    Mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). Here, we established screenable phenotypes of mitochondrial morphology and function in primary fibroblasts derived from patients with IPD. Upper arm punch skin biopsy was performed in 41 patients with mid-stage IPD and 21 age-matched healthy controls. At the single-cell level, the basal mitochondrial membrane potential (Ψm) was higher in patients with IPD than in controls. Similarly, under carbonyl cyanide 4-(trifluoromethoxy)phenylhydrazone (FCCP) stress, the remaining Ψm was increased in patients with IPD. Analysis of mitochondrial morphometric parameters revealed significantly decreased mitochondrial connectivity in patients with IPD, with 9 of 14 morphometric mitochondrial parameters differing from those in controls. Significant morphometric mitochondrial changes included the node degree, mean volume, skeleton size, perimeter, form factor, node count, erosion body count, endpoints, and mitochondria count (all P-values  less then  0.05). Our results described that overexpression of miR-548x and miR-4698 could inhibit proliferation of A-172 and U251 cells. Also, miR-548x promoted the cell cycle arrest of GBM cell lines. The luciferase reporter assay results showed the 3' UTR of PDK1, RHEB, and mTOR are direct targets of the miR-548x and miR-4698. Too, the western blot analysis revealed that miR-548x and miR-4698 could downregulate the AKT1 protein expression. Overall, our findings suggest that miR-548x and miR-4698 could function as tumor suppressor genes in glioblastoma by controlling the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway and may act as gene therapy for clinical treatment of glioblastoma multiforme.Seaweed cultivation is a large industry worldwide, but production in Europe is small compared to production in Asian countries. In the EU, the motivations for seaweed farming may be seen from two perspectives; one being economic growth through biomass production and the other being the provisioning of ecosystem services such as mitigating eutrophication. In this paper, we assess the economic potential of large-scale cultivation of kelp, Saccharina latissima, along the Swedish west coast, including the value of externalities. The findings suggest that seaweed farming has the potential of becoming a profitable industry in Sweden. Furthermore, large-scale seaweed farming can sequester a significant share of annual anthropogenic nitrogen and phosphorus inflows to the basins of the Swedish west coast (8% of N and 60% of P). Concerning the valuation of externalities, positive values generated from sequestration of nitrogen and phosphorus are potentially counteracted by negative values from interference with recreational values. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/cbl0137-cbl-0137.html Despite the large N and P uptake, the socioeconomic value of this sequestration is only a minor share of the potential financial value from biomass production. OBJECTIVE To investigate the impact of decompressive craniectomy (DC) and cranioplasty (CP) on the efficacy of solutes distribution by the intracranial CSF and ISF flux. METHODS **** were allocated in 3 groups sham surgery, DC, and DC followed by CP. The solutes distribution in the brain parenchyma was assessed using T1 magnetic resonance imaging after injection of DOTA-Gadolinium in the cisterna magna. This evaluation was performed at an early time point following DC (after 2 d) and at a later time point (after 15 d). We evaluated the solutes distribution in the whole brain and in the region underneath the DC area. RESULTS Our results demonstrate that the global solutes distribution in the brain parenchyma is impaired after DC in ****, both at early and late time-points. However, there was no impact of DC on the solutes distribution just under the craniectomy. We then provide evidence that this impairment was reversed by CP. CONCLUSION The solute distribution in the brain parenchyma by the CSF and ISF is impaired by DC, a phenomenon reversed by CP. The C/D box containing SNORD42A was identified as an essential modulator for AML cell survival and proliferation in multiple human leukemia cell lines. In line, SNORD42A was consistently expressed at higher levels in primary AML patient samples than in CD34+ progenitors, monocytes and granulocytes. Functionally, knockout of SNORD42A reduced colony formation capability and inhibited proliferation. Opioids are an important medication for the treatment of acute and chronic **** pain, but utilization of opioid-based regimens have likely contributed to the growing opioid epidemic. The significant risk of morbidity, mortality, and dependence secondary to opioid medications have increased the interest in nonopioid medications, including cannabinoid-based pain regimens, in treating **** pain. This review will provide an overview on the pharmacology, drug delivery methods, clinical evidence, and safety considerations critical to understanding the potential role of cannabinoids in the treatment of **** pain. OBJECTIVES We used a validated human gut model to investigate the efficacy of DAV131A in preventing moxifloxacin-induced CDI. METHODS C. difficile (CD) spores were inoculated into two models populated with pooled human faeces. Moxifloxacin was instilled (43 mg/L, once daily, 7 days) alongside DAV131A (5 g in 18 mL PBS, three times daily, 14 days, Model A), or PBS (18 mL, three times daily, 14 days, Model B). Selected gut microbiota populations, CD total counts, spore counts, cytotoxin titre and antimicrobial concentrations (HPLC) were monitored daily. We monitored for reduced susceptibility of CD to moxifloxacin. Growth of CD in faecal filtrate and medium in the presence/absence of DAV131A, or in medium pre-treated with DAV131A, was also investigated. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/elacridar-gf120918.html RESULTS DAV131A instillation reduced active moxifloxacin levels to below the limit of detection (50 ng/mL), and prevented microbiota disruption, excepting Bacteroides fragilis group populations, which declined by ∼3 log10 cfu/mL.   • INTRODUCTION A critical anti D antibody titre, defined for the conventional tube method of Indirect Coomb's test (ICT), when employed in the more sensitive column method could result in unnecessary referrals and frequent obstetric doppler scans. This study aimed to compare anti D titres by tube and column method in antenatal mothers, to assess their correlation with fetal anemia and to determine a critical titre for the column method. METHODS Forty six antenatal mothers with anti D antibody were included in the study. Antibody titration was performed by serial twofold dilution of serum by both column and tube method and were correlated with middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA PSV) measurement by Doppler ultrasonography. Receiver operating curve (ROC) was used to determine the cut-offs for critical titre by tube and column method in predicting fetal anemia. RESULTS Column method had a median titre 3 fold higher than tube method. There was a significant association between fetal anemia by USG with median critical titres determined for both column (p = 0.031) and tube method (p = 0.016). ROC analysis showed the cut off for critical titres in column method as 64 with 90 % sensitivity, 72.7 % specificity and 75.38 % accuracy. CONCLUSIONS The use of critical titre for anti D antibody, defined for the tube method, when applied to the column agglutination method would lead to increased referrals to specialized fetal medicine centres. Rather, an Anti D titre of 64 by column method can predict the likelihood of fetal anemia and should be considered as the critical titre to guide patient referrals. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine taste function in patients who reported improvement in their pain level after treatment to determine if pain reduction is associated with change in taste function in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). STUDY DESIGN This retrospective study of patients with BMS was conducted at a private oral medicine clinic. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients with BMS (31 females and 8 males; mean age 56.1 ± 9.4 years) reported improvement in their pain in 1 to 22 months after the initial visit (mean 5.13 ± 4.18). The most commonly used medication was clonazepam 0.25 to 0.5 mg/day. Twenty-eight patients were treated with a combination of medications. "Salt" and "bitter" responses at the fungiform papillae were increased after treatment (P = .026 and P = .044, respectively). On Day 2 of admission, she was confused (Glasgow Coma Scale score 10 points) and had fever, muscle weakness in her right arm and leg, stiff neck, and roving eye movement. We detected EBV in a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. The magnetic resonance imaging of her brain revealed dural enhancement and right parietal and temporal lobe lesions. She was treated with acyclovir and high-dose steroid therapy. She responded well to treatment, recovered without neurologic sequelae, and was discharged home on Day 12. Our experience suggests that PCR detection of EBV DNA in CSF may be useful in diagnosing EBV encephalitis and that prognosis may be associated with an area of the brain that is affected and the time from symptom onset to starting treatment.
    INTRODUCTION A critical anti D antibody titre, defined for the conventional tube method of Indirect Coomb's test (ICT), when employed in the more sensitive column method could result in unnecessary referrals and frequent obstetric doppler scans. This study aimed to compare anti D titres by tube and column method in antenatal mothers, to assess their correlation with fetal anemia and to determine a critical titre for the column method. METHODS Forty six antenatal mothers with anti D antibody were included in the study. Antibody titration was performed by serial twofold dilution of serum by both column and tube method and were correlated with middle cerebral artery peak systolic velocity (MCA PSV) measurement by Doppler ultrasonography. Receiver operating curve (ROC) was used to determine the cut-offs for critical titre by tube and column method in predicting fetal anemia. RESULTS Column method had a median titre 3 fold higher than tube method. There was a significant association between fetal anemia by USG with median critical titres determined for both column (p = 0.031) and tube method (p = 0.016). ROC analysis showed the cut off for critical titres in column method as 64 with 90 % sensitivity, 72.7 % specificity and 75.38 % accuracy. CONCLUSIONS The use of critical titre for anti D antibody, defined for the tube method, when applied to the column agglutination method would lead to increased referrals to specialized fetal medicine centres. Rather, an Anti D titre of 64 by column method can predict the likelihood of fetal anemia and should be considered as the critical titre to guide patient referrals. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine taste function in patients who reported improvement in their pain level after treatment to determine if pain reduction is associated with change in taste function in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). STUDY DESIGN This retrospective study of patients with BMS was conducted at a private oral medicine clinic. RESULTS Thirty-nine patients with BMS (31 females and 8 males; mean age 56.1 ± 9.4 years) reported improvement in their pain in 1 to 22 months after the initial visit (mean 5.13 ± 4.18). The most commonly used medication was clonazepam 0.25 to 0.5 mg/day. Twenty-eight patients were treated with a combination of medications. METHODS We induced CPSP in rats by thoracotomy and screened for rats with or without depression-like phenotype by hierarchical cluster analysis based on the results of depression-related behavioral experiments. Subsequently, rats were intraperitoneally injected with ketamine (20 mg/kg) and were evaluated by mechanical withdrawal threshold, cold hyperalgesia test, sucrose preference test, forced swimming test, and open field test. The inflammatory-related cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, nuclear factor-kappaB), oxidative stress parameters (superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde, glutathione, catalase), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in rat hippocampus were detected. RESULTS In the hippocampus of rats with the comorbidity of CPSP and depression, IL-1, IL-6, TNF-α, nuclear factor-kappaB, and malondialdehyde were significantly increased, while superoxide dismutase, glutathione, catalase, and BDNF were significantly decreased. In a chronic study, repeated treatment with 10 mg/kg of amitifadine continued to reduce remifentanil self-administration, even after the cessation of treatment. However, amitifadine was not found to attenuate the rise in remifentanil self-administration with continued access. This study and our earlier one showed that the 10 mg/kg amitifadine dose did not significantly affect food motivated responding. Amitifadine did not attenuate remifentanil-induced antinociception as measured on the hot plate test but extended and maintained antinociceptive effects. CONCLUSIONS These studies show the promise of amitifadine as a treatment for countering opiate self-administration for adjunctive use with opioids for analgesia. Our objective for this approach was to determine the long-term impact of acute restraint stress and heroin self-administration on stress reactivity and basic reward processes. METHODS We used 2-h acute restraint stress paired with an odor stimulus to condition a stress cue (CS) for testing of subsequent stress reactivity in a burying task and remaintenance, and relapse to heroin seeking.Regulation of gene expression is fundamental for cellular function. In this review, we highlight the current molecular strategies used for high-level gene expression techniques commonly utilized in basic and applied microbiology.The prevalence of stomatitis, especially that caused by Candida albicans, has highlighted the need for new antifungal agents. We previously found that a type of quaternary ammonium salts, dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate (DMADDM), incorporated in dental materials inhibited the growth and hyphal development of C. albicans. However, how the quaternary ammonium salts inhibited the fungal pathogens and whether the oral condition, such as salivary pH variation under different diseases, can affect the antimicrobial capacity of quaternary ammonium salts is unknown. This study evaluated the antifungal effects of DMADDM at different pH in vitro and in vivo. A pH-dependent antifungal effect of DMADDM was observed in planktonic and biofilm growth. DMADDM enhanced antifungal activity at alkaline pH. Two pH-regulated genes (PHR1/PHR2) of C. albicans were correlated with the pH-dependent antifungal effects of DMADDM. The PHR1/PHR2 genes and pH values regulated the zeta potential of C. albicans, which then influenced the binding between C.

This review updates a previous review on how estrogens regulate metabolism and mitochondrial function that was published in 2017. Estrogens are produced by ovaries and adrenals, and in lesser amounts by adipose, breast stromal, and brain tissues. At the cellular level, the mechanisms by which estrogens regulate diverse cellular functions including reproduction and behavior is by binding to estrogen receptors α, β (ERα and ERβ) and G-protein coupled ER (GPER1). ERα and ERβ are transcription factors that bind genomic and mitochondrial DNA to regulate gene transcription. A small proportion of ERα and ERβ interact with plasma membrane-associated signaling proteins to activate intracellular signaling cascades that ultimately alter transcriptional responses, including mitochondrial morphology and function. Although the mechanisms and targets by which estrogens act directly and indirectly to regulate mitochondrial function are not fully elucidated, it is clear that estradiol regulates mitochondrial metabolism and morphology via nuclear and mitochondrial-mediated events, including stimulation of nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) transcription that will be reviewed here. Using a mobile application, individuals with stroke were followed during 6 consecutive days, and were prompted at 10 random moments daily to fill in a digital questionnaire about their momentary fatigue and current activity type of activity, perceived effort and enjoyment, and physical activity levels. RESULTS Based on all completed digital questionnaires (N=1013), multilevel regression analyses showed that fatigue was significantly associated with type of activity and that fatigue was higher when participants had engaged in physical activity. Fatigue was also higher during activities perceived as more effortful and during less enjoyable activities. Time-lagged analyses showed that fatigue was also predicted by physical activity and perceived effort earlier during the day. Importantly, the relationship between these daily activity characteristics and fatigue differed substantially across individuals. CONCLUSIONS This study illustrates the need for ESM to design personalized rehabilitation programs and to capture fatigue and other patient-reported outcomes in daily life. OBJECTIVE To conduct a scoping review on classifications of mild stroke based on stroke severity assessments and/or clinical signs and symptoms reported in the literature. When journals published more than 40 RCTs, a sample of 40 trials was randomly extracted, preserving the proportions among years. Indexing in PubMed, country of journal publication, and dates of submission or acceptance were also recorded for each journal. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The PEDro (Physiotherapy Evidence Database) scale and duration of the peer review. RESULTS Four hundred ten RCTs were included. The mean PEDro score of articles published in non-Beall, DOAJ journals was higher than those published in Beall journals (mean score ± SD, 5.8±1.7 vs 4.5±1.5; P less then .001), with the differences increasing when the indexing in PubMed was also considered (6.5±1.5 vs 4.4±1.5; P less then .001). The peer review duration was significantly longer in non-Beall than in Beall journals (mean duration [d] ± SD, 145.2±92.9 vs 45.4±38.8; P less then .001) and in journals indexed in PubMed than in nonindexed journals (136.6±100.7 vs 60.4±55.7; P less then .001). Indexing in PubMed was the strongest independent variable associated with the PEDro score (adjusted R2=0.182), but noninclusion on Beall's list explained an additional, albeit small, portion of the PEDro score variance (cumulative adjusted R2=0.214). CONCLUSIONS Potentially predatory journals publish lower-quality trials and have a shorter peer review process than non-Beall journals included in the DOAJ database.

This review updates a previous review on how estrogens regulate metabolism and mitochondrial function that was published in 2017. Estrogens are produced by ovaries and adrenals, and in lesser amounts by adipose, breast stromal, and brain tissues. At the cellular level, the mechanisms by which estrogens regulate diverse cellular functions including reproduction and behavior is by binding to estrogen receptors α, β (ERα and ERβ) and G-protein coupled ER (GPER1). ERα and ERβ are transcription factors that bind genomic and mitochondrial DNA to regulate gene transcription. A small proportion of ERα and ERβ interact with plasma membrane-associated signaling proteins to activate intracellular signaling cascades that ultimately alter transcriptional responses, including mitochondrial morphology and function. Although the mechanisms and targets by which estrogens act directly and indirectly to regulate mitochondrial function are not fully elucidated, it is clear that estradiol regulates mitochondrial metabolism and morphology via nuclear and mitochondrial-mediated events, including stimulation of nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) transcription that will be reviewed here. NRF-1 is a transcription factor that interacts with coactivators including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma, coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α) to regulate nuclear-encoded mitochondrial genes. One NRF-1 target is TFAM that binds mtDNA to regulate its transcription. Nuclear-encoded miRNA and lncRNA regulate mtDNA-encoded and nuclear-encoded transcripts that regulate mitochondrial function, thus acting as anterograde signals. Other estrogen-regulated mitochondrial activities including bioenergetics, oxygen consumption rate (OCR), and extracellular acidification (ECAR), are reviewed. V.OBJECTIVE To advance our understanding of poststroke fatigue by investigating its momentary and time-lagged relationship with daily activities. DESIGN Longitudinal observational study using the experience sampling method (ESM). Using a mobile application, individuals with stroke were followed during 6 consecutive days, and were prompted at 10 random moments daily to fill in a digital questionnaire about their momentary fatigue and current activity type of activity, perceived effort and enjoyment, and physical activity levels. RESULTS Based on all completed digital questionnaires (N=1013), multilevel regression analyses showed that fatigue was significantly associated with type of activity and that fatigue was higher when participants had engaged in physical activity. Fatigue was also higher during activities perceived as more effortful and during less enjoyable activities. Time-lagged analyses showed that fatigue was also predicted by physical activity and perceived effort earlier during the day. Importantly, the relationship between these daily activity characteristics and fatigue differed substantially across individuals. CONCLUSIONS This study illustrates the need for ESM to design personalized rehabilitation programs and to capture fatigue and other patient-reported outcomes in daily life. Circadian rhythm manipulations are potentially effective non-pharmacological strategies in the management of central nervous system insults. In our previous study, we demonstrated the efficacy of short photoperiod regime (SPR; 06/18 hr light-dark cycle) in establishing functional recovery in ventral subicular lesion (VSL) rats. The present study further demonstrates the efficacy of SPR in mitigating anxiety and depression as well as facilitating socio-cognitive behavior in VSL rats. VSL elevated the basal plasma corticosterone levels, increased anxiety, anhedonia, and behavioral despair with decreased self-care. The VSL rats also exhibited a considerable degree of impaired social cognition, in terms of altered social preference and social novelty. Exposure to SPR for 21 days mitigated the anxiety- and depressive-like phenotypes as well as improved social cognition significantly. Thus, the study demonstrated the effectiveness of SPR strategy in reversing most of the behavioral deficits caused by VSL. SPR, perhaps, would have regulated the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis responsiveness as we observed a decrease in plasma corticosterone levels following SPR in VSL rats. The study implies the need for developing a task-dependent SPR strategy to achieve complete behavioral recovery as the functional demands of each behavior is distinct. In addition, downregulation of circRNA_103762 promoted CHOP expression and inhibited multidrug resistance (MDR) in NSCLC. CONCLUSION Together, we demonstrated that circRNA_103762 is upregulated in NSCLC and functions as an oncogene in NSCLC, and circRNA_103762 enhanced MDR by inhibited CHOP expression in NSCLC cells. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to investigate construct validity of the DC/TMD for children. A baseline one-factor model was compared against a two-factor (Model 2) and a seven-factor (Model 3) models based on the original DC/TMD. Root mean squared error of approximation (RMSEA), comparative fit index (CFI), chi-square, change in chi-square and Cronbach's α were used to analyse the data. All analyses were performed in STATA© version 13.0. RESULTS Items of the DC/TMD were reduced, "history time" was changed to 2 weeks, pain intensity was assessed through a face scale, and language was adapted to be better understood by children. The amount of muscle pressure was maintained as in the original DC/TMD Axis I. The CFA led to a two- and a seven-factor model, with good fit. The internal consistency of Model 2 was .91 and of Model 3, .94. CONCLUSION The results of this study provide evidence to support a seven-factor representation of the DC/TMD Axis I for 7- to 11-year-old children, as well as a two-factor structure. Such findings will begin to provide researchers with confidence in the properties of this instrument when considering its inclusion in clinical research. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

  • Atomic layer deposition (ALD) on mechanically exfoliated 2D layered materials spontaneously produces network patterns of metal oxide nanoparticles in triangular and linear deposits on the basal surface. The network patterns formed under a range of ALD conditions and were independent of the orientation of the substrate in the ALD reactor. The patterns were produced on MoS2 or HOPG when either tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium or bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)manganese were used as precursors, suggesting that the phenomenon is general for 2D materials. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence, prior to deposition, of dislocation networks along the basal plane of mechanically exfoliated 2D flakes, indicating that periodical basal plane defects related to disruptions in the van der Waals stacking of layers, such as perfect line dislocations and triangular extended stacking faults networks, introduce a surface reactivity landscape that leads to the emergence of patterned deposition.A long-distance hop of diffusive nanoparticles (NPs) in crowded environments was commonly considered unlikely, and its characteristics remain unclear. In this work, we experimentally identify the occurrence of the intermittent hops of large NPs in crowded entangled poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions, which are attributed to thermally induced activated hopping. We show that the diffusion of NPs in crowded solutions is considered as a superposition of the activated hopping and the reptation of the polymer solution. Such activated hopping becomes significant when either the PEO molecular weight is large enough or the NP size is relatively small. We reveal that the time-dependent non-Gaussianity of the NP diffusion is determined by the competition of the short-time relaxation of a polymer entanglement strand, the activated hopping, and the long-time reptation. We propose an exponential scaling law τhop/τe ∼ exp(d/dt) to characterize the hopping time scale, suggesting a linear dependence of the activated hopping energy barrier on the dimensionless NP size. The activated hopping motion can only be observed between the onset time scale of the short-time relaxation of local entanglement strands and the termination time scale of the long-time relaxation. Our findings on activated hopping provide new insights into long-distance transportation of NPs in crowded biological environments, which is essential to the delivery and targeting of nanomedicines.Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) plays a fundamental role in the carbon cycle by fixing the atmospheric CO2 used in photosynthesis. Rubisco is all the more remarkable because it must catalyze some difficult multistep reaction chemistry involving proton transfers within the one active site. In the present study, we have used Kohn-Sham density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31G* level with basis set superposition error and dispersion corrections (B3LYP-gCP-D3) to examine the possibility that the proton transfers can take place through molecular wires (including active-site water molecules) via the classical Grotthuss proton-shuttle mechanism. The results support an essential role for water molecules found in the crystal structures of Rubisco complexes as facilitators of proton transport in all the rate-limiting (catalytic) reaction steps through a network of short proton wires within the Rubisco active site. We suggest that completion of the initial product turnover (cycle) requires two excess protons produced in the initial carbamylation that is required for Rubisco activation. By use of proton wires, a large number of reaction steps may be accommodated within a single active site without necessitating the input of excessive conformational strain energy arising from the movement of residue side chains into positions where direct protonation of substrates can occur. The involvement of the identified types of proton wires in the kinetic mechanism is capable of providing a unique explanation for various experimental observations, including deuterium isotope effects and the results of site-directed mutagenesis experiments, and may thus provide a realistic solution to the problem of Rubisco's challenging chemistry.Video-rate super-resolution imaging through biological tissue can visualize and track biomolecule interplays and transportations inside cellular organisms. Structured illumination microscopy allows for wide-field super resolution observation of biological samples but is limited by the strong extinction of light by biological tissues, which restricts the imaging depth and degrades its imaging resolution. Here we report a photon upconversion scheme using lanthanide-doped nanoparticles for wide-field super-resolution imaging through the biological transparent window, featured by near-infrared and low-irradiance nonlinear structured illumination. We demonstrate that the 976 nm excitation and 800 nm up-converted emission can mitigate the aberration.     Atomic layer deposition (ALD) on mechanically exfoliated 2D layered materials spontaneously produces network patterns of metal oxide nanoparticles in triangular and linear deposits on the basal surface. The network patterns formed under a range of ALD conditions and were independent of the orientation of the substrate in the ALD reactor. The patterns were produced on MoS2 or HOPG when either tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium or bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)manganese were used as precursors, suggesting that the phenomenon is general for 2D materials. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence, prior to deposition, of dislocation networks along the basal plane of mechanically exfoliated 2D flakes, indicating that periodical basal plane defects related to disruptions in the van der Waals stacking of layers, such as perfect line dislocations and triangular extended stacking faults networks, introduce a surface reactivity landscape that leads to the emergence of patterned deposition.A long-distance hop of diffusive nanoparticles (NPs) in crowded environments was commonly considered unlikely, and its characteristics remain unclear. In this work, we experimentally identify the occurrence of the intermittent hops of large NPs in crowded entangled poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions, which are attributed to thermally induced activated hopping. We show that the diffusion of NPs in crowded solutions is considered as a superposition of the activated hopping and the reptation of the polymer solution. Such activated hopping becomes significant when either the PEO molecular weight is large enough or the NP size is relatively small. We reveal that the time-dependent non-Gaussianity of the NP diffusion is determined by the competition of the short-time relaxation of a polymer entanglement strand, the activated hopping, and the long-time reptation. We propose an exponential scaling law τhop/τe ∼ exp(d/dt) to characterize the hopping time scale, suggesting a linear dependence of the activated hopping energy barrier on the dimensionless NP size. The activated hopping motion can only be observed between the onset time scale of the short-time relaxation of local entanglement strands and the termination time scale of the long-time relaxation. Our findings on activated hopping provide new insights into long-distance transportation of NPs in crowded biological environments, which is essential to the delivery and targeting of nanomedicines.Ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) plays a fundamental role in the carbon cycle by fixing the atmospheric CO2 used in photosynthesis. Rubisco is all the more remarkable because it must catalyze some difficult multistep reaction chemistry involving proton transfers within the one active site. In the present study, we have used Kohn-Sham density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-31G* level with basis set superposition error and dispersion corrections (B3LYP-gCP-D3) to examine the possibility that the proton transfers can take place through molecular wires (including active-site water molecules) via the classical Grotthuss proton-shuttle mechanism. The results support an essential role for water molecules found in the crystal structures of Rubisco complexes as facilitators of proton transport in all the rate-limiting (catalytic) reaction steps through a network of short proton wires within the Rubisco active site. We suggest that completion of the initial product turnover (cycle) requires two excess protons produced in the initial carbamylation that is required for Rubisco activation. By use of proton wires, a large number of reaction steps may be accommodated within a single active site without necessitating the input of excessive conformational strain energy arising from the movement of residue side chains into positions where direct protonation of substrates can occur. The involvement of the identified types of proton wires in the kinetic mechanism is capable of providing a unique explanation for various experimental observations, including deuterium isotope effects and the results of site-directed mutagenesis experiments, and may thus provide a realistic solution to the problem of Rubisco's challenging chemistry.Video-rate super-resolution imaging through biological tissue can visualize and track biomolecule interplays and transportations inside cellular organisms. RESULTS A diet rich in fruits and vegetables was significantly associated with a reduced risk of overall TC (OR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.39, 0.92; P trend = 0.02). Compared to younger women, a stronger protective effect was observed among women ≥ 50 years of age in overall TC and papillary TC risk. A diet rich in starchy foods and desserts was positively and negatively associated with an overall TC risk among men and women respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our study found a significant negative association between diet patterns rich in fruits and vegetables and TC risk, especially among women aged 50 years or older. While high in starchy foods and desserts may be positively and negatively associated with TC risk among men and women respectively, these results require confirmation in other populations. Peripheral blood samples were collected from a total of 322 consecutive PDAC patients and 265 controls with a family history of PDAC. Five µl of serum samples were analyzed using PESI-MS system. The mass spectra from each specimen were then fed into machine learning algorithms to discriminate between control and cancer cases. A total of 587 serum samples were analyzed. The sensitivity of the machine learning algorithm using PESI-MS profiles to identify PDAC is 90.8% with specificity of 91.7% (95% CI 83.9%-97.4% and 82.8%-97.7% respectively). To evaluate diagnostic potential, expression levels of hsa_circ_0037515, hsa_circ_0037516, and ABCA3 were measured by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction; differences in expression levels were analyzed using the paired t-test, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were established. Our results demonstrate that ABCA3 mRNA, hsa_circ_0037515, and hsa_circ_0037516 are significantly downregulated in 61 paired samples of NSCLC compared to adjacent lung tissues (P less then 0.01), and that the areas under the ROC curves for the two circRNAs (0.81 and 0.82, respectively) are indicative of diagnostic value. Furthermore, the significance was improved by considering the two circRNAs in combination (area under the ROC curve, 0.90). For a third group 7 g/l albumin was supplemented to modified Custodiol-N (CDA, n=8). During four hours of EVLP pulmonary gas exchange and activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (AP) in perfusate were recorded. RESULTS Lungs that underwent EVLP with modified Custodiol-N showed significantly higher oxygen capacity (ΔpO2 averaged over four hours of EVLP SS 236.28 ± 47.26 mmHg, CD 402.79 ± 30.33 mmHg, CDA 414.86 ± 9.77 mmHg) than lungs perfused with STEEN SolutionTM. The addition of albumin did not have a significant effect on lung function but these lungs showed lower wet/dry ratio. CONCLUSION In a porcine DCD model of 9 hours CSP followed by four hours of EVLP the use of modified Custodiol-N as perfusion solution was feasible and associated with higher oxygen capacity than STEEN SolutionTM. Lithium (Li) isotopes are useful for understanding water-rock interactions, but there are few data available for groundwater aquifers. Here we present a Li isotope dataset for rainfall and groundwater samples from a carbonate island aquifer system Rottnest Island, Western Australia. This dataset was complemented by strontium (Sr) isotope and major and trace element data for groundwaters, and leaching experiments on bedrock samples. The δ7Li values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of fresh groundwaters ranged from +23 to +36‰ and 0.709167 to 0.709198, respectively. Mass balance calculations indicated that silicate weathering supplied ~60 and 70% of dissolved Li and Sr in fresh groundwaters, respectively, with the remainder provided by atmospheric input, and carbonate weathering; for major cations, the majority of calcium and sodium (Na) are supplied by carbonate weathering and atmospheric input, respectively. The estimated low proportion of Sr produced by carbonate weathering was surprising in a carbonate aquifer, and the 87Sr/86Sr data indicated that the silicate Sr source had low Rb/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. There was an increase in the maximum δ7Li values in fresh groundwaters (+36‰) relative to the maximum value in rainfall and seawater (ca. +31‰). As clay minerals are undersaturated in fresh groundwaters, this increase may be explained by Li isotope fractionation associated with ion-exchange reactions on clays and iron(oxy)hydroxides. In the more saline groundwaters, the minimum δ7Li values decreased with depth to +14.5‰, suggesting increased silicate mineral dissolution in the deeper aquifer. These results reveal the importance of water-rock interactions in a coastal carbonate aquifer, and demonstrate the usefulness of Li isotopes for tracing weathering reactions in an environmental setting where traditional weathering tracers, such as sodium and Sr isotopes, are less appropriate. The results demonstrated that the ZY-16 strain could produce various lignocellulolytic enzymes, containing cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase, protease, and ligninase, enhancing the hydrolysis of citrus peel wastes. Molecular distillation removes antimicrobial limonene, which could inhibit bioflocculant production. The optimal fermentation conditions with the highest bioflocculant yield (3.49 g/L) were 38.79 g/L of CPW, 35.54 °C, and pH 4.48. Furthermore, the bioflocculant was used to eliminate microcystins for the first time, and the highest removal efficiency (90.05%) was achieved at a pH of 3.0, after 800 mg/L of bioflocculant was added into the microcystins solution (10 mg/L) for 60 min. The role of urban forests in Hg biogeochemistry has been understudied in cities without historical mining or current coal combustion. This study aimed to quantify total Hg concentrations and pools in urban forests to determine whether adjacent land-use impacts Hg accumulation. Three cities in the northeastern United States were studied Hartford, Connecticut; Poughkeepsie, New York; and Springfield, Massachusetts. We identified ~20 urban forests sites in a ~10 km by ~10 km grid for each city and sampled foliage and soil at each site. Foliage from Populus exhibited significantly lower Hg concentrations (15.6 ± 2.1 ng g-1) than mean foliar Hg concentrations (23.7 ± 0.6 ng g-1) but most deciduous genera had comparable concentrations. Average forest floor Hg concentrations (195 ± 21 ng g-1) and Hg pools (1.9 ± 0.5 mg m-2) were similar to previous, non-urban studies in the region. Average A horizon (182 ± 19 ng g-1) and B horizon (125 ± 14 ng g-1) Hg concentrations were double those of regional forest soils. Mineral soil Hg pools for the top 30 cm (49 ± 6 mg m-2) averaged two to ten times higher than rural, montane forests in the region. Soil pH, LOI, and %clay were poorly correlated with mineral soil Hg concentrations. Instead, highest foliar and soil Hg concentrations and pools were in urban forests adjacent to high and medium intensity developed areas in Springfield and Hartford. To differentiate the impact of land-uses not captured by the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) system, we implemented new land-use categories. Industrial areas had highest foliar and soil Hg concentrations and pools of any land use. Our results show increasing land-use increases Hg accumulation in urban forests. As one of the important nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution sources of waters, the paddy water N and P runoff losses are still poorly understood in the double rice cropping system under the interaction of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. In the subtropical hilly region of China, we conducted a 1.5-year continuous and high-frequency monitoring of paddy water N and P concentrations, runoff N and P losses, and grain yield in a double rice-cropping system with different chemical fertilizer and pesticide application rates. The results showed that the high-risk periods for N loss were in the first 5 days after the base fertilizer (BF) application and the first 10 days after the topdressing fertilizer application in both early and late rice seasons, while the high-risk periods for P loss were in the first 5 days after BF application in the early rice season and the first 15 days after BF application in the late rice season. The N and P runoff losses in the early rice season were greater than those in the late rice season, due to that the N and P fertilizers use efficiencies were lower, and thus paddy water N and P concentrations were higher in the early rice season.

Here we present a Li isotope dataset for rainfall and groundwater samples from a carbonate island aquifer system Rottnest Island, Western Australia. This dataset was complemented by strontium (Sr) isotope and major and trace element data for groundwaters, and leaching experiments on bedrock samples. The δ7Li values and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of fresh groundwaters ranged from +23 to +36‰ and 0.709167 to 0.709198, respectively. Mass balance calculations indicated that silicate weathering supplied ~60 and 70% of dissolved Li and Sr in fresh groundwaters, respectively, with the remainder provided by atmospheric input, and carbonate weathering; for major cations, the majority of calcium and sodium (Na) are supplied by carbonate weathering and atmospheric input, respectively. The estimated low proportion of Sr produced by carbonate weathering was surprising in a carbonate aquifer, and the 87Sr/86Sr data indicated that the silicate Sr source had low Rb/Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratios. There was an increase in the maximum δ7Li values in fresh groundwaters (+36‰) relative to the maximum value in rainfall and seawater (ca. +31‰). As clay minerals are undersaturated in fresh groundwaters, this increase may be explained by Li isotope fractionation associated with ion-exchange reactions on clays and iron(oxy)hydroxides. In the more saline groundwaters, the minimum δ7Li values decreased with depth to +14.5‰, suggesting increased silicate mineral dissolution in the deeper aquifer. These results reveal the importance of water-rock interactions in a coastal carbonate aquifer, and demonstrate the usefulness of Li isotopes for tracing weathering reactions in an environmental setting where traditional weathering tracers, such as sodium and Sr isotopes, are less appropriate. Crown V. All rights reserved.In this study, the mechanism for converting citrus peel wastes (CPW) into bioflocculants using Alcaligenes faecalis subsp. phenolicus ZY-16 was analysed. The results demonstrated that the ZY-16 strain could produce various lignocellulolytic enzymes, containing cellulase, hemicellulase, pectinase, protease, and ligninase, enhancing the hydrolysis of citrus peel wastes. Molecular distillation removes antimicrobial limonene, which could inhibit bioflocculant production. The optimal fermentation conditions with the highest bioflocculant yield (3.49 g/L) were 38.79 g/L of CPW, 35.54 °C, and pH 4.48. Furthermore, the bioflocculant was used to eliminate microcystins for the first time, and the highest removal efficiency (90.05%) was achieved at a pH of 3.0, after 800 mg/L of bioflocculant was added into the microcystins solution (10 mg/L) for 60 min. The role of urban forests in Hg biogeochemistry has been understudied in cities without historical mining or current coal combustion. This study aimed to quantify total Hg concentrations and pools in urban forests to determine whether adjacent land-use impacts Hg accumulation. Three cities in the northeastern United States were studied Hartford, Connecticut; Poughkeepsie, New York; and Springfield, Massachusetts. We identified ~20 urban forests sites in a ~10 km by ~10 km grid for each city and sampled foliage and soil at each site. Foliage from Populus exhibited significantly lower Hg concentrations (15.6 ± 2.1 ng g-1) than mean foliar Hg concentrations (23.7 ± 0.6 ng g-1) but most deciduous genera had comparable concentrations. Average forest floor Hg concentrations (195 ± 21 ng g-1) and Hg pools (1.9 ± 0.5 mg m-2) were similar to previous, non-urban studies in the region. Average A horizon (182 ± 19 ng g-1) and B horizon (125 ± 14 ng g-1) Hg concentrations were double those of regional forest soils. Mineral soil Hg pools for the top 30 cm (49 ± 6 mg m-2) averaged two to ten times higher than rural, montane forests in the region. Soil pH, LOI, and %clay were poorly correlated with mineral soil Hg concentrations. Instead, highest foliar and soil Hg concentrations and pools were in urban forests adjacent to high and medium intensity developed areas in Springfield and Hartford. To differentiate the impact of land-uses not captured by the National Land Cover Database (NLCD) system, we implemented new land-use categories. Industrial areas had highest foliar and soil Hg concentrations and pools of any land use. Our results show increasing land-use increases Hg accumulation in urban forests. As one of the important nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) pollution sources of waters, the paddy water N and P runoff losses are still poorly understood in the double rice cropping system under the interaction of chemical fertilizer and pesticide. In the subtropical hilly region of China, we conducted a 1.5-year continuous and high-frequency monitoring of paddy water N and P concentrations, runoff N and P losses, and grain yield in a double rice-cropping system with different chemical fertilizer and pesticide application rates. The results showed that the high-risk periods for N loss were in the first 5 days after the base fertilizer (BF) application and the first 10 days after the topdressing fertilizer application in both early and late rice seasons, while the high-risk periods for P loss were in the first 5 days after BF application in the early rice season and the first 15 days after BF application in the late rice season. The N and P runoff losses in the early rice season were greater than those in the late rice season, due to that the N and P fertilizers use efficiencies were lower, and thus paddy water N and P concentrations were higher in the early rice season.
