AbstractMicroplastic particles have become ubiquitous in aquatic environments and can be found in large numbers in riverine, estuarine, and marine settings at the surface of water, in suspension, and as particles deposited at the bed. The transport and settling behavior of small microplastic particles is likely very dependent on interactions with other suspended particles. Here we show from settling tube experiments conducted in the laboratory that fragments and threads of polyvinylchloride microplastic in the size range of 63-125 µm readily flocculated with fine-grained natural sediment under relative particle number concentrations that can be observed in nature in high-turbidity estuarine and coastal environments. The implication of this flocculation is that the microplastic particles are suspended and transported incorporated in aggregates that settle faster than the individual microplastic particles. Results of reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction indicate that mRNAs of these three genes are most abundant in the foot, followed by the gill. However, hypotaurine and thiotaurine levels, measured by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, were low in the foot and high in the gill. In addition, thiotaurine was detected in hemolymph cells. Our dataset ranged from a 2.58-mm juvenile with only 16 eyes to adults of 25-31 mm with up to 557 eyes each. This allowed us to investigate the organization (and potential constraints therein) of these sensory structures and their development. Chiton eyes are constrained to a narrowly defined region of the shell, and data from T. lebruni indicate that they are arranged roughly bilaterally symmetrically. We found deviations from symmetry of up to 10%, similar to irregularity reported in some other animals with multiplied eyes. Distances separating successive eyes indicate that, while shell growth slows during the life of an individual chiton, eyes are generated at regular time intervals. Although we could not identify a specific eye-producing tissue or organ, we propose that the generation of new eyes is controlled by a clock-like mechanism with a stable periodicity. The apparent regularity and organization of the chiton visual system are far greater than previously appreciated. This does not imply the integration of shell eyes to form composite images, but symmetry and regular organization could be equally beneficial to a highly duplicated system by ensuring even and comprehensive sampling of the total field of view.

We linked period birth/infant death files for 2012-2015 with US Census poverty estimates and county urban-rural classifications. We grouped the causes of term infant deaths as sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), congenital malformations, perinatal conditions, and all other causes. We computed the distribution and relative risk of overall and cause-specific term infant mortality rates (term IMRs) per 1000 live births and 95% CIs for county-level factors.
The increase in term IMR across county poverty and urban-rural classification was mostly driven by an increase in the rate of SUDI. The relative risk of term infant deaths as a result of SUDI was 1.6 (95% CI, 1.5-1.8) times higher in medium-poverty counties and 2.3 (95% CI, 1.2-2.5) times higher in high-poverty counties than in low-poverty counties. Cause-specific IMRs of congenital malformations, perinatal conditions, and death from other causes did not differ by county poverty level. We found similar trends across county urban-rural classification. Sudden infant death syndrome was the main cause of SUDI across both county poverty levels and urban-rural classifications, followed by unknown causes and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed.
Interventions aimed at reducing SUDI, particularly in high-poverty and rural areas, could have a major effect on reducing term IMR disparities between the United States and other developed countries.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) has a poor prognosis-despite aggressive primary treatment composed of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, median survival is still around 15 months. It starts to grow again after a year of treatment and eventually nothing is effective at this stage. Recurrent GBM is one of the most disappointing fields for researchers in which their efforts have gained no benefit for patients. They were directed for a long time towards understanding the molecular basis that leads to the development of GBM. It is now known that GBM is a heterogeneous disease and resistance comes mainly from the regrowth of malignant cells after eradicating specific clones by targeted treatment. Epidermal growth factor receptor, platelet derived growth factor receptor, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor are known to be highly active in primary and recurrent GBM through different underlying pathways, despite this bevacizumab is the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drug for recurrent GBM.lar pathways that are involved in GBM's recurrence, we will also review the most relevant and recent clinical experience with targeted treatments and immunotherapies. We will discuss trials utilised tyrosine receptor kinase inhibitors, immunotherapy and gene therapy in recurrent GBM pointing to the causes of potential disappointing preliminary results of some of them. Additionally, we are suggesting a possible future treatment based on recent successful clinical data that could alter the outcome for GBM patients.
The use of neo-adjuvant radiotherapy (NRT) has been proven effective at improving cancer related outcome measures, including overall-survival (OS) in the management of solid cancers. However, its utilisation in breast cancer has not been explored to the extent of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). The evidence for the application of NRT in breast cancer is evaluated.
PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases were searched systematically in August 2020 for studies that addressed the role of NRT in the treatment of breast cancer. Studies were deemed eligible if they reported on objective outcome measurements of OS, disease free-survival (DFS) or pathological complete response (pCR) and attained a satisfactory quality assessment.
A total of 23 studies reported upon 3,766 patients who had received NRT of which 3,233 also received NAC concurrently (neo-adjuvant chemo-radiotherapy (NCRT)). The pCR values ranged from 14% to 42%, 5-year DFS 61.4% to 81% and 5-year OS 71.6% to 84.2%. Complications were conese factors warrant further exploration within randomised controlled-trials.
Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder (NECGB) is a rare pathological entity. They are found to be aggressive cancers. Treatment strategies are based largely on extrapolation from other small cell cancers. Survival is poor compared to adenocarcinoma. Data from low- and middle-income countries are sparse.
All patients with metastatic NECGB treated in our centre were identified. Their treatment details were captured from electronic medical records. Baseline characteristics were noted and survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meir method.
A total of 15 patients were included. The median age was 55 years. Large cell comprises 2/15 and small cell was found in 13/15 patients. Chemotherapy was platinum-based in 12 patients. The response to first-line chemotherapy was partial in 3 (20%), stable disease in 2 (13.3%) and progressive disease in 10 (66.6%). After a median duration of follow-up of 12 months, the median progression free survival was 3 months and the median overall survival was 5 months.

We present a case of a 59-year-old male patient with a left renal mass detected by computed tomography scan. He underwent radical nephrectomy and the histopathological study reported a primary undifferentiated liposarcoma of the kidney without nodal involvement. An audit at a major Paediatric Oncology Department in Turkey was performed to determine its impact on paediatric cancer care. A comparison was made among the number of daily paediatric cancer patients, diagnostic and treatment procedures. The data for the 'COVID-19 period' (10 March to 31 October 2020) were compared with the corresponding 'prior year control period' (10 March to 31 October 2019). Moreover, presentation delay (duration between first symptoms to healthcare visit) was calculated for new cases. The findings indicate that the mean 34.7 outpatients per day during 'COVID-19 period' was significantly lower than the 'prior year control period' (52.2). There were 17.7 inpatients per day during the 'COVID-19 period' which was significantly lower than 23.8 inpatients per day during the 'prior year control period'. Significant reduction in the daily mean number of patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and imaging studies during the 'COVID-19 period' was also evident. A negative trend in the diagnosis of new paediatric cancers was evident with 128 new cancer cases during the 'COVID-19 period', whereas the corresponding number was 212 for the 'prior year control period'. The presentation delay (median 31 days) remain unchanged during the 'COVID-19 period'. The findings suggest significant damage to paediatric cancer care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Appropriate obligatory actions by oncology societies and policymakers can minimise longer term negative impacts.
Breast and cervical cancers are leading causes of cancer morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Most women present with advanced-stage disease and have poor outcomes. This study aimed to describe anticipated help-seeking behaviour for possible breast and cervical cancer symptoms, barriers to accessing health care and factors associated with less timely anticipated help-seeking in urban and rural settings in Uganda and South Africa (SA).
We conducted a cross-sectional community-based survey between August and December 2018. Data were collected from one randomly selected woman per household using the African Women Awareness of CANcer breast and cervical cancer tool. Anticipated help-seeking behaviour was dichotomised into waiting <1week or ≥1 week to seek care. Multivariable analysis identified factors associated with anticipated help-seeking behaviour.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW Opioids are the only class of drug with the proven ability to control severe pain. The introduction of stringent opioid prescribing restrictions has inevitably impacted upon the ability of those prescribing opioids for advanced life-limited disease to practice as previously and could limit the supply of adequate pain relief to patients with cancer. This review considers the evidence that symptom management of patients with advanced cancer contributes to the "opioid problem" and whether there is adequate recognition of the risks involved. RECENT FINDINGS The literature suggests that the risk of opioid abuse is low in the palliative care population as is the risk of legal consequences for doctors prescribing opioids at the end of life. However, as many patients with cancer are living longer or surviving with chronic pain, palliative care physicians must be cognisant not only of the risks of long term opioid use but also of the risk of opioid misuse. Adherence to evidence or consensus-based guidelines is necessary to avoid inappropriate prescribing. In palliative care, it is appropriate not only to exercise a reasonable degree of opioid control and surveillance, primarily for the good of society, but also to ensure that the ability to treat pain in patients with advanced malignant disease is not compromised.BACKGROUND There is little evidence about possible effects of pelvic anatomical characteristics on proctological complications. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential correlation between sagittal pelvic position and rectal prolapse. METHODS A study was conducted on a proctology patients and patients without any specific history of proctological disorders who were divided into two groups according to the presence or the absence of rectal prolapse. In all cases, the pelvic angle was measured with a pelvic goniometer and categorized as posterior ( 15°). To minimize effects of potential confounders in the analysis, 31 nearest neighbor propensity score matching (PSM) method was implemented using age, sex, and diagnose of rectal disorders as confounding variables. RESULTS Among the 143 screened patients, posterior tilt was more frequent in the 19 patients with rectal prolapse than in those without prolapse (42 vs. 18%; p = 0.027). This result was also confirmed in the post-PSM analysis (42 vs. 14%; p = 0.036) using 35 propensity score (PS)-matched controls compared with the rectal prolapse group. Posterior tilt was associated with an increased risk of prolapse in both the unmatched population (odds ratio = 3.37; p = 0.020) and PS-matched subset (odds ratio = 4.36; p = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS A posterior pelvic angle was more frequently associated with the diagnosis of rectal prolapse. In both the entire population and in the PS-matched subset, posterior tilt was a significant risk factor for rectal prolapse. The easy-to-do investigation of the pelvic angle can provide several benefits in terms of rectal prolapse prevention and more precise management of post-surgical prolapse recurrence.Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV and may avoid disclosing their sexual preferences to others. We analyzed data from the 2014 and 2017 Seattle-area surveys of MSM from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system. Skin tissues were taken 14 days after the operation; CD31 and Ki-67 immunohistochemistry was exerted to evaluate neovascularization and proliferation. Human microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) cells were cultured in vitro. miR-27b mimics or inhibitor was transfected to construct over-expression or inhibition cell lines. MTT assay, scratch test, and angiogenesis test were used to evaluate cell proliferation, migration, and vascular regeneration. Finally, RT-PCR and Western blot were exerted to determine the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C), epidermal growth factor (EGF) mRNAs, and protein, respectively.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Opioids are the only class of drug with the proven ability to control severe pain. The introduction of stringent opioid prescribing restrictions has inevitably impacted upon the ability of those prescribing opioids for advanced life-limited disease to practice as previously and could limit the supply of adequate pain relief to patients with cancer. This review considers the evidence that symptom management of patients with advanced cancer contributes to the "opioid problem" and whether there is adequate recognition of the risks involved. RECENT FINDINGS The literature suggests that the risk of opioid abuse is low in the palliative care population as is the risk of legal consequences for doctors prescribing opioids at the end of life. However, as many patients with cancer are living longer or surviving with chronic pain, palliative care physicians must be cognisant not only of the risks of long term opioid use but also of the risk of opioid misuse. Adherence to evidence or consensus-based guidelines is necessary to avoid inappropriate prescribing. In palliative care, it is appropriate not only to exercise a reasonable degree of opioid control and surveillance, primarily for the good of society, but also to ensure that the ability to treat pain in patients with advanced malignant disease is not compromised.BACKGROUND There is little evidence about possible effects of pelvic anatomical characteristics on proctological complications. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential correlation between sagittal pelvic position and rectal prolapse. METHODS A study was conducted on a proctology patients and patients without any specific history of proctological disorders who were divided into two groups according to the presence or the absence of rectal prolapse. In all cases, the pelvic angle was measured with a pelvic goniometer and categorized as posterior ( 15°). To minimize effects of potential confounders in the analysis, 31 nearest neighbor propensity score matching (PSM) method was implemented using age, sex, and diagnose of rectal disorders as confounding variables. RESULTS Among the 143 screened patients, posterior tilt was more frequent in the 19 patients with rectal prolapse than in those without prolapse (42 vs. 18%; p = 0.027). This result was also confirmed in the post-PSM analysis (42 vs. 14%; p = 0.036) using 35 propensity score (PS)-matched controls compared with the rectal prolapse group. Posterior tilt was associated with an increased risk of prolapse in both the unmatched population (odds ratio = 3.37; p = 0.020) and PS-matched subset (odds ratio = 4.36; p = 0.028). CONCLUSIONS A posterior pelvic angle was more frequently associated with the diagnosis of rectal prolapse. In both the entire population and in the PS-matched subset, posterior tilt was a significant risk factor for rectal prolapse. The easy-to-do investigation of the pelvic angle can provide several benefits in terms of rectal prolapse prevention and more precise management of post-surgical prolapse recurrence.Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV and may avoid disclosing their sexual preferences to others. With a long experience in evaluating public health measures in the fields of HIV and drug addiction at national level, the Evaluation and Expertise in Public Health sector (CEESAN, Unisanté, Switzerland) has also been monitoring the situation in the canton of Vaud for more than twenty years. In this article, we present two instruments developed for epidemiological monitoring purposes the « Pointage annuel du profil des usager·ère·s des structures à bas-seuil d'accès » (PAPU, annual measure of users of low-threshold facilities' profile) and the online platform for opioid agonist treatments. The data collected through these two instruments provide information on the main characteristics of precarious drug users in the canton and help to guide public policy in this field.Physicians, pharmacists and caregivers, as well as public health officials and citizens, must sort through the enormous amount of information circulating about the pandemic. This crisis is accompanied by a real « infodemic » via multiple media, digital and otherwise. Is circulating a mixture of reliable information but also of misinformation, fed by the obscurantism jeopardizing the implementation of interventions such as vaccination or mask-wearing. To address this infodemic, evidence-based and data-driven public health should be strengthened. Debuting rumors - « see something, say something » - and promoting credible information limit misinformation. Strengthening people's knowledge in population health science would also help.Public health surveillance is the systematic and ongoing collection, analysis and interpretation of data to produce information useful for decision-making. With the development of data science, surveillance methods are evolving through access to big data. More data does not automatically mean more information. For example, the massive amounts of data on Covid-19 was not easily transformed in useful information for decision-making. Further, data scientists have often difficulties to make their analyses useful for decision-making. For the implementation of evidence-based and data-driven public health practice, the culture of public health surveillance and population health monitoring needs to be strengthened.The life course epidemiology is an interdisciplinary approach to health resulting from the convergence of centres of interest in social epidemiology, natural sciences (biology, genetics) and social sciences (psychology, sociology, history). It examines the origin of chronic diseases in the past of individuals, considering the duration and timing of exposure to different risk factors, throughout the life of the individual, from gestation to an advanced age. The life course epidemiology is interested as **** in bio-psycho-social determinants as in environmental and societal influences on the trajectories of health and various diseases, either somatic or psychic.A consortium of Swiss universities has set up a dashboard providing daily 7-day epidemic forecasting for 209 countries and territories around the world. Relayed on social networks, international media, and the sites of major public health agencies, these forecasts can help guiding public policy. However, the time horizon of these forecasts is limited and their accuracy is sometimes questionable, even at 7 days. Interdisciplinary research aimed at increasing the complexity of mathematical models can improve the accuracy of the forecasts provided.The measures put in place to fight the Covid-19 pandemic have a strong impact on many programs to fight several other infectious diseases in Africa. The disruption of drug and equipment supply chains, the interruption of therapies, or the under-detection of new cases produce excess morbidity and mortality linked to many other diseases, including HIV, malaria and tuberculosis. Such an analysis will have to be repeated once the 2nd wave is over in order to estimate the overall impact of the epidemic on excess mortality in Switzerland.During the first wave of Covid-19, hospital professionals had to quickly adapt their practices and introduce several changes in the organization of work and patient care. In this study, we were interested in how these changes were experienced by the professionals of 11 hospitals in French-speaking Switzerland. The results underline the importance of support between colleagues and between services in this crisis, which seems to have been marked by an improvement in interprofessional coordination and collaboration. The support of direct managers also seems to have been crucial but largely dependent on their leadership skills. Respondents emphasized the need for a transparent institutional communication.
Classification of breast lesions into different cytological groups can accurately be done using the International Academy of Cytology (IAC) Yokohama System for reporting breast cytopathology. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of breast lesions has been considered to be the primary investigation in detecting breast cancers, especially in low-cost settings. The main objective of this study was to prospectively re-confirm the diagnostic accuracy of breast FNAB using the IAC Yokohama system. Additionally, separate secondary subgroup analysis was done to confirm the accuracy of breast FNAB excluding lymph-node positive and lymphadenopathy positive tumors.
A prospective study was done on patients undergoing biopsy of breast lesions between September 01, 2019 and November 30, 2020 (519 biopsies on 487 unique patients). Of these 519 histopathology biopsies, 505 had corresponding FNAB report of the same site. The FNAB was reported using the IAC Yokohama system and the most suitable category was allotted in every case.

Early childhood asthma diagnosis is common; however, many children diagnosed before age 5 experience symptom resolution and it remains difficult to identify individuals whose symptoms will persist. Our objective was to develop machine learning models to identify which individuals diagnosed with asthma before age 5 continue to experience asthma-related visits. We curated a retrospective dataset for 9,934 children derived from electronic health record (EHR) data. We trained five machine learning models to differentiate individuals without subsequent asthma-related visits (transient diagnosis) from those with asthma-related visits between ages 5 and 10 (persistent diagnosis) given clinical information up to age 5 years. Based on average NPV-Specificity area (ANSA), all models performed significantly better than random chance, with XGBoost obtaining the best performance (0.43 mean ANSA). Feature importance analysis indicated age of last asthma diagnosis under 5 years, total number of asthma related visits, self-identified black race, allergic rhinitis, and eczema as important features. Although our models appear to perform well, a lack of prior models utilizing a large number of features to predict individual persistence makes direct comparison infeasible. However, feature importance analysis indicates our models are consistent with prior research indicating diagnosis age and prior health service utilization as important predictors of persistent asthma. We therefore find that machine learning models can predict which individuals will experience persistent asthma with good performance and may be useful to guide clinician and parental decisions regarding asthma counselling in early childhood.Myocardial velocities carry important diagnostic information in a range of cardiac diseases, and play an important role in diagnosing and grading left ventricular diastolic dysfunction. Tissue Phase Mapping (TPM) Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) enables discrete sampling of the myocardium's underlying smooth and continuous velocity field. This paper presents a post-processing framework for constructing a spatially and temporally smooth and continuous representation of the myocardium's velocity field from TPM data. In the proposed scheme, the velocity field is represented through either linear or cubic B-spline basis functions. The framework facilitates both interpolation and noise reducing approximation. As a proof-of-concept, the framework was evaluated using artificially noisy (i.e., synthetic) velocity fields created by adding different levels of noise to an original TPM data. The framework's ability to restore the original velocity field was investigated using Bland-Altman statistics. Moreover, we calculated myocardial material point trajectories through temporal integration of the original and synthetic fields. The effect of noise reduction on the calculated trajectories was investigated by assessing the distance between the start and end position of material points after one complete cardiac cycle (end point error). We found that the Bland-Altman limits of agreement between the original and the synthetic velocity fields were reduced after application of the framework. Furthermore, the integrated trajectories exhibited consistently lower end point error. These results suggest that the proposed method generates a realistic continuous representation of myocardial velocity fields from noisy and discrete TPM data. Linear B-splines resulted in narrower limits of agreement between the original and synthetic fields, compared to Cubic B-splines. Data from 193 eyes of 165 patients (76.4 ± 8.3 years old) with preoperative corneal astigmatism exceeding 0.75 diopters who had undergone phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation were collected and analyzed. Corneal astigmatism, refractive astigmatism, and uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were evaluated before and 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after surgery. The degree of IOL decentration, IOL tilt, and toric axis misalignment was assessed at 1 day and 1 month postoperatively. Fifty eyes received AcrySof toric IOL, 51 eyes TECNIS toric IOL, 46 eyes HOYA 355 toric IOL, and 46 eyes HOYA XY-1 toric IOL. The amount of axis misalignment from the intended axis was significantly different among IOLs (p = 0.004, one-way ANOVA), and HOYA XY-1 showed significantly less amount of axis misalignment than TECNIS (p = 0.020, Tukey's multiple comparison) and HOYA 355 (p = 0.010). The proportion of eyes that showed axis misalignment less then 10° at 1 month postoperatively was significantly higher with HOYA XY-1 toric IOL than with other toric IOLs (χ2 test, p = 0.020). HOYA XY-1 toric IOL, the modified version of HOYA 355 toric IOL, showed excellent rotational stability in comparison with other models of toric IOLs.
Sofosbuvir and ledipasvir-sofosbuvir are both newer direct-acting antiviral agents for the treatment of hepatitis C. The high list prices for both drugs have led to concern about the budget impact for public drug coverage programs. Therefore, we studied the impact of public prescription drug coverage for both drugs on utilization, adherence, and public and private expenditure in British Columbia, Canada.
We used provincial administrative claims data from January 2014 to June 2017 for all individuals historically tested for either hepatitis C and/or human immunodeficiency virus. Using interrupted time series analysis, we examined the impact of public insurance coverage on treatment uptake, adherence (proportion of days covered), and public and private expenditures.
Over our study period, 4,462 treatment initiations were eligible for analysis (1,131 sofosbuvir and 3,331 ledipasvir-sofosbuvir, which include 19 patients initiated on both treatments). We found the start of public coverage for sofosbuvir and ledipasvir-sofosbuvir increased treatment uptake by 154%.

This paper presents a post-processing framework for constructing a spatially and temporally smooth and continuous representation of the myocardium's velocity field from TPM data. In the proposed scheme, the velocity field is represented through either linear or cubic B-spline basis functions. The framework facilitates both interpolation and noise reducing approximation. As a proof-of-concept, the framework was evaluated using artificially noisy (i.e., synthetic) velocity fields created by adding different levels of noise to an original TPM data. The framework's ability to restore the original velocity field was investigated using Bland-Altman statistics. Moreover, we calculated myocardial material point trajectories through temporal integration of the original and synthetic fields. The effect of noise reduction on the calculated trajectories was investigated by assessing the distance between the start and end position of material points after one complete cardiac cycle (end point error). We found that the Bland-Altman limits of agreement between the original and the synthetic velocity fields were reduced after application of the framework. Furthermore, the integrated trajectories exhibited consistently lower end point error. These results suggest that the proposed method generates a realistic continuous representation of myocardial velocity fields from noisy and discrete TPM data. Linear B-splines resulted in narrower limits of agreement between the original and synthetic fields, compared to Cubic B-splines. Data from 193 eyes of 165 patients (76.4 ± 8.3 years old) with preoperative corneal astigmatism exceeding 0.75 diopters who had undergone phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation were collected and analyzed. Corneal astigmatism, refractive astigmatism, and uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) were evaluated before and 1 day, 1 week, and 1 month after surgery. The degree of IOL decentration, IOL tilt, and toric axis misalignment was assessed at 1 day and 1 month postoperatively. Fifty eyes received AcrySof toric IOL, 51 eyes TECNIS toric IOL, 46 eyes HOYA 355 toric IOL, and 46 eyes HOYA XY-1 toric IOL. The amount of axis misalignment from the intended axis was significantly different among IOLs (p = 0.004, one-way ANOVA), and HOYA XY-1 showed significantly less amount of axis misalignment than TECNIS (p = 0.020, Tukey's multiple comparison) and HOYA 355 (p = 0.010). The proportion of eyes that showed axis misalignment less then 10° at 1 month postoperatively was significantly higher with HOYA XY-1 toric IOL than with other toric IOLs (χ2 test, p = 0.020). Using interrupted time series analysis, we examined the impact of public insurance coverage on treatment uptake, adherence (proportion of days covered), and public and private expenditures. Over our study period, 4,462 treatment initiations were eligible for analysis (1,131 sofosbuvir and 3,331 ledipasvir-sofosbuvir, which include 19 patients initiated on both treatments). What is new, however, is the developing body of literature on the role of endoscopy in managing upper GI and small-bowel polyposis, as patients are living longer and improved endoscopic technologies have emerged. BACKGROUND Most of our knowledge of the biological basis of major depressive disorder (MDD) is derived from studies of chronic stress models in rodents. While these models capture certain aspects of the behavioral and neuroendocrine features of MDD, the extent to which they reproduce the molecular pathology of the human syndrome remains unknown. METHODS We systematically compared transcriptional signatures in two brain regions implicated in depression-medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens-of humans with MDD and of 3 chronic stress models in **** chronic variable stress, adult social isolation, and chronic social defeat stress. We used differential expression analysis combined with weighted gene coexpression network analysis to create interspecies gene networks and assess the capacity of each stress paradigm to recapitulate the transcriptional organization of gene networks in human MDD. RESULTS Our results show significant overlap between transcriptional alterations in medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens in human MDD and the 3 mouse chronic stress models, with each of the chronic stress paradigms capturing distinct aspects of MDD abnormalities. Chronic variable stress and adult social isolation better reproduce differentially expressed genes, while chronic social defeat stress and adult social isolation better reproduce gene networks characteristic of human MDD. We also identified several gene networks and their constituent genes that are most significantly associated with human MDD and mouse stress models. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the ability of 3 chronic stress models in **** to recapitulate distinct aspects of the broad molecular pathology of human MDD, with no one mouse model apparently better than another. Circ-ATAD1 expression was increased in cancerous tissues. The prognostic value of circ-ATAD1 was identified in GC patients. For GC cells, circ-ATAD1 increased cell progression by sponging miR-140-3p to upregulate YY1. Additionally, YY1 directly bound to the promoter of PCIF1, thereby activating its transcription. Collectively, circ-ATAD1 plays an important role in GC tumorigenesis and progression and might be an important biomarker/therapeutic target for GC. The PSS-induced ACE2 was involved in inhibiting proliferation and inflammation, as well as promoting NO production in ECs. PSS significantly increased ACE2 expression at transcriptional level via activating AMPKα2-KLF2 pathway. The humeral capitellum angle (α angle) measured on the sagittal view of computed tomography reconstructions corresponded to the height of the LHC fracture line; based on this height, the severity of LHC injury was categorized as subtype L (low fracture line, 60° less then α less then 90°), subtype M (moderate fracture line, 45° less then α less then 60°) or subtype H (high fracture line, α less then 45°). The therapeutic algorithm was countersunk compression screws for subtype L, lateral buttressing combined with/without an anterior antiglide mini-fragment plate for subtype M and a dorsolateral anatomical locking plate for subtype H.

Sertraline and fluoxetine are the two most commonly used selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the treatment of depression. Accumulating evidence has revealed that SSRIs can reduce the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but their therapeutic effects in HCC have not yet been elucidated. Sertraline and fluoxetine can synergize with sorafenib, the first approved standard therapy for advanced HCC, to inhibit the viability of HCC cells in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the combination of sorafenib and SSRIs synergistically inhibited the effects of the AKT/mTOR pathway. CCK-8 and transwell tests were then implemented to measure the proliferative, invasive and migratory capacities, and showed that knockdown of CANT1 blocked LUSC cells proliferation. miR-607, predicted as an upstream factor for CANT1, was declined in LUSC using TargetScan analysis and luciferase activity test. The aim of this study was to enrich, identify liver CSCs and investigate antitumor effects of CuB as well as explore the underlying molecular mechanisms in these liver CSCs. HepG2 cell lines were used for the enrichment of liver CSCs by serum-free medium culture and magnetic-activated cell sorting. The CSC characteristics were analyzed by immunofluorescent staining, sphere-forming, western blot and xenograft tumorigenicity assay. CuB' antitumor effects and underlying molecular mechanism were measured by cell counting kit-8, colony formation, sphere-forming, cell cycle, xenograft and western blot assay. Our results showed that we could enrich 97.29% CD133+ HepG2 cells, which possessed CSC characteristics including re-renewal capacity, proliferative ability, sorafenib resistance, overexpressed stemness-related molecules and enhanced tumorigenic potential. Furthermore, we also found that CuB inhibited cell viability, sphere formation, colony formation and arrested cell cycle at G2/M phase as well as sensitized CD133+ HepG2 cells to sorafenib in vitro and in vivo. Western blot assay indicated that CuB inhibited expression levels of cyclin B1, CDK1, CD133, p-JAK2 and p-STAT3. The influences of circ_0021093 silencing in vivo were measured by using xenograft models. Circ_0021093 was highly expressed in HCC tissues and cells, and its level was associated with poor prognosis of HCC patients.

CCK-8 and transwell tests were then implemented to measure the proliferative, invasive and migratory capacities, and showed that knockdown of CANT1 blocked LUSC cells proliferation. miR-607, predicted as an upstream factor for CANT1, was declined in LUSC using TargetScan analysis and luciferase activity test. Low miR-607 expression was related with unfavorable outcomes of LUSC patients. HepG2 cell lines were used for the enrichment of liver CSCs by serum-free medium culture and magnetic-activated cell sorting. The CSC characteristics were analyzed by immunofluorescent staining, sphere-forming, western blot and xenograft tumorigenicity assay. CuB' antitumor effects and underlying molecular mechanism were measured by cell counting kit-8, colony formation, sphere-forming, cell cycle, xenograft and western blot assay. Our results showed that we could enrich 97.29% CD133+ HepG2 cells, which possessed CSC characteristics including re-renewal capacity, proliferative ability, sorafenib resistance, overexpressed stemness-related molecules and enhanced tumorigenic potential. Furthermore, we also found that CuB inhibited cell viability, sphere formation, colony formation and arrested cell cycle at G2/M phase as well as sensitized CD133+ HepG2 cells to sorafenib in vitro and in vivo. It has also long been known that CCP1 expression is activated by neuronal injury; however, whether CCP1 plays a neuroprotective role after injury is unknown. Using shRNA-mediated knock-down of CCP1 in embryonic rat spinal cord cultures, we demonstrate that CCP1 protects spinal cord neurons from excitotoxic death. Unexpectedly, excitotoxic injury reduced CCP1 expression in our system. We previously demonstrated that the CCP1 homolog in Caenorhabditis elegans is important for maintenance of neuronal cilia. Although cilia enhance neuronal survival in some contexts, it is not yet clear whether CCP1 maintains cilia in mammalian spinal cord neurons. Interventional pain procedures have increased in complexity, often requiring longer radiation exposure times and subsequently higher doses. The practicing physician requires an in-depth knowledge and evidence-based knowledge of radiation safety to limit the health risks to themselves, patients and healthcare staff. The objective of this study was to examine current radiation safety practices and knowledge among interventional pain physicians and compare them to evidence-based recommendations.
A 49-question survey was developed based on an extensive review of national and international guidelines on radiation safety. The survey was web-based and distributed through the following professional organizations Association of Pain Program Directors, American Academy of Pain Medicine, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, European Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Therapy, International Neuromodulation Society, and North American Neuromodulation Society. Responses to radiation safety prians, staff and patients from unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation during interventional pain procedures.
We have identified deficiencies in the implementation of evidence-based practices and knowledge gaps in radiation safety. Further education and training are warranted for both fellowship training and postgraduate medical practice. Here, we characterize rMVAs expressing the S protein of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Modifications of full-length S individually or in combination included two proline substitutions, mutations of the furin recognition site, and deletion of the endoplasmic retrieval signal. Another rMVA in which the receptor binding domain (RBD) is flanked by the signal peptide and transmembrane domains of S was also constructed. Each modified S protein was displayed on the surface of rMVA-infected cells and was recognized by anti-RBD antibody and soluble hACE2 receptor. Intramuscular injection of **** with the rMVAs induced antibodies, which neutralized a pseudovirus in vitro and, upon passive transfer, protected hACE2 transgenic **** from lethal infection with SARS-CoV-2, as well as S-specific CD3+CD8+IFNγ+ T cells. Antibody boosting occurred following a second rMVA or adjuvanted purified RBD protein. Immunity conferred by a single vaccination of hACE2 **** prevented morbidity and weight loss upon intranasal infection with SARS-CoV-2 3 wk or 7 wk later. One or two rMVA vaccinations also prevented detection of infectious SARS-CoV-2 and subgenomic viral mRNAs in the lungs and greatly reduced induction of cytokine and chemokine mRNAs. A low amount of virus was found in the nasal turbinates of only one of eight rMVA-vaccinated **** on day 2 and none later. Detection of low levels of subgenomic mRNAs in turbinates indicated that replication was aborted in immunized animals.

In this study, we describe three species of Ametrodiplosis from Japan A. adetos n. sp. feeding in the flowers of Tylophora aristolochioides Miq. (Apocynaceae); A. aeroradicis n. sp. inducing aerial root galls on Trachelospermum asiaticum (Sieb. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/kenpaullone.html et Zucc.) Nakai and T. gracilipes var. liukiuense (Apocynaceae); and A. stellariae n. sp. forming leaf bud galls on Stellaria uliginosa Murray var. undulata (Thunb.) Ohwi (Caryophyllaceae). A molecular phylogenetic analysis using mitochondrial COI and ribosomal 16S genes and nuclear ribosomal 28S gene were conducted for the three new Ametrodiplisis species and other clinodiplosine taxa sequences available in GenBank. The analysis supported the monophyly of Ametrodiplosis despite the variable life history of the three species. In addition, it indicated very low intraspecific genetic divergence among the individuals from different localities and/or host plants. A taxonomic key to the three new Japanese species of Ametrodiplosis is provided.Two new species of the genus Odochilus Harold, 1877 (Coleoptera Scarabaeidae Aphodiinae Odochilini) from the Oriental Region are described as follows O. shavrini Rakovič Anichtchenko, new species from the Philippines (Mindanao) and O. borneensis Rakovič Anichtchenko, new species from Malaysia (Sarawak). Photographs of their habitus are presented. In this study, we reconstructed the gene tree based on COI gene, and reported one new species, H. oscillantenna He sp. nov. The new species is similar to H. eurylobus Ma, Liu Zhang, but differs in the color of fore femur and the structure of male genitalia. Calling songs and nymph morphology are also provided.
