After systematically checking the following electronic databases ISI web of Science, Scopus and PubMed without limitation in time and language up to February 2019, a pool based on a random effect model was established. Eighty-five eligible studies were entered for quantitative analysis. Our meta-analysis revealed that circulating adiponectin increased significantly after bariatric surgery [Standardized mean difference (SMD)=1.401, 95% CI 1.101, 1.701, p less then 0.001]; whilst leptin (SMD=-2.178, 95% CI -2.433, -1.923, p less then 0.001), PAI-1 (-14.928 ng/ml 95% CI -21.794, -8.063, p less then 0.001), and chemerin (-50.238 ng/ml 95% CI -85.708, -14.768, p less then 0.001) decreased. However, serum visfatin (2.05 ng/ml, 95% CI -5.07, 9.17, p=0.573) and resistin (-2.080 ng/ml, 95% CI -5.352, 1.192, p=0.21) were unchanged.   • PURPOSE To evaluate changes in refractive error and corneal tomographic measurements after 24-h monitoring of intraocular pressure patterns with a contact lens sensor (CLS). STUDY DESIGN Prospective, longitudinal, observational study. PATIENTS AND METHODS Fourteen eyes of 14 consecutive patients who underwent 24-h CLS monitoring were enrolled. The objective spherical equivalent (SE) refractive error was measured using automated refraction and keratometry. The axial power, instantaneous power, and corneal thickness at the central, paracentral, midperipheral, and peripheral cornea were measured with swept-source anterior-segment optical coherence tomography. Measurements were performed at baseline, immediately after monitoring, and at follow-up visits 2-4 days after monitoring. RESULTS The myopic SE increased significantly (P  less then  0.001) from - 5.1 ± 4.2 to - 6.0 ± 4.0, D after 24-h monitoring with a CLS and returned to the premonitoring level at the second visit (- 5.3 ± 4.4 D, P = 0.315). Decreases in the midperipheral and peripheral axial powers and the paracentral instantaneous power and increases in the central instantaneous power and peripheral corneal thickness occurred after CLS monitoring. CONCLUSION Twenty-four-hour monitoring with a CLS resulted in significant increases in the myopic refractive error and corneal central steepening and midperipheral flattening. Although these changes are transient and do not negate the clinical merits of the CLS, clinicians should be aware of these potential adverse events. The resulting fourth-order nonlinear differential equations are solved via a perturbation approach using the stream function. The effects of four dominant fluid parameters (shear thinning/thickening, power-law index, and zero- and infinite-shear-rate viscosity), magnetic parameter (Hartmann number), and metachronal wave parameters on fluid velocity, pressure rise per wavelength, and trapping phenomenon are shown in graphical results and explained thoroughly. Twelve patients with right hemispheric stroke and 15 healthy adults participated in this study. All participants were instructed to completed three experimental conditions-RTM, Move without reminding (Sham), and Remind with No-move (RNoM). In patients with stroke, RTM elicited higher level of activation than the Sham in the contralateral somatosensory association cortex, primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which has been found in healthy participants. However, effects of RTM were robust and more widely distributed in healthy participants, comparing to patients with stroke, comparatively RNoM showed no significant higher activation than the baseline in those areas in both populations.

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between laboratory measures of self-control, self-report measures, and the degree to which control might be related to extensive experience in activities that logically require self-control. RESULTS Fluid intelligence and sex were significant predictors of the composite measure, but bilingualism, music training, video gaming, mindfulness/meditation, self-control, impulsivity, SES, and physical exercise were not. CONCLUSIONS Common laboratory measures of inhibitory control do not correlate with self-reported measures of self-control or impulsivity and consequently appear to be measuring different constructs. Bilingualism, mindfulness/meditation, playing action video games, and music training or performance provide weak and inconsistent improvements to laboratory measures of interference control. Flanker, Simon, and spatial Stroop effects should not be used or interpreted as measures of domain-general inhibitory control."Remind-to-Move" (RTM) has been developed and used as a new treatment for rehabilitation of upper extremity functions in patients with hemiplegia. This study aimed to investigate the cortical activation patterns using functional near-infrared spectroscopic topography for patients with chronic stroke receiving RTM by comparing with their healthy counterparts. Twelve patients with right hemispheric stroke and 15 healthy adults participated in this study. All participants were instructed to completed three experimental conditions-RTM, Move without reminding (Sham), and Remind with No-move (RNoM). In patients with stroke, RTM elicited higher level of activation than the Sham in the contralateral somatosensory association cortex, primary motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which has been found in healthy participants. However, effects of RTM were robust and more widely distributed in healthy participants, comparing to patients with stroke, comparatively RNoM showed no significant higher activation than the baseline in those areas in both populations.

More than 70 differential metabolites were detected and enriched in their metabolic pathways. Dynamic metabolites changes in enrichment pathways under heat stress showed that heat stress enhanced the degradation of unsaturated fatty acids and nucleotides, increased the content of amino acids and vitamins, and accelerated glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle in P. ostreatus. The time course changes of P. ostreatus metabolites under continuous heat stress demonstrated that amino acids continuously changed with heat stress, nucleotides clearly changed with heat stress at 12 and 48 h, and lipids exhibited an increasing trend with prolonged heat stress, while few types saccharides and vitamins changed under heat stress.   • Chronic adenoiditis leading to adenoid hypertrophy is common in children. Many cases would also have co-existing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). Infact, long lasting bacterial infection of the adenoids has been hypothesized to be the cause for CRS in these children. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the departments of ENT and Micro-biology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, India between 2016 and 2017. 20 subjects who were diagnosed with CRS and adenoid hypertrophy took part in the study. Aerobic, anaerobic and fungal culture sensitivity of adenoid tissue was done along with aerobic and fungal culture sensitivity of nasal swabs from middle meatus. 2 out of 20 adenoid samples showed positive culture for aerobes and 19 adenoid samples grew anaerobic organisms. 7 out of 20 nasal swabs grew some aerobes and 2 were positive for fungal organisms. The correlation of microorganisms between adenoid hypertrophy and CRS was seen only in one patient in which methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus was grown. The present study showed mixed flora in the adenoid samples with anaerobic predominance. Aerobes were predominantly grown in nasal swabs from patients with CRS along with fungal colonizers. Though the study does not establish any bacteriological association with the CRS in our cohorts, the significant growth of the anaerobes from the core of the inflamed adenoids has prompted us to suggest the inclusion of the antibiotics against the anaerobes in the medical management of these children, whenever feasible. We think the addition of specific antibiotics to tackle anaerobes helps by hampering the further inflammatory hypertrophy of adenoid tissue. © Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2020.To study the clinical presentation and management outcomes in a series of patients with invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis presenting to a tertiary care center in central India. Medical records of eleven consecutive cases of invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis were reviewed. All clinically diagnosed cases, confirmed on microbiological examination were included. Their demographic data, clinical manifestations, underlying systemic conditions, microbiological and radiological reports, medical treatments, and surgical interventions were recorded and analyzed. There were nine male and two female patients with mean age of 46.8 years. Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus was noted in all patients. One patient had history of renal transplantation. The common presenting features were-ophthalmoplegia (73%), diminution of vision, (64%) proptosis (36%) and periorbital swelling (27%). CT scan/MRI revealed sino-orbital involvement in eight cases and rhino-orbital-cerebral involvement in three cases. Ethmoid sinus (100%) was the commonest paranasal sinus involved. KOH preparation and histopathology revealed broad aseptate filamentous fungi branching at right angles with tissue invasion. Culture on sabouraud's dextrose agar showed growth of mucor species. All patients received intravenous amphotericin B and had undergone radical debridement of involved sinuses. The mean duration of follow up was 13 months. All survived except three, who developed cerebral mucormycosis. Rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis is a fetal fungal infection requiring multidisciplinary approach. Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus is the main predisposing factor. Masseteric nerve has numerous advantages like its proximity to the facial nerve, stronger motor impulse, its reliability, low morbidity in harvesting and sacrificing the nerve and faster re-innervation that is achievable in most patients. The present case series demonstrate the surgical technique and the effectiveness of the masseteric nerve as donor for early facial reanimation. Between January 2017 and February 2019, 6 patients (2 male, 4 female) with iatrogenic unilateral complete facial paralysis (grade VI, House Brackmann scale) who underwent masseteric-facial nerve anastomosis were included in the study. The time interval between the onset of paralysis and surgery ranged from 4 to 18 months (mean 8.5 months). In all patients pre-operative electromyography had facial mimetic muscle fibrillation potentials. All patients underwent end to end anastomosis except for one patient where greater auricular interposition graft was used.

  • BCI (brain-computer interface) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) technologies have advanced significantly over the last several decades. Recent efforts have involved the integration of these technologies with the goal of restoring functional movement in paralyzed patients. Implantable BCIs have provided neural recordings with increased spatial resolution and have been combined with sophisticated neural decoding algorithms and increasingly capable FES systems to advance efforts toward this goal. This chapter reviews historical developments that have occurred as the exciting fields of BCI and FES have evolved and now overlapped to allow new breakthroughs in medicine, targeting restoration of movement and lost function in users with disabilities. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) provide an important complement to other noninvasive BCIs. While fMRI has several disadvantages (being nonportable, methodologically challenging, costly, and noisy), it is the only method providing high spatial resolution whole-brain coverage of brain activation. These properties allow relating mental activities to specific brain regions and networks providing a transparent scheme for BCI users to encode information and for real-time fMRI BCI systems to decode the intents of the user. Various mental activities have been used successfully in fMRI BCIs so far that can be classified into the four categories (a) higher-order cognitive tasks (e.g., mental calculation), (b) covert language-related tasks (e.g., mental speech and mental singing), (c) imagery tasks (motor, visual, auditory, tactile, and emotion imagery), and (d) selective attention tasks (visual, auditory, and tactile attention). This direction change will profoundly open up new avenues for BCI research and clinical applications.     BCI (brain-computer interface) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) technologies have advanced significantly over the last several decades. Recent efforts have involved the integration of these technologies with the goal of restoring functional movement in paralyzed patients. Implantable BCIs have provided neural recordings with increased spatial resolution and have been combined with sophisticated neural decoding algorithms and increasingly capable FES systems to advance efforts toward this goal. This chapter reviews historical developments that have occurred as the exciting fields of BCI and FES have evolved and now overlapped to allow new breakthroughs in medicine, targeting restoration of movement and lost function in users with disabilities. © 2020 Elsevier B.V. While fMRI has several disadvantages (being nonportable, methodologically challenging, costly, and noisy), it is the only method providing high spatial resolution whole-brain coverage of brain activation. These properties allow relating mental activities to specific brain regions and networks providing a transparent scheme for BCI users to encode information and for real-time fMRI BCI systems to decode the intents of the user. Various mental activities have been used successfully in fMRI BCIs so far that can be classified into the four categories (a) higher-order cognitive tasks (e.g., mental calculation), (b) covert language-related tasks (e.g., mental speech and mental singing), (c) imagery tasks (motor, visual, auditory, tactile, and emotion imagery), and (d) selective attention tasks (visual, auditory, and tactile attention).   • BACKGROUND Lupus patients are at risk for pregnancy loss, and it has been generally accepted that women with SLE should have low disease activity prior to conception. However, there are conflicting results regarding the effect of pregnancy on SLE flares. https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ly2584702.html This study aims to identify predictors of flares during and after pregnancy in SLE patients with inactive or stable disease activity during the first trimester and to characterize and estimate the frequency of post-partum flares in these patients. METHODS SLE patients in the multicenter, prospective PROMISSE (Predictors of Pregnancy Outcome Biomarkers in Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) study were evaluated for flares during and after pregnancy using the SELENA-SLEDAI Flare Index. Flares during pregnancy were assessed in all 384 patients and post-partum flares in 234 patients with study visits 2-6 months post-partum. Logistic regression models were fit to the data to identify independent risk factors for flare. RESULTS During pregnancy, 20.8% of patients had mild/moderate flares and 6.25% had severe. Post-partum, 27.7% of patients had mild/moderate flares and 1.7% had severe. The mild flares rarely required treatment. Younger age, low C4 and higher PGA at baseline were independently associated with higher risk of having at least one mild/moderate or severe flare during pregnancy. Older patients were at decreased risk of flare, as well as those with quiescent disease at baseline. No variables evaluated at baseline or the visit most proximal to delivery was significantly associated with risk of flare post-partum. Medications were not associated with flare during or after pregnancy. CONCLUSION In patients with inactive or stable mild disease activity at the time of conception, lupus disease flares during and after pregnancy are typically mild and occur at similar rates. In this study, the clinical performance of our fetal DNA testing was investigated by analyzing the sex chromosome aneuploidy aberrations among 9985 pregnancies. The study was a retrospective analysis of collected NIPT data from the Ion S5 next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform obtained from Altamedica Medical Centre of Rome. RESULTS NIPT analysis of 9985 pregnancies revealed 31 cases with abnormal SCA results (0.31%). Among the 31 positive NIPT cases, 22 women agreed to undergo fetal karyotyping, whereas 9 refused further analyses. Of the 22 women verified by karyotyping analysis, 77.3% (17/22) were confirmed to be true positive SCAs, whereas 22.7% (5/22) were false positive. Among the true positive cases, 53.0% (9/17) were positive for monosomy X, 17.6% (3/17) were positive for 47, XXX aneuploidy, 23.

  • Finally, simulated radial distribution functions are used to explore the evolution of the molecular-scale structure with increasing pressure. Subtle changes in the short-range real-space correlations are related to a collapse of the molecular conformations with increasing pressure, while the evolution of the static structure factor shows excellent correlation with the available x-ray diffraction data. These results are of indirect relevance to oil-based lubricants, as the pressures involved are comparable to those found in engines, and hence, the ability of lubricating thin films to act as load-bearing media can be linked to the solidification phenomena studied in this work.We investigate the numerical stability of time-dependent coupled-cluster theory for many-electron dynamics in intense laser pulses, comparing two coupled-cluster formulations with full configuration interaction theory. Our numerical experiments show that orbital-adaptive time-dependent coupled-cluster doubles (OATDCCD) theory offers significantly improved stability compared with the conventional Hartree-Fock-based time-dependent coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles (TDCCSD) formulation. The improved stability stems from greatly reduced oscillations in the doubles amplitudes, which, in turn, can be traced to the dynamic biorthonormal reference determinants of OATDCCD theory. As long as these are good approximations to the Brueckner determinant, OATDCCD theory is numerically stable. The strongest collision-induced rotational HeH+ transitions are those with Δj = 1. Previous results obtained using approximate treatment are compared to the new ones, and significant differences are found. The new rate coefficients are also compared to those for electron-impact rotational excitation, and we found that collisions with H dominate the excitation of HeH+ in media where the electron fraction is less than 10-4. In this work, we investigated the phase separation of different sequences of a coarse-grained model for intrinsically disordered proteins and discovered a surprisingly rich phase behavior. We studied both the fraction of total hydrophobic parts and the distribution of hydrophobic parts. Not surprisingly, sequences with larger hydrophobic fractions showed conventional liquid-liquid phase separation. The location of the critical point was systematically influenced by the terminal beads of the sequence due to changes in interfacial composition and tension. For sequences with lower hydrophobicity, we observed not only conventional liquid-liquid phase separation but also re-entrant phase behavior in which the liquid phase density decreases at lower temperatures. For some sequences, we observed the formation of open phases consisting of aggregates, rather than a normal liquid. These aggregates had overall lower densities than the conventional liquid phases and exhibited complex geometries with large interconnected string-like or membrane-like clusters. Our findings suggest that minor alterations in the ordering of residues may lead to large changes in the phase behavior of the protein, a fact of significant potential relevance for biology.A quantitative understanding of the evaporative drying kinetics and nucleation rates of aqueous based aerosol droplets is important for a wide range of applications, from atmospheric aerosols to industrial processes such as spray drying. Here, we introduce a numerical model for interpreting measurements of the evaporation rate and phase change of drying free droplets made using a single particle approach. We explore the evaporation of aqueous sodium chloride and sodium nitrate solution droplets. Although the chloride salt is observed to reproducibly crystallize at all drying rates, the nitrate salt solution can lose virtually all of its water content without crystallizing. The latter phenomenon has implications for our understanding of the competition between the drying rate and nucleation kinetics in these two systems. The nucleation model is used in combination with the measurements of crystallization events to infer nucleation rates at varying equilibrium state points, showing that classical nucleation theory provides a good description of the crystallization of the chloride salt but not the nitrate salt solution droplets.

These results are of indirect relevance to oil-based lubricants, as the pressures involved are comparable to those found in engines, and hence, the ability of lubricating thin films to act as load-bearing media can be linked to the solidification phenomena studied in this work.We investigate the numerical stability of time-dependent coupled-cluster theory for many-electron dynamics in intense laser pulses, comparing two coupled-cluster formulations with full configuration interaction theory. Our numerical experiments show that orbital-adaptive time-dependent coupled-cluster doubles (OATDCCD) theory offers significantly improved stability compared with the conventional Hartree-Fock-based time-dependent coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles (TDCCSD) formulation. The improved stability stems from greatly reduced oscillations in the doubles amplitudes, which, in turn, can be traced to the dynamic biorthonormal reference determinants of OATDCCD theory. As long as these are good approximations to the Brueckner determinant, OATDCCD theory is numerically stable. We propose the reference weight as a diagnostic quantity to identify situations where the TDCCSD and OATDCCD theories become unstable.We present the application of the spherically averaged continuum model to the evaluation of molecular photoelectron and resonant Auger electron spectra. The strongest collision-induced rotational HeH+ transitions are those with Δj = 1. Previous results obtained using approximate treatment are compared to the new ones, and significant differences are found. The new rate coefficients are also compared to those for electron-impact rotational excitation, and we found that collisions with H dominate the excitation of HeH+ in media where the electron fraction is less than 10-4. The composition of the islands themselves also changes during growth.Phase separation of intrinsically disordered proteins is important for the formation of membraneless organelles or biomolecular condensates, which play key roles in the regulation of biochemical processes within cells. In this work, we investigated the phase separation of different sequences of a coarse-grained model for intrinsically disordered proteins and discovered a surprisingly rich phase behavior. We studied both the fraction of total hydrophobic parts and the distribution of hydrophobic parts. Not surprisingly, sequences with larger hydrophobic fractions showed conventional liquid-liquid phase separation. The location of the critical point was systematically influenced by the terminal beads of the sequence due to changes in interfacial composition and tension. For sequences with lower hydrophobicity, we observed not only conventional liquid-liquid phase separation but also re-entrant phase behavior in which the liquid phase density decreases at lower temperatures. For some sequences, we observed the formation of open phases consisting of aggregates, rather than a normal liquid. These aggregates had overall lower densities than the conventional liquid phases and exhibited complex geometries with large interconnected string-like or membrane-like clusters. Our findings suggest that minor alterations in the ordering of residues may lead to large changes in the phase behavior of the protein, a fact of significant potential relevance for biology.A quantitative understanding of the evaporative drying kinetics and nucleation rates of aqueous based aerosol droplets is important for a wide range of applications, from atmospheric aerosols to industrial processes such as spray drying. Here, we introduce a numerical model for interpreting measurements of the evaporation rate and phase change of drying free droplets made using a single particle approach. We explore the evaporation of aqueous sodium chloride and sodium nitrate solution droplets. Although the chloride salt is observed to reproducibly crystallize at all drying rates, the nitrate salt solution can lose virtually all of its water content without crystallizing. The latter phenomenon has implications for our understanding of the competition between the drying rate and nucleation kinetics in these two systems. The nucleation model is used in combination with the measurements of crystallization events to infer nucleation rates at varying equilibrium state points, showing that classical nucleation theory provides a good description of the crystallization of the chloride salt but not the nitrate salt solution droplets.

  • BACKGROUND Online self-management education programmes are now recommended for people with type 2 diabetes to improve self-management capacities. There is limited evidence to determine whether such programmes improve the health outcomes for midlife adults with diabetes. AIMS The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the impact of online self-management interventions with digital consulting on glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), total cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes distress, self-efficacy, and depression in midlife adults. A narrative synthesis was conducted for all secondary outcomes. No conclusions could be drawn on the impact of these outcomes. CONCLUSION Online interventions improve HbA1c. In comparison with the same period the preceding year, the introduction of the oral care kit and assessment tool improved compliance with oral care by more than 4 times; the overall costs of antibiotics to treat NV-HAP patients fell by 79%, with the number of doses falling by 70%, and the mortality rate decreased from 27% to 20%. According to a survey of multidisciplinary team (MDT) members keeping oral care tools available at the point of use saved time, and the oral health of patients on the unit improved after the introduction of the oral care kit and assessment tool. FiRES was tested against two hand curated databases of protein repeats MALIDUP, for very divergent duplicated domains; and RepeatsDB for short tandem repeats. The performance of FiRES was compared to that of lalign, RADAR, HHrepID, CE-symm, ReUPred, and Swelfe. FiRES was the method that most accurately detected proteins either with duplicated domains (accuracy = 0.86) or with multiple repeated units (accuracy = 0.92). Their association with PD-L1 expression and vascular formation was further explored. METHOD Using a database of 387 patients who underwent hepatic resection for HCC, immunohistochemical staining of PD-L1, CD8, and CD34 was performed. Additionally, we undertook an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for soluble PD-L1 (sPD-L1). RESULTS Compared with PD-L1-negative HCC patients (n=311), PD-L1-positive HCC patients (n=76) showed significantly worse overall survival (multivariate HR, 2.502; 95% CI, 1.716-3.649; P less then 0.0001). The presence of tumor-infiltrating CD8-positive T cells was significantly correlated with longer overall survival (multivariate HR, 0.383; 95% CI, 0.274-0.537; P less then 0.0001). Stratification based on PD-L1 expression in cancer cells and tumor-infiltrating CD8-positive T cell status was also significantly associated with overall survival (log rank, P less then 0.0001). HCC with PD-L1-positive expression was significantly correlated with positivity for vessels that encapsulated tumor clusters. Serum PD-L1 levels was significantly higher in PD-L1 positive group than in PD-L1 negative group (p=0.0158). CONCLUSIONS Our large cohort study showed that PD-L1 expression in cancer cells was associated with a poor clinical outcome and vascular formation in HCC patients. All rights reserved.The aim of the present study was to elucidate the pharmacokinetic profiles of amoxicillin trihydrate (AMX) in Siamese freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis). Crocodiles were administered a single intramuscular injection of AMX, at a dose of either 5 or 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). Blood samples were collected at preassigned times up to 120 hr. The plasma concentrations of AMX were measured using a validated liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry method. AMX plasma concentrations were quantifiable for up to 72 hr (5 mg/kg b.w.) and 96 hr (10 mg/kg b.w.). The elimination half-life (t1/2λ z ) of AMX following dosing at 5 mg/kg b.w. (8.72 ± 0.61 hr) was almost identical to that following administration at 10 mg/kg b.w (8.98 ± 1.13 hr). The maximum concentration and area under the curve from zero to the last values of AMX increased in a dose-dependent fashion. The average binding percentage of AMX to plasma protein was 21.24%. Based on the pharmacokinetic data, susceptibility break point, and the surrogate PK-PD index (T > MIC, 0.25 μg/ml), intramuscular administration of AMX at dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. every 4 days might be appropriate for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in freshwater crocodiles. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.BACKGROUND Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with emotional problems, and their co-occurrence often leads to worse outcomes. We investigated the developmental associations between ADHD and emotional problems from childhood to early adolescence and examined the genetic and environmental contributions to their developmental link. We further tested whether this developmental association remained across the transition to young adulthood. METHODS We used data from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study, a cohort of 2,232 British twins. In childhood, ADHD and emotional problems were assessed at ages 5, 7, 10 and 12 with mothers' and teachers' reports. At age 18, we used self-reported symptoms according to DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, and DSM-IV for anxiety and depression. RESULTS Longitudinal analyses showed that earlier ADHD was associated with later emotional problems consistently across childhood. However, earlier emotional problems were not associated with later ADHD symptoms. The developmental association between ADHD and later emotional problems in childhood was entirely explained by common genetic factors. Consistent with results in childhood, earlier symptoms of ADHD were associated with later emotional problems during the transition to young adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that ADHD symptoms are predictors of the development of emotional problems, from childhood up to young adulthood, through shared genetic influences. All rights reserved.The aim of the present study was to elucidate the pharmacokinetic profiles of amoxicillin trihydrate (AMX) in Siamese freshwater crocodiles (Crocodylus siamensis). Crocodiles were administered a single intramuscular injection of AMX, at a dose of either 5 or 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). Blood samples were collected at preassigned times up to 120 hr. The plasma concentrations of AMX were measured using a validated liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry method. AMX plasma concentrations were quantifiable for up to 72 hr (5 mg/kg b.w.) and 96 hr (10 mg/kg b.w.). The elimination half-life (t1/2λ z ) of AMX following dosing at 5 mg/kg b.w. (8.72 ± 0.61 hr) was almost identical to that following administration at 10 mg/kg b.w (8.98 ± 1.13 hr). The maximum concentration and area under the curve from zero to the last values of AMX increased in a dose-dependent fashion. The average binding percentage of AMX to plasma protein was 21.24%. Based on the pharmacokinetic data, susceptibility break point, and the surrogate PK-PD index (T > MIC, 0.25 μg/ml), intramuscular administration of AMX at dose of 5 mg/kg b.w. every 4 days might be appropriate for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in freshwater crocodiles. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.BACKGROUND Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with emotional problems, and their co-occurrence often leads to worse outcomes. We investigated the developmental associations between ADHD and emotional problems from childhood to early adolescence and examined the genetic and environmental contributions to their developmental link. We further tested whether this developmental association remained across the transition to young adulthood. METHODS We used data from the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study, a cohort of 2,232 British twins. In childhood, ADHD and emotional problems were assessed at ages 5, 7, 10 and 12 with mothers' and teachers' reports. At age 18, we used self-reported symptoms according to DSM-5 criteria for ADHD, and DSM-IV for anxiety and depression. RESULTS Longitudinal analyses showed that earlier ADHD was associated with later emotional problems consistently across childhood. However, earlier emotional problems were not associated with later ADHD symptoms. The developmental association between ADHD and later emotional problems in childhood was entirely explained by common genetic factors. Consistent with results in childhood, earlier symptoms of ADHD were associated with later emotional problems during the transition to young adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrate that ADHD symptoms are predictors of the development of emotional problems, from childhood up to young adulthood, through shared genetic influences.
