ith COVID-19.Although various governmental entities in the USA are required to consider environmental justice (EJ) impacts of their actions during decision-making, socially vulnerable groups continue to be disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards. Tools and programs to quantify and mitigate environmental injustices are limited by existing data, which may not capture the full range of health disparities exacerbated by the complex interactions between environmental exposures and social stressors. In this study, we analyzed how the scientific literature approaches EJ issues in the USA. We searched PubMed for journal articles discussing at least one sociodemographic or environmental variable in the context of cumulative impacts and analyzed the relative frequency with which various EJ topics were studied. Our findings indicate that demographic variables are commonly used in epidemiologic studies, though some areas (e.g., age) are better studied than others. Similarly, occupational exposure and ambient air pollution were more studied than other types of exposures. Word frequency analyses revealed which toxicants and health outcomes are the most frequently studied. In addition, temporality analyses showed that the rate of occupational publications rose rapidly in the 1970-1980s and has since plateaued, while other publication rates increased two decades later and are still on the rise. Cumulative impacts are considered in a relatively small portion of journal articles across all topics; nevertheless, they have seen an exponential climb in the last decade. A more equitable distribution of scientific efforts might be needed for a better distribution of funding, policy-making efforts, and other resources to socially and environmentally vulnerable communities.This paper examines the biological, psychosocial, cultural, and obesogenic environmental factors that might account for the high prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among African American young children (aged 2-11) and adolescents (aged 12-19). Research findings are discussed on the practices associated with the development of childhood obesity including maternal overweight and obesity, physiological predisposition, infant feeding practices, breastfeeding, rapid infant weight gain, sleep disruption, low nutrition diets, physical inactivity, and sedentary behavior. The psychological correlates of overweight and obesity are discussed. Consistent with the obesogenic arguments, this paper examines the development of childhood obesity as a function of socioeconomic disadvantages, social inequities, urban environmental contingencies, and media food product messages. The potential deleterious health consequences of overweight and obesity are discussed. There is an examination of the structural-level and individual-level prevention/intervention strategies necessary for sustainable declines in childhood overweight and obesity.Humans can follow different social learning strategies, sometimes oriented toward the models' characteristics (i.e., who-strategies). These findings open avenues for the study of the cognitive bases of human technological culture.Two prominent theoretical frameworks in moral psychology, Moral Foundations and Dual Process Theory, share a broad foundational assumption that individual differences in human morality are dispositional and in part due to genetic variation. The only published direct test of heritability, however, found little evidence of genetic influences on moral judgments using instrumentation approaches associated with Moral Foundations Theory. This raised questions about one of the core assumptions underpinning intuitionist theories of moral psychology. Here we examine the heritability of moral psychology using the moral dilemmas approach commonly used in Dual Process Theory research. Using such measures, we find consistent and significant evidence of heritability. These findings have important implications not only for understanding which measures do, or do not, tap into the genetically influenced aspects of moral decision-making, but in better establishing the utility and validity of different intuitionist theoretical frameworks and the source of why people differ in those frameworks.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the respiratory function and symptom perception in professional cyclists completing a Grand Tour (GT).
Nine male cyclists completed La Vuelta or Tour de France (2018/19). At study entry, airway inflammation was measured via fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). Respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function were assessed prior to the first stage (Pre-GT), at the second rest day (Mid-GT) and prior to the final stage of the GT (Late-GT). Sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP) was assessed at pre and late-GT timepoints.
Seven cyclists reported respiratory symptoms during the race (with a prominence of upper airway issues). Symptom severity increased either mid or late-GT for most cyclists. A decline in FEV
from pre-to-mid GT (-0.27 ± 0.24l, -5.7%) (P = 0.02) and pre-to-late GT (-0.27 ± 0.13l, -5.7%) (P < 0.001) was observed. Similarly, a decline in FVC (-0.22 ± 0.17l, -3.7%) (P = 0.01) and FEF
(-0.49 ± 0.34l/s, -11%) (P = 0.02) was observed pre-to-late GT. Overall, eight (89%) and six (67%) demonstrated a clinically meaningful decline (> 200ml) in FEV

This one-group nonexperimental pretest/posttest repeated-measures design plus interpretative phenomenological analysis explored nurse practitioner students' perceptions of dementia using virtual simulation. Perceptions of dementia and its associated challenges differed after the simulation. A critical theme that emerged was "developing empathic understanding"; the two subthemes were "mirroring dementia behaviors" and "provoking emotions." Virtual dementia simulation is an inexpensive, low-fidelity strategy to challenge assumptions and preconceived belief systems about dementia. Person-in-context experiential learning is valuable in nurse practitioner education for facilitating empathic understanding. Further research is needed to explore the correlation between empathic understanding and altruistic helping behaviors in professional practice.

This article describes the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a partnership between a health care facility and an associate of applied science nursing degree program to aid with registered nurse retention and quality patient care.
Research illustrates a clear gap between academic and practice facilities concerning new graduate nurses. Nursing programs are charged with training nursing graduates who can provide safe, quality patient care. One way to enhance the quality of patient care and aid with retention of new graduate nurses in health care facilities is through academic-practice partnerships. J Strength Cond Res 35(4) 902-909, 2021-This study aimed to compare mechanical properties and performance during sprinting, as well as thigh muscle volumes (MVs), between national-level sprinters and physically active males. In addition, the relationships between thigh MVs and sprint mechanical properties and performance were investigated. Seven male sprinters and 9 actives performed maximal-effort 40-m sprints. Instantaneous velocity was measured by radar to obtain theoretical maximum force (F0), the theoretical maximum velocity (V0), and the maximum power (Pmax). For MV assessment, series of cross-sectional images of each subject's thigh were obtained by magnetic resonance imaging for each of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and the adductor muscle group. Sprinters were faster over 10 m (7%, effect size [ES] = 2.12, p < 0.01) and 5), and hamstrings (32%, ES = 2.11, p less then 0.01) MVs than actives. Hamstrings MV correlated strongly with 40-m sprint time (r = -0.670, p less then 0.01) and V0 (r = 0.757, p less then 0.01), and moderately with Pmax (r = 0.559, p less then 0.05). Sprinters were significantly faster and had greater V0 and Pmax than active males. Larger MVs were found in sprinters' thighs, especially in the hamstring musculature, and strong correlations were found between hamstring MV and sprint mechanical properties and sprint performance.

This research is a part of the CRO-PALS study conducted in a representative sample of adolescents and analyses for this study are based on nonathletic (n = 364) and athletic (n = 192) subgroups of the cohort (16-17 years). Sex, age, body mass index (BMI), body fatness, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), training hours per week, Functional Movement Screen (FMS), and socioeconomic status were assessed at baseline. A year later, data on injury occurrence were collected. The optimal cut-point of the total FMS score for predicting injury was calculated using receiver operating characteristic curve. These predictors were included in ML analyses with calach subgroup did not successfully discriminate those who suffered from those who did not suffer from injury, and, therefore, our research does not support FMS as an injury prediction tool.

The nonradiative dynamics of excited states in Si75H64 and Cd33Se33 nanocrystals is studied at the MB (TD-DFT) and single-particle (SP) levels to reveal the role of MB effects. We find that a MB description of the excited states qualitatively changes the structure of coupling between the excited states, leading to larger nonadiabatic couplings and accelerating the dynamics by a factor of 2-4. Analyses from differential scanning calorimetry, laser confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction showed that debranching promoted the formation of starch-LA and starch-LA-βLG complexes, as characterized by the increased enthalpy changes and crystallinity and decreased full width at half maximum of the band at 480 cm-1. Debranching treatment for 6 and 18 h promoted complexation between starch and LA, while extensive debranching was unfavorable for the formation of starch-LA complexes. Similar results were also observed for the starch-LA-βLG complexes. Starch-LA-βLG complexes had more type II and less type I crystallites than starch-LA complexes. From this study, we conclude that debranching of starch favors the formation of starch-LA and starch-LA-βLG complexes, with more type II crystallites formed in starch-LA-βLG complexes.In the present study, we have examined hydride affinities relevant to a range of group 13 and group 14 reductants. The nonradiative dynamics of excited states in Si75H64 and Cd33Se33 nanocrystals is studied at the MB (TD-DFT) and single-particle (SP) levels to reveal the role of MB effects. We find that a MB description of the excited states qualitatively changes the structure of coupling between the excited states, leading to larger nonadiabatic couplings and accelerating the dynamics by a factor of 2-4. Across both species, we found bacterial killing ability to be directly related to corticosterone (CORT) and temperature and greater overall in the spring compared to the fall. We found CORT and testosterone yielded relationships with individual sex, sampling temperature, and time of year. Wild populations can exhibit high amounts of variation in commonly collected physiological endpoints, highlighting the complexity and difficulty inherent in interpreting single endpoints without taking ecological and environmental conditions into account. Saliva gepotidacin concentrations displayed a linear relationship with plasma concentrations (R2 = 0.76). Inspired by this phenomenon, researchers have developed a range of different approaches to create artificial organelles compartments with catalytic activity that add new function to living cells. In this review we will discuss three complementary lines of investigation. First, orthogonal chemistry approaches are discussed, which are based on the incorporation of catalytically active transition metal-containing nanoparticles in living cells. The second approach involves the use of premade hybrid nanoreactors, which show transient function when taken up by living cells. The third approach utilizes mostly genetic engineering methods to create bio-based structures that can be ultimately integrated with the cell's genome to make them constitutively active. The current state of the art and the scope and limitations of the field will be highlighted with selected examples from the three approaches.
The Cohort Hip and Cohort Knee (CHECK) is a cohort of middle-aged individuals with hip or knee pain. Radiographs were assigned Kellgren & Lawrence (KL) scores under different conditions at each follow-up visit for 10 years. We aimed to describe and consolidate each scoring approach, then illustrate implications of their use by comparing baseline KL scores assigned using two of these approaches, and evaluating their respective associations with joint replacement and incident radiographic osteoarthritis (ROA).
We compared baseline KL scores assigned to hips and knees using two scoring approaches (i) assigned by senior researchers to baseline images alone, and (ii) assigned by trained readers, read paired and in known sequence with up to 10 years of follow-up radiographs (Poisson regression). We evaluated the associations of baseline ROA (any ≥ KL1, established ≥ KL2) with joint replacement, and of KL1 joints with incident established ROA (survival analysis).
Of 1002 participants (79% women, mean (SD) age 55.9 (5.2) years, BMI 26.2 (4.0) kg/m
), the second scoring approach had 2.4 (95% CI 1.8-3.1, knees) and 2.9 (2.3-3.7, hips) times higher prevalence of established ROA than the first approach. Established hip ROA had higher risk of joint replacement using the first approach (Hazard Ratio, HR 24.2 (95%CI 15.0-39.8) vs. 7.7 (4.9-12.1), second approach), as did knees (19.3 (10.3-36.1) vs. 4.8 (2.4-9.6)). Risk of incident ROA did not differ by approach.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is often used for patient setup based solely on bony anatomy. The goal of this work was to evaluate whether CBCT dose can be lowered to the level of kV image pair doses when used for bony anatomy-based IGRT without compromising positioning accuracy.
An anthropomorphic phantom was CT scanned in the head, head and neck, chest, and pelvis regions and setup on the linear accelerator couch with the isocenter near the planned location. Cone beam computed tomographies were performed with the standard "full dose" protocol supplied by the linac vendor. With sequentially lowering the dose, three-dimensional (3D) matching was performed for each without shifting the couch. The standard kV image pair protocol for each site was also used to image the phantoms. For all studies, six degrees of freedom was included in the 2D or 3D matching to the extent they could be employed. Imaging doses were determined in air at isocenter following the TG-61 formalism.

The objective of this study is to evaluate associations between webcam use in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with parental stress and nursing work-related stress and burnout.
Prospective validated and de novo questionnaires administered to NICU parents and nurses during two observation periods (1) no webcam access (off webcam) and (2) webcam access (on webcam).
Seventy-nine "off webcam" parents, 80 "on webcam" parents, and 35 nurses were included. Parental stress levels were significantly lower "on webcam" and perceptions of the technology were overwhelmingly positive. There were no significant differences in nursing stress levels and burnout between periods. Only 14% of nurses believed that webcam use improves infant's quality of care. Majority nurses felt that webcams increase parental and nursing stress.

This is minimally investigated in community-based samples of developing nations like India. This study is aimed to specifically investigate the exposure-outcome associations between LBP and burden of disability (Modified Oswestry questionnaire (MODQ)), psychological morbidities (Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21)), and HRQoL (Short Form -12 version 2 (SF12V2). A Cross-sectional study using a community-based sample of LBP positive population was conducted. The range of treatment options sought was also collected. Chi-square tests and independent t-test were used to analyze the data. Of 1531 recruited participants, 871(57%) were identified as LBP positive of whom 60% were females. Mean (SD) of age and pain intensity of LBP patients was 33 (11) years and numeric rating scale4.2 (2.6) respectively. Two-third reported minimal/moderate disability. Mean (SD) scores of depression 11.87 (4.05), anxiety (8.32), stress 13.7 (5.98), physical and mental summary scores of SF-12v2 were 47.9 (7.4) and 42.2 (10.4). A multitude of remedial options was sought for the ailment. LBP causes significant disability and psychological morbidity among affected population. In this study, the evaluation index system of emergency capacity on rain-flood disaster was built from the economic-social and environmental-natural aspects, and spatial auto-correlation analysis was used to analyze spatial differentiation characteristics of the emergency capacity. Then, the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) was used to analyze the influence mechanism of the development level of economic-social factors (ESF) subsystem, environmental-natural factors (ENF) subsystem and the coupling level of these two subsystems on the emergency capacity of rain-flood disaster in provinces. The findings show that the emergency capacity distribution of rain-flood disaster in the YREB presented a "decreasing" spatial pattern of eastern, central and western regions. The development of two subsystems has produced spatial spillover effect and diffusion effect on the neighboring areas. There was a high coupling degree between these two subsystems in the YREB. Although spillover effect existed in space, the spillover did not depend on economic distance.
The limited treatment options for children with severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection highlights the need for a comprehensive understanding of the host cellular response during infection. We aimed to identify host genes that are associated with severe RSV disease and to identify drugs that can be repurposed for the treatment of severe RSV infection.

Prospective validated and de novo questionnaires administered to NICU parents and nurses during two observation periods (1) no webcam access (off webcam) and (2) webcam access (on webcam). Seventy-nine "off webcam" parents, 80 "on webcam" parents, and 35 nurses were included. Parental stress levels were significantly lower "on webcam" and perceptions of the technology were overwhelmingly positive. There were no significant differences in nursing stress levels and burnout between periods. Only 14% of nurses believed that webcam use improves infant's quality of care. Majority nurses felt that webcams increase parental and nursing stress. A Cross-sectional study using a community-based sample of LBP positive population was conducted. The range of treatment options sought was also collected. Chi-square tests and independent t-test were used to analyze the data. Of 1531 recruited participants, 871(57%) were identified as LBP positive of whom 60% were females. The results from this study indicate that all 11 WSD functions identified through this study play a vital role in improving worker safety and health and that approximately two out of three workers are open to sharing the physiological and environmental information captured using these WSDs with their management. However, functions for detecting workers' proximity to workplace hazards, specifically energized electrical materials, toxic gas, and fire/smoke, were the most critical functions that had mutual value to workers and management. Each isolate was tested to investigate its antimicrobial resistance and to detect virulence factor genes by PCR. Eighteen Salmonella strains (6.27%) were isolated. This study proposes a comprehensive approach to the surgical treatment of aging upper eyelids.
Data of 116 patients with aging upper eyelids were analyzed. Each eye was scored on upper eyelid laxity, degree of blepharoptosis, and upper eyelid socket depression at preoperation and 6months after surgery. Based on average scores of both eyes, three degrees of aging were considered mild, moderate, and severe. All patients underwent comprehensive surgical treatments. Depending on its condition, loose skin was appropriately removed, and the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) was corrected in patients with degenerative ptosis. Meanwhile orbital septum fat was released or periumbilical fat mass was used as a filler to correct upper eyelid socket depression. This retrospective study was carried out on 53 patients who underwent open technique rhinoplasty due to crooked nose. Pictures were taken from five different angles using digital cameras and recorded pre- and postoperatively. Patients who have a minimum follow-up period of 12 months are included in the study.
Fifty-three patients who have I-shaped and C-shaped crooked nose were enrolled in this study. The mean ages were 27.4 years. The mean follow-up period of the patients was 19.1 months. Patients who have I-shaped and C-shaped crooked nose deviation angle values were calculated preoperatively as 7.1 ± 2.1 and 163.4 ± 3.6, respectively. Postoperatively, deviation angle values were 0.75 ± 0.83 and 177.9 ± 3.1. Postoperative deviation angles were significantly lower than preoperative angles on patients who have I-shaped crooked noses (p < 0.001). On patients who have C-shaped crooked nose, postoperative deviation angles were significantly higher than preoperative angles (p < 0.001).
This unique study shows that the combined use of one-sided spreader flap and asymmetric spreader grafts is a very good choice for satisfactory long-term outcome and durable correction of crooked nose deformity.

Governments are attempting to restrict the incidence of medication diversion by establishing laws to curb drug access from human healthcare providers. Veterinarians, who also prescribe controlled substances and see hundreds of millions of patients annually in the USA, are often overlooked as a source of prescription drug misuse.
Evidence suggests that drug misuse occurs in the veterinary setting, and veterinarians acknowledge this as a common problem. Although analgesics are alleged to be the most common drug class diverted, a recent cross-sectional study suggests veterinarian opioid prescribing rate continues to increase. Prescription misuse in veterinarian settings is likely underestimated and needs to be better investigated. To investigate the possible role of physical activity (PA) on sleep disturbance in breast cancer patients.
Literature in PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was systematically searched until January 30, 2020. Randomized controlled trials that focused on the role of PA interventions on sleep disturbance were selected. The main outcome measures included the global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score and PSQI subscales. Subgroup analysis was performed based on the study area and intervention time. The stability and authenticity of the results were measured by sensitivity analysis and publication bias analysis, respectively.
Six articles were included in this meta-analysis. There were no significant differences in global PSQI scores between the PA intervention group and the usual care group (P = 0.057). As for PSQI subscales, PA intervention could improve sleep quality (weighted mean difference = 0.22; 95% confidence interval 0.04-0.40; P = 0.018). There were no significant differences in sleep duration, sleep medication, sleep latency, habitual sleep efficiency, and daytime dysfunction between the two groups (all P > 0.05).

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is challenging for oncologists. Many publications mention the high incidence of CIPN and the lack of effective preventive/management strategies and robust diagnostic tools. This cross-sectional study was aimed at assessing the practice of French oncologists for CIPN prevention, diagnosis and management.
This web-based survey was sent to French oncologists by the regional cancer networks. Incidence and impact of CIPN were assessed using visual analogue scales (VAS) and diagnostic strategies were recorded. Also recorded were the drugs used to prevent or manage CIPN and their perceived efficacy and safety (VAS).
Among the 210 oncologists included, the perceived incidence of CIPN was about 36.2 ± 22.1% of patients. About 99.5% of oncologists declared that they assess CIPN during medical follow-up. The use of drugs to prevent CIPN was reported by 9.6% of oncologists (group B vitamins (35.0%) and calcium and magnesium infusion (25.0%)). This study aimed to report a case of malignancy in a series of 17 autonomous thyroid nodules in children/adolescents.
We performed a retrospective analysis of patients with thyroid nodules between 2003 and 2018 who had the following characteristics (i) low serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH); (ii) nodule(s) > 1 cm on ultrasonography; (iii) homogenous uptake on scintigraphy with radioiodine in the area corresponding to the nodule(s); (iv) suppression of the remaining parenchyma; and (v) age ≤ 18 years. The approach of the institution was to perform fine-needle aspiration in all children/adolescents with autonomous thyroid nodules, as well as surgery in all patients of this age group with toxic nodular disease.
Thirteen patients, 11 girls and 2 boys aged 9-18 years, had 17 autonomous nodules ranging in size from 1.4 to 5.5 cm. Cytology was benign in 11 nodules (64.7%) and histology confirmed the benign nature in all of them. Two nodules (11.7%) had non-diagnostic cytology and were also benign. Cytology was indeterminate in three other nodules (17.6%), with two adenomas and one follicular tumour of uncertain malignant potential. Finally, cytology was suspicious for malignancy in only one nodule (5.9%) for which the infiltrative follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma was confirmed. The patient was a 13-year-old girl whose nodule exhibited highly suspicious ultrasonography features.

This study involved an elite club in Europe and was conducted over 12 seasons. The last 2 seasons were the intervention period, and the others were the control seasons. During the intervention period, players performed a complex program organized into different interventions throughout the week having as a priority the player health. Hamstring injuries, absenteeism, injury rates, and injury burden between the control and intervention seasons were compared using a rate ratio (RR) with 95% CI. Players had a mean exposure of 333.5 ± 18.6 hours per season with no significant differences between the intervention and control seasons. The overall injury rate was 3 times lower during the two intervention seasons than during the previous seasons (P less then .01); the match injury rate was 2.7 times lower (P less then .01) and the training rate 4.3 times (P less then .01). Injury burden was almost 4 times lower during the two intervention seasons than during the previous seasons (P less then .01), and recurrences in the control group were 10% vs 0% in the intervention group. Hamstring injuries were reduced ~3 times during the seasons in which elite football players were exposed to multicomponent, complex prevention training with individual approaches based on player needs, management of training load, individualized physiotherapy treatment, and planned staff communication, in comparison to the control seasons without a clearly defined and structured injury prevention intervention.
Gait disturbance is an early, disabling feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) that is typically refractory to dopaminergic medication. The cortical cholinergic system, originating in the nucleus basalis of Meynert of the basal forebrain, has been implicated. However, it is not known if degeneration in this region relates to a worsening of disease-specific gait impairment.
To evaluate associations between sub-regional cholinergic basal forebrain volumes and longitudinal progression of gait impairment in PD.
99 PD participants and 47 control participants completed gait assessments via an instrumented walkway during 2 minutes of continuous walking, at baseline and for up to 3 years, from which 16 spatiotemporal characteristics were derived. Sub-regional cholinergic basal forebrain volumes were measured at baseline via MRI and a regional map derived from post-mortem histology. Univariate analyses evaluated cross-sectional associations between sub-regional volumes and gait. Linear mixed-effects models assessedergic system predicts longitudinal progression of gait impairments in PD. Measures of this degeneration may therefore provide a novel biomarker for identifying future mobility loss and falls. © 2020 The Authors. Fifty-five formal caregivers working in the three units of a nursing home were allocated to either a control (n=27) or an intervention group (n=28). A knowledge and attitudes questionnaire about oral health was developed and completed by the caregivers. Then, an education program about oral heath in older people was applied to the intervention group, and the completion of the questionnaire was repeated by both the intervention and control groups. Two months after the intervention, the questionnaire was completed again by the intervention group. Within groups analyses revealed a statistically significant increase in knowledge and attitudes only in the intervention group after the implementation of the education program (P<.001). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/ipilimumab.html Between-group analyses showed that the total knowledge and attitudes score in the intervention group were statistically significantly higher than in the control group (P<.001 and P=.02, respectively). The study included a cohort of consecutive pregnant patients who underwent spinal surgery at five high-volume neurosurgical centers between 2010 and 2017. Perioperative and perinatal clinical data were derived from medical records.
Twenty-four pregnant patients were included. Three underwent a preoperative cesarean section. Twenty-one patients underwent surgery during pregnancy. Median maternal age was 33years, and median gestational age was 13 completed weeks. Indications were lumbar disk prolapse (n = 14; including cauda equina, severe motor deficits or acute pain), unstable spine injuries (n = 4); intramedullary tumor with paraparesis (n = 1), infection (n = 1) and Schwann cell nerve root tumor presenting with high-grade paresis (n = 1). Two patients suffered transient gestational diabetes and 1 patient presented with vaginal bleeding without any signs of fetal complications. No miscarriages, stillbirths, or severe obstetric complications occurred until delivery. All patients improved neurologically after the surgery.

The goal of administering preoperative systemic prophylactic antibiotics is to have the concentration in the tissues at its optimum level at the start and throughout the surgery. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim to clinically evaluate the serum and tissue concentration of single-dose prophylactic ceftriaxone during an ongoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and to find out risk factors for post operative surgical site infections (SSI).
It was an open labelled prospective study in 50 consecutive patients who underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under prophylactic cover of ceftriaxone. Serum and tissue concentration were estimated by HighPerformanceLiquidChromatography during the ongoing surgery. Subjects were observed for any post-operative complications including SSI.
Serum and tissue concentrations of ceftriaxone were significant at test value of 4milligrams/Litre. Body mass index was significantly correlated with the tissue concentration of ceftriaxone at the time of incision. The rate of SSI was 2%. It significantly correlated with age more than 60years, diabetes and infected bile.
A single prophylactic intra-venous dose of 1g ceftriaxone immediately prior to skin incision in LC is good enough for prevention of SSI in Indian patients.

Medical education has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries, with face-to-face lectures replaced by pre-recorded videos. However, surgical skills training cannot be replaced easily by videos, as a high level of tutor-student interaction is required. Thus, we developed anew web-based surgical skill learning session (WSSL). This case-control study evaluates the surgical skills competency of medical students taught by the WSSL.
This case-control study compares WSSL with face-to-face tutorials. Students were assigned randomly to one of two groups according to the teaching method. Independent blinded assessment was performed by a standardized marking scheme, modified from the Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skills (OSATS) global rating scale.
We recruited 62 final-year medical students into the study, with 33 randomized to the face-to-face teaching group (control group), and 29 to the WSSL group(case group) according to their student number. The baseline demographic characteristics of the two groups were comparable.
