Everyday tasks in social settings require humans to encode neural representations of not only their own spatial location, but also the location of other individuals within an environment. At present, the vast majority of what is known about neural representations of space for self and others stems from research in rodents and other non-human animals1-3. However, it is largely unknown how the human brain represents the location of others, and how aspects of human cognition may affect these location-encoding mechanisms. This was associated with a decreased amount of bone tissue within the callus, a reduced trabecular thickness and a higher amount of fibrous tissue. Furthermore, the number of osteoclasts in pantoprazole-treated animals was significantly increased at 2 weeks and decreased at 5 weeks after fracture, indicating an acceleration of bone turnover. Western blot analysis showed a lower expression of the bone morphogenetic protein-4 (BMP-4), whereas the expression of the pro-angiogenic parameters was higher when compared to controls. All the new optical pure enantiomers [(+)-1, (-)-1, (+)-2, (-)-2] were evaluated for their cytotoxic and antioxidative activities. Compound (-)-1 exhibited weak cytotoxic activity.As the field of precision medicine progresses, treatments for patients with cancer are starting to be tailored to their molecular as well as their clinical features. The emerging cancer subtypes defined by these molecular features require that dedicated resources be used to assist the discovery of drug candidates for preclinical evaluation. Voluminous gene expression profiles of patients with cancer have been accumulated in public databases, enabling the creation of cancer-specific expression signatures. Meanwhile, large-scale gene expression profiles of cellular responses to chemical compounds have also recently became available. By matching the cancer-specific expression signature to compound-induced gene expression profiles from large drug libraries, researchers can prioritize small molecules that present high potency to reverse expression of signature genes for further experimental testing of their efficacy. This approach has proven to be an efficient and cost-effective way to identify efficacious drug candidates. However, the success of this approach requires multiscale procedures, imposing considerable challenges to many labs. To address this, we developed Open Cancer TherApeutic Discovery (OCTAD; http//octad.org ) an open workspace for virtually screening compounds targeting precise groups of patients with cancer using gene expression features. Its database includes 19,127 patient tissue samples covering more than 50 cancer types and expression profiles for 12,442 distinct compounds. The program is used to perform deep-learning-based reference tissue selection, disease gene expression signature creation, drug reversal potency scoring and in silico validation. OCTAD is available as a web portal and a standalone R package to allow experimental and computational scientists to easily navigate the tool.The mental health effects of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on postpartum women are of increasing concern among mental health practitioners. To date, only a handful of studies have explored the emotional impact of the pandemic surrounding pregnancy and none have investigated the consequence of pandemic-related social restrictions on the postpartum mood of those living among different socioeconomic status (SES). All postpartum patients appearing to the Mount Sinai Health System for their postpartum appointment between January 2, 2020 and June 30, 2020, corresponding to before and during pandemic imposed social restrictions, were screened for mood symptomatology using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Each patient's socioeconomic status (high/low) was determined by their location of clinical service. A total of 516 postpartum patients were screened. Profound understanding of healthy eating beliefs in populations with a low socioeconomic position (SEP) can benefit attempts to improve diet quality in this population, but literature on this subject is fragmented. The purpose of this scoping review was to systematically map healthy eating beliefs and the meaning of food and eating in populations with a low SEP. Systematic search of electronic databases yielded 35 relevant publications that were included in a qualitative synthesis. Populations with a low SEP perceived healthy eating as important, although they expressed various meanings of 'healthy' and 'good' eating. Lack of time and money posed perceived barriers to healthy eating, as well as social influences, and desired identities that can be expressed by specific foods. Traditions were important influences on food and eating practices. Eating behavior was perceived as one's own responsibility and desirably within one's own control. Parents expressed the role of food to regulate children's (eating) behavior. In conclusion, perceived limited control over what is eaten due to various barriers as described by populations with a low SEP, may also be viewed as competing values. Deeper understanding of reasons and thoughts underlying healthy eating beliefs and what it means to eat 'well' is largely lacking in this domain. The findings call for an in-depth exploration of the origin and construction of beliefs regarding 'healthy' and 'good' eating in populations with a low SEP.Progesterone oral dose regimens are indicated for the treatment of luteal phase deficiency and estrogen dominance. The poor aqueous solubility of progesterone leads to erratic oral absorption, resulting in suboptimal or excessive plasma levels. Developing a formulation to enhance the solubility of progesterone in the gastrointestinal tract would be beneficial to decrease drug absorption variability and increase bioavailability. The solubility of progesterone at 400 mM sulfobutyl-ether-β-cyclodextrin (SBE-β-CD) concentration was ~7000-fold greater than its intrinsic solubility, aided by the formation of SBE-β-CD-progesterone complex. The complex was characterized using differential scanning colorimeter, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy techniques. FTIR and NMR studies of the complex confirm the interaction between functional groups of SBE-β-CD and progesterone to form an inclusion complex. Molecular modeling studies demonstrated progesterone binding poses with four probable SBE-β-CD isomers and these results matched with NMR and FTIR data. The progesterone oral formulations were optimized by increasing the levels of SBE-β-CD in the formulation to prevent the displacement of progesterone from the complex by gastrointestinal contents. The oral bioavailability of progesterone in rats was increased 5-fold when administered with the optimized formulation compared to administration with progesterone API capsules. Studies demonstrated that the optimized formulation prevents precipitation of progesterone in the intestinal tract and increases progesterone oral bioavailability in rats.Myeloid cell leukemia-1 (Mcl-1), a member of the Bcl-2 anti-apoptotic family, is overexpressed in the synovial macrophages of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Small interfering RNA (siRNA) Mcl-1 can induce macrophage apoptosis in the joints and is a potential therapeutic target of RA. Nevertheless, the application of siRNA is limited owing to its instability and susceptibility to degradation in vivo. To address these shortcomings, we developed composite microspheres (MPs) loaded with hyaluronic acid (HA)-chitosan (CS) nanoparticles (NPs). First, we synthesized HA-CS/siRNA NPs (HCNPs) using ionotropic gelation process. Then, HCNPs, as an internal aqueous phase, were loaded into poly (D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) and poly (cyclohexane-1,4-diyl acetone dimethylene ketal) (PCADK) MPs using the double emulsion method. The NPs-in-MPs (NiMPs) composite system provided sustained release of NPs, protected siRNA against nuclease degradation in the serum, and could readily cross the cellular membrane. In addition, we evaluated the advantages of NiMPs in an adjuvant-induced arthritis rat model. Our experimental results demonstrate that NiMPs have greater pharmacodynamic effects than common MPs. Meanwhile, compared with HCNPs, NiMPs reduced the frequency of drug administration. Therefore, NiMPs are a promising and novel siRNA delivery vehicle for RA therapy.Fluid bed granulation (FBG) is used extensively in the pharmaceutical industry and it is known to be a complex process, because the final product quality of the FBG process is determined by a complex interplay between the process parameters, fluid dynamics, and material properties. Due to this complexity, the FBG process is inherently nonlinear and as such difficult to scale-up. The field of chemical engineering has shown that complex nonlinear processes can be assumed to be linear under limiting conditions. We leverage this idea and present a linear scale-up approach (LiSA) to the FBG process. We derive the key LiSA equation from first principles, and then use it in combination with the similarity principle for scale-up purposes. When dealing with infections of the upper skin layers, these vehicles, in spite of their low viscosity, must have a good skin persistence and also concentrate the essential oil components in the target skin layers. Given the well-known ability of alkylsiloxysilicate resins to induce a very substantive and non-occlusive film after cutaneous application in an appropriate preparation, it has been undertaken to use them to prepare a highly persistent O/W fluid emulsion of essential oil. Hence, after the successful development of a fluid silicone-in-water (Si/W) emulsion integrating a 100% trimethylsiloxysilicate resin, the essential oil was incorporated in this emulsion. The physical and chemical stabilities of the prepared emulsion were then studied in the final packaging under different storage conditions.

Bee venom is a natural toxin composed of several peptides. Massive envenoming causes severe local and systemic reactions. We report two cases of severe bee envenomation, of which one was fatal. We also describe clinical characteristics and immune markers. Both victims suffered from respiratory distress, renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, and shock. They required invasive mechanical ventilation, vasoactive drugs, and renal replacement therapy. Moreover, serum levels of chemokines, cytokines, and cell-free circulating nucleic acids demonstrated an intense inflammatory process. Massive envenoming produced systemic injury in the victims, with an uncontrolled inflammatory response, and a more significant chemotactic response in the fatal case.Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis is a skin disorder occurring in 5-10% of visceral leishmaniasis patients after treatment with miltefosine,the first-line drug for this skin disorder. We reported a case of acute anterior uveitis,a rare adverse effect, experienced by a patient treated with miltefosine for post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. This adverse effect developed after 15 days of miltefosine consumption, and the patient himself discontinued the treatment. The ophthalmic complication was completely resolved with antibiotics and steroid eye drops. After recovery from the ophthalmic complication, the patient was successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B for the skin lesions.
Aedes aegypti (L.) is the major vector of arboviruses that causes serious public health concerns in tropical and subtropical countries.
We examined the larvicidal activity of 1,2-diphenyldiselenide [(PhSe)2] and 1,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) diselenide [(p-ClPhSe)2] and determine its toxicity to different non-target organisms.
(PhSe)2 and (p-ClPhSe)2 killed Ae. aegypti L3 larvae with LC50/24h values of 65.63 µM (20.48 mg/L) and 355.19 µM (135.33 mg/L), respectively. (PhSe)2 was not toxic to the four model organisms.
(PhSe)2 is a larvicidal compound with selective action against Ae. aegypti larvae. The mechanisms of action of (PhSe)2 under field conditions remain to be investigated.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by reactivation of JC virus (JCV).
We described the profile of laboratory-confirmed PML cases among AIDS patients.
A total of 43 HIV patients with clinical conditions compatible with PML were obtained; 5 cases were confirmed by JCV testing. The main clinical finding was mental confusion. Median CD4 count was 54 cells/mm³.
Three of the five confirmed PML cases died; the time between diagnosis and death was 2, 5, and 6 months. It is important to consider JCV infection as a differential diagnosis.

Bee venom is a natural toxin composed of several peptides. Massive envenoming causes severe local and systemic reactions. We report two cases of severe bee envenomation, of which one was fatal. We also describe clinical characteristics and immune markers. Both victims suffered from respiratory distress, renal failure, rhabdomyolysis, and shock. They required invasive mechanical ventilation, vasoactive drugs, and renal replacement therapy. Moreover, serum levels of chemokines, cytokines, and cell-free circulating nucleic acids demonstrated an intense inflammatory process. Massive envenoming produced systemic injury in the victims, with an uncontrolled inflammatory response, and a more significant chemotactic response in the fatal case.Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis is a skin disorder occurring in 5-10% of visceral leishmaniasis patients after treatment with miltefosine,the first-line drug for this skin disorder. We reported a case of acute anterior uveitis,a rare adverse effect, experienced by a patient treated with miltefosine for post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. This adverse effect developed after 15 days of miltefosine consumption, and the patient himself discontinued the treatment. Chondroid syringoma (CS) represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands. Definitive diagnosis is made on histopathology and is based on the presence of characteristic epithelial and stromal components. We report a case of an atypical CS arising on the extremity of an elderly male patient. Histomorphologic features of necrosis and cellular atypia raised suspicion for malignant degeneration, an exceptionally rare circumstance in this context. To further support the diagnosis of malignancy, array comparative genomic hybridization was performed from both low and higher grade areas of the tumor. Both regions demonstrated multiple copy number gains and losses, with additional loss of q7p (TP53), loss of 19p, and loss of heterozygosity on16q demonstrated in the more atypical foci. To our knowledge, this is the first case description of malignant degeneration of a CS with correlative microarray analysis. The findings in this case may prove useful in confirming the diagnosis in future ambiguous cases.Primary dysmenorrhea (PD) is one of the most common gynecological disorders among young women. Bergamot is rich in natural bioactive ingredients, which could potentially ameliorate PD. The rats were supplemented with the three doses of bergamot products and positive drugs by gastric perfusion, respectively. The results demonstrated that bergamot products could alleviate PD with dose-dependence via inhibiting the growth of PGF2α /PGE2 ratio, accumulation of MDA, and release of iNOS, and promoting the activities of T-AOC, ***, CAT, and GSH in uterine tissues. Furthermore, bergamot products could mitigate the writhing response and histopathological alterations in uterine tissues. In addition, bergamot essential oil had greater benefits than the corresponding dose of juice and ethanol extract. We aim to elucidate this with PET imaging in 15 PD-RBD+ and 15 PD-RBD- patients, while having 15 age-matched healthy controls (HC). Each participant underwent a single PET scan with [11 C]FLB-457 to detect the D2 receptor availability within the extra-striatal regions of interest (ROI), including the prefrontal, temporal, and limbic areas. [11 C]FLB-457 retention was expressed as the nondisplaceable binding potential. Our results reveal that relative to HC, PD-RBD+ and PD-RBD- patients have lower levels of D2 receptor availability within the uncus parahippocampus, superior, lateral, and inferior temporal cortex. PD-RBD+ showed steep decline in D2 receptors within the left uncus parahippocampus with increasing disease severity, but this was not observed for PD-RBD- patients. Findings imply that extra-striatal dopaminergic system may play a role in contributing to symptomatic progress in PD patients with RBD. Using dual luciferase assay and an established cell-cultured HCV (HCVcc) system, the effect of miR-196a on HCV genome was assessed. In silico analysis demonstrated the significant role of miR-196a in the downregulation of HCV replication. Using dual luciferase assay, the liver-specific miR-196a and NS5 A gene binding was confirmed. To assess the experimental role of miR-196a, an HCVcc system was established in the Huh 7.5 cell lines. The HCV-RNA 1b derived from an infected patient was transfected into Huh 7.5 cells containing miR-196a lentiviral vectors (Huh 7.5/miR-196a), mocks (Huh 7.5/**** vector), and naïve Huh 7.5 cells. The rate of reduction of the HCV genome replication was assessed using relative real-time PCR assay. These results represent miR-196a overexpression and its roles in regulating HCV genome replication. However, miR-196a may inhibit HCV replication and accelerate the early stages of apoptosis. Overexpression of miR-196a in Huh 7.5 replicon cell is a potential new strategy to prevent hepatitis C infection. PLZF is degraded by the ubiquitin ligase CRL4CRBN in complex with thalidomide, its derivatives or 5-hydroxythalidomide in a manner dependent on the conserved first and third zinc finger domains of PLZF. Surprisingly, thalidomide and 5-hydroxythalidomide confer distinctly different substrate specificities to mouse and chicken CRBN, and both compounds cause teratogenic phenotypes in chicken embryos.

Hepatitis A is a vaccine preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. The occupational health nurse should be aware of the signs and symptoms of the virus, educate workers about the infection, and recommend immunization for workers traveling or working in high-risk areas for hepatitis A.Few routinely available biomarkers are clinically useful in assessing dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE) and aid in CE subclassification. The diagnostic potential of the blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has not been evaluated in canine CE. We evaluated the NLR in 93 dogs with CE (no steroid treatment for ≥2 wk prior) and tested for an association with clinical, clinicopathologic, and histologic characteristics and also with CE subclassification. NLR was significantly higher in CE dogs with severe clinical disease than dogs with mild clinical disease (p = 0.047). Hypoalbuminemia (p 0.05). Dogs with steroid- or other immunosuppressant-responsive (IRE) or nonresponsive enteropathy (NRE) had significantly higher NLRs (median 7.3) than dogs with food-responsive enteropathy (FRE; median 3.0; p = 0.003), and a NLR ≥5.5 best distinguished both groups of dogs. No difference in NLR was detected between dogs with IRE and dogs diagnosed with NRE. These findings suggest that leukogram changes (i.e., NLR) could be clinically useful in canine CE, and that neutrophils might play a role in the systemic inflammatory response associated with canine CE. In this investigation, we tested the efficacy of a professionally produced Run-Hide-Fight® video to accomplish such a goal with a convenience sample of college students. Drawing on Vested Interest Theory (VIT) to guide our evaluation, we observed significant gains in stake, salience, and self-efficacy for students exposed to the emergency preparedness video compared to those not exposed to the video. We find evidence not only for short-term gains immediately after message exposure but also persisting effects two weeks after exposure. In addition, greater perceptions of stake and salience in response to the video predicted more favorable attitudes toward emergency preparedness over time. These findings demonstrate the potential for brief messages shown in university classrooms to encourage students to feel vested in emergency preparedness on campus. Hepatitis A is a vaccine preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. The occupational health nurse should be aware of the signs and symptoms of the virus, educate workers about the infection, and recommend immunization for workers traveling or working in high-risk areas for hepatitis A.Few routinely available biomarkers are clinically useful in assessing dogs with chronic enteropathy (CE) and aid in CE subclassification. The diagnostic potential of the blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) has not been evaluated in canine CE. We evaluated the NLR in 93 dogs with CE (no steroid treatment for ≥2 wk prior) and tested for an association with clinical, clinicopathologic, and histologic characteristics and also with CE subclassification. NLR was significantly higher in CE dogs with severe clinical disease than dogs with mild clinical disease (p = 0.047). Hypoalbuminemia (p 0.05). Dogs with steroid- or other immunosuppressant-responsive (IRE) or nonresponsive enteropathy (NRE) had significantly higher NLRs (median 7.3) than dogs with food-responsive enteropathy (FRE; median 3.0; p = 0.003), and a NLR ≥5.5 best distinguished both groups of dogs. No difference in NLR was detected between dogs with IRE and dogs diagnosed with NRE. These findings suggest that leukogram changes (i.e., NLR) could be clinically useful in canine CE, and that neutrophils might play a role in the systemic inflammatory response associated with canine CE. In this investigation, we tested the efficacy of a professionally produced Run-Hide-Fight® video to accomplish such a goal with a convenience sample of college students. Drawing on Vested Interest Theory (VIT) to guide our evaluation, we observed significant gains in stake, salience, and self-efficacy for students exposed to the emergency preparedness video compared to those not exposed to the video. We find evidence not only for short-term gains immediately after message exposure but also persisting effects two weeks after exposure. In addition, greater perceptions of stake and salience in response to the video predicted more favorable attitudes toward emergency preparedness over time. These findings demonstrate the potential for brief messages shown in university classrooms to encourage students to feel vested in emergency preparedness on campus. We linked police arrest and clinical care data at the individual level to conduct a retrospective cohort study of all individuals arrested in 2016 in Indianapolis, Indiana. We classified arrestees into three levels 1 arrest, 2 arrests, or 3 or more arrests. We included data on clinical diagnoses between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015 and classified mental health diagnoses and substance use disorder (SUD) based on DSM categories using ICD9/10 diagnoses codes.
Of those arrested in 2016, 18,236 (79.5%) were arrested once, 3167 (13.8%) were arrested twice, and 1536 (6.7%) were arrested three or more times. In the 2 years before the arrest, nearly one-third (31.3%) of arrestees had a mental health diagnosis, and over a quarter (27.7%) of arrestees had an SUD diagnosis. Most of those with a mental health or SUD diagnosis had both (22.5% of all arrestees). Arrestees with multiple mental health (OR 2.68, 95% CI 2.23, 3.23), SUD diagnoses (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.38, 1,82), or co-occurring conditions (1.72, 95% CI 1.48, 2.01) in the preceding 2 years had higher odds of repeat arrest.
Our findings show that linked clinical and criminal justice data systems identify individuals at risk of repeat arrest and inform opportunities for interventions aimed at low-level offenders with behavioral health needs.

A total of 24 lambs, aged 6 months weighing 8.0 ± 0.5 kg were randomly allocated to one of two dietary treatments (1) CL diet-roadside grass and concentrate mixture; (2) PL diet-CL diet + 5% fresh plantain supplementation on a DM basis. The PL diet group exhibited 23% higher (P = 0.01) average daily gain and 15% improved (P = 0.03) feed conversion efficiency. Circulating cholesterol concentrations were suppressed by 9% (P = 0.03), and liver enzyme activity was improved by 5-25% (P less then 0.05) in the lamb fed PL diet, compared with CL diet only. The inclusion of plantain in the diet was highly effective at suppressing the parasites, Paramphistomum spp. (P = 0.003) and coccidial parasites (P = 0.04), but not stomach worms. Moreover, plantain supplementation increased growth hormone and insulin concentrations in plasma level, whereas decreased carcass fat by 32.7%. How should we understand Sars-CoV-2 and why does it matter? The argument we present is that the virus undermines any neat distinction between the natural and the human-made, the biological and the social. Rather, to understand the virus and the pandemic we need to understand both as intimately connected to our own social and historical condition. What started as a reflection on the nature of the virus thus turns into a reflection on the human condition as refracted in this pandemic or an anthropology of the virus.Using molecular dynamics simulations, we analyze ion separation and water purification through a piston-driven graphene/carbon-nanotube filter in the presence of an external electric field. Three different magnitudes of electric field are applied along the nanotube's axial direction with the goal of separating sodium and chloride ions in a NaCl aqueous solution. For comparison purposes, we also study the same system in zero fields. Our results show that sufficiently large values of the electric field strength greatly improve the ion separation process. At the highest field strength, the theoretical efficiency of the filter in removing salt from water exceeds 95% indicating its applicability in commercial filtration processes to produce fresh water. These results suggest that the proposed set-up can be used to design highly efficient nanostructured membranes for water desalination.A series of novel bis-triazole compounds was designed by combining high-energy functionalities (nitro and nitramino groups) as substituents with each triazole and incorporating of varying linkages into the bis-triazoles. Then, their heats of formation (HOFs), energetic properties, HOMO-LUMO, electrostatic potential, and impact sensitivity were studied theoretically to facilitate further developments. In general, all the designed compounds possess **** higher HOFs than RDX, -CH2-CH2-, -N=N-, or -NH-NH- linkages contribute to increase the HOFs, while incorporation of the bridge group -O-CH2-CH2-O- shows negative effect on HOFs. Detonation properties of most of the designed compounds can be comparable with or even better than ones of RDX, suggesting that designing the bridged bis-triazoles-based derivatives with energy-rich substituents is an efficient method to obtain potential energetic compounds. Considering the detonation performance and impact sensitivity, -NH-(I), -N=N- (V), and -NH-NH- (VI) are favorable bridged groups between energetic moieties for designing efficient energetic materials (EMs).

This article focuses on how to provide environmental descriptions of the context with the intent of creating access to information and dialogical participation for deafblind persons. Multimodal interaction is needed to communicate with deafblind persons whose combined sensory loss impedes their access to the environment and ongoing interaction. Empirical data of interpreting for deafblind persons are analyzed to give insight into how this task may be performed. All communicative activities vary due to their context, participants, and aim. In this study, our data are part of a cross-linguistic study of tactile sign language and were gathered during a guided tour for a deafblind group. The guided tour was tailored to a specific group (adult deafblind tactile signers and their interpreters) visiting one of the oldest cathedrals and pilgrim sites in Scandinavia, with interpreters following up the guide's presentation and providing descriptions based on the given situation. The tour and the interpreters' work wereblind person, and the situated frame of their interaction. The study opens for a broader understanding of the repertoire of multimodal interaction and how such interaction may be handled as inputs in communication processes. This is of relevance for communication with deafblind persons, for professionals meeting blind and deafblind clients, and for knowledge of multimodal interaction in general.In times of the coronavirus, complying with public health policies is essential to save lives. Understanding the factors that influence compliance with social distancing measures is therefore an urgent issue. The present research investigated the role of political and social trust for social distancing using a variety of methods. In Study 1 (N = 301), conducted with a sample from the United Kingdom in the midst of the virus outbreak (i.e., the first wave), neither political nor social trust had main associations with self-reported social distancing tendencies. However, both factors interacted such that social trust was associated with lower social distancing tendencies among participants with low levels of political trust. In Study 2, using an experimental longitudinal design and again conducted with a sample collected from the UK (N = 268) during the first wave of the pandemic, social distancing practices increased over time, independent of an experimental manipulation of political trust. Moreover, while the interaction between political and social trust from the first study could not be conceptually replicated, social trust was positively related to social distancing intentions. Moving from the individual to the country level and assessing actual behavior at both the first and second wave of the pandemic, in Study 3 (N = 65 countries), country-level political trust was related to less social distancing during the first wave. Social trust was related to a higher growth rate of infections. Against the background of these inconsistent findings, we discuss the potential positive and unexpected negative effects of social trust for social distancing.Sleep is mandatory in most animals that have the nervous system and is universally observed in model organisms ranging from the nematodes, zebrafish, to mammals. These observations suggest that REM sleep and NREM sleep evolved earlier than previously thought. Based on a sample of 2,027 students from a distance education university, this study assessed the psychometric properties of the two-factor structure grit measured by the Grit Questionnaire. The findings suggest that the short form of the Grit Questionnaire is a potentially useful assessment tool for measuring the grit construct for distance learning higher education and that the Consistency of Interests factor is especially relevant to consider the improvement of learning performance for distance education in terms of courses credit and exam attempts. The measurement precision of the Perseverance of Effort factor, however, should be improved in future research to provide higher measurement accuracy and broader item coverage.Purpose The purpose of this study was to verify the long-term effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), school disengagement, and the reasons for leaving school on adolescent delinquency while adjusting for sex. Methods Data were collected from 663 teenagers [male 368, female 295; mean age = 16.81 (SD = 1.10); age range = 13-19 years] through a Longitudinal Survey and Support Plan for Dropouts. Results Multivariate latent growth modeling (LGM) demonstrated that ACEs and school disengagement are positively associated with delinquency and the mediating effect of school disengagement on association between ACEs and delinquency was verified. Teenagers who quit school for personal reasons reported fewer instances of delinquent behavior than adolescents who left because of school reasons. Conclusion This study suggests that researchers and teachers need to consider ACEs and school disengagement as a warning index for delinquency with school dropout. In addition, the reason for leaving school should be considered to clarify the effect of school dropout on delinquency in adolescents who dropout.

The guided tour was tailored to a specific group (adult deafblind tactile signers and their interpreters) visiting one of the oldest cathedrals and pilgrim sites in Scandinavia, with interpreters following up the guide's presentation and providing descriptions based on the given situation. The study opens for a broader understanding of the repertoire of multimodal interaction and how such interaction may be handled as inputs in communication processes. Understanding the factors that influence compliance with social distancing measures is therefore an urgent issue. The present research investigated the role of political and social trust for social distancing using a variety of methods. In Study 1 (N = 301), conducted with a sample from the United Kingdom in the midst of the virus outbreak (i.e., the first wave), neither political nor social trust had main associations with self-reported social distancing tendencies. However, both factors interacted such that social trust was associated with lower social distancing tendencies among participants with low levels of political trust. In Study 2, using an experimental longitudinal design and again conducted with a sample collected from the UK (N = 268) during the first wave of the pandemic, social distancing practices increased over time, independent of an experimental manipulation of political trust. Moreover, while the interaction between political and social trust from the first study could not be conceptually replicated, social trust was positively related to social distancing intentions. Moving from the individual to the country level and assessing actual behavior at both the first and second wave of the pandemic, in Study 3 (N = 65 countries), country-level political trust was related to less social distancing during the first wave. Social trust was related to a higher growth rate of infections. The findings suggest that the short form of the Grit Questionnaire is a potentially useful assessment tool for measuring the grit construct for distance learning higher education and that the Consistency of Interests factor is especially relevant to consider the improvement of learning performance for distance education in terms of courses credit and exam attempts. The measurement precision of the Perseverance of Effort factor, however, should be improved in future research to provide higher measurement accuracy and broader item coverage.Purpose The purpose of this study was to verify the long-term effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), school disengagement, and the reasons for leaving school on adolescent delinquency while adjusting for sex. Methods Data were collected from 663 teenagers [male 368, female 295; mean age = 16.81 (SD = 1.10); age range = 13-19 years] through a Longitudinal Survey and Support Plan for Dropouts. Results Multivariate latent growth modeling (LGM) demonstrated that ACEs and school disengagement are positively associated with delinquency and the mediating effect of school disengagement on association between ACEs and delinquency was verified. Teenagers who quit school for personal reasons reported fewer instances of delinquent behavior than adolescents who left because of school reasons. Conclusion This study suggests that researchers and teachers need to consider ACEs and school disengagement as a warning index for delinquency with school dropout. A circular analogue of the diffusion model adapted for continuous response tasks is applied to a continuous-outcome source memory task. In contrast to existing models of source retrieval that attribute all of the variability in responding to memory, the circular diffusion model decomposes noise into variability arising from memory and from decision processes. We compared three models (1) a single diffusion process with trial-to-trial variability in drift rate, (2) a mixture of two diffusion processes, one with positive drift that does not vary from trial-to-trial, and a second zero-drift process that represents discrete guessing, and (3) a hybrid model that mixed positive and zero-drift processes with trial-to-trial variability in the positive drift process. Comparison of model fits to joint response error and response-time (RT) data suggest that a memory strength threshold under which no information is retrieved appears to underlie responding in a continuous-report source memory task. Additionally, we also conditioned participants' source responding on their confidence in an old/new recognition task, ruling out the possibility that participant guessing was only due to unrecognized items. Indoor PM2.5 annual median concentration (41.80 µg/m3) was also higher than the annual standard of ASHRAE guideline (15 µg/m3). The annual median concentrations of ∑18PAHs indoors (44.23 ng/m3) and outdoors (189.6 ng/m3) were highest in winter and descended in the order of autumn > spring > summer. Contrary to summer and autumn, indoor/outdoor concentration ratios were less than 1 in spring and winter, indicating that the contribution of outdoor particle infiltration was more significant than that of indoor sources. The positive matrix factorization model suggested that indoor PAHs came from three sources vehicle emissions (43%), biomass burning (37%), industry emissions, and coal combustion (20%). Outdoor PAHs came from four sources petroleum volatilization (39%), vehicle emissions (30%), coal combustion (18%), and biomass burning (13%). The incremental lifetime cancer risk values of indoor and outdoor PAHs in winter exceeded the acceptable level (10-6), and the carcinogenic risk of adults was higher than that of children and teenagers. Delayed intubation is associated with high mortality. There is a lack of objective criteria to decide the time of intubation. We assessed a recently described combined oxygenation index (ROX index) to predict intubation in immunocompromised patients. The study is a secondary analysis of randomized trials in immunocompromised patients, including all patients who received high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC). The first objective was to evaluate the accuracy of the ROX index to predict intubation for patients with acute respiratory failure.
In the study, 302 patients received HFNC. Acute respiratory failure was mostly related to pneumonia (n = 150, 49.7%). Within 2 (1-3) days, 115 (38.1%) patients were intubated. The ICU mortality rate was 27.4% (n = 83). At 6h, the ROX index was lower for patients who needed intubation compared with those who did not [4.79 (3.69-7.01) vs. 6.10 (4.48-8.68), p < 0.001]. The accuracy of the ROX index to predict intubation was poor [AUC = 0.623 (0.557-0.689)], with low performance using the threshold previously found (4.

Additionally, the visual analogue scale (VAS) scores have been used as an objective measurement for measuring pain, especially in a complex disease such as endometriosis. Pediatric burn injuries result in severe and long-term complications in the developing world, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Accurate data on burn injuries are either unavailable or incomplete in Eritrea.
The objective of this study was to define the clinical characteristics of pediatric burn injuries in the Burn Care Unit of Halibet hospital in 2018 in Asmara, Eritrea.
The study design was a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study. The medical records of pediatric patients aged 15 years and below admitted to the Burn Care Unit of Halibet hospital between January 2018 and December 2018 were assessed.
In the study period, 524 children with burn injuries were admitted to the Unit. The mean age of the study group was 4.2±3.7 years. Nearly 75% of the patients were in the age group 1-5 years. In 95.3% of the patients, scalds were the most common type of burn with burn injury occurring mostly indoor in 98.1% of cases. The average length of hospital stay was 4.6±8.4 days with a median of 1 day. Ince of burn injury in children.
A major concern and challenge faced by the educational institution during coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and consequent lockdown is the timely conduct of the summative assessment. Unlike cognitive assessment, real-time practical assessment through online mode, without compromising principles of assessment is difficult. This study was performed to analyze an alternative hybrid approach adopted for the postgraduate practical summative assessment in pathology.
Evaluation of the process of summative assessment was done where internal and external examiners synchronously assessed examinees real-time on-site (face to face) and off-site (remotely through live videoconferencing) respectively. A pre-validated questionnaire on a novel approach for assessment and feedback (with close-ended on 5-point Likert scale and open-ended questions) were administered to nine participants comprising three final year postgraduates in pathology, four examiners (two internal and two externals) and two technical experts fr novel hybrid method of real-time synchronous assessment with on-site and off-site examiners may be a feasible and successful model for conducting summative assessment and can be practiced in time of need.
We designed a curriculum mapping tool which enables medical students to access intended learning outcomes (ILOs) on their iPads in the workplace. Students were encouraged to use the online curriculum map in a specially planned teaching session question-based collaborative learning (QBCL). The aim of the session was to empower medical students to constructively align their experiential learning with the learning outcomes of the undergraduate curriculum. In doing so, our session aimed to provide students with a greater understanding of the curriculum, improve their insights into assessment and their question-writing abilities.
The QBCL pre-session preparation involved reviewing a patient with a presentation that aligned to the year-specific ILOs. During a 150 minute QBCL session, students received training on how to write high quality multiple choice questions (MCQs) delivered by a faculty member of Imperial College School of Medicine. They then worked collaboratively in groups and created MCQs based on their clinical encounters.

A pre-validated questionnaire on a novel approach for assessment and feedback (with close-ended on 5-point Likert scale and open-ended questions) were administered to nine participants comprising three final year postgraduates in pathology, four examiners (two internal and two externals) and two technical experts fr novel hybrid method of real-time synchronous assessment with on-site and off-site examiners may be a feasible and successful model for conducting summative assessment and can be practiced in time of need. We designed a curriculum mapping tool which enables medical students to access intended learning outcomes (ILOs) on their iPads in the workplace. Students were encouraged to use the online curriculum map in a specially planned teaching session question-based collaborative learning (QBCL). The aim of the session was to empower medical students to constructively align their experiential learning with the learning outcomes of the undergraduate curriculum. In doing so, our session aimed to provide students with a greater understanding of the curriculum, improve their insights into assessment and their question-writing abilities. The QBCL pre-session preparation involved reviewing a patient with a presentation that aligned to the year-specific ILOs. During a 150 minute QBCL session, students received training on how to write high quality multiple choice questions (MCQs) delivered by a faculty member of Imperial College School of Medicine. Recycling food by-products as animal feed could decrease livestock production costs. We investigated how replacing conventional corn and wheat bran feed (control) with rice bran and soybean curd residue (RBSR) would influence lamb performance and meat quality. Eleven lambs were divided into the control and the RBSR-fed groups. The amount of feed consumed by the lambs, as well as their body weight, nutrient properties (total protein, non-esterified fatty acid, total cholesterol, glucose concentrations) in blood samples, and fecal condition were evaluated. Meat quality (water holding capacity, cooking loss, fat content, and shear force) of their carcasses were also evaluated. Results shows daily body weight gain per lamb in the RBSR-fed group was approximately 2.2-fold than that in the control group. The mean total blood protein and glucose concentrations exhibited increasing trends after feeding with RBSR. In addition, the shear force of the meat was significantly lower and crude fat content was significantly higher in RBSR-fed lambs than in lamb fed the control feed. The study concluded that, RBSR could replace conventional feed for Japanese sheep and can be used to not only reduce feed and disposal costs but also increase animal production and meat quality.Ten male sheep (Sheep group; SGk) and seven male goats (Goat group; GGks+) were used in this study. No significant changes in heart and respiratory rates were observed in both experimental groups. All animals showed surgical analgesia and stood conscious or slightly sedated with ataxia immediately after the drugs administration (T5), allowing the execution of bilateral orchiectomy. The generalizability of findings of Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) is undermined by low or biased recruitment. Reasons for participant refusal are infrequently reported in published literature.
To apply the Theoretical Framework of Acceptability (TFA) to (1) explore patient-reported reasons for declining to participate in a RCT comparing a new service model (patient-initiated appointments) with standard care (appointments scheduled by clinician) for managing blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm; (2) to explore associations between decliners' perceptions of acceptability and non-participation.
Eligible patients (n=242) were approached to participate in the trial. Phase 1 decliners provided a brief reason for refusal. Reasons were analysed descriptively and reviewed against TFA constructs.
Consecutive decliners participated in short semi-structured interviews, to explore their reasons for refusal in more depth. Interviews were transcribed and analysed, with the TFA as a coding framework.
Eighty-sevification of problematic aspects of the new appointment booking system which could be addressed to enhance acceptability.Here, we describe the modified delta-shaped anastomosis (DSA) via the overlap method and how it was a beneficial intracorporeal anastomotic technique for four patients who underwent laparoscopic colectomy. After resecting the colon on both sides of the lesion, proximal and distal colon were laid in an overlap fashion and fixed using sutures. The entry hole was created using an ultrasound scalpel at a point 3 cm proximal to right colic stump and 7 cm distal to left colic stump on the anti-mesenteric side. Then, two arms of the linear stapler were inserted inside each lumen and fired. Finally, using the linear stapler, the common entry hole was closed in a delta-shaped manner. The mean duration of surgery was determined to be 218.4 (196-369) minutes, and amount of blood loss was measured to be 11 (5-25) mL. No intraoperative and postoperative complications were observed. Median postoperative hospital stay was 12 days. Thus, modified DSA via overlap method can be considered as a safe and simple IA technique.Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) has been widely used as a tumor marker for detecting hepatocellular carcinoma and yolk sac tumors. Recently, cases of gastrointestinal cancer with elevated serum AFP levels have been reported. However, AFP-producing colon cancer is considered rarer than other AFP-producing gastrointestinal cancers. In this study, we report on a case of a 47-year-old woman who was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer and underwent sigmoidectomy and lymph node dissection. Postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) was performed after the curative surgery. After the seventh course of AC, multiple liver masses and enlarged systemic lymph nodes were detected; these were later diagnosed as liver metastases from sigmoid colon cancer. Laboratory examination revealed high AFP levels (14,657.8 ng/mL). After confirming the recurrence, her condition worsened rapidly, and she eventually died 8 months after the operation. Autopsy and histopathological findings showed that the liver mass was positive for AFP staining, but the sigmoid colon cancer tissue was not. We then determined that liver metastases of the colon cancer were more likely than germ cell carcinoma according to the clinical course and pathological findings. We assumed that colon cancer cells can rapidly expand by dedifferentiation, and we diagnosed AFP-producing colon cancer with liver metastases. Despite curative surgery and AC for AFP-producing colon cancer, the patient died of liver and systemic lymph node metastases.

The prevalence of Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in cervical lesions is under-reported, especially in Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infected persons.
This study determined the prevalence of viral mono-infections, co-infections and squamous cell intraepithelial lesions (SIL) in HIV seropositive (HIV+) and HIV seronegative (HIV-) women.
This study included HIV+ and HIV- women (105 each). Cervical smears and viral antibodies were evaluated by Papanicolaou's technique and ELISA method, respectively.
The prevalence of HSV-2, HPV and EBV infections, and SIL were higher in HIV+ women (75.2, 41.9, 41 and 32.4%) than in HIV- women (45.7, 26.7, 26.7 and 13.3%) at p< 0.0001, p= 0.029, 0.041 and 0.002, respectively. Visual impairment is one of the major public health problems worldwide, especially in developing countries.
To determine the prevalence of visual impairment and its associated factors among school children in Gurage Zone, Southern Ethiopia.
A cross sectional study was conducted in eight primary schools of Gurage Zone. A total of 1064 pupils, of whom589 boys and 475 girls were selected using multistage sampling technique. Socio-demographic characteristics of the participants were collected using structured questionnaires and visual acuity was measured using Snellen's chart. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the associated factors of visual impairment.
The prevalence of visual impairment was 5.2%. Factors significantly associated with visual impairment were age group of 13-18 years (AOR = 9.44, 95% CI = 3.83 - 23.25), school grade level of 5- 8 (AOR = 2.97, 95% CI = 1.23 - 7.17), rural residents (AOR = 2.59, 95% CI = 1.22 - 5.54), family's monthly income of less than 2000 Ethiopian Birr (AOR = 2.87, 95% CI = 1.08 - 7.61) and visually impaired parents (AOR = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.06 - 4.39).

Research on aspects of neurodevelopment such as feeding and swallowing difficulties in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is limited in low and middle income countries such as South Africa.
A descriptive comparative group design was used to investigate feeding and swallowing difficulties of young children with ASD in comparison to typically developing peers. The Brief Autism Mealtime Behavioural Inventory (BAMBI) was used.
Findings indicated a significant difference in the severity of feeding and swallowing difficulties between the two groups. Difficulties such as food selectivity, sensory processing difficulties, oral-motor difficulties and symptoms of dysphagia were identified. The findings added to the existing global literature on feeding and swallowing difficulties in young children with ASD but provide a unique first perspective on these difficulties in South African children with ASD.
Findings also highlighted the use of the BAMBI as an adjunct clinical tool to encourage comprehensive parental report during feeding assessment in this population. Cultural adaptation of the BAMBI for future use in African countries should be considered. A better local understanding of the parental perspective on the multidimensional nature of the feeding and swallowing difficulties displayed by young children with ASD was obtained.

Microbial contamination of orthodox ophthalmic preparations poses a serious threat to the user by causing ocular infections. There is no such information about unorthodox ophthalmic preparations in a medical pluralistic system such as Ghana. The aim of this study was to assess unorthodox ophthalmic medications on the Ghanaian market for possible microbial contaminations.
Unorthodox ophthalmic preparations were collected across different herbal and homeopathic outlets in Ghana. A total of 27 samples were collected from the ten (10) regions in Ghana. The samples were inoculated in different culture media (Plate count Agar, Blood Agar, MacConkey Agar, Saboraud Dextrose Agar). The microorganisms isolated were identified using standard microbiological procedures and antimicrobial susceptibility was done to determine whether they were resistant or susceptible strains.
All the samples were contaminated with bacteria and the majority were contaminated with fungus. A total of forty-eight bacteria
was isolated thus seven different types namely
, Bacilli spp.,
,
,
,
spp. and
with
being the predominant bacteria. For fungi, a total of eleven fungi species thus four different types namely

Per the class of preparations, 15 contaminants were isolated from ten (10) anti-inflammatory preparations. The fungi were all susceptible to both Ketoconazole and Fluconazole but the bacteria were resistant to all the conventional antibiotics except Ciprofloxacin and Gentamycin.
