BACKGROUND Little information has been available regarding the usefulness of Ranawat triangle method in estimating anatomical hip joint center in the Japanese population. In this study, we aimed to determine the accuracy of the method in estimating hip joint center. METHODS Using digitally reconstructed radiographs of 123 normal hips (123 patients), we measured the hip joint center coordinates (Cx, Cy) with reference to the ipsilateral lowest point of the teardrop, the pelvic width, and the pelvic height. Using these measurement values, we performed the following analyses (1) the relationship of hip joint center location with pelvic dimensions; (2) accuracy of Ranawat method in estimating hip joint center; (3) alternative methods to estimate hip joint center using pelvic height. RESULTS The mean Cx and Cy were 32 ± 3.0 mm and 13 ± 2.1 mm, respectively. Pelvic height was positively correlated with Cx (r = 0.51, p less then 0.001) and Cy (r = 0.69, p less then 0.001), but the correlations of pelvic width with Cx and Cy were negligible. The mean estimation error of the Ranawat method was -6.7 ± 2.6 mm in x-axis and 6.6 ± 1.9 mm in y-axis, respectively. The hip joint center was estimated within a 5 mm error in both axes in only 8 hips (6.5%). Thus, we developed two estimating methods using pelvic height, modified Ranawat method and pelvic height ratio method, and the estimation errors of these methods were within 5 mm in both axes in 118 hips (96%) and 116 hips (94%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Ranawat method showed poor accuracy in estimating anatomical hip joint center and is not recommended for clinical use. Our alternative methods may be useful for surgeons planning the position of the acetabular component in total hip arthroplasty. METHODS A comminuted subtrochanteric femur fracture model was created with a 2-cm gap below the lessor trochanter in 20 synthetic femurs. The fractures were fixed with one of four implants - Antegrade Femoral Nail (AFN), Trochanteric Fixation Nail Advanced with a femoral neck blade (TFNA blade), TFNA with a femoral neck screw (TFNA screw), and the reversed distal femoral locking compression plate (DF-LCP) - all manufactured by DePuy Synthes. Axial compression tests and torsion tests were performed and the stiffness of each implant was compared. RESULTS For compression, the TFNA blade, TFNA screw, and AFN provided significantly higher stiffness than DF-LCP (p less then 0.001, p less then 0.001, p = 0.001, respectively), and the TFNA blade provided significantly higher stiffness than AFN (p = 0.049). For torsion, there were no significant differences among the groups in internal rotation, while the TFNA screw had significantly lower torsional stiffness than the AFN, TFNA blade and DF-LCP in external rotation (p = 0.036, p = 0.034, p = 0.037, respectively). CONCLUSIONS These findings could help to provide biomechanical evidence regarding choice of implant for the treatment of comminuted subtrochanteric femur fracture. The TFNA blade may be more suitable for the treatment of comminuted subtrochanteric femur fracture. BACKGROUND Low cardiovascular fitness is common poststroke. Secondary aims were to assess if cardiovascular workload was influenced by the activity completed, participants motivation or enjoyment, or changes in Lokomat settings. METHODS Ten patients with subacute stroke (mean (SD) age 63.4 (13) years) participated in 6x20-minute Lokomat study sessions. Each study session involved a warm-up and 3x5-minute APF activities presented in a random order. Metabolic data were collected using the COSMED-K5. Participants rated their perceived exertion on the BORG CR10 scale and Lokomat settings of body-weight support, guidance force, and speed were recorded. RESULTS Moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise was achieved and maintained over the 15 minutes of exercise, objectively demonstrated by a mean (SD) Metabolic Equivalent Task of 3.1 (1.3), and mean (SD) oxygen consumption of 8.0 (3.8) ml/kg/min, estimated as 52% VO2max. This was subjectively confirmed by exertion scores between 3 and 5. The cardiovascular workload was not affected by which activity was completed, participant motivation or enjoyment, or significant progression of Lokomat settings between study sessions. CONCLUSIONS Mobility-dependent patients with subacute stroke can achieve sustained moderate intensity cardiovascular exercise on the Lokomat when using APF activities. Scientific understanding of mother-infant HPA axis attunement has been limited by discrepant methods for assessing attunement that often conflate different levels of association. We sought to refine the conceptualization of attunement by investigating whether mother-infant cortisol attunement exists as coupling of response trajectories within an acute stress episode, separate from shared developmental patterns and/or overall dyadic similarity in cortisol levels, and whether the degree of attunement depends on within- or between-dyad differences in maternal risk and protective factors. We examined these questions using a longitudinal study with mother/infant salivary cortisol during dyadic stressors at 6, 12, and 18 months postnatal. A three-level hierarchical linear model showed that sample-wide associations between mother and infant cortisol were not significant at any level, suggesting normative lack of attunement; however, there was significant variability in degree of attunement across dyads. Concurrent levels of family resources and social support satisfaction predicted lower mother-infant cortisol attunement within the session, and overall (mean) parenting stress predicted the opposite. Follow-up analyses showed this was typically due to an increase in infants' (but not their mothers') within-session cortisol response slopes with increasing support and decreasing stress. Implications for the role of mother-infant cortisol attunement in intergenerational stress transmission are discussed.Brassica tournefortii is an annual herbaceous plant, native to the North Africa and Middle East. The present study is the first phytochemical investigation on Brassica tournefortii organs (leaves, stems, and roots) in terms of nutraceutical, chemical composition, and bioactivity. Brassica tournefortii leaves exhibited the highest values of nutraceutical contents. Interestingly, gas chromatograph-y-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis enabled to identify three new isothiocyanates iberverin nitrile and iberin detected only in roots, and iberin nitrile detected in all organs. Utilising fixed samples from patients, we have studied the three-dimensional micro-architecture of the human endometrium. We demonstrate that some non-branching, single, vertical functionalis glands originate from a complex horizontally-interconnecting network of basalis glands. The existence of a multipotent endometrial epithelial stem cell capable of regenerating the entire complement of glandular lineages was demonstrated by in vivo lineage tracing, using naturally-occurring somatic mitochondrial DNA mutations as clonal markers. Vertical tracking of mutated clones showed that at least one stem-cell population resides in the basalis glands. There is a need for research informed action to map possible drivers for change at the national level and examine their potential implications in order to shape the dental workforce to serve population needs. The objective of this study was to explore key stakeholders' views on the drivers for change for the Malaysian dental workforce and their potential implications. Method Stakeholders from key dental organisations/professions in Malaysia were purposively sampled and invited to participate in a semi-structured interview (n = 20) using a pre-tested topic guide. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using Framework Analysis. Results Drivers for workforce were identified across four main domains policy-politics; trends in demography; social and economic; and, technology-scientific development. The pace of change and possible interplay between drivers, most notably government policy, liberalisation of education and health services and challenges of workforce governance, followed by Malaysian demography and health trends. Implications for the future, including possible uncertainties, particularly in relation to specialisation and privatisation were identified, together in balancing and meeting public health needs/demands with professional career expectations. Conclusion Stakeholders' views on the high-level drivers for change broadly mirror those of high-income countries; however, specific challenges for Malaysia relate to rapid expansion of dental education and a young workforce with significant career aspirations, together with imbalances in the health care system. The impact of these drivers was perceived as leading to greatest uncertainty around specialisation and privatisation of the future workforce.Background Natural plant essential oils have antimicrobial properties; however, essential oils are difficult to maintain in a system because of their volatile nature. Firstly, we prepared microcapsules from β-cyclodextrin and oregano essential oil and characterized their properties. Secondly, the effect of microcapsules on the preservation of freshly cut purple yam was studied using an edible coating technique. Purple yams immersed in distilled water were used as control, and their characteristics were compared with yams coated with citric acid (CA), citric acid + sodium alginate (CA-SA), and citric acid + sodium alginate + β-cyclodextrin-oregano essential oil microcapsules (CA-SA-**) and stored at 4 °C for 5 d. Results Microcapsules of oregano essential oil and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) solution were successfully prepared via the inclusion method, with an optimal encapsulation efficiency of 55.14%. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis showed strong bonds between β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and oregano essential oil.

This study investigated the effects of both force level and gender on pinch force reproduction errors in normal participants during an ipsilateral force reproduction task. In total, 20 healthy participants were asked to generate a range of levels of reference forces ranging from 5% to 60% maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in increments of 5% MVIC using the tip pinch and to reproduce these forces using the same hand. The results showed that the males more accurately and consistently reproduced the forces than did the females, and the most accurate estimation occurred at approximately 20% to 35% MVIC. This finding can help us better understand the reasons for the higher rate of musculoskeletal disorders in females than in males and to develop tools and preventive strategies to decrease the rate of hand injuries in both genders.A ring of points that is rotated so rapidly is perceived as a stationary outline circle that can induce an illusory rotation with the same spin direction in a subsequently presented ring of stationary points. This motion bridging effect (MBE) demonstrates that motion information can be conveyed by temporal frequencies generally thought to exceed the processing capabilities of the human visual system. It was first described in displays shown with an analog oscilloscope, but the rapid rotation rates needed to produce the MBE have heretofore prevented it from being investigated with conventional raster scan monitors. Here, we demonstrate the MBE can be reliably generated using the new generation of 240 Hz LCD gaming monitors, and exhibits basic characteristics similar to those reported previously. These monitors therefore provide a readily available resource for research on the MBE and the studies of the visual processing rapid motions in general.Previous studies found that plant communities on infertile soils are relatively resistant to climatic variation due to stress tolerance adaptations. However, the species assemblies in gypsum soil habitats require further investigation. Thus, we considered the following questions. (1) Do harsher arid conditions determine the characteristics of the species that form plant assemblages? (2) Is the selection of the species that assemble in arid conditions mediated by their ability to grow on gypsum soils? (3) Is the selection of species that assemble in harsher conditions related to phylogenetically conserved functional traits? Perennial plant communities were analysed in 89 gypsum-soil sites along a 400 km climate gradient from the central to southeastern Iberian Peninsula. Each local assemblage was analysed in 30 × 30 m plots and described based on taxonomic, functional (soil plant affinity) and phylogenetic parameters. This study investigated the effects of both force level and gender on pinch force reproduction errors in normal participants during an ipsilateral force reproduction task. In total, 20 healthy participants were asked to generate a range of levels of reference forces ranging from 5% to 60% maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) in increments of 5% MVIC using the tip pinch and to reproduce these forces using the same hand. The results showed that the males more accurately and consistently reproduced the forces than did the females, and the most accurate estimation occurred at approximately 20% to 35% MVIC. This finding can help us better understand the reasons for the higher rate of musculoskeletal disorders in females than in males and to develop tools and preventive strategies to decrease the rate of hand injuries in both genders.A ring of points that is rotated so rapidly is perceived as a stationary outline circle that can induce an illusory rotation with the same spin direction in a subsequently presented ring of stationary points. Here, we demonstrate the MBE can be reliably generated using the new generation of 240 Hz LCD gaming monitors, and exhibits basic characteristics similar to those reported previously. Our results demonstrate that arabinose-dependent regulated delayed fur shut-off is an effective strategy to develop live attenuated bacterial vaccines while retaining strong immunogenicity. Variety of conventional vaccine strategies tested against HIV-1 have failed to induce protection against HIV acquisition or durable control of viremia. Therefore, innovative strategies that can induce long lasting protective immunity against HIV chronic infection are needed. Recently, we developed an integration-defective HIV lentiDNA vaccine that undergoes a single cycle of replication in target cells in which most viral antigens are produced. A single immunization with such lentiDNA induced long-lasting T-cell and modest antibody responses in cynomolgus macaques. Here eighteen months after this single immunization, all animals were subjected to repeated low dose intra-rectal challenges with a heterologous pathogenic SIVmac251 isolate. Although the viral set point in SIVmac-infected cynomolgus is commonly lower than that seen in Indian rhesus macaques, the vaccinated group of macaques displayed a two log reduction of peak of viremia followed by a progressive and sustained control of virus replication relative to control animals. This antiviral control correlated with antigen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells with high capacity of recall responses comprising effector and central memory T cells but also memory T cell precursors. This is the first description of SIV control in NHP model infected at 18 months following a single immunization with a non-integrative single cycle lentiDNA HIV vaccine. While not delivering sterilizing immunity, our single immunization strategy with a single-cycle lentivector DNA vaccine appears to provide an interesting and safe vaccine platform that warrants further exploration. BACKGROUND Substantial variations in the safety profiles of different formulations of the bacillus Calmette-**érin (BCG) vaccine exist. Therefore, we aimed to detect safety signals of BCG vaccine for intradermal injection (BCG-ID) and percutaneous injection (BCG-PC) in the Korea Adverse Event Reporting System (KAERS). METHODS We conducted a vaccine safety surveillance study from the adverse events (AEs) reported following BCG vaccine in the Korea Institute of Drug Safety and Risk Management KAERS Database (KIDS-KD) between 2005 and 2017. We used the tree-based scan statistic (TSS) and four disproportionality-based algorithms for signal detection empirical Bayesian geometric mean; proportional reporting ratio; reporting odds ratio; and information component. The detected signals from each algorithm was compared with the known AEs of BCG vaccine (reference standard) to present positive predictive value (PPV) and area under the receiver operating curve (AUC). RESULTS From the total of 52,191 vaccine-related AE pairs, 963 AE pairs were reported following the BCG vaccine, in which BCG-ID and -PC accounted for 71.1% and 28.9%, respectively. Overall, 97.2% of AE reports were non-serious; lymphadenopathy (583/963; 50.3%) and injection site discharge (193/963; 20.0%) were the most commonly reported AEs detected by all algorithms. Tuberculous osteitis was reported solely from BCG-PC (15/279; 5.4%), while most of the AEs from BCG-ID were related to injection site complications. The TSS demonstrated the best balance of the performance measures, with PPV and AUC of 66.7% and 63.1%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS TSS was successfully applied in the KAERS to detect safety signals of BCG vaccine. In addition, difference in the safety profiles of BCG-ID and BCG-PC warrants further investigation to confirm our findings. MATHERIALS AND METHODS Patients with BPUR admitted at a single institution between March 2012 and July 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. Surgical and oncological data were assessed. RESULTS Forty-six women with gynecologic tumors involving the ureter were treated with BPUR. R0 resection was achieved in 40/46 patients (86.9%), while pathologic margins were microscopically positive in 6 women (13.1%). Overall, 12 women (26.0%) received radiotherapy before surgery among them, 8 patients received neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Twenty-six women underwent BPUR during primary surgery, whereas 20 (43.4%) required BPUR upon recurrence. Twenty-six patients (56.2%) were found to have hydronephrosis at pre-operative workup. The psoas bladder hitch was the most common procedure performed for urinary reconstruction (63%) with respect to direct reimplantation (37%). Fourteen patients (14/46 = 30.4%) experienced urological complications. Urinary leakage occurred in 9 patients (19.5%), specifically 5 uretero-vaginal fistula, 3 uroperitoneum, 1 uretero-enteral fistula. There were 3 cases (6.5%) of hydronephrosis at the side of ureteroneocystostomy and 2 cases (4.3%) of unilateral renal impairment requiring nephrectomy. At multivariate analysis only pre-operative radiotherapy (p = 0.047) and a history of pelvic irradiation (p = 0.025) were independently associated with an increased risk of developing severe urinary complications. CONCLUSIONS BPUR is feasible in gynecologic cancer with invasion of the urinary tract. However, since a slight increase of post-operative urological complications was observed in the previously irradiated fields, a personalized surgical planning is recommended for these women in the next future.

Karger AG, Basel.BACKGROUND The treatment of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) has evolved in recent years, and the disease-associated prognosis has improved substantially. This improvement has been driven largely by the approval of novel agents, many of which are expensive and not universally available. Less expensive but effective approaches would be of value globally. PATIENTS AND METHODS All consecutive MM patients diagnosed in the Centro de Hematología y Medicina Interna de Puebla after 1993 were included in this study. Patients were given oral thalidomide (100 mg/day), oral dexamethasone (36-40 mg/week), and aspirin 100 mg/day. Bor-tezomib (1.75 mg s.c. every week) was administered to those who could afford it. After 4-6 weeks of treatment, patients were offered an outpatient-based hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). After the recovery of granulocytes following HCT, patients continued indefinitely on thalidomide; those who failed to tolerate thalidomide were switched to lenalidomide (25 mg/day). RESULTS The median overall survival (OS) for all patients has not been reached and is >157 months. Median follow-up of the patients lasted 14 months (range 1.3-157). The median OS of patients with and without HCT was similar. The response rate (complete remission or very good partial remission) was 72% for those given thalidomide plus dexamethasone versus 88% for those given bortezomib, thalidomide, and dexamethasone before HCT, but OS was not different. As post-HCT maintenance, 37 patients received thalidomide; 26 of those (70%) could be maintained indefinitely on thalidomide, whereas 11 were switched to lenalidomide after a median of 7 months; median OS of patients maintained on thalidomide or lenalidomide after HCT was not different. CONCLUSION In this series, a regimen incorporating low-cost novel agents and outpatient HCT was associated with excellent long-term survival in the treatment of MM patients. MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) serve crucial roles in the progression of hypertension. We aimed to determine the role of miR-96-5p in the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of VSMCs and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS Angiotensin II (Ang II) was employed to treat VSMCs, and the expression of miR-96-5p was detected by RT-qPCR. Then, miR-96-5p mimic was transfected into VSMCs. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, transwell assay, and wound healing assay were applied to measure proliferation, cell cycle, and migration of VSMCs. The expression of proteins associated with proliferation, migration, and apoptosis was assessed. A luciferase reporter assay was applied to confirm the target binding between miR-96-5p and nuclear factors of activated T-cells 5 (NFAT5). Subsequently, siRNA was used to silence NFAT5, and cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis were assessed. RESULTS The results revealed that the expression of miR-96-5p was downregulated in Ang II-induced VSMCs. MiR-96-5p overexpression inhibited cell proliferation and migration but promoted cell apoptosis, enhanced the percentages of cells in the G1 and G2 phases, and reduced those in the S phase, accompanied by changes in the expression associated proteins. NFAT5 was confirmed as a direct target of miR-96-5p. NFAT5 silencing had the same results with miR-96-5p overexpression on VSMC proliferation, migration, and apoptosis, whereas miR-96-5p inhibitor reversed these effects. 69 MoM. Our study shows that changing the MCA-PSV threshold from 1.5 to 1.69 MoM will reduce the detection of fetal anemia and hence the need for repeat IUT by 31%. CONCLUSIONS Increasing the fetal MCA-PSV threshold from 1.5 to 1.69 will miss out one-third of the fetuses that will require a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th IUT. This is more relevant in geographical areas where the parents must travel long distances for IUTs, which are performed in tertiary fetal care centers. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel.BACKGROUND The treatment of patients with multiple myeloma (MM) has evolved in recent years, and the disease-associated prognosis has improved substantially. This improvement has been driven largely by the approval of novel agents, many of which are expensive and not universally available. Less expensive but effective approaches would be of value globally. PATIENTS AND METHODS All consecutive MM patients diagnosed in the Centro de Hematología y Medicina Interna de Puebla after 1993 were included in this study. Patients were given oral thalidomide (100 mg/day), oral dexamethasone (36-40 mg/week), and aspirin 100 mg/day. Bor-tezomib (1.75 mg s.c. every week) was administered to those who could afford it. After 4-6 weeks of treatment, patients were offered an outpatient-based hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). After the recovery of granulocytes following HCT, patients continued indefinitely on thalidomide; those who failed to tolerate thalidomide were switched to lenalidomide (25 mg/day). RESULTS The median overall survival (OS) for all patients has not been reached and is >157 months. Median follow-up of the patients lasted 14 months (range 1.3-157). The median OS of patients with and without HCT was similar. The response rate (complete remission or very good partial remission) was 72% for those given thalidomide plus dexamethasone versus 88% for those given bortezomib, thalidomide, and dexamethasone before HCT, but OS was not different. As post-HCT maintenance, 37 patients received thalidomide; 26 of those (70%) could be maintained indefinitely on thalidomide, whereas 11 were switched to lenalidomide after a median of 7 months; median OS of patients maintained on thalidomide or lenalidomide after HCT was not different. CONCLUSION In this series, a regimen incorporating low-cost novel agents and outpatient HCT was associated with excellent long-term survival in the treatment of MM patients. This approach may be a model for MM treatment in underprivileged circumstances. © 2020 S. Karger AG, Basel.BACKGROUND Aberrant proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are major pathological phenomenon in hypertension. MicroRNAs (miRNAs/miRs) serve crucial roles in the progression of hypertension. We aimed to determine the role of miR-96-5p in the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of VSMCs and its underlying mechanisms. METHODS Angiotensin II (Ang II) was employed to treat VSMCs, and the expression of miR-96-5p was detected by RT-qPCR. Then, miR-96-5p mimic was transfected into VSMCs. Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, transwell assay, and wound healing assay were applied to measure proliferation, cell cycle, and migration of VSMCs. The expression of proteins associated with proliferation, migration, and apoptosis was assessed. A luciferase reporter assay was applied to confirm the target binding between miR-96-5p and nuclear factors of activated T-cells 5 (NFAT5). Subsequently, siRNA was used to silence NFAT5, and cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis were assessed. RESULTS The results revealed that the expression of miR-96-5p was downregulated in Ang II-induced VSMCs. MiR-96-5p overexpression inhibited cell proliferation and migration but promoted cell apoptosis, enhanced the percentages of cells in the G1 and G2 phases, and reduced those in the S phase, accompanied by changes in the expression associated proteins. NFAT5 was confirmed as a direct target of miR-96-5p. NFAT5 silencing had the same results with miR-96-5p overexpression on VSMC proliferation, migration, and apoptosis, whereas miR-96-5p inhibitor reversed these effects. CONCLUSIONS Our findings concluded that miR-96-5p could regulate proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of VSMCs induced by Ang II via targeting NFAT5. © 2020 S. RESULTS The Simple Risk Score included waist circumference, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diabetes, sex, and education. The Best-fit Risk Score included urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, SBP, C-reactive protein, triglyceride, sex, education, and diabetes. In the validation sample, the areas under the receiver operating curve of the Simple Risk Score and Best-fit Risk Score were 0.717 (95% CI, 0.689-0.744) and 0.721 (95% CI, 0.693-0.748), respectively; the discrimination difference between the score systems was not significant (P = 0.455). The Simple Risk Score had a higher Youden index, sensitivity, and negative predictive value, with an optimal cutoff value of 14. We compared the DNA methylomes of primary colorectal cancers (CRCs) and CRC metastases to the liver. Laser microdissection was used to obtain epithelial tissue (10 to 25 × 106 μm2) from sections of fresh-frozen samples of primary CRCs (n = 6), CRC liver metastases (n = 12), and normal colon mucosa (n = 3). DNA extracted from tissues was enriched for methylated sequences with a methylCpG binding domain (MBD) polypeptide-based protocol and subjected to deep sequencing. The performance of this protocol was compared with that of targeted enrichment for bisulfite sequencing used in a previous study of ours. RESULTS MBD enrichment captured a total of 322,551 genomic regions (249.5 Mb or ~ 7.8% of the human genome), which incD capture provided a better picture of the extension of CRC-associated DNA hypermethylation but was less powerful for identifying hypomethylation. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that the hypermethylation phenotype in CRC liver metastases remains similar to that of the primary tumor, whereas CRC-associated DNA hypomethylation probably undergoes further progression after the cancer cells have migrated to the liver.BACKGROUND A new type of epileptogenic tumor, the polymorphous low-grade neuroepithelial tumor of the young (PLNTY) was firstly reported by Jason T. Huse et al. at 2016. After that, only 1 case of PLNTY was reported by article. The radiological characteristics of PLNTY have not been concluded. The objective of our study was to report 3 cases of PLNTYs in details and to analyze the image characteristics and genetic alterations of PLNTYs by reviewing our cases and articles. CASE PRESENTATION There were 3 cases diagnosed as PLNTY by pathology in our hospital during the last 10 years, with the average age of 15. They were all suffered from different degrees of epilepsy. All of them underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and 2 of them underwent computer tomography (CT) imaging. The PLNTYs are all appearing as a solid or solid-cystic cortical mass with little mass effect and unclear boundary with normal brain tissue. They are all shown as hyperintensity in T2WI and iso-/hypointensity in T1WI with slight or no enhancement after contract enhanced in MR imaging. The "salt and pepper sign" in T2WI and grit calcification in CT images might be specific characteristics of PLNTY. All of them recovered after excision of the tumors. The gene tests revealed fibroblast growth factor receptors 3 (FGFR3)-TACC3 fusion and FGFR3 amplification in one case, and the B-Raf proto-oncogene (BRAF) V600E mutation in another case. CONCLUSION In the image, the partial ill-marginated cortical mass with "salt and pepper sign" in T2WI or grit calcification in CT imaging might be the typical imaging characteristics of PLNTY. We also prove that the BRAF V600E mutation as well as the FGFR2 and FGFR3 have a close relationship with PLNTY.BACKGROUND The rate of preterm birth has been increasing worldwide. METHODS Information on obstetric antecedents and risk factors for preterm birth in pregnant women was obtained from the National Health Insurance Research (NHIR) database provided by the Taiwan National Health Research Institute. All live births from 2004 to 2013 in Taiwan were included in this study. RESULTS A total of 130,362 live births from 2004 to 2013 were included in this study. Overall, the average annual rate of preterm births increased by 5.3% (from 3.33% in 2004 to 5.11% in 2013). Multiple logistic regression analyses showed that nulliparous women, multifetal pregnancies, advanced mother age, history of preterm birth, history of maternal drug abuse/dependence, and maternal medical complications were positively associated with an increased risk of preterm birth (all p-values less then 0.

Loneliness is a potent predictor of negative health outcomes, making it important to identify risk factors for loneliness. Though extant studies have identified characteristics associated with loneliness, less is known about the cumulative and relative importance of these factors, and how their interaction may impact loneliness. Here, 4,885 individuals ages 10-97 years from the US completed the three-item UCLA Loneliness Survey on TestMyBrain.org. Using census data, we calculated the population and community household income of participants' census area, and the proportion of individuals in the participant's census area that shared the participant's demographic characteristics (i.e., sociodemographic density). We evaluated the relative importance of three classes of variables for loneliness risk those related to the person (e.g., age), place (e.g., community household income), and the interaction of person X place (sociodemographic density). We find that loneliness is highly prevalent and best explained by person (age) and place (community household income) characteristics. Of the variance in loneliness accounted for, the overwhelming majority was explained by age with loneliness peaking at 19 years and declining thereafter. The congruence between one's sociodemographic characteristics and that of one's neighborhood had no impact on loneliness. These data may have important implications for public health interventions.Trade-off between vision and olfaction, the fact that investment in one correlates with decreased investment in the other, has been demonstrated by a wealth of comparative studies. However, there is still no empirical evidence suggesting how these two sensory systems coevolve, i.e. simultaneously or alternatively. The "Dark-flies" (Drosophila melanogaster) constitute a unique model to investigate such relation since they have been reared in the dark since 1954, approximately 60 years (~1500 generations). To observe how vision and olfaction evolve, populations of Dark-flies were reared in normal lighting conditions for 1 (DF1G) and 65 (DF65G) generations. We measured the sizes of the visual (optic lobes, OLs) and olfactory (antennal lobes, ALs) primary centres, as well as the rest of the brain, and compared the results with the original and its genetically most similar strain (Oregon flies). We found that, whereas the ALs decreased in size, the OLs (together with the brain) increased in size in the Dark-flies returned **** to the light, both in the DF1G and DF65G. These results experimentally show that trade-off between vision and olfaction occurs simultaneously, and suggests that there are possible genetic and epigenetic processes regulating the size of both optic and antennal lobes. Furthermore, although the Dark-flies were able to mate and survive in the dark with a reduced neural investment, individuals being returned to the light seem to have been selected with reinvestment in visual capabilities despite a potential higher energetic cost.PURPOSE To automate the estimation of swallowing motion from 2D MR cine images using deformable registration for future applications of personalized margin reduction in head and neck radiotherapy and outcome assessment of radiation-associated dysphagia. METHODS Twenty-one patients with serial 2D FSPGR-MR cine scans of the head and neck conducted through the course of definitive radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer. Included patients had at least one cine scan before, during, or after radiotherapy, with a total of 52 cine scans. Contours of 7 swallowing related regions-of-interest (ROIs), including pharyngeal constrictor, epiglottis, base of tongue, geniohyoid, hyoid, soft palate, and larynx, were manually delineated from consecutive frames of the cine scan covering at least one swallowing cycle. We applied a modified thin-plate-spline robust-point-matching algorithm to register the point sets of each ROI automatically over frames. The deformation vector fields from the registration were then used to estimate the motion during swallowing for each ROI. Registration errors were estimated by comparing the deformed contours with the manual contours. RESULTS On average 22 frames of each cine scan were contoured. The registration for one cine scan (7 ROIs over 22 frames) on average took roughly 22 minutes. A number of 8018 registrations were successfully batch processed without human interaction after the contours were drawn. The average registration error for all ROIs and all patients was 0.36 mm (range 0.06 mm- 2.06 mm). Larynx had the average largest motion in superior direction of all structures under consideration (range 0.0 mm- 58.7 mm). Geniohyoid had the smallest overall motion of all ROIs under consideration and the superior-inferior motion was larger than the anterior-posterior motion for all ROIs. CONCLUSION We developed and validated a deformable registration framework to automate the estimation of swallowing motion from 2D MR cine scans.Few reports exist on QTL mapping of the important economic traits of hawthorn. We hybridized the cultivars 'Shandongdamianqiu' (female parent) and 'Xinbinruanzi' (male parent), and 130 F1 individuals and the two parents were used for RAD-seq, SNP development, and high-density linkage map construction. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/olprinone.html Three genetic maps were obtained, one for each of the parents and an integrated one. In these three maps, 17 linkage groups were constructed. QTL mapping based on six agronomic traits, namely fruit transverse diameter, vertical diameter, single fruit weight, pericarp brittleness, pericarp puncture hardness, and average sarcocarp firmness were conducted, and 25 QTLs were detected in seven linkage groups. Explained phenotypic variation rate ranged from 17.7% to 35%. This genetic map contains the largest number of molecular markers ever obtained from hawthorn and will provide an important future reference for fine QTL mapping of economic traits and molecular assisted selection of hawthorn.

We evaluated the relative importance of three classes of variables for loneliness risk those related to the person (e.g., age), place (e.g., community household income), and the interaction of person X place (sociodemographic density). We find that loneliness is highly prevalent and best explained by person (age) and place (community household income) characteristics. Of the variance in loneliness accounted for, the overwhelming majority was explained by age with loneliness peaking at 19 years and declining thereafter. The congruence between one's sociodemographic characteristics and that of one's neighborhood had no impact on loneliness. These data may have important implications for public health interventions.Trade-off between vision and olfaction, the fact that investment in one correlates with decreased investment in the other, has been demonstrated by a wealth of comparative studies. However, there is still no empirical evidence suggesting how these two sensory systems coevolve, i.e. simultaneously or alternatively. The "Dark-flies" (Drosophila melanogaster) constitute a unique model to investigate such relation since they have been reared in the dark since 1954, approximately 60 years (~1500 generations). To observe how vision and olfaction evolve, populations of Dark-flies were reared in normal lighting conditions for 1 (DF1G) and 65 (DF65G) generations. We measured the sizes of the visual (optic lobes, OLs) and olfactory (antennal lobes, ALs) primary centres, as well as the rest of the brain, and compared the results with the original and its genetically most similar strain (Oregon flies). We found that, whereas the ALs decreased in size, the OLs (together with the brain) increased in size in the Dark-flies returned back to the light, both in the DF1G and DF65G. These results experimentally show that trade-off between vision and olfaction occurs simultaneously, and suggests that there are possible genetic and epigenetic processes regulating the size of both optic and antennal lobes. Furthermore, although the Dark-flies were able to mate and survive in the dark with a reduced neural investment, individuals being returned to the light seem to have been selected with reinvestment in visual capabilities despite a potential higher energetic cost.PURPOSE To automate the estimation of swallowing motion from 2D MR cine images using deformable registration for future applications of personalized margin reduction in head and neck radiotherapy and outcome assessment of radiation-associated dysphagia. METHODS Twenty-one patients with serial 2D FSPGR-MR cine scans of the head and neck conducted through the course of definitive radiotherapy for oropharyngeal cancer. Included patients had at least one cine scan before, during, or after radiotherapy, with a total of 52 cine scans. Contours of 7 swallowing related regions-of-interest (ROIs), including pharyngeal constrictor, epiglottis, base of tongue, geniohyoid, hyoid, soft palate, and larynx, were manually delineated from consecutive frames of the cine scan covering at least one swallowing cycle. We applied a modified thin-plate-spline robust-point-matching algorithm to register the point sets of each ROI automatically over frames. The deformation vector fields from the registration were then used to estimate the motion during swallowing for each ROI. Registration errors were estimated by comparing the deformed contours with the manual contours. RESULTS On average 22 frames of each cine scan were contoured. The registration for one cine scan (7 ROIs over 22 frames) on average took roughly 22 minutes. A number of 8018 registrations were successfully batch processed without human interaction after the contours were drawn. The average registration error for all ROIs and all patients was 0.36 mm (range 0.06 mm- 2.06 mm). Larynx had the average largest motion in superior direction of all structures under consideration (range 0.0 mm- 58.7 mm). Geniohyoid had the smallest overall motion of all ROIs under consideration and the superior-inferior motion was larger than the anterior-posterior motion for all ROIs. CONCLUSION We developed and validated a deformable registration framework to automate the estimation of swallowing motion from 2D MR cine scans.Few reports exist on QTL mapping of the important economic traits of hawthorn. This study was designed to investigate the possible effect of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) on occupational burnout syndrome and the severity of depression experienced among thermal power plant workers and the role of oxidative stress.
In this cross-sectional study, 115 power plant workers and 124 administrative personnel of a hospital were enrolled as exposed and unexposed groups, respectively, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (***), catalase (Cat), and total antioxidant capacity were measured in serum samples. Exposure to electric and magnetic fields was measured using the IEEE Std C95.3.1 standard at each workstation. The burnout syndrome and the severity of depression were assessed using the Maslach Burnout and **** Depression Inventory.
The levels of MDA and *** were significantly lower in the exposed group than the unexposed group. The exposed group reported a higher prevalence of burnout syndrome and higher depression severity. Multiple linear regression showed that work experience, MDA level, and levels of exposure to magnetic fields are the most important predictor variables for burnout syndrome and severity of depression. In addition, a decrease in the level of Cat was significantly associated with increased burnout syndrome.

Transepidermal water loss rates (TEWL), stratum corneum (SC) hydration, and lactic acid sting test (LAST) score, as well as the L* value, served as secondary endpoints.
Treatments with either cream A or B markedly reduced erythema area, EI, and a* value. Significant reductions in both TEWL and L* value were also observed following topical applications of either cream A or B. Moreover, cream A decreased LAST score. Finally, the satisfaction rate of cream A was higher than that of cream B.

Conservative approaches with debridement and advanced medications, such as polyurethane foam, stand as mainstays. However, the healing process is often slow, thus increasing the risk for infection or other complications. In such cases, porcine dermis (PD) and polynucleotides-added hyaluronic acid (PAHA) were previously reported to accelerate healing. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of PD, PAHA and polyurethane foam in chronic ulcers. Thirty patients were randomly divided into 3 groups group 1 was treated with advanced medications, group 2 with PD, group 3 with PAHA. Standardised photographs and biopsies were taken before treatment and at 30-day follow-up. Photographs were processed to calculate the wound area. Specimens were stained with Haematoxylin/Eosin, Masson trichrome, and immunohistochemically for CD34, alpha-Smooth Muscle Actin (α-SMA), Collagen types I and III, Ki67. The re-epithelialized area was larger in patients treated with PD and PAHA compared with those treated with polyurethane foam (P less then .05 and P less then .01, respectively). Specimens from patients treated with PD and PAHA showed a higher number of myofibroblasts (α-SMA+, P less then .01), neo-angiogenesis (CD34+, P less then .01), proliferating dermal cells (Ki67+, P less then .01), proliferating keratinocytes (Ki67+, P less then .01) and collagen type 1 deposition (P less then .05). No difference was found between PD and PAHA. PD and PAHA proved to be more effective than polyurethane foam in the treatment of chronic ulcers. Catechin served as the most effective inhibitor of HAAs followed by luteolin and genistein. The study can bring us a broader idea for controlling the formation of HAAs according to the structure of flavonoids. Background The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of post-activation performance enhancement (PAPE) during successive sets of the bench press (BP) exercise under blood flow restriction (BFR). Methods The study included 10 strength-trained males (age = 29.8 ± 4.6 years; body mass = 94.3 ± 3.6 kg; BP 1-repetition maximum (1RM) = 168.5 ± 26.4 kg). The experiment was performed following a randomized crossover design, where each participant performed two different exercise protocols under blood flow restriction (BFR) and control test protocol (CONT) without blood flow restriction. During the experimental sessions, the study participants performed 3 sets of 3 repetitions of the BP exercise at 70%1RM with a 5 min rest interval between sets. The differences in peak power output (PP), mean power output (MP), peak bar velocity (PV), and mean bar velocity (MV) between the CONT and BFR conditions were examined using 2-way (condition × set) repeated measures ANOVA. Furthermore, t-test comparisons betweeneffect was analyzed through changes in power output and bar velocity that occurred under both the CONT and BFR conditions. Using the fluorescent cisplatin analog BODIPY-cisplatin, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, and mass spectrometry, we identified the protein binding partners in A2780 and cisplatin-resistant A2780cis ovarian carcinoma, as well as in HCT-8 and oxaliplatin-resistant HCT-8ox colorectal cell lines. Vimentin, only identified in ovarian cancer cells; growth factor receptor-bound protein 2, only identified in colorectal cancer cells; and glutathione-S-transferase π, identified in all four cell lines, were further investigated. The effect of pharmacological inhibition and siRNA-mediated knockdown on cytotoxicity was studied to assess the relevance of these binding partners. A group of age-matched patients without a neoplastic disease was used as control cohort. Vimentin, only identified in ovarian cancer cells; growth factor receptor-bound protein 2, only identified in colorectal cancer cells; and glutathione-S-transferase π, identified in all four cell lines, were further investigated. The effect of pharmacological inhibition and siRNA-mediated knockdown on cytotoxicity was studied to assess the relevance of these binding partners. The silencing of glutathione-S-transferase π significantly sensitized intrinsically resistant HCT-8 and HCT-8ox cells to cisplatin, suggesting a possible involvement of the protein in the resistance of colorectal cancer cells to the drug. However, limited data is available regarding the MB tumor microenvironment. Here, we present a mass spectrometry-based multi-omics pilot study of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from recurrent MB patients. A group of age-matched patients without a neoplastic disease was used as control cohort. Proteome profiling identified characteristic tumor markers, including FSTL5, ART3, and FMOD, and revealed a strong prevalence of anti-inflammatory and tumor-promoting proteins characteristic for alternatively polarized myeloid cells in MB samples. The up-regulation of ADAMTS1, GAP43 and GPR37 indicated hypoxic conditions in the CSF of MB patients. These treatments also involve Early Childhood Caries (ECC) due to the fact that this disease affects preschool children (a vulnerable population) and, in addition, shows a propensity to evolve into more serious complications (dental pain, infections). A narrative review was carried out to support a protocol for treating ECC with efficacious and safe (in terms of SARS-CoV-2 transmission) procedures. Protocol involves criteria for patients' selection remotely (telemedicine), and well-detailed criteria/equipment and hygiene procedures to combat against SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Moreover, the protocol proposes innovative caries treatments, named Minimally Invasive Treatments (MITs), well known in pedodontics for their high level of children's acceptance during dental care.
