The test reactions for photocatalytic water splitting resulted in improved H2 evolution rates of 6.1-72.6 μmol/h under UV-visible-light irradiation, and stable solar H2 evolution of up to 5 days was demonstrated.Manganese is a redox-sensitive element in soils and sediments that plays an important role in the retention of trace elements. Under anoxic conditions, clay minerals were shown to increase Cd retention by favoring the precipitation of Mn(II) phases. In this study, we investigated the influence of aeration on anoxically formed Mn solid phases and its impact on Cd retention in the presence of two clay minerals with low Fe contents, a natural kaolinite (KGa-1b) and a synthetic montmorillonite (Syn-1). Ca-saturated KGa-1b and Syn-1 were pre-equilibrated with Mn2+ and Cd2+ under anoxic conditions for 1 or 30 days and subsequently exposed to air for 1 or 30 days. The analysis with synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) revealed that extended anoxic pre-equilibration (30 days) partially prevented the oxidation of sorbed Mn(II) (MnSiO3 and Mn(II)Al-LDH). Extended exposure to ambient air and short anoxic pre-equilibration favored the formation of feitknechtite (β-MnOOH) and birnessite (δ-MnO2). Aeration resulted in a decrease of pH and a net release of Cd2+ into the solution, indicating that Cd re-sorption by Mn(III/IV)-phases was insufficient to compensate for the release of Cd2+ due to dissolution of Mn(II)-containing phases and the decrease in pH. The maximum adsorption capacity for CLE and RAC are up to 294.1 and 366.3 mg/g under the optimum adsorption conditions, respectively. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism effects of pH, temperature, and coexisted ions are investigated systematically. It is found that the MOF pore size and weak hydrogen-bond interactions between CLE/RAC molecules and the MOF are the main causes leading to the extraordinary adsorption. This study provides a new idea for the purposeful design and synthesis of MOFs for removing environmental pollutants and sheds light on the depuration of contaminated water.Materials that dynamically respond to their environment have diverse applications in artificial muscles, soft robotics, and smart textiles. Herein, we propose a silicon composite anode (denoted as T-Si@C), which integrates free space and mixed carbon shells doped with rigid TiO2/Ti5Si3 nanoparticles. In this configuration, the free space accommodates the silicon volume fluctuation during battery operation. The carbon shells with embedded TiO2/Ti5Si3 nanoparticles maintain the structural stability of the anode while accelerating the lithium-ion diffusion kinetics and mitigating interfacial side reactions. Based on these advantages, T-Si@C anodes demonstrate an outstanding lithium storage performance with impressive long-term cycling reversibility and good rate capability. Additionally, T-Si@C//LiFePO4 full cells show superior electrochemical reversibility. The reaction of L with 2 equiv of silver(I) gave a 36 cyclic trimer, [Ag6(L)3(CH3CN)3](OTf)6·3CH3CN. Furthermore, reversible complexation between the 22 cyclic dimer and 36 cyclic trimer was confirmed by 1H NMR and the CSI mass in the addition of silver(I) or the [2.2.2]cryptand.High-resolution electrospray ionization ion mobility mass spectrometry has revealed a gas-phase isomer of the ubiquitous, extremely well-studied Au25(SR)18 cluster both in anionic and cationic form. The results imply that the structural dynamics leading to isomerization of thiolate-protected gold clusters may play an important role in their gas-phase reactions and that isomerization could be controlled by external stimuli.

Thus, the low-cost and thermochromic superhydrophobic clay mineral/BiVO4-HP coatings presented a promising application in temperature sensors and switches with the excellent weather resistance to record and monitor the temperature changes.The magnetoelectric effect is a fundamental physical phenomenon that synergizes electric and magnetic degrees of freedom to generate distinct material responses like electrically tuned magnetism, which serves as a key foundation of the emerging field of spintronics. Here, we show by first-principles studies that ferroelectric (FE) polarization of an In2Se3 monolayer can modulate the magnetism of an adjacent transition-metal (TM)-decorated graphene layer via a ferroelectrically induced electronic transition. The TM nonbonding d-orbital shifts downward and hybridizes with carbon-p states near the Fermi level, suppressing the magnetic moment, under one FE polarization, but on reversed FE polarization this TM d-orbital moves upward, restoring the original magnetic moment. This finding of robust magnetoelectric effect in the TM-decorated graphene/In2Se3 heterostructure offers powerful insights and a promising avenue for experimental exploration of ferroelectrically controlled magnetism in two-dimensional (2D) materials.Herein, we introduce polymer nanofibers of TiO2@NiCo-LDH as interlayers into Li-S batteries. The mechanism of formation of this novel hierarchical structure was investigated. The multilayered hierarchical structure and abundant lithiophilic nucleation sites of the substrate provide a stable environment for the deposition and stripping of lithium metal, thus preventing the generation of lithium dendrites. Consequently, the lithium anode based on the NHCF/CN/ZnO current collector demonstrated an excellent Coulombic efficiency of 96.47% after 400 cycles at 0.5 mA cm-2. The prepared NHCF/CN/ZnO/Li electrode also showed outstanding cycling performance of over 800 h and an ultralow voltage hysteresis of less than 30 mV in a symmetric cell at 5 mA cm-2 and 5 mAh cm-2. Even at a high loading of the cathode with 10.4 mg cm-2, the full cell of NHCF/CN/ZnO/Li anode with LiFePO4 can also work very well. Our work offers a path toward the facial preparation of 3D hierarchical structure for high-performance lithium metal batteries.The physical and chemical properties of MXenes are strongly dependent on surface terminations; thus, the tailoring of surface functional groups in two-dimensional transition-metal carbides (MXenes) may extend the applicability of these compelling materials to a wider set of fields. The degree of modification of MXene is expediently tunable by adjusting the concentration of the diazonium salt solution. The work function of functionalized MXene is modifiable by regulating the quantity of grafted diazonium surface groups, with an adjustable range of around 0.

We discuss the case of a 22-year-old woman with a long-standing history of oral ulcers and vulvovaginal burning who presented with acute painless uveitis. With this presentation, there was an initial concern for infectious retinitis for which she was started on systemic antiviral therapy. Subsequent infectious disease workup was ultimately negative. Given her medical history and current presentation, she was diagnosed and treated for an acute inflammatory episode of ocular Behcet's disease. The patient's vision returned to baseline prior to discharge after treatment with systemic glucocorticoids. The diagnosis of Behcet's disease in the setting of painless vision loss can oftentimes be elusive. This meta-analysis was conducted in order to understand the clinical efficacy of stent insertion with high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation for the treatment of malignant biliary obstruction (MBO).
The Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for all relevant studies published through July 2020. The meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan v5.3, with analyzed study endpoints including the rate of stent dysfunction, time to stent dysfunction, stent patency, complication rate, and overall survival (OS).
In total, 35 potentially relevant studies were initially identified, of which 6 were ultimately included in the present meta-analysis. These 6 studies included 429 MBO patients that were treated either only via stenting (n = 221) or via stenting in combination with HIFU ablation (n = 208). Pooled stent dysfunction rates in the stent and stent with HIFU groups were 25.9% and 18.0%, respectively (OR 1.59; 95% CI 0.88, 2.84, P = .12). The average time to stent dysfunction was significantly longer in the stent with HIFU group relative to the stent group (MD -3.15; 95% CI -3.53, -2.77, P < .0001). Pooled complication rates in the stent and stent with HIFU groups were 17.1% and 19.6%, respectively (OR 0.88; 95% CI 0.49, 1.58, P = .67). Stent patency and OS were both significantly longer in the stent with HIFU group relative to the stent group (P < .0001 and.0001, respectively). Funnel plot analyses did not reveal any significant evidence of publication bias linked to the selected study endpoints.

The objective of this systematic evaluation and meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Tuina for diabetes with obesity.

Depression is common in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The association of depression and diabetes has negative effects on patients. This study investigated the prevalence of depression in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and examined the social, psychological and clinical factors associated with depression.
The study included 216 inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Department of Endocrinology and Neurology, Hue Central Hospital and the Department of General Internal Medicine, Hue University Hospital. This descriptive cross-sectional study evaluated depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data were collected on patients' socio-demographic factors such as sex, age, marital and economic status, level of education and clinical factors including duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, comorbidities or complications as well as health behavior including alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activities. Logistic regression was used tthis patient population and screening individuals for relevant risk factors is highly recommended.
Ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes (KPT2D) is increasingly recognized in young adults. However, the role of blood lipids in KPT2D, especially serum triglycerides (TGs), is not yet clearly understood.
We retrospectively evaluated 409 young patients diagnosed with KPT2D or classical type 2 diabetes (T2D) attending an academic tertiary hospital. Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings were compared between KPT2D and T2D patients. ANOVA or a non-parametric test analyses were used to evaluate differences in clinical characteristics and laboratory findings. Multivariate regression analyses and stratified analyses were used to further investigate differences in serum TGs levels between KPT2D and T2D individuals.
KPT2D is a subtype of T2D with traits of overweight or obesity. However, hyperglycemia and impaired β-cell functions were more severe in KPT2D patients. Serum TGs levels were significantly higher (
= 0.0003) in KPT2D individuals. Furthermore, the proportion of very high serum TGs levels was 6-fold higher (
< 0.0001) in KPT2D than in T2D patients. Elevated serum TGs were associated with young KPT2D patients.

Human adenovirus 36 (HAd36) infection has been associated with obesity. Experiments using 3T3-L1 adipocyte cultured cells and human adipose stem cells (hASCc) have shown that HAd36 stimulates the expression of genes implicated in cell differentiation and increased lipid accumulation. The presence of HAd36 in adipose tissue of overweight and obese women has also been confirmed. This study aims to analyze the presence of HAd36 DNA in the adipose tissue of women undergoing surgery for weight reduction and its relationship with obesity through changes in adipocyte morphology as well as the expression of C/EBPβ and HIF-1α.
Fifty-two subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were collected. The anthropometric parameters measured were weight, height, skin folds, body circumferences, and body fat percentage. Biochemical measures were performed for glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, cholesterol HDL-c, and LDL-c. The presence of HAd36 DNA was performed by conventional PCR. Catastrophic health expenditure is health spending that is not covered by a health-care plan. These costs tend to escalate over time, due to chronic illnesses. Catastrophic health expenditure leads to decreased use of health services and poorer treatment outcomes. This study measured the extent of and factors associated with catastrophic health expenditure among chronically ill patients attending Dessie Referral Hospital in northeast Ethiopia.
An institution-based cross-sectional study design was used to quantify catastrophic health expenditure among 302 chronically ill patients from May 25, 2018 to June 30, 2018. A stratified sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed using SPSS 20.
Catastrophic health expenditure was found in 194 (64.2%, 95% CI 58.8%-70.5%) of chronic patients. Costly service (151, 50%), transport (104, 34.4%), and pharmaceuticals (189, 62.6%) were the reasons for catastrophic health expenditure among chronic patients.
Depression is common in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The association of depression and diabetes has negative effects on patients. This study investigated the prevalence of depression in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus and examined the social, psychological and clinical factors associated with depression. The study included 216 inpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at the Department of Endocrinology and Neurology, Hue Central Hospital and the Department of General Internal Medicine, Hue University Hospital. This descriptive cross-sectional study evaluated depression using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Data were collected on patients' socio-demographic factors such as sex, age, marital and economic status, level of education and clinical factors including duration of type 2 diabetes mellitus, fasting blood glucose, HbA1C, comorbidities or complications as well as health behavior including alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activities. Ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes (KPT2D) is increasingly recognized in young adults. However, the role of blood lipids in KPT2D, especially serum triglycerides (TGs), is not yet clearly understood. We retrospectively evaluated 409 young patients diagnosed with KPT2D or classical type 2 diabetes (T2D) attending an academic tertiary hospital. Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings were compared between KPT2D and T2D patients. ANOVA or a non-parametric test analyses were used to evaluate differences in clinical characteristics and laboratory findings. Multivariate regression analyses and stratified analyses were used to further investigate differences in serum TGs levels between KPT2D and T2D individuals. KPT2D is a subtype of T2D with traits of overweight or obesity. However, hyperglycemia and impaired β-cell functions were more severe in KPT2D patients. Serum TGs levels were significantly higher ( = 0.0003) in KPT2D individuals. Furthermore, the proportion of very high serum TGs levels was 6-fold higher ( < 0.0001) in KPT2D than in T2D patients. Elevated serum TGs were associated with young KPT2D patients. Quantitative analysis of the kinetics of seeded aggregation, using a simple Michaelis-Menten-like model, in which the monomer first binds and then undergoes conformational conversion to β-strand, shows that the fibrils of tau-K18 K280Q convert monomeric protein more slowly than do fibrils of tau-K18. In contrast, monomeric tau-K18 K280Q is converted faster to fibrils than is monomeric tau-K18. Thus, the effect of Lys 280 acetylation on tau aggregate propagation in brain cells is expected to depend on the amount of acetylated tau present, and on whether the propagating seed is acetylated at Lys 280 or not.A 7-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair outdoor cat was referred for chronic left forelimb lameness, which had been treated with intra-articular injections of triamcinolone acetonide. Mycobacterium bovis was cultured from samples from the soft tissue and bone. The mycobacteria from the media were killed and the DNA extracted and tested on a multiplex real-time PCR for the absence of specific genes and the presence of mycobacterial genus markers. The PCR revealed bacillus Calmette-**érin Danish Strain 1331; this was also isolated from the prescapular lymph node, muscle and bone, obtained at post mortem examination. Badgers had been vaccinated with the bacillus Calmette-**érin vaccine SSI (Statens Serum Institute) in the area where the cat lived, in the spring and autumn of the previous year. In this context, we discuss the role of "stress memory" in imparting drought tolerance in plants. Future research efforts for its effective deployment for "drought hardening" in agricultural settings, along with a discussion on the yield tradeoff involved, is implicated.Health care organizations have had to respond to the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in unprecedented ways. In the United States, where health risk management is an established profession, health care risk managers (HRMs) contributed to the response by supporting organizations and frontline workers. HRMs advised administrative and clinical leadership on decisions and policies aimed at addressing the medico legal, ethical, and operational dilemmas raised by this public health emergency. This article describes these challenges from the perspective of a New York City (NYC) public hospital located in the "epicenter within the epicenter" of the pandemic and aims to provide practical guidance for HRMs on the front lines of this crisis.The interest in indole dearomatization, which serves as a useful tool in the total synthesis of related alkaloid natural products, has recently been renewed with the intention of developing new methods efficient in both yield and stereoselective control. Here, we report an enzymatic approach for the oxidative dearomatization of indoles in the asymmetric synthesis of a variety of furoindolines with a vicinal quaternary carbon stereogenic center. This approach depends on the activity of a flavin-dependent monooxygenase, TsrE, which is involved in the biosynthesis of bicyclic thiopeptide antibiotic thiostrepton. TsrE catalyzes 2,3-epoxidation and subsequent epoxide opening in a highly enantioselective manner during the conversion of 2-methyl-indole-3-acetic acid or 2-methyl-tryptophol to furoindoline, with up to >99 % conversion and >99 % ee under mild reaction conditions. Complementing current chemical methods for oxidative indole dearomatization, the TsrE activity-based approach enriches the toolbox in the asymmetric synthesis of products possessing a furoindoline skeleton.Global climate change is driving species' distributions towards the poles and mountain tops during both non-breeding and breeding seasons, leading to changes in the composition of natural communities. However, the degree of season differences in climate-driven community shifts has not been thoroughly investigated at large spatial scales. Based on continental-scale data from Europe and North America, we examined changes in bird community composition using the community temperature index (CTI) approach and compared the changes with observed regional temperature changes during 1980-2016. CTI increased faster in winter than in summer. This seasonal discrepancy is probably because individuals are less site-faithful in winter, and can more readily shift their wintering sites in response to weather in comparison to the breeding season. Regional long-term changes in community composition were positively associated with regional temperature changes during both seasons, but the pattern was only significant during summer due to high annual variability in winter communities. Annual changes in community composition were positively associated with the annual temperature changes during both seasons. The split-dose regimen with PicoPrep and bisacodyl is now the standard bowel preparation procedure for patients undergoing elective colonoscopy as it is superior to the same-day regimen with PicoPrep regarding colon cleansing and incomplete colonoscopy. Hence, the written and verbal information at our institution regarding the bowel preparation procedure was altered according to the split-dose regimen, emphasizing the importance of adequate oral fluid intake and complete intake of the solution in order to ensure a safe and effective procedure.The aim of this study is to compare health-related quality of life between inflammatory bowel disease patients and age-/gender-matched controls while taking into account comorbid conditions (such as diabetes and heart disease). Data from the 2015 and 2016 National Health Interview Survey were used. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (n = 951) were age- and gender-matched to noninflammatory bowel disease patients (n = 3,804). Patients with inflammatory bowel disease were more likely to be diagnosed with an airway disease (p less then .000), heart disease (p less then .000), or stomach cancer (p less then .001) than age- and gender-matched individuals without inflammatory bowel disease. Even after controlling for these comorbidities, sociodemographic characteristics as well as health-related behaviors, patients with inflammatory bowel disease had significantly lower health-related quality of life than individuals of the same age and gender. Inflammatory bowel disease appears to be associated with particularly low levels of health-related quality of life. Alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, and body mass index may be risk factors for a decreased health-related quality of life.The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of social determinants of health in affecting health outcomes. Our practice uses iodine 123I for diagnostic imaging of metastatic thyroid cancer for staging before 131I therapy, with images typically acquired 24 hours after administration of the radiopharmaceutical. We explored the feasibility of an additional 123I whole-body scan and retention measurement at 48 hours, with application of the model to estimate maximum tolerated activity of radioiodine before 131I treatment of metastatic thyroid cancer.

A 30-year-old man presented with repeated episodes of painless injuries in his feet and abnormally high body temperature. He was diagnosed with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis-a rare hereditary peripheral neuropathy characterized by decreased pain, reduced sweating, and autonomic neuropathy. Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis is also called hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type IV. 123I-MIBG myocardial scintigraphy showed reduced myocardial uptake (heart-to-mediastinum ratio 1.56 and 1.42 in the early and late phases, respectively; washout ratio, 49%), indicating autonomic dysfunction. This finding may contribute to the diagnosis of congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis and the semiquantitative evaluation of an autonomic dysfunction.

The split-dose regimen with PicoPrep and bisacodyl is now the standard bowel preparation procedure for patients undergoing elective colonoscopy as it is superior to the same-day regimen with PicoPrep regarding colon cleansing and incomplete colonoscopy. Hence, the written and verbal information at our institution regarding the bowel preparation procedure was altered according to the split-dose regimen, emphasizing the importance of adequate oral fluid intake and complete intake of the solution in order to ensure a safe and effective procedure.The aim of this study is to compare health-related quality of life between inflammatory bowel disease patients and age-/gender-matched controls while taking into account comorbid conditions (such as diabetes and heart disease). Data from the 2015 and 2016 National Health Interview Survey were used. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (n = 951) were age- and gender-matched to noninflammatory bowel disease patients (n = 3,804). Patients with inflammatory bowel disease were more likely to be diagnosed with an airway disease (p less then .000), heart disease (p less then .000), or stomach cancer (p less then .001) than age- and gender-matched individuals without inflammatory bowel disease. Even after controlling for these comorbidities, sociodemographic characteristics as well as health-related behaviors, patients with inflammatory bowel disease had significantly lower health-related quality of life than individuals of the same age and gender. Inflammatory bowel disease appears to be associated with particularly low levels of health-related quality of life. Alcohol consumption, smoking, physical activity, and body mass index may be risk factors for a decreased health-related quality of life.The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of social determinants of health in affecting health outcomes. Populations with high social risk are disproportionately impacted by the virus and its economic consequences. Primary care practices have a unique opportunity to implement interventions to mitigate their patients' unmet social needs, such as food and income insecurity. In this commentary, we outline key considerations for clinics implementing programs that identify and address patients' social needs in a way that promotes equity, quality, and sustainability. We provide examples from our own experience at a federally qualified health center. Despite concerted efforts over the past several decades, there have been limited therapeutic advances. Traditional chemotherapy offers a high response rate and rapid symptomatic improvement, but its benefit is fleeting, and relapse is quick and unforgiving. Immunotherapy has delivered improved outcomes for patients with many cancers and there was compelling rationale for development in SCLC. While initial efforts with cytotoxic T-lymphocyte protein-4 inhibitors failed to improve upon chemotherapy alone, the addition of programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) inhibitors to first-line chemotherapy finally provided long-awaited gains in survival. Atezolizumab, when added to carboplatin and etoposide, improved both progression-free survival and overall survival. Durvalumab, when added to platinum plus etoposide, similarly improved OS. Biomarker development has stalled as PD-L1 expression and tumor mutational burden have not been useful predictive biomarkers. However, based on the significant survival improvements, both atezolizumab and durvalumab were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration to be given with first-line chemotherapy, and these regimens represent the new standards of care for SCLC.

Many cancer patients who receive chemotherapy experience adverse drug effects. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) has promise to personalize chemotherapy drug dosing to maximize efficacy and safety. Fluoropyrimidines and irinotecan have well-known germline PGx associations. At our institution, we have delivered PGx clinical decision support (CDS) based on preemptively obtained genotyping results for a large number of non-oncology medications since 2012, but have not previously evaluated the utility of this strategy for patients initiating anti-cancer regimens. We hypothesize that providing oncologists with preemptive germline PGx information along with CDS will enable individualized dosing decisions and result in improved patient outcomes.
Patients with oncologic malignancies for whom fluoropyrimidine and/or irinotecan-inclusive therapy is being planned will be enrolled and randomly assigned to PGx and control arms. Patients will be genotyped in a clinical laboratory across panels that include actionable variants in oncology treatment planning.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in lower urinary tract symptoms and quality of life (QoL) after combination therapy of solifenacin and mirabegron in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia presenting with persistent storage symptoms after treatment with tamsulosin.

Previous work by ourselves and others showed that mitoquinone (mitoQ) reduced oxidative damage and prevented hepatic fat accumulation in **** made obese with high-fat (HF) feeding. Here we extended these studies to examine the effect of mitoQ on parameters affecting liver function in rats treated with HF to induce obesity and in rats treated with HF plus streptozotocin (STZ) to model a severe form of type 2 diabetes. In prior reported work, we found that mitoQ significantly improved glycemia based on glucose tolerance data in HF rats but not in the diabetic rats. Here we found only non-significant reductions in insulin and glucose measured in the fed state at sacrifice in the HF **** treated with mitoQ. Metabolomic data showed that mitoQ altered several hepatic metabolic pathways in HF-fed obese rats toward those observed in control normal chow-fed non-obese rats. However, mitoQ had little effect on pathways observed in the diabetic rats, wherein diabetes itself induced marked pathway aberrations. MitoQ did not alter respiration or membrane potential in isolated liver mitochondria. MitoQ reduced liver fat and liver hydroperoxide levels but did not improve liver function as marked by circulating levels of aspartate and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). In summary, our results for HF-fed rats are consistent with past findings in HF-fed **** indicating decreased liver lipid hydroperoxides (LPO) and improved glycemia. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a ubiquitous molecule in living organisms serving as a cofactor in energy production. Epidemiological studies have reported low CoQ10 levels being associated with an increased risk of various cancers. We conducted the first study to evaluate the association of CoQ10 concentrations with lung cancer risk.
A nested case-control study including 201 lung cancer cases and 395 matched controls from the Southern Community Cohort Study was conducted. Plasma CoQ10 levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with photo-diode array detection. Conditional logistic regression models were applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between plasma CoQ10 levels and lung cancer risk.
Plasma CoQ10 concentration was inversely associated with the risk of lung cancer. After adjusting for age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status, the OR (95% CI) comparing the third to first tertile was 0.57 (0.36-0.91, P for trend=0.02). Further adjustments for smoking, alcohol, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and body mass index attenuated the point estimate slightly (OR=0.60, 95% CI=0.34-1.08, P for trend=0.11), comparing third to first tertiles. Stratified analyses identified a significant inverse association between plasma CoQ10 levels and lung cancer risk in current smokers, but not in former/never smokers. The association was more evident in cases who were diagnosed within 1year of blood draw than in cases diagnosed after 1year.

At present, it is a challenge to distinguish among the many pathologies of swallowing due to the absence of quantitative tools. We objectively quantified tongue kinematics from ultrasound imaging during infant and adult feeding. The functional advantage of this method is presented in several subjects with swallowing difficulties. We demonstrated for the first time the differences in tongue kinematics during breast- and bottle-feeding, showing the arrhythmic sucking pattern during bottle-feeding as compared with breastfeeding in the same infant with torticollis. The method clearly displayed the improvement of tongue motility after frenotomy in infants with either tongue-tie or restrictive labial frenulum. The analysis also revealed the absence of posterior tongue peristalsis required for safe swallowing in an infant with dysphagia. We also analyzed for the first time the tongue kinematics in an adult during water bolus swallowing demonstrating tongue peristaltic-like movements in both anterior and posterior segments. First, the anterior segment undulates to close off the oral cavity and the posterior segment held the bolus, and then, the posterior tongue propelled the bolus to the pharynx. The present methodology of quantitative imaging revealed highly conserved patterns of tongue kinematics that can differentiate between swallowing pathologies and evaluate treatment interventions. The method is novel and objective and has the potential to advance knowledge about the normal swallowing and management of feeding disorders.

The method is novel and objective and has the potential to advance knowledge about the normal swallowing and management of feeding disorders. 5-Methoxy-N,N-diisopropyltryptamine (5-MeO-DIPT) is a synthetic orally active hallucinogenic tryptamine analogue. The present study examined whether the effects of 5-MeO-DIPT involve the serotonin transporter (SERT) and serotonin 5-hydroxytryptamine-1A (5-HT ) receptor in the striatum and prefrontal cortex (PFC). We investigated the effects of 5-MeO-DIPT on extracellular 5-HT (5-HT ) and dopamine (DA ) levels in the striatum and PFC in wildtype and SERT knockout (KO) mice using in vivo microdialysis, and for comparison the effects of the 5-HT receptor antagonist WAY100635 and the 5-HT receptor agonist 8-OH-DPAT on 5-HT . 5-MeO-DIPT decreased 5-HT levels in the striatum, but not PFC. In SERT-KO mice, 5-MeO-DIPT did not affect 5-HT levels in the striatum or PFC. In the presence of WAY100635, 5-MeO-DIPT substantially increased 5-HT levels, suggesting that 5-MeO-DIPT acts on SERT and these effects are masked by its 5-HT actions in the absence of WAY100635. 8-OH-DPAT decreased 5-HT levels in the striatum and PFC in wildtype mice.0 Comments 0 Shares 16 Views 0 Reviews
