  • The aim of this study is to investigate whether Syndecan-1 (SDC-1), an indicator of endothelial glycocalyx injury, would increase the risk of hypercoagulable state and thrombosis in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS). The prospective study was conducted among patients undergoing renal biopsy in the Department of Nephrology in our hospital from May to September 2018. We enrolled in patients with NS as the experimental group and patients with normal serum creatinine and proteinuria less than 1 g as the control group. Patients' characteristics including age, sex, laboratory test results and blood samples were collected for each patient. The blood samples were taken before the renal biopsy. The samples were immediately processed and frozen at -80°C for later measurement of Syndecan-1. One hundred and thirty-six patients were enrolled in the study. Patients with NS and hypercoagulability had a higher level of SDC-1 compared with control group. Patients with membranous nephropathy occupied the highest SDC-1 level (P = 0.012). Logistic regression showed that highly increased level of SDC-1 (>53.18 ng/ml) was an independent predicator for predicting hypercoagulable state. The elevated level of SDC-1 indicated that endothelial injury, combined with its role of accelerating hypercoagulable state, might be considered of vital importance in the pathophysiological progress of thrombosis formation in patients with NS.

    Safety of ketorolac was measured by significant bleeding complications and need for supplementary oxygen. Efficacy was assessed through bleeding, Face Legs Activity Cry Consolability (FLACC) scale, and opioid dose.

    Length of stay was similar for both groups (control group 38.5 hours [95% CI 3.6-43.3] versus study group 37.6 hours [95% CI 31.3-44.0],
    = .84). There were no significant differences in all postoperative FLACC scales. The mean dose of opioid rescue medication measured as morphine milligram equivalents did not differ between groups (
    = .56). Significant postoperative hemorrhage was not observed.

Studies have shown that despite this, many patients do not have adequate care planning, including end of life planning. It is thought that the accessibility of information outside of clinical encounters and individual factors and/or beliefs may influence the patient's perception of disease.

    The objective of this study was to evaluate if patient understanding of treatment goals matched the provider and if there were areas of discrepancy. If a discrepancy was found, the survey inquired further into more specific aspects.

    A questionnaire-based survey was performed at a cancer hospital outpatient clinic. 100 consecutive and consenting patients who had stage IV non-curable lung, gastrointestinal (GI), or other cancer were included in the study. Patients must have had at least 2 visits with their oncologist.

    Participants in the feasibility stage of the Chronic Headache Education and Self-management Study (CHESS) (n = 130) completed measures three times during a 12-week prospective cohort study. Data quality, measurement acceptability, reliability, validity, responsiveness to change, and score interpretation were determined. Semi-structured cognitive interviews explored measurement relevance, acceptability, clarity, and comprehensiveness.

    Both measures were well completed with few missing items. The CHQLQ's inclusion of emotional wellbeing items increased its relevance to participant's experience of chronic headache. However, analysis of B-line artifacts generated by this modality is semi-quantitative relying on visual interpretation, and as a result, can be subject to inter-observer variability. The purpose of this study was to translate the use of a novel, quantitative lung ultrasound surface wave elastography technique (LUSWE) into the bedside assessment of pulmonary edema in patients admitted with acute congestive heart failure. B-mode lung ultrasound and LUSWE assessment of the lungs were performed using anterior and lateral intercostal spaces in the supine patient. 14 patients were evaluated at admission with reassessment performed 1-2 days after initiation of diuretic therapy. Each exam recorded the total lung B-lines, lung surface wave speeds (at 100, 150, and 200 Hz) and net fluid balance. The patient cohort experienced effective diuresis (average net fluid balance of negative 2.1 liters) with corresponding decrease in pulmonary edema visualized by B-mode ultrasound (average decrease of 13 B-Lines). In Opisthokonta eukaryotes, the biosynthesis of Neu5Ac is catalysed by the enzyme NanS. In this study, we used publicly available data of sequences of NulOs synthases to investigate its distribution within the three domains of life and its relationship with pathogenic bacteria. We mined the KEGG database and found 425 NeuB sequences. Most NeuB sequences (58.74 %) from the KEGG orthology database were classifikaryotic branch. The analysis of conserved residues showed that the synthases of Archaea and Eukarya present a mutation in one of the three catalytic residues, an E134D change, related to a Neisseria meningitidis reference sequence. We also found that the conservation profile is higher between NeuB of pathogenic bacteria and NanS of eukaryotes than between NeuB of environmental bacteria and NanS of eukaryotes. To avoid a purely subjective assessment, the principle of totality, and the principle of therapeutic adequacy should be considered. In case of uncertain prognosis, some therapeutic persistence seems reasonable. If this does not benefit the clinical condition of the child, then it may be no longer appropriate to continue the LST in case of severe disabilities. QoL is essential in medical decision-making, but is insufficient as the only criterion.

  • What happens when we unexpectedly see an attractive potential partner? Previous studies in laboratory settings suggest that the visualization of attractive and unattractive photographs influences the perception of time. The major aim of this research is to study time perception and attraction in a realistic social scenario, by investigating if changes in subjective time measured during a speed dating are associated with attraction. The duration of the dates was variable and participants had to estimate the time that passed. Among other measures, participants also rated the potential partners in terms of their physical attractiveness before and after the dates and reported if they would like to exchange contact with them. Results showed that, in a real speed dating situation, when there is a perception of the partner as being physically more attractive, women tend to overestimate the duration of that meeting, whereas men tend to underestimate its duration. Such changes may reflect evolutionary adaptations which make the human cognitive system more responsive in situations related to reproductive fitness.It is well-documented that mathematics achievement is an important predictor of many positive life outcomes like college graduation, career opportunities, salary, and even citizenship. Indeed, even a cursory glance at many educational journals and granting agencies reveals that there is a large amount of time, energy, and resources being spent on determining the best way to convey information through direct, declarative instruction. The proposed project is motivated by recent calls to expand the focus of research in mathematics education beyond direct, declarative instruction. The overarching goal of the presented experiment is to evaluate the efficacy of a novel mathematics intervention designed using principles taken from the literature on non-declarative learning. The intervention combines errorless learning and structured cue fading to help second grade students improve their understanding of symbolic magnitude. Results indicate that students who learned about symbolic magnitude using the novel intervention did better than students who were provided with extensive declarative support. We therefore undertook two cross-cultural studies examining how people in the United States and China use different scapegoating responses to re-assert a sense of control during medical uncertainty. One study was conducted prior to the pandemic and allowed us to make an initial validating and exploratory investigation of the constructs of interest. The second study, conducted during the pandemic, was confirmatory and investigated mediation path models. Across the two studies, consistent evidence emerged that, both in response to COVID-related and non-COVID-related illness scenarios, Chinese (relative to U.S.) individuals are more likely to respond by aggressing against an individual doctor, while U.S. (relative to Chinese) individuals are more likely to respond by scapegoating the medical industry/system. Further, Study 2 suggests these culture effects are mediated by differential patterns of primary and secondary control-seeking.Based on the affective events theory, this paper discusses the influence of job insecurity on employees' extra-role behavior. The mediating effect of negative emotion and the moderating effect of workplace friendship are also tested. The results of an empirical analysis, based on the data of 327 employees, show that job insecurity has a significant negative impact on employees' extra-role behavior. Negative emotion plays a mediating role in the relationship between job insecurity and extra-role behavior. Workplace friendship moderated the relationship between job insecurity and negative emotions, as well as between job insecurity and extra-role behavior. Workplace friendship also moderates the mediating effect of negative emotion on the relationship between job insecurity and extra-role behavior, that is, the higher the level of the workplace friendship is, the weaker the mediation role mentioned above will be. The research results have implications for the sustainable development of the organization.
    What happens when we unexpectedly see an attractive potential partner? Previous studies in laboratory settings suggest that the visualization of attractive and unattractive photographs influences the perception of time. The major aim of this research is to study time perception and attraction in a realistic social scenario, by investigating if changes in subjective time measured during a speed dating are associated with attraction. The duration of the dates was variable and participants had to estimate the time that passed. Among other measures, participants also rated the potential partners in terms of their physical attractiveness before and after the dates and reported if they would like to exchange contact with them. Results showed that, in a real speed dating situation, when there is a perception of the partner as being physically more attractive, women tend to overestimate the duration of that meeting, whereas men tend to underestimate its duration. Such changes may reflect evolutionary adaptations which make the human cognitive system more responsive in situations related to reproductive fitness.It is well-documented that mathematics achievement is an important predictor of many positive life outcomes like college graduation, career opportunities, salary, and even citizenship. As such, it is important for researchers and educators to help students succeed in mathematics. Although there are undoubtedly many factors that contribute to students' success in mathematics, much of the research and intervention development has focused on variations in instructional techniques. Indeed, even a cursory glance at many educational journals and granting agencies reveals that there is a large amount of time, energy, and resources being spent on determining the best way to convey information through direct, declarative instruction. The proposed project is motivated by recent calls to expand the focus of research in mathematics education beyond direct, declarative instruction. The overarching goal of the presented experiment is to evaluate the efficacy of a novel mathematics intervention designed using principles taken from the literature on non-declarative learning. The intervention combines errorless learning and structured cue fading to help second grade students improve their understanding of symbolic magnitude. Results indicate that students who learned about symbolic magnitude using the novel intervention did better than students who were provided with extensive declarative support. The objective of the current study was to detect the distribution of TNF-α- and IL-4-positive cells using immunohistochemistry within these granulomas in both infected immunocompetent (group A) and immunosuppressed (group B) New Zealand white rabbits. In the brain, labeled TNF-α immune cells were mainly located in the granuloma peripheries in group B. Granulomas examined in the kidneys of groups A and B were TNF-α positive, but were significantly different (p  0.05), was observed. IL-4 positive cells were more numerous in brain sections of group B and differed significantly (p  less then  0.05) when compared with kidneys. Granulomas were not observed in control animals (groups C and D). In conclusion, we identified TNF-α positive cells in both the brain and kidneys of immunocompetent and immunosuppressed animals; IL-4 positive cells were numerous in the brains of immunosuppressed rabbits; however, in terms of percentage were numerous in the brains of immunocompetent rabbits. Studying objectively measurable motor behaviors like finger-tapping may help advance the diagnostic methods. Twenty-five patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 15 healthy participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) measurements while tapping their index fingers. The finger-tapping (FT) task was performed by the right hand (the tapping frequency varied between 1, 2 and 4 Hz) or both hands either in synchrony or alternation (the tapping frequency varied between 1 and 2 Hz). A mixed-model ANOVA was used for between- and within-group comparisons of the task accuracy and fMRI percent signal change in the supplementary motor area (SMA) during 26-second sequences of finger-tapping. Furthermore, using seed-based correlation analyses we compared the connectivity of the SMA between the two samples. At the behavioral level, no significant group differences in FT performance between the patient and control groups was observed. The mean fMRI percent signal change of the SMA was significantly elevated at higher levels of speed in both groups. In the MDD group, an increased connectivity of the left SMA with the bilateral cortical and cerebellar motor- and vision-related regions was found. Most importantly, a decreased connectivity between the SMA and the basal ganglia was found at frequencies of 4 Hz. Our findings support the contention that, in depression, brain connectivity measures during motor performance may reveal deviant neural processes that are potentially relevant to measurable (bio)markers for individual diagnosis and treatment. Subjective improvements were observed after immunotherapy. A repeat brain MRI showed new contrast enhancement and positron emission tomography revealed left hippocampal uptake. Biopsy of the right parahippocampus yielded high-grade glioma. Five similar cases, among the 14 with unilateral hippocampal lesions on MRI, were identified in the literature whereby suspected ALE preceded the high-grade glioma diagnosis. Mixed lineage kinase 3 (MLK3) was identified as a direct and functional new target of miR-520b. This regulation was also confirmed by luciferase reporter assays. In addition, our results showed that overexpression of the MLK3 expression partially reversed the effect of miR-520b on liver cancer cell migration, indicating that MLK3 contributes to the migration in liver cancer. Two studies were conducted to investigate if the property of spatial complexity affects learning ordinal sequences. In Study 1, 46 adults made a series of judgements about two novel symbol sets (Gibson and Sunúz). The goal was to find a novel symbol set that could be ordered by spatial complexity. In Study 2, 84 adults learned to order nine novel symbols (Sunúz) with a paired comparison task, judging which symbol was 'larger' (whereby the larger symbol became physically larger as feedback), and were then asked to rank the symbols. Participants were assigned to either a condition where there was a relationship between spatial complexity and symbol order, or a condition where there was a random relationship. Of interest was whether learning an ordered list of symbols would be facilitated by the spatial complexity of the novel symbols. Findings suggest spatial complexity affected learning ability, and that pairing spatial complexity with relational information can facilitate learning ordinal sequences. This suggests that the implicit cognitive representation of number may be a more general feature of ordinal lists, and not exclusive to number per se.PURPOSE To evaluate the spatial registration and correlation of liver and tumor histopathology sections with corresponding in vivo CT and MRI using 3D, liver-specific cutting molds in a woodchuck (Marmota monax) hepatic tumor model. METHODS Five woodchucks chronically infected with woodchuck hepatitis virus following inoculation at birth and with confirmed hepatic tumors were imaged by contrast enhanced CT or MRI. Virtual 3D liver or tumor models were generated by segmentation of in vivo CT or MR imaging. A specimen-specific cavity was created inside a block containing cutting slots aligned with an imaging plane using computer-aided design software, and the final cutting molds were fabricated using a 3D printer. Livers were resected two days after initial imaging, fixed with formalin or left unfixed, inserted into the 3D molds, and cut into parallel pieces by passing a sharp blade through the parallel slots in the mold. Histopathology sections were acquired and their spatial overlap with in vivo image slices was quantified using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). RESULTS Imaging of the woodchucks revealed heterogeneous hepatic tumors of varying size, number, and location. Specimen-specific 3D molds provided accurate co-localization of histopathology of whole livers, liver lobes, and pedunculated tumors with in vivo CT and MR imaging, with or without tissue fixation. Visual inspection of histopathology sections and corresponding in vivo image slices revealed spatial registration of analogous pathologic features. The mean DSC for all specimens was 0.83+/-0.05. CONCLUSION Use of specimen-specific 3D molds for en bloc liver dissection provided strong spatial overlap and feature correspondence between in vivo image slices and histopathology sections.In order to remedy the current problem of having been buffeted by competing requirements for both protection sensitivity and quick reaction of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission lines simultaneously, a new intelligent fault identification method based on Random Forests (RF) for HVDC transmission lines is proposed. S transform is implemented to extract fault current traveling wave of 8 frequencies and calculate the fluctuation index and energy sum ratio, in which the wave index is used to identify internal and external faults, and energy sum ratio is used to identify the positive and negative pole faults occurred on the transmission line. The intelligent fault identification model of RF is established, and the fault characteristic sample set of HVDC transmission lines is constructed by using multi-scale S transform fluctuation index and multi-scale S-transform energy sum ratio. Training and testing have been carried out to identify HVDC transmission line faults. According to theoretical researches and a large number of results of simulation experiments, the proposed intelligent fault identification method based on RF for HVDC transmission lines can effectively solve the problem of protection failure caused by inaccurate identification of traditional traveling wave wavefront or wavefront data loss. It can accurately and quickly realize the identification of internal and external faults and the selection of fault poles under different fault distances and transitional resistances, and has a strong ability to withstand transitional resistance and a strong ability to resist interference.

Mixed lineage kinase 3 (MLK3) was identified as a direct and functional new target of miR-520b. This regulation was also confirmed by luciferase reporter assays. In Study 2, 84 adults learned to order nine novel symbols (Sunúz) with a paired comparison task, judging which symbol was 'larger' (whereby the larger symbol became physically larger as feedback), and were then asked to rank the symbols. Participants were assigned to either a condition where there was a relationship between spatial complexity and symbol order, or a condition where there was a random relationship. Of interest was whether learning an ordered list of symbols would be facilitated by the spatial complexity of the novel symbols. Findings suggest spatial complexity affected learning ability, and that pairing spatial complexity with relational information can facilitate learning ordinal sequences. This suggests that the implicit cognitive representation of number may be a more general feature of ordinal lists, and not exclusive to number per se.PURPOSE To evaluate the spatial registration and correlation of liver and tumor histopathology sections with corresponding in vivo CT and MRI using 3D, liver-specific cutting molds in a woodchuck (Marmota monax) hepatic tumor model. METHODS Five woodchucks chronically infected with woodchuck hepatitis virus following inoculation at birth and with confirmed hepatic tumors were imaged by contrast enhanced CT or MRI. Virtual 3D liver or tumor models were generated by segmentation of in vivo CT or MR imaging. A specimen-specific cavity was created inside a block containing cutting slots aligned with an imaging plane using computer-aided design software, and the final cutting molds were fabricated using a 3D printer. Livers were resected two days after initial imaging, fixed with formalin or left unfixed, inserted into the 3D molds, and cut into parallel pieces by passing a sharp blade through the parallel slots in the mold. Histopathology sections were acquired and their spatial overlap with in vivo image slices was quantified using the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC). RESULTS Imaging of the woodchucks revealed heterogeneous hepatic tumors of varying size, number, and location. Specimen-specific 3D molds provided accurate co-localization of histopathology of whole livers, liver lobes, and pedunculated tumors with in vivo CT and MR imaging, with or without tissue fixation. Visual inspection of histopathology sections and corresponding in vivo image slices revealed spatial registration of analogous pathologic features. The mean DSC for all specimens was 0.83+/-0.05. The intelligent fault identification model of RF is established, and the fault characteristic sample set of HVDC transmission lines is constructed by using multi-scale S transform fluctuation index and multi-scale S-transform energy sum ratio. Training and testing have been carried out to identify HVDC transmission line faults. According to theoretical researches and a large number of results of simulation experiments, the proposed intelligent fault identification method based on RF for HVDC transmission lines can effectively solve the problem of protection failure caused by inaccurate identification of traditional traveling wave wavefront or wavefront data loss. It can accurately and quickly realize the identification of internal and external faults and the selection of fault poles under different fault distances and transitional resistances, and has a strong ability to withstand transitional resistance and a strong ability to resist interference.

The offretite crystals were synthesized with a high crystallinity and hexagonal prismatic shape after only 72 h of hydrothermal treatment at 180 °C. The CTABr has dual-functions during the crystallization of offretite, viz. as structure-directing agent and as mesoporogen. The resulting offretite crystals, with a Si/Al ratio of 4.1, possess more acid sites than the conventional offretite due to their high crystallinity and hierarchical structure. The synthesized offretite is also more reactive than its conventional counterpart in the acylation of 2-methylfuran for biofuel production under non-microwave instant heating condition, giving 83.5% conversion with 100% selectivity to the desired product 2-acetyl-5-methylfuran. Hence, this amphiphile synthesis approach offers another cost-effective and alternative route for crystallizing zeolite materials that require expensive organic templates.Damage classification is an important topic in the development of structural health monitoring systems. When applied to wind-turbine foundations, it provides information about the state of the structure, helps in maintenance, and prevents catastrophic failures. A data-driven pattern-recognition methodology for structural damage classification was developed in this study. The methodology is validated with an experimental test performed in a small-scale wind-turbine foundation structure that simulates the perturbation effects caused by wind and marine waves by applying an unknown white noise signal excitation to the structure. A vibration-response methodology is selected for collecting accelerometer data from both the healthy structure and the structure subjected to four different damage scenarios. The datasets are satisfactorily classified, with performance measures over 99.9% after using the proposed damage classification methodology.Background Hearing loss remains an important global health problem that is potentially addressed through early identification of a genetic etiology, which helps to predict outcomes of hearing rehabilitation such as cochlear implantation and also to mitigate the long-term effects of comorbidities.   • We examined whether the presence or absence of different environmental stressors influenced the reproductive potential of a saltmarsh species-Plantago maritima. We focused on total seed output, seed quality, and biomass of progeny. So far, there are no studies trying to answer the question of how different saltmarsh management affects the quality of seed in saltmarsh species. For the purposes of the study, plots subjected to light mowing, light or heavy grazing, trampling, or rooting were designated in three nature reserves in Poland. On each plot, the abundance of infructescences per sq. meter was calculated. Mature infructescences were collected, and their length and number of fruit capsules were measured. The seeds obtained from fruit capsules were weighted and sown in controlled conditions. The germination rate and the final germination percentage were calculated. A representative number of sprouts were grown. After a period of 2 months, the individuals of P. maritima were harvested and their total dry mas P. maritima. In the case of habitats created anthropogenically, such as brackish saltmarshes, the role of management is crucial for their conservation. Therefore, searching for the best active protection methods is important. In light of the results obtained, extensive or rotational grazing appears to be the best form of saltmarsh management.Many animal personality traits have implicit movement-based definitions and can directly or indirectly influence ecological and evolutionary processes. It has therefore been proposed that animal movement studies could benefit from acknowledging and studying consistent interindividual differences (personality), and, conversely, animal personality studies could adopt a more quantitative representation of movement patterns.Using high-resolution tracking data of three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus), we examined the repeatability of four movement parameters commonly used in the analysis of discrete time series movement data (time stationary, step length, turning angle, burst frequency) and four behavioral parameters commonly used in animal personality studies (distance travelled, space use, time in free water, and time near objects).Fish showed repeatable interindividual differences in both movement and behavioral parameters when observed in a simple environment with two, three, or five shelters present. Moreover, individuals that spent less time stationary, took more direct paths, and less commonly burst travelled (movement parameters), were found to travel farther, explored more of the tank, and spent more time in open water (behavioral parameters).Our case study indicates that the two approaches-quantifying movement and behavioral parameters-are broadly equivalent, and we suggest that movement parameters can be viewed as "micropersonality" traits that give rise to broad-scale consistent interindividual differences in behavior. This finding has implications for both personality and movement ecology research areas. For example, the study of movement parameters may provide a robust way to analyze individual personalities in species that are difficult or impossible to study using standardized behavioral assays.Multi-level societies are complex, nested social systems where basic social groups (i.e., core units) associate in a hierarchical manner, allowing animals to adjust their group sizes in response to variables such as food availability, predation, or conspecific threat. These pressures fluctuate over time and examining the extent to which this variation affects the clustering of core units into different tiers may be instrumental in understanding the evolution of multi-level societies.The goal of our study was to determine the degree of temporal variability in interunit associations in a multi-level society of Rwenzori Angolan colobus monkey (Colobus angolensis ruwenzorii), and to determine the social and ecological factors that underlie association patterns. The C. a. ruwenzorii multi-level society consists of at least three tiers, with core units clustering into clans that share a home range in a band tier.We performed social network analyses on 21 months of association data from 13 core units (totaling 139 i one another than with other core units for 1-2 months postdispersal. The dispersal of five males from one core unit to another in a different clan co-occurred with this core unit switching its clan affiliation.By examining temporal shifts in social network structure among core units, this study shows the interconnected roles that food availability and dispersal have in shaping the C. a. ruwenzorii multi-level social system. Our findings highlight how ecological conditions can drive association patterns, impact interunit relationships, and influence social organization.Changing environments result in alterations at all levels of biological organization, from genetics to physiology to demography.   • Water deficit severely limits productivity of plants, and pose a major threat to modern agriculture system. Therefore, understanding drought adaptive mechanisms in drought-tolerant plants is imperative to formulate strategies for development of desiccation tolerance in crop plants. In present investigation, metabolic profiling employing GC-QTOF-MS/MS and HPLC-DAD was carried out to evaluate metabolic adjustments under drought stress in the xero-halophyte Salvadora persica. The metabolite profiling identified a total of 68 metabolites in S. persica leaf, including organic acids, amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, hormones, and polyphenols. The results showed that higher cellular osmolality under drought stress was accompanied by accumulations of several osmoprotectants like sugars and polyols (sucrose, glucose, mannose, galactose, erythrose, sorbose, glycerol, and myoinositol), organic acids (galactaric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid), and amino acids (alanine, phenylalanine, tyrosine). To further illustrate the roles of different nitrogen forms on root water uptake under osmotic stress, a split-root system was supplied with different nitrogen forms and osmotic stress simulated by adding 10% (w/v) polyethylene glycol (PEG, 6000). The local effects of nitrogen form and osmotic stress on root morphology, anatomical structure, root lignin content, and water uptake rate were investigated. Under osmotic stress conditions, ammonium markedly promoted the formation and elongation of the lateral root, whereas a significant decrease in numbers of lateral roots was observed under local nitrate supply. Under nitrate supply in split-root systems, osmotic stress significantly promoted root cell death and more aerenchyma formation, as well as accelerated the lignification of the root. However, osmotic stress had no negative effect on the root anatomical structure under ammonium supply. The root water uptake rate was significantly higher in split-root supplied with ammonium than nitrate under osmotic stress conditions. In conclusion, the high water uptake ability in local ammonium supply was associated with the more lateral roots development and the lower cell death, aerenchyma formation and lignification under osmotic stress. Effector CD4+ T cells can be classified by the cytokines they secrete, with T helper 1 (Th1) cells generating interferon (IFN)γ and Th17 cells secreting interleukin (IL)-17. Both Th1 and Th17 cells are strongly implicated in the initiation and chronicity of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) has been implicated as a potentially crucial site in regulating CD4+ T cell function. Secretory and transmembrane proteins are shuttled into the ER via the Sec61 translocon, where they undergo appropriate folding; misfolded proteins are retro-translocated from the ER in a p97-dependent manner. Here, we provide evidence that both processes are crucial to the secretion of inflammatory cytokines from effector CD4+ T cells. The pan-ER inhibitor eeeyarestatin-1 (ESI), which interferes with both Sec61 translocation and p97 retro-translocation, inhibited secretion of interferon (IFN)γ, interleukin (IL)-2 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α from Th1 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Selective inhibition of Sec61 by Apratoxin A (ApraA) revealed that ER translocation is crucial for Th1 cytokine secretion, while inhibition of p97 by NMS-873 also inhibited Th1 function, albeit to a lesser degree. By contrast, none of ESI, ApraA or NMS-873 could significantly reduce IL-17 secretion from Th17 cells. ApraA, but not NMS-873, reduced phosphorylation of Stat1 in Th1 cells, indicating the involvement of ER translocation in Th1 differentiation pathways. ApraA had modest effects on activation of the Th17 transcription factor Stat3, while NMS-873 had no effect. Interestingly, NMS-873 was able to reduce disease severity in CD4+ T cell-driven experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). Together, our data indicate that CD4+ T cell function, and Th1 cell function in particular, is dependent on protein translocation and dislocation across the ER. A multicenter, open-label, expanded-access study followed the safety of taliglucerase alfa, a plant cell-expressed recombinant enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), in adults with Gaucher disease previously treated with imiglucerase. Patients received taliglucerase alfa every 2 weeks for 9 months at a dose equivalent to their previous imiglucerase dose (Part A); patients were offered treatment for up to 33 months (Part B), and a later amendment allowed treatment-naïve patients.     Water deficit severely limits productivity of plants, and pose a major threat to modern agriculture system. Therefore, understanding drought adaptive mechanisms in drought-tolerant plants is imperative to formulate strategies for development of desiccation tolerance in crop plants. In present investigation, metabolic profiling employing GC-QTOF-MS/MS and HPLC-DAD was carried out to evaluate metabolic adjustments under drought stress in the xero-halophyte Salvadora persica. The metabolite profiling identified a total of 68 metabolites in S. persica leaf, including organic acids, amino acids, sugars, sugar alcohols, hormones, and polyphenols. The results showed that higher cellular osmolality under drought stress was accompanied by accumulations of several osmoprotectants like sugars and polyols (sucrose, glucose, mannose, galactose, erythrose, sorbose, glycerol, and myoinositol), organic acids (galactaric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid), and amino acids (alanine, phenylalanine, tyrosine).     Genomic information can be harnessed in order to identify new biomarkers that could improve the staging, choice of therapy and management of OSCC. The identification of new biomarkers is awaited for better personalization of the surgical treatment of OSCC.

The identification of new biomarkers is awaited for better personalization of the surgical treatment of OSCC.With the expansion of the global novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, unprecedented interventions have been widely implemented in many countries, including China. In view of this scenario, this research aims to explore the effectiveness of population mobility restriction in alleviating epidemic transmission during different stages of the outbreak. Taking Shenzhen, a city with a large immigrant population in China, as a case study, the real-time reproduction number of COVID-19 is estimated by statistical methods to represent the dynamic spatiotemporal transmission pattern of COVID-19. Furthermore, migration data between Shenzhen and other provinces are collected to investigate the impact of nationwide population flow on near-real-time dynamic reproductive numbers. The results show that traffic flow control between populated cities has an inhibitory effect on urban transmission, but this effect is not significant in the late stage of the epidemic spread in China. This finding implies that the government should limit international and domestic population movement starting from the very early stage of the outbreak. This work confirms the effectiveness of travel restriction measures in the face of COVID-19 in China and provides new insight for densely populated cities in imposing intervention measures at various stages of the transmission cycle.The goal of this paper is the characterisation of seven clays of the province of Alicante (SE Spain) and their possible use to improve the fertility, water absorption and contaminant-retaining capacity of degraded soils. Three soils affected by the dumping of construction debris were also studied to diagnose the problems and possible recovery strategies. Several physicochemical properties were measured, such as the water holding capacity, soil organic matter, lime, pH, EC and CEC. A high correlationship between mineralogical and elemental composition was obtained. Illite was present in all clays and soils. Some of the samples also contained kaolinite and significant amounts of lime. The CEC, as expected, was more closely related to the organic matter content. Soil organic matter was detected in the second derivative of the FTIR spectra by the signals of the CH2 groups at 2850 and 2919. This way, the FTIR spectrum for the soils of the area would make it possible to estimate both the organic matter content and the CEC. Despite their origin, soils did not show heavy metal pollution; however, salinisation risk seemed to be the most probable cause of degradation. According to the organic matter, lime and illite content, two clays were selected as the most suitable for soil degradation recovery. Furthermore, organic matter additions may help to improve the self-depurative ability of the soil.
    The robust and automatic segmentation of the pulmonary lobe is vital to surgical planning and regional image analysis of pulmonary related diseases in real-time Computer Aided Diagnosis systems. While a number of studies have examined this issue, the segmentation of unclear borders of the five lobes of the lung remains challenging because of incomplete fissures, the diversity of anatomical pulmonary information, and obstructive lesions caused by pulmonary diseases. This study proposes a model called Regularized Pulmonary Lobe Segmentation Network to accurately predict the lobes as well as the borders.

    First, a 3D fully convolutional network is constructed to extract contextual features from computed tomography images. Second, multi-task learning is employed to learn the segmentations of the lobes and the borders between them to train the neural network to better predict the borders via shared representation. Third, a 3D depth-wise separable de-convolution block is proposed for deep supervision to efficienshow the effectiveness of the proposed approach in segmenting the tissues as well as the borders of the lobes.Visual information is a critical component in the evaluation and communication of patient medical information. As display technologies have evolved, the medical community has sought to take advantage of advances in wider color gamuts, greater display portability, and more immersive imagery. These image quality enhancements have shown improvements in the quality of healthcare through greater efficiency, higher diagnostic accuracy, added functionality, enhanced training, and better health records. However, the display technology advances typically introduce greater complexity in the image workflow and display evaluation. This paper highlights some of the optical measurement challenges created by these new display technologies and offers possible pathways to address them.
