease (myocardial infarction or angina) who participated in the National Health Survey in Spain (2018). Unhealthy behaviors were defined according to the European Guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention. Only 1% of patients reported no unhealthy behaviors, with 11% reporting one, 40% two, 35% three, and 13% four or more unhealthy behaviors. In cooperation with the Madagascan Ministry of Health, this study aims to elicit the perceptions, experiences, and recommendations of key stakeholders in relation to a MHW amid a pilot study in 31 state-funded health care facilities. We conducted a two-stage qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews with stakeholders (N = 21) representing the following groups community representatives, health care providers, health officials and representatives from phone provider companies. Interviews were conducted in Atsimondrano and Renivohitra districts, between November and December of 2017. Data was coded thematically using inductive and deductive approaches, and found to align with a social ecological model. Key facilitators for successful implementation of the MHW, include (i) close collaboration with existing communal structures and (ii) creation of an incentive scheme to reward pregnant women to save. Key barriers to the application of the MHW in the study zone include (i) disruption of informal benefits for health care providers related to the current cash-based payment system, (ii) low mobile phone ownership, (iii) illiteracy among the target population, and (iv) failure of the MHW to overcome essential access barriers towards institutional health care services such as fear of unpredictable expenses. The MHW was perceived as a potential solution to reduce disparities in access to maternal health care. To ensure success of the MHW, direct demand-side and provider-side financial incentives merit consideration.PURPOSE The purpose was to explore the exercise behavior of the Taiwanese population during leisure time and to examine the gender differences in related influential factors. METHODS The Leisure Time and Sport Questionnaire (LTSQ) conducted by the Academia Sinica in 2007 was used for analysis. Participants were drawn from the Taiwanese population aged over 18 years old. Multinomial logistic regression models were used to test the association between the frequency of exercise and related factors in all the participants, male, and female participants, respectively. RESULTS In the total 2,147 participants, 47.8% reported they regularly exercised, 34.1% irregularly exercised, and 18.1% never exercised. There were no significant gender differences in the frequency of exercise, but a significant gender difference was found in the types of exercise most often practiced. Participants in one of following conditions, over 65 and under 40 years old, living in the city, having higher education levels, having a spouse or partner, enjoying exercise, feeling worthwhile to spend money on exercise, and not having to take care of others, were more likely to be engaged in regular exercise in the total population. The "enjoyment" in exercise was a significant influential factor for both sexes. Women were more likely to exercise regularly if they were aged 40-64 years old compared with those over 65 years old, have lower self-rated health scores, felt it was more worthwhile to spend money on exercise and did not have to care for another, whereas men who have higher education level and did not feel a lack of time were more likely to exercise regularly. CONCLUSIONS There are gender differences in regular exercise behavior during leisure time and related influential factors among Taiwanese adults. The findings of the present study can be used when designing gender-specific health promotion programs.

    Studies on the relationship between lifetime body mass index (BMI) trajectory and colorectal premalignant precursor lesions are limited. This study aimed to assess the relationship between prediagnostic adulthood BMI trajectory and the risk of colorectal adenomas using data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial.

    In total, 39,824 participants in the intervention arm of the prospective PLCO cohort, who have undergone at least one colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy examination with a confirmed diagnosis of colorectal adenomas, were enrolled and divided into four groups (underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese) according to BMI during each age period. SAS Proc Traj was used to establish the BMI trajectory model. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

    Compared with normal weight, overweight or obesity significantly increased colorectal adenomas risk in each age period after 30 years. Specifically, obesity in the 50s was most closely related to colorectal adenomas risk [HR 1.32, 95% CI (1.22, 1.43)]. This review focuses on new findings that clarify the roles specific epigenetic regulators play in T cell-mediated aGVHD development and discusses how their modulation could disrupt that process to beneficial effects. DNA methyltransferases, histone methyltransferases and histone deacetylases are the most closely studied regulators across aGVHD priming, induction and effector phases and have been manipulated using drugs and other methods in both murine models and clinical trials to varying degrees of success. Antigen-presenting cells, effector T cells and memory T cells, among others, are targeted and affected by these regulators in different ways. Finally, our review highlights new directions for study and potential novel targets for modulation to abrogate aGVHD.The genetic and molecular basis of sickle cell disease (SCD) has long since been characterized but the pathophysiological basis is not entirely defined. How a red cell hemolytic disorder initiates inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, coagulation activation and eventually leads to vascular thrombosis, is yet to be elucidated. Recent evidence has demonstrated a high frequency of unprovoked/recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) in SCD, with an increased risk of mortality among patients with a history of VTE. Here, we thoroughly review the molecular basis for the prothrombotic state in SCD, specifically highlighting emerging evidence for activation of overlapping inflammation and coagulation pathways, that predispose to venous thromboembolism. We share perspectives in managing venous thrombosis in SCD, highlighting innovative therapies with the potential to influence the clinical course of disease and reduce thrombotic risk, while maintaining an acceptable safety profile.
