  • This study was performed to investigate the Eustachian tube as a potential route for contralateral spreading following intratympanic nanoparticle (NP)-conjugated gentamicin injection in a rat model. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups and substances were injected in the right ear group 1 (fluorescent magnetic nanoparticles [F-MNPs], n = 4), group 2 (F-MNP-conjugated gentamicin [F-MNP@GM], n = 2), and control group (no injections, n = 2). T2-weighted sequences corresponding to the regions of interest at 1, 2, and 3 h after intratympanic injection were evaluated, along with immunostaining fluorescence of both side cochlea. The heterogeneous signal intensity of F-MNPs and F-MNP@GM on T2-weighted images, observed in the ipsilateral tympanum, was also detected in the contralateral tympanum in 4 out of 6 rats, recapitulating fluorescent nanoparticles in the contralateral cochlear hair cells. Computational simulations demonstrate the contralateral spreading of particles by gravity force following intratympanic injection in a rat model. The diffusion rate of the contralateral spreading relies on the sizes and surface charges of particles. Collectively, the Eustachian tube could be a route for contralateral spreading following intratympanic injection. The habitat use of 344 wild migratory waterfowl over four migration cycles was estimated based on tracking records. The association of habitat use with HPAI H5N8 outbreaks in poultry farms was evaluated using a multilevel logistic regression model. We found that a poultry farm within a wild waterfowl habitat had a 3-8 times higher risk of HPAI outbreak than poultry farms located outside of the habitat. The range of wild waterfowl habitats increased during autumn migration, and was associated with the epidemic peak of HPAI outbreaks on domestic poultry farms in the ROK. Our findings provide a better understanding of the dynamics of HPAI infection in the wildlife-domestic poultry interface and may help to establish early detection, and cost-effective preventive measures.Arctic top predators are expected to be impacted by increasing temperatures associated with climate change, but the relationship between increasing sea temperatures and population dynamics of Arctic cetaceans remains largely unexplored. Narwhals (Monodon monoceros) are considered to be among the most sensitive of Arctic endemic marine mammals to climate change due to their limited prey selection, strict migratory patterns and high site fidelity. In the context of climate change, we assume that the population dynamics of narwhals are partly influenced by changes in environmental conditions, with warm areas of increasing sea temperatures having lower abundance of narwhals. Using a unique large dataset of 144 satellite tracked narwhals, sea surface temperature (SST) data spanning 25 years (1993-2018) and narwhal abundance estimates from 17 localities, we (1) assessed the thermal exposure of this species, (2) investigated the SST trends at the summer foraging grounds, and (3) assessed the relationship between SST and abundance of narwhals. We showed a sharp SST increase in Northwest, Mideast and Southeast Greenland, whereas no change could be detected in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA) and in the Greenland Sea. The rising sea temperatures were correlated with the smallest narwhal abundance observed in the Mideast and Southeast Greenland ( 40,000 individuals). These results support the hypothesis that warming ocean waters will restrict the habitat range of the narwhal, further suggesting that narwhals from Mideast and Southeast Greenland may be under pressure to abandon their traditional habitats due to ocean warming, and consequently either migrate further North or locally go extinct.An amendment to this paper has been published and can be accessed via a link at the top of the paper.Traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes brain edema that induces increased intracranial pressure and decreased cerebral perfusion. In this work, we present a finite element model of post-traumatic brain injury and decompressive craniectomy that incorporates a biphasic, nonlinear biomechanical model of the brain. A homogenous pressure is applied in the brain to represent the intracranial pressure loading caused by the tissue swelling and the models calculate the deformations and stresses in the brain as well as the herniated volume of the brain tissue that exits the skull following craniectomy. Simulations for different craniectomy geometries (unilateral, bifrontal and bifrontal with midline bar) and sizes are employed to identify optimal clinical conditions of decompressive craniectomy. The reported results for the herniated volume of the brain tissue as a function of the intracranial pressure loading under a specific geometry and size of craniectomy are exceptionally relevant for decompressive craniectomy planning.
    Oxygen and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) are primary modes of respiratory support for preterm infants. Animal models, however, have demonstrated adverse unintended effects of hyperoxia and CPAP on lung development. We investigate the effects of combined neonatal hyperoxia and CPAP exposure on airway function and morphology in ****.

    Newborn **** were exposed to hyperoxia (40% O
    ) 24 h/day for 7 consecutive days with or without daily (3 h/day) concomitant CPAP. Two weeks after CPAP and/or hyperoxia treatment ended, lungs were assessed for airway (AW) hyperreactivity and morphology.

    CPAP and hyperoxia exposure alone increased airway reactivity compared to untreated control ****. CPAP-induced airway hyperreactivity was associated with epithelial and smooth muscle proliferation. In contrast, combined CPAP and hyperoxia treatment no longer resulted in increased airway reactivity, which was associated with normalization of smooth muscle and epithelial proliferation to values similar to untreated ****.

  • Mechanistically, UBR5 regulates FBP1 expression by modulating C/EBPα, directly binding to C/EBPα, and promoting its ubiquitination and degradation. Together, these results identify a mechanism used by pancreatic cancer cells to survive the nutrient-poor tumour microenvironment and also provide insight regarding the role of UBR5 in pancreatic cancer cell adaptation to metabolic stresses.Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play an essential role in tumorigenesis and development. However, they have rarely been investigated in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). This study aimed to investigate the role of circRNA in the invasion and metastasis of NPC. We screened and verified the high expression of circSETD3 in NPC cell lines using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and verified the results of NPC biopsy samples using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and in situ hybridization (ISH). In vivo and in vitro experiments indicated that circSETD3 could promote NPC cell invasion and migration. We compared the proteomic data of NPC cells before and after the overexpression or knockdown of circSETD3 in combination with bioinformatics prediction and experimental verification. It was found that circSETD3 competitively adsorbs to miR-615-5p and miR-1538 and negates their inhibitory effect on MAPRE1 mRNA, thereby upregulating the expression of MAPRE1. The upregulated MAPRE1 then inhibits the acetylation of α-tubulin, promotes the dynamic assembly of microtubules, and enhances the invasion and migration capabilities of NPC cells. The results of this study suggest that circSETD3 is a novel molecular marker and a potential target for NPC diagnosis and treatment.Overexpression of D-type cyclins in human cancer frequently occurs as a result of protein stabilization, emphasizing the importance of identification of the machinery that regulates their ubiqutin-dependent degradation. Cyclin D3 is overexpressed in ~50% of Burkitt's lymphoma correlating with a mutation of Thr-283. However, the E3 ligase that regulates phosphorylated cyclin D3 and whether a stabilized, phosphorylation deficient mutant of cyclin D3, has oncogenic activity are undefined. We describe the identification of SCF-Fbxl8 as the E3 ligase for Thr-283 phosphorylated cyclin D3. SCF-Fbxl8 poly-ubiquitylates p-Thr-283 cyclin D3 targeting it to the proteasome. Functional investigation demonstrates that Fbxl8 antagonizes cell cycle progression, hematopoietic cell proliferation, and oncogene-induced transformation through degradation of cyclin D3, which is abolished by expression of cyclin D3T283A, a non-phosphorylatable mutant. Clinically, the expression of cyclin D3 is inversely correlated with the expression of Fbxl8 in lymphomas from human patients implicating Fbxl8 functions as a tumor suppressor.Group I metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu1 and mGlu5) are promising targets for multiple psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, starting from the deposited mGlu1 and mGlu5 crystal structures, we utilized computational modeling approaches integrating docking, molecular dynamics simulation, and efficient post-trajectory analysis to reveal the subtype-selective mechanism of mGlu1 and mGlu5 to 10 diverse drug scaffolds representing known negative allosteric modulators (NAMs) in the literature. The results of modeling identified six pairs of non-conserved residues and four pairs of conserved ones as critical features to distinguish the selective NAMs binding to the corresponding receptors. In addition, nine pairs of residues are beneficial to the development of novel dual-target NAMs of group I metabotropic glutamate receptors. Furthermore, the binding modes of a reported dual-target NAM (VU0467558) in mGlu1 and mGlu5 were predicted to verify the identified residues that play key roles in the receptor selectivity and the dual-target binding. Western blot analysis was used to assess the expression of p-STAT3, STAT3, SHP-1, and RNF6. Troxerutin reduced blood pressure and the expression of VCE, angiotensin, urinary protein and pro-inflammatory cytokines in a dose-dependent manner while increasing the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The levels of ROS were decreased, and the levels of antioxidant enzymes were increased. Troxerutin treatment significantly suppressed STAT3/RNF6 signaling. Overexpression of RNF6 attenuated the effects of troxerutin in ameliorating inflammation and oxidative stress.     Bunge (Asparagaceae), a commonly used Chinese traditional paediatric medicine.

    This study investigates the effects of anemarsaponin BII on the activity of CYP450s to provide more guidance for the clinical use of anemarsaponin BII.

    Using various diagnostic substrates, the effects of a fixed concentration of anemarsaponin BII (100 μM) on the activity of eight main isoforms of CYP450s (CYP1A2, 2A6, 3A4, 2C8, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6 and 2E1) was first studied with pooled human liver microsomes (HLMs). Then, dose-dependent (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 μM anemarsaponin BII) and time-dependent (0, 5, 10, 15 and 30 min) experiments were performed to obtain corresponding kinetic parameters.

    Anemarsaponin BII showed significant inhibitory effects on the activity of CYP3A4, 2D6 and 2E1 with the IC
    values of 13.67, 16.26 and 19.72 μM. Anemarsaponin BII acted as a non-competitive inhibitor of CYP3A4 with the

    The aim of this study was to compute the sensitivity, specificity and inter-reader variability of ultra-widefield retinal imaging (Optomap 200Tx) for screening retinal lesions before myopic refractive surgery.

    Two hundred and eight eyes of 109 consecutive refractive surgery candidates were included in this study. All subjects underwent Optomap 200Tx, mydriatic slit-lamp lens examination and dilated retinal examination with scleral indentation by a retinal specialist. Retinal findings by indirect dilated examination by retinal specialist was considered as the gold-standard. Sensitivity analyses for the readers were calculated between the Optomap images and the gold-standard retinal examination.

    Seventy-three of the 208 eyes (35.1%) had peripheral retinal lesions diagnosed by the retinal specialist on dilated fundus examination. Peripheral lesions were seen on the Optomap images in 111 (53.4%) eyes. Compared to the dilated retinal examination, the detection rate with the Optomap 200Tx was 78.1% and specificity rate was 60%. The accuracy rate between the 3 readers ranged from 72% to 87%. The highest accuracy was noted with the reader post 1 year of retinal training (86.54%).

    The Optomap 200Tx showed a high sensitivity and moderate specificity for identifying peripheral retinal lesions in eyes undergoing refractive surgery. The Optomap examination is a convenient, fast and feasible method for detecting the pathological fundus changes in myopic eyes. The reliability of the examination improves when the images are interpreted by a reader with prior retinal training.

    A retrospective study where healthy Indian individuals aged between 5 and 70 years having undergone corneal biomechanics assessment using Corvis ST between January 2017 and December 2018 and having best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 were enrolled. Subjects with central corneal thickness <500 microns, intra-ocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 22 mmHg, refractive error ≥ 6.00D, history of any systemic and ocular disease, previous ocular surgery, poor scans quality, and subjects with any missing data were also excluded. Corneal biomechanical parameters were noted and compared across different age groups.

    Total of 3125 eyes had undergone the Corvis ST analysis. After applying exclusion criteria, 718 right eyes of 718 patients were included for the analysis and were further divided into different age groups as per each decade (sample size), such as 5-10 (37), 11-20 (113), 21-30 (396), 31-40 (116), 41-50 (39), 50 and above (17). All the subjects were matched for IOP and central corneal thickness (p > 0.05). A total of 19 out of 26 corneal biomechanical parameters were significantly different across age groups (p < 0.05). Vinciguerra screening parameters, such as deformation amplitude ratio max, biomechanically corrected IOP, and stiffness parameter A1 were significantly different across different age groups (p < 0.05).

    Corneal biomechanical parameters are affected by age as cornea becomes progressively stiffer. The information reported here would serve as a reference for future corneal biomechanical researches and would help in differentiating the abnormal eyes from normal healthy eyes.

Due to the side effects caused by the chemical type of GABA, the biological production of GABA has attracted. Three levels of whey powder (5%, 10%, and 15%), and monosodium glutamate (MSG) (1%, 3%, and 5%) were selected at temperatures (25, 30, and 37°C) and after fermentation, the presence of GABA in the culture medium was examined by thin-layer chromatography. The optimal amount of GABA was measured by using high-performance liquid chromatography. The results of the central composite design of the response surface methodology at a significant level of 95% showed that the optimal treatment was 14.96% whey powder, 4.95% MSG at temperature of 37°C and fermentation for 48 hr and under these conditions, GABA production was 553.5 ppm.     Urban areas in central Asia are currently undergoing nutrition transition. Street food is very popular, but the specific foods available and their nutritional composition are unknown. The aim was to describe the availability and macronutrient composition of street foods in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Moisture content was an important indicator for the count of fungi and ochratoxin A. Ochratoxin analysis of plate cultures was performed by a HPLC technique. Sample of mixed poultry feedstuff which was collected from Jeddah displayed the highest level of ochratoxin (14.8 µg/kg) and moisture content (11.5%). Corn grains samples were highly contaminated by ochratoxin A (450 and 423 µg/kg) and recorded the highest moisture contents (14.1 and 14.5%). Ochratoxin A production in fungal species isolated from mixed poultry feedstuff samples were high with P. verrucosum (5.5 μg/kg) and A. niger (1.1 μg/kg). In sorghum and corn grains, the highest ochratoxins producing species were P. viridicatum (5.9 μg/kg) and A. niger (1.3 μg/kg), respectively. Sixty-three isolates of A. niger were ochratoxigenic, and all of them showed the presence of pks genes using PKS15C-MeT and PKS15KS primer pairs. The detection technique of A. niger in poultry feedstuff samples described in the present study was successfully used as a rapid and specific protocol for early detection of A. niger without cultivation on specific media.

Due to the side effects caused by the chemical type of GABA, the biological production of GABA has attracted. Three levels of whey powder (5%, 10%, and 15%), and monosodium glutamate (MSG) (1%, 3%, and 5%) were selected at temperatures (25, 30, and 37°C) and after fermentation, the presence of GABA in the culture medium was examined by thin-layer chromatography. The optimal amount of GABA was measured by using high-performance liquid chromatography. The results of the central composite design of the response surface methodology at a significant level of 95% showed that the optimal treatment was 14.96% whey powder, 4.95% MSG at temperature of 37°C and fermentation for 48 hr and under these conditions, GABA production was 553.5 ppm. The results of the fermented extract tests showed that the highest antimicrobial activity was on Escherichia coli and the highest free radical scavenging was 59.67%. CASE SUMMARY A 2-year-old intact male domestic shorthaired cat presented to an emergency and referral center for lethargy, vomiting, and hematuria. Severe azotemia and hyperkalemia were observed on a serum biochemistry panel. The patient was diagnosed with urethral obstruction and was treated with urethral catheterization, calcium gluconate, IV fluid therapy, buprenorphine, and prazosin. The patient's azotemia improved, and the hyperkalemia resolved. Urinary catheterization was discontinued. The patient developed pyrexia, worsening azotemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and dysuria. Urethral catheterization was repeated. Abdominal radiographs showed left renomegaly, and abdominal ultrasound revealed left perinephric fluid. Ultrasound-guided centesis of the perinephric fluid revealed septic inflammation, and the sample was consistent with urine based upon sample creatinine. Fluid from the perinephric abscess and urine from the bladder both grew Pasturella spp. The patient was treated with perinephric catheterization, saline lavage, and a continuous infusion of cefotaxime for 72 h. The patient's azotemia quickly resolved, and the patient was discharged after 6 days of hospitalization. The patient was reported to have made a full recovery. NEW OR UNIQUE INFORMATION PROVIDED This is the first described case of perinephric abscess and urosepsis following urethral obstruction in a cat and its successful medical management. Perinephric abscess not associated with intrarenal abscess has not previously been identified. The specificities and tumor targeting efficiencies of modified or unmodified G207 particles were analyzed by a real-time polymerase chain reaction at the level of cell attachment and entry. Immune responses were assessed by an interleukin-6 release assay from RAW264.7 macrophages. Biodistribution and in vivo antitumoral activity after intravenous delivery was evaluated in BALB/c nude **** bearing subcutaneous KB xenograft tumors. RESULTS FA-PEG-HSV exhibited enhanced targeting specificity for folate receptor over-expressing tumor cells and had lower immunogenicity than the unmodified HSV. Topological data analysis using human epithelial transcriptomic data from the U-BIOPRED cohort identified severe asthma groups with features consistent with the presence of IL-13 and EGFR/ERBB activation, with involvement of distinct EGFR ligands. Our data suggest that IL-13 may play a dual role in severe asthma on the one hand driving pathologic corticosteroid-refractory mixed granulocytic inflammation, but on the other hand underpinning beneficial epithelial repair responses, which may confound responses in clinical trials.   • To probe into the possible connection between gastroesophageal reflux disorders (GERDs) and functionally occurring dyspepsia as a factor raising the risk of chronic periodontitis.

    A cross-sectional study was carried out on 40 patients with chronic periodontitis with age group between 40-60 years. The test group included 20 people diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), according to the Montreal Definition and Classification agreement, and chronic periodontitis. Symptomatic diagnoses were done to confirm functional dyspepsia. The control group comprised 20 systematically healthy people suffering from chronic periodontitis. Indices measured included flow-rate of saliva, repetitive saliva swallowing test for swallowing function, papillary marginal attachment index of gingiva, oral hygiene index-simplified and decayed, missing, filled teeth index. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22 (IBM Inc. Chicago, USA). Descriptive statistics, such as mean and standard deviation (SD) for continuous varicidences of chronic periodontitis and was established as an independent risk-raising factor.
    Isfahan Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance System-1 has been instituted in Isfahan, Iran to construct a project for surveillance of clinically significant bacteria, and to help raise a logic regional stewardship program for prevention and control of disseminating-resistant organisms.

    During March 2016 to March 2018, an antibiotic resistance surveillance system was designed and implemented by Isfahan Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Research Center. The surveillance program was implemented in three general hospitals in Isfahan. In addition to the routine microbiology data, clinical data (differentiation between true infections and contamination, healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) and community-acquired infections (CAI), as well as determination of the infection site) were obtained and analyzed by WHONET software.

    During a 2-year period, from 7056 samples that revealed growth of bacteria, 3632 (51.5%) isolates were detected as contamination and 3424 (48.5%) true bacterial isolates were identified. Of these, about 32% of isolates were recognized as HCAI. Totally, the most recognized infections were urinary tract infection, bloodstream infection and skin and soft tissue infections. In patients with HCAIs, 70% of isolates were gram negative and in patients with CAIs 73% isolates were gram negative bacteria.

All these metabolic processes are mediated via two adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2. In addition, adiponectin is one of the hormones with the highest plasma concentrations. Weight loss or caloric restriction leads to increasing adiponectin levels, and this increase is associated with increased insulin sensitivity. Therefore, the adiponectin pathway can play a crucial role in the development of drugs to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus and other obesity-related diseases affected by insulin resistance like cancers or cardiovascular diseases. Adiponectin appears to increase insulin sensitivity by improving glucose and lipid metabolisms. Researchers are still in the process to identify any single biomarker with good sensitivity and specificity. Various traditional and serum approaches to identify ovarian cancer have been successful in the early stages. The invention of molecular biomarkers such as the use of genomic profiling, DNA methylation, and other approaches have proven to be of higher sensitivity and specificity, which overall affects the prognosis of ovarian cancer.     To probe into the possible connection between gastroesophageal reflux disorders (GERDs) and functionally occurring dyspepsia as a factor raising the risk of chronic periodontitis. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 40 patients with chronic periodontitis with age group between 40-60 years. The test group included 20 people diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), according to the Montreal Definition and Classification agreement, and chronic periodontitis. Symptomatic diagnoses were done to confirm functional dyspepsia. The control group comprised 20 systematically healthy people suffering from chronic periodontitis. Isfahan Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance System-1 has been instituted in Isfahan, Iran to construct a project for surveillance of clinically significant bacteria, and to help raise a logic regional stewardship program for prevention and control of disseminating-resistant organisms. During March 2016 to March 2018, an antibiotic resistance surveillance system was designed and implemented by Isfahan Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Research Center. The surveillance program was implemented in three general hospitals in Isfahan. In addition to the routine microbiology data, clinical data (differentiation between true infections and contamination, healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) and community-acquired infections (CAI), as well as determination of the infection site) were obtained and analyzed by WHONET software. During a 2-year period, from 7056 samples that revealed growth of bacteria, 3632 (51.5%) isolates were detected as contamination and 3424 (48.5%) true bacterial isolates were identified. Of these, about 32% of isolates were recognized as HCAI. Totally, the most recognized infections were urinary tract infection, bloodstream infection and skin and soft tissue infections. In patients with HCAIs, 70% of isolates were gram negative and in patients with CAIs 73% isolates were gram negative bacteria.   • The purpose of this study was to investigate the tissue regenerating and biomechanical properties of processed eggshell membrane powder (PEP) for use in 3D-scaffolds. PEP is a low-cost, natural biomaterial with beneficial bioactive properties. Most importantly, this material is available as a by-product of the chicken egg processing (breaking) industry on a large scale, and it could have potential as a low-cost ingredient for therapeutic scaffolds. Scaffolds consisting of collagen alone and collagen combined with PEP were produced and analyzed for their mechanical properties and the growth of primary fibroblasts and skeletal muscle cells. Mechanical testing revealed that a PEP/collagen-based scaffold increased the mechanical hardness of the scaffold compared with a pure collagen scaffold. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated an interconnected porous structure for both scaffolds, and that the PEP was evenly distributed in dense clusters within the scaffold. Fibroblast and skeletal muscle cells attached, were viable and able to proliferate for 1 and 2 weeks in both scaffolds. The cell types retained their phenotypic properties expressing phenotype markers of fibroblasts (TE7, alpha-smooth muscle actin) and skeletal muscle (CD56) visualized by immunostaining. mRNA expression of the skeletal muscle markers myoD, myogenin, and fibroblasts marker (SMA) together with extracellular matrix components supported viable phenotypes and matrix-producing cells in both types of scaffolds. In conclusion, PEP is a promising low-cost, natural biomaterial for use in combination with collagen as a scaffold for 3D-tissue engineering to improve the mechanical properties and promote cellular adhesion and growth of regenerating cells.Microbial communities play a key role for central biogeochemical cycles in the subsurface. Here, we applied metaproteomics at different subsurface sites in winter, summer and autumn from surface litter layer, seepage water at increasing subsoil depths and remote located groundwater from two wells within the Hainich Critical Zone Exploratory, Germany. We observed changes in the dominance of microbial families at subsurface sampling sites with increasing distances, i.e., Microcoleaceae dominated in topsoil seepage, while Candidatus Brocadiaceae dominated at deeper and more distant groundwater wells. Nitrifying bacteria showed a shift in dominance from drought to rewetting events from summer by Nitrosomandaceae to autumn by Candidatus Brocadiaceae. We further observed that the reductive pentose phosphate pathway was a prominent CO2-fixation strategy, dominated by Woeseiaceae in wet early winter, which decreased under drought conditions and changed to a dominance of Sphingobacteriaceae under rewetting conditions. This study shows that increasing subsurface sites and rewetting event after drought alter the dominances of key subsurface microbes. The monthly EPB occurrence rate, depth, duration, and ROTI show strong seasonal variations, with maxima during equinoctial seasons, especially during the moderate-to-high solar activity years of 2013-2016. Furthermore, two seasonal asymmetries can be clearly seen for these parameters from 2013 to 2016. The EPB occurrences rate, depth, and duration vary annually with the solar radio flux at 10.7 cm (F10.7) index. A large-scale system was constructed, and the macrophytes Azolla caroliniana, Egeria densa, Myriophyllum aquaticum, and Eichhornia crassipes were selected for phytoremediation. As cyanobacterial blooms persisted in the eutrophic wastewater, two microcystin congeners (**-LR and -RR) were used as indicator contaminants for system efficiency and monitored by liquid-chromatography-tandem-mass-spectrometry.     There is now substantial evidence to support venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation efficacy and safety for patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, recent guidelines recommend against the initiation of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in patients with mechanical ventilation for coronavirus disease 2019 severe acute respiratory distress syndrome for greater than 7-10 days.

    We report the case of a patient with coronavirus disease 2019 severe acute respiratory distress syndrome with successful late venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation initiation after 20 days of mechanical ventilation. Respiratory compliance, arterial blood gases, and radiological lesions improved progressively under venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ultraprotective ventilation. The patient was discharged from ICU.

    We aimed to determine if elevations in serum neuron-specific enolase are associated with brain injury and outcomes in adults who require venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

    Serum sampled 1, 3, and 7 days after venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation was stored at -80°C and neuron-specific enolase concentrations were measured in batches at the end of the study. The association between neuron-specific enolase concentrations and outcomes (28-d mortality and poor outcome, defined by a score of 4-6 on the modified Rankin scale at 90 d) were explored by multivariable logistic regression, with neuron-specific enolase concentrations dichotomized according to median values. One-hundred three patients were included, of whom compared with those without stroke.

We aimed to determine if elevations in serum neuron-specific enolase are associated with brain injury and outcomes in adults who require venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Prospective observational study. Two ICUs of a university hospital, Paris, France. Consecutive adult patients treated with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory cardiogenic shock or in-hospital refractory cardiac arrest. None. Serum sampled 1, 3, and 7 days after venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation cannulation was stored at -80°C and neuron-specific enolase concentrations were measured in batches at the end of the study. The association between neuron-specific enolase concentrations and outcomes (28-d mortality and poor outcome, defined by a score of 4-6 on the modified Rankin scale at 90 d) were explored by multivariable logistic regression, with neuron-specific enolase concentrations dichotomized according to median values. One-hundred three patients were included, of whom compared with those without stroke. In adult patients under venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, day-3 serum neuron-specific enolase concentrations are independently associated with short-term mortality and poor functional outcomes. These findings deserve validation in a multicenter setting. Fellows-as-teachers curricula may support these roles, but little is known about their effectiveness and durability. We sought to measure the long-term effects on ICU rounds after administering fellows-as-teachers workshops. Prospective pre-/postintervention observational study of ICU rounds. Tertiary-care medical ICU with both pulmonary critical care and critical care medicine fellowships. ICU teaching teams. Fellows attended immersive workshops on promoting clinical reasoning, managing the learning environment, teaching bedside skills, and developing situational awareness on ICU rounds. After the workshops, faculty physicians were encouraged to have fellows routinely lead afternoon rounds. We gathered data from direct observations of ICU rounding activities, residents' evaluations of rounds from surveys, and faculty physicians' written comments on fellows' performance in the ICU from end-of-rotation evaluations. To assess the impact of the use of aerosol barrier device, Splashguard-CG, on the endotracheal intubation with different types of laryngoscope.
