  • Cryptorchidism is one of the main risk factors for infertility and testicular cancer. Orchiopexy surgery corrects cryptorchidism effects. Different models of cryptorchidism developed in the rat include surgery. We assessed testicular alterations in rats submitted to surgical cryptorchidism and examined their potential for reversibility at different time points in order to verify time dependency effect(s) on the recovery of the undescended testes. Cryptorchidism was induced in 3-week-old rats. Animals were euthanized 3, 6 or 11 weeks after surgery to evaluate the morphological progression of cryptorchidism-induced germinative epithelial alterations. Other groups underwent orchiopexy 3, 5 or 9 weeks after surgical cryptorchidism, before or after puberty. Animals were euthanized 3 or 8 weeks after orchiopexy. Controls underwent sham surgery at the same time points as the surgical groups. Cryptorchid testes showed decreased weight, germinative epithelial degeneration, apoptosis and vacuolation, corresponding to impairment of spermatogenesis and of Sertoli cells. Some tubules has a Sertoli cell-only pattern and atrophy. The intensity of damage was related to the duration of cryptorchidism. After orchiopexy, spermatogenesis completely recovered only when testicular relocation occurred before puberty and the interval for recovery was extended. These results indicate that age, sexual maturity and extension of germ cell damage were relevant for producing germ cell restoration and normal spermatogenesis. We provide original observations on the time dependency of testicular alterations induced by cryptorchidism and their restoration using morphologic, morphometric and immunohistochemical approaches. All associations remained statistically significant in multivariable analyses. In conclusion, ddPCR is an accurate and easily feasible technique for quantification of KRAS mutations in ctDNA. The presence of detectable KRAS mutation in plasma at baseline was associated with worse PFS and OS. We used these novel data to investigate how regional- and basin-scale environmental variability, in concert with fishing activity, affected individual somatic growth rates and the magnitude of spatial synchrony among stocks. Changes in somatic growth can affect individual fitness and a range of population and fishery metrics such as recruitment success, maturation schedules and stock bially promote individual growth but then possibly heighten the sensitivity of stocks to environmental change.Carbene-based radicals are important for both fundamental and applied chemical research. Herein, extensive electrochemical investigations of nine different 1,2,3-triazolylidene selenium adducts are reported. This study is a cross-sectional survey of medical directors at PALISI-affiliated PICU in the United States. Centers performing pediatric LT were analyzed. Study measures included PICU practices regarding staffing, composition of the multidisciplinary team, early post-LT graft and patient monitoring, and anticoagulation. Of the thirty-five responding centers, twenty-five had a LT program which accounted for one-half of all US pediatric LTs. For analysis, centers were categorized by volume high (7), medium (11), and low (7). The majority of PICU teams included an intensivist (80%) and hepatologist (84%). High-volume centers were less likely to have 24-hour in-house attending coverage (29%, compared to 64% (medium) and 100% (low)).

    Ga-fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) and
    F-FDG PET/CT in imaging locally advanced oesophageal cancer, and evaluate the potential usefulness of
    Ga-FAPI PET/CT on gross target volume (GTV) delineation aimed at radiotherapy planning for oesophageal cancer as compared with contrast-enhanced CT (CE-CT) and
    F-FDG PET/CT.

    Twenty-one patients with newly diagnosed oesophageal cancer who underwent both
    F-FDG and
    Ga-FAPI PET/CT scans were selected. GTVs of the primary tumours based on CE-CT (GTV
    ), PET/CT, and CE-CT plus PET/CT were delineated. Gross tumour lengths were measured by GTVs and endoscopy and recorded.

    The
    Ga-FAPI PET showed significantly higher radiotracer uptake than
    F-FDG PET (median SUVmax 16.71 vs. 11.23; P=0.002) in the primary tumours. SUV thresholds of FAPI ×20%, 30%, 40%, and FDG ×40% showed similar lesion lengths compared with that in endoscopic examination (P>0.05). GTV
    demonstrated the largest volume (median 48.80mm

    ) than PET-based GTVs. For PET/CT-guided complementary contouring of GTV

We present the case of a 59-year-old man with penile ring entrapment secondary to the placement of 14 metallic rings for sexual pleasure. We recommend involvement of the fire emergency service if local equipment is inadequate for urgent penile ring removal.Greyscale and color doppler ultrasound are the standard when investigating testicular lesions. However, they cannot provide information on the microvasculature. As such, differentiating benign from malignant tumors is challenging. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) uses ultrasound contrast agents that are exclusively intravascular to image the microvasculature. This review assessed CEUS outcomes in investigating intratesticular lesions and concluded that qualitative CEUS provides the most advantage by confirming vascularity, thus differentiating non-neoplastic from neoplastic lesions with added confidence, allowing for appropriate management. Whilst results for quantitative CEUS are promising in distinguishing malignant from benign neoplasms, further research on its benefits is required.
    To report the first case series of ureterorenoscopy in North America using the High Power Super Pulse Thulium Fiber Laser for the treatment of upper urinary tract stones.

    After Institutional Review Board approval, a multicentric retrospective chart review of patients treated with the High Power Super Pulse Thulium Fiber Laser from October 2019 to March 2020 was conducted. Basic demographic information, pre-operative, and peri-operative data were recorded.

    Seventy-six patients were included with a mean age of 60.9 ± 13.3 years. 118 stones were treated including 32 within the ureter, 49 in the lower pole, 37 in mid or upper poles. Dusting technique was commonly used (67.1%) with pulse frequencies up to 2400 Hz. Mean operative time was 59.4 ± 31.5 minutes. Mean laser time and total laser energy were 10.8 ± 14.1 minutes and 12.5 ±19.1 KJ, respectively. Intraoperative complications were limited to 7 grade 1, 3 grade 2, and 1 grade 3 ureteral injuries and one case of renal collecting system bleeding that was adequately managed with laser coagulation settings (1J-20Hz).

    This initial case series in North America of the High Power Super Pulse Thulium Fiber Laser is promising for the treatment of urolithiasis. Sub-200 μm fibers and dusting settings up to 2400 Hz were utilized successfully. No specific complications related to use of the laser were seen.

    We examined whether contraceptive method type, satisfaction with use, and confidence in correct use were independently associated with switching intentions, a precursor of switching behaviors.

    Data were from a probability-based sample survey carried out in Delaware and Maryland in 2016 and 2017 among women ages 18 to 44. Women's current contraceptive methods were classified into 5 categories coitally-dependent methods (barrier methods, withdrawal, and natural family planning); oral contraceptive pills, patches, and rings; injections; implants; and intrauterine contraception (IUC). Satisfaction, confidence, and switching intentions were dichotomized into being very versus less satisfied, being completely versus less confident, and having very low versus not very low switching intentions. We conducted binomial logistic regression to examine whether method type, satisfaction, and confidence were independently associated with having very low switching intentions, adjusting for a range of covariates including sociodemographics, perceived health, religious attendance frequency, sexual, contraceptive, and reproductive experiences, and state of residence (Maryland or Delaware).

    Refractory reflux esophagitis (RRE), unresponsive to conventional proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) is a complication in esophagectomy with gastric pull-up. Vonoprazan, a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, has been available in Japan since 2015. Here, we investigated the efficacy of vonoprazan on PPI-resistant RRE after esophagectomy with gastric pull-up.

Eighty-two patients and their 4 treating dermatologists from one dermatology department participated in the study (43 females, 39 males) with a mean age of 46.6 years (SD ±23.9). The reason for TD was a chronic disease in the majority (87.8%), and mainly as a follow-up (96.3%). Regarding satisfaction, almost all categories rated around 9 on a 0-10 verbal analogue scale. The same level of global satisfaction could be seen between the patients and the physicians as well as for the quality of the patient-physician relation and whether all questions could be addressed during the TC. Physicians showed significantly higher scores than patients only for the category of "length" of the consultation. Gender, age, as well as distance between the clinic and home of the patient were not influencing factors for satisfaction. Regarding the technical parameters, the evaluation was mostly comparable for patients and physicians, but overall lower than the relational satisfaction parameters, especially for image quality.   • The impact of nanopriming on oxidative status of plants was also studied by measuring the activity enzymes like peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (***) and degree of lipid peroxidation. A prominent decrease in the activity of these enzymes was observed which may be attributed to low reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in nanoprimed plants as compared to control.     Water-deficit stress is the most devastating environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth causing yield losses and low crop productivity. In this study, we employed sodium nitroprusside (SNP) as a seed priming agent for the acclimation of water-deficit stress in wheat plants by invoking priming memory.

    The SNP-primed (75, 100, and 125μM) and non-primed controls were allowed to grow in pots under water deficit and normal conditions. The flag leaves of 98-days mature plants were used for biochemical and physiological studies by following the well-established methods.

    The antioxidant and hydrolytic enzymes were upregulated while reducing sugars, total sugars, and glycine betaine increased significantly in flag leaves of wheat plants originated from SNP-treated seeds compared to control under water deficit stress. However, a significant reduction in MDA and proline contents represented a lesser ROS production which resulted in enhanced cell membrane stability. Consequently, there was a significant enhancement in yield, plant biomass and 100 grains weight of wheat plants under water deficit stress.

In two postoperative TBI models, TM/PC hydrogel effectively responded the TBI surgical environment and released drug. TM/PC hydrogel significantly depleted ROS and reduced brain edema. In addition, reactive astrocytes and activated microglia were decreased, growth-associated protein 43 (GAP43) and doublecortin (DCX) were increased, suggested that TM/PC hydrogel had the strongest anti-inflammatory effect and effectively promoted nerve regeneration after TBI.     Severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by novel coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in Wuhan (China) in December 2019. Here we evaluated a panel of biomarkers to phenotype patients and to define the role of immuno-inflammatory mediators as biomarkers of severity.

    Serum samples were obtained from 24 COVID-19 patients on admission to hospital, before any treatment or infusion of intravenous steroids or invasive ventilation. KL-6 IL-6 and C-peptide were measured by chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. IL-6 assay was validated for accuracy and precision. The validity of variables used to distinguish severe from mild-to-moderate patients was assessed by areas under curves (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and logistic regression was performed to combine parameters of the two groups.

    In the severe group, IL-6, CRP and KL-6 concentrations were significantly higher than in mild-to-moderate patients. KL-6, IL-6 and CRP concentrations were directly correlated with each other. ROC curve analysis of the logistic regression model including IL-6, KL-6 and CRP showed the best performance with an AUC of 0.95.

We apply system generalized method of moments to a panel dataset of 91 countries from 1971 to 2015. The estimation results consistently reveal that although income inequality and innovation significantly contribute to better environmental quality, the effect of one factor largely depends on the evolution of the other. Specifically, the beneficial impact of income equality on environmental quality can only be achieved at a high level of innovation. In the same way, innovation is only an effective tool for a nation to reduce environmental degradation when income is fairly distributed among its citizens. This means that more equitable income distribution and higher innovative capacities are two interrelated prerequisites that must both be in place for a country to actualize their beneficial environmental impacts. Overall, our findings shed new light on the relationship between income inequality, innovation, and environmental quality, and they provide relevant implications for policymakers with regard to tackling the dual tasks of reducing inequality and pollution.

We apply system generalized method of moments to a panel dataset of 91 countries from 1971 to 2015. The estimation results consistently reveal that although income inequality and innovation significantly contribute to better environmental quality, the effect of one factor largely depends on the evolution of the other. Specifically, the beneficial impact of income equality on environmental quality can only be achieved at a high level of innovation. In the same way, innovation is only an effective tool for a nation to reduce environmental degradation when income is fairly distributed among its citizens. This means that more equitable income distribution and higher innovative capacities are two interrelated prerequisites that must both be in place for a country to actualize their beneficial environmental impacts.   • Acquired estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) mutation is being promoted as a key mechanism of resistance to endocrine therapies in breast cancers. It is significative to monitor ESR1 mutations in real time, which provide an opportunity to alter therapy as these mutations emerge. Previous assays based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) and digital PCR (dPCR) usually due to high costs and complicated workflows hampered their clinical adoption in general medical institutions. Here, we proposed a new strategy using base-specific invasive reaction assisted qPCR measure for ESR1 mutations in cfDNA. Two pivotal steps involved in this strategy are target-specific signal generation and the quantification without adding any internal reference or making standard calibration curves. The strategy enabled a high specificity of 0.1% (better than traditional NGS-based method) and a minimum sensitivity of 0.1 copies μL-1. As validation, with the strategy, cfDNA from endocrine therapy-resistant breast cancers and untreated ones were successfully analyzed (20% mutation rate (2/10) with mutation abundance of 0.54-1.65% vs. 0% mutation rate (0/5)). By virtue of cost-effective, highly flexible and precise, the strategy could be readily implemented in general laboratory, showing promising application perspectives in analysis of other types of mutations.The clinically tested KCa3.1 channel blocker, senicapoc, has been proven to have excellent pharmacological properties and prior clinical trials found it to be safe for use in patients with sickle cell anaemia. Our aim was to develop a sensitive, rapid and accurate ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method using pneumatically assisted electrospray ionisation (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS) suitable for the determination of senicapoc in plasma samples. Unfortunately, direct analysis of senicapoc in crude acetonitrile extracts of human plasma samples by UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS was subjected to significant and variable ion suppression from coeluting phospholipids (PLs). The interferences were mainly caused by the presence of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine classes of PLs, including their lyso-products. However, the PLs were easily removed from crude extracts by filtration through a sorbent with Lewis acid properties which decreased the total ion suppression effect to approximately 5%. Based on this technique, a simple high-throughput UHPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the determination of senicapoc in 100-μL plasma samples. The lower limit of quantification was 0.1 ng/mL. The mean true extraction recovery was close to 100 %. The relative intra-laboratory reproducibility standard deviations of the measured concentrations were 8% and 4% at concentrations of 0.1 ng/mL and 250 ng/mL, respectively.   • Bovines have evolved a subset of antibodies with ultra-long heavy chain complementarity determining regions that harbour cysteine-rich **** domains. To produce high-affinity peptides, we previously isolated autonomous 3-6 kDa **** domains from bovine antibodies. Here, we show that binding of four **** domain peptides elicits a range of effects on the clinically validated drug target complement C5. Using multiple human cell lines, including human lung epithelial cells, we found that the lentiviral particles pseudotyped with Spike D614G are more effective at transducing cells than ones pseudotyped with wild-type Spike. The increased transduction with Spike D614G ranged from 1.3- to 2.4-fold in Caco-2 and Calu-3 cells expressing endogenous ACE2 and from 1.5- to 7.7-fold in A549ACE2 and Huh7.5ACE2 overexpressing ACE2. Furthermore, trans-complementation of SARS-CoV-2 virus with Spike D614G showed an increased infectivity in human cells. We describe, both anatomically and functionally, a multilayer circuit in which inhibitory and excitatory MBONs converge on the same genetic subset of FSB and LAL neurons. This circuit architecture enables the brain to update and integrate information with previous experience before executing appropriate behavioral responses. Our use of trans-Tango provides a genetically accessible anatomical framework for investigating the functional relevance of components within these complex and interconnected circuits.
    To assess the seasonality of restless legs syndrome (RLS) using data from the Korean national health insurance database.

    We retrospectively reviewed a randomly selected sample representing 3% of the national health insurance claims database in South Korea. From this sample, we obtained the monthly numbers of patients with RLS and diagnoses from 2009 to 2016, along with prescriptions for monthly dopamine agonists and clonazepam for patients with RLS from 2009 to 2013. Total dopamine agonist and clonazepam doses were converted to levodopa-equivalent doses, and the monthly cumulative prescription dose was calculated. Cosinor analysis was used to evaluate the seasonal pattern of each variable.

    This study included 11,466 patients with RLS and their diagnoses and 4,887 prescriptions for dopamine agonists and clonazepam. There were significant seasonal patterns in the numbers of patients with RLS (P < .001) and diagnoses (P < .001), both of which peaked in August. The magnitude of the greatest difference in the number of patients with RLS between August (highest) and February (lowest) was 29.96% (95% confidence interval, 24.03-100.80), and that of the number of RLS diagnoses was 39.56% (95% confidence interval, 31.24-47.89). The cumulative prescription dose of medication showed no significant seasonality.

    Our findings suggest that the prevalence of RLS is seasonally affected, with an increase during summer.

We retrospectively reviewed a randomly selected sample representing 3% of the national health insurance claims database in South Korea. From this sample, we obtained the monthly numbers of patients with RLS and diagnoses from 2009 to 2016, along with prescriptions for monthly dopamine agonists and clonazepam for patients with RLS from 2009 to 2013. Total dopamine agonist and clonazepam doses were converted to levodopa-equivalent doses, and the monthly cumulative prescription dose was calculated. Cosinor analysis was used to evaluate the seasonal pattern of each variable. This study included 11,466 patients with RLS and their diagnoses and 4,887 prescriptions for dopamine agonists and clonazepam. There were significant seasonal patterns in the numbers of patients with RLS (P < .001) and diagnoses (P < .001), both of which peaked in August. The magnitude of the greatest difference in the number of patients with RLS between August (highest) and February (lowest) was 29.96% (95% confidence interval, 24.03-100.80), and that of the number of RLS diagnoses was 39.56% (95% confidence interval, 31.24-47.89). Genomic regions upstream or downstream of genes, gene introns and gene untranslated regions were all involved. The PCAWG adult cancer cohort yielded different significant SNV-expression associations from the CBTTC pediatric brain tumor cohort. The SNV-expression associations involved a wide range of cancer types and histologies, as well as potential gain or loss of transcription factor binding sites. Notable genes with SNV-associated increased expression include TERT, COPS3, POLE2 and HDAC2-involving multiple cancer types-MYC, BCL2, PIM1 and IGLL5-involving lymphomas-and CYHR1-involving pediatric low-grade gliomas. The inflection point of temperature is close to the ABE fermentation temperature of 310 K. The condensed butanol by desorption was 145 g L-1, with a satisfying regeneration performance. 1H NMR and FT-IR spectra indicated that the aromatic units of lignin formed π-systems with A/B/E. The chemical constitutions of the polysaccharides were neutral sugars (51.4%-89.7%), uronic acids (1.0%-30.2%) and sulfate esters (3.4%-8.1%), with various ratios of monosaccharides including rhamnose (1.4%-6.1%), arabinose (7.1%-21.2%), xylose (0.2%-4.8%), mannose (39.9%-79.0%), glucose (6.0%-11.1%) and galactose (2.6%-22.0%). The molecular properties of the polysaccharides were investigated by the HPSEC-UV-MALLS-RI system, revealing the Mw 130.0 × 103-576.5 × 103 g/moL, Rg 87.6-382.6 nm and SVg 0.3-54.3 cm3/g. The polysaccharides stimulated RAW264.7 cells to produce considerable amounts of NO and up-regulate the expression of TNF-α, IL-1 and COX-2 genes. Polysaccharides exhibited the growth inhibitory effects on cancer cells lines of AGS, MKN-28 and MKN-45, in which F2 fraction exhibited prominent bioactivities. The AGS cells treated with F2 experienced condensed cytoplasm, shrinkage of nucleus and chromatin marginalization with the highest number of cells at early-stage apoptosis reaching 54.6%. The inhibitory effect of F2 polysaccharide on AGS cells was through MAPKs and STAT3 signaling pathways. The backbone of the F2 was mainly linked by (1 → 4)-linked mannopyranosyl and (1 → 3)-linked galactopyranosyl. Taken together, the polysaccharide from A. asphodeloides rhizomes could be utilized as medicinal, pharmacological and functional food ingredients.Porous starch (PS) was used as the core material carrier to adsorb fennel essential oil (FEO). The mechanism of action of mushroom polysaccharides is to stimulate T-cells, B-cells, natural killer cells, and macrophage dependent immune responses via binding to receptors like the toll-like receptor-2, dectin-1. The present review offers summarized and significant information about the structural and biological properties of mushroom polysaccharides, and their potential for development of therapeutic materials.The protein corona on nano drug carriers is an important well-known biological issue that often induce biological incompatibility and screens the targeting molecules on the surfaces of carriers, therefore, the design of NPs with good protein corona-free property is highly desired and challenged. The natural polysaccharide has been demonstrated as one types of stealth materials after the functional group modification process, but the types and structures of their chains has never been considered. Here, we have designed five types of core-shell starch-coated poly (methyl methacrylate) nanoparticles and we found the starch coated NPs with low amylose content ( less then 15%) could exhibit the excellent protein corona-free property without any modification and the starch with high amylose content coated NPs can also exhibit protein corona-free property after etherifying the surface of NPs to positive surface charge. Therefore, the combined impact of both low amylose content and positive surface charges by etherification modification of the starch can provide the excellent protein corona-free property for starch coated polymer NPs, that is very promising for highly efficient nano drug carries and marine coatings.

  • The study of eye movements and the measurement of the resulting biopotential, referred to as electrooculography (EOG), may find increasing use in applications within the domain of activity recognition, context awareness, mobile human-computer and human-machine interaction (HCI/HMI), and personal medical devices; provided that, seamless sensing of eye activity and processing thereof is achieved by a truly wearable, low-cost, and accessible technology. The present study demonstrates an alternative to the bulky and expensive camera-based eye tracking systems and reports the development of a graphene textile-based personal assistive device for the first time. This self-contained wearable prototype comprises a headband with soft graphene textile electrodes that overcome the limitations of conventional "wet" electrodes, along with miniaturized, portable readout electronics with real-time signal processing capability that can stream data to a remote device over Bluetooth. The potential of graphene textiles in wearable eye tracking and eye-operated remote object interaction is demonstrated by controlling a mouse cursor on screen for typing with a virtual keyboard and enabling navigation of a four-wheeled robot in a maze, all utilizing five different eye motions initiated with a single channel EOG acquisition. Typing speeds of up to six characters per minute without prediction algorithms and guidance of the robot in a maze with four 180° turns were successfully achieved with perfect pattern detection accuracies of 100% and 98%, respectively.Helium ion microscopy (HIM) offers the opportunity to obtain direct views of biological samples such as cellular structures, virus particles, and microbial interactions. Imaging with the HIM combines sub-nanometer resolution, large depth of field, and high surface sensitivity. Due to its charge compensation capability, the HIM can image insulating biological samples without additional conductive coatings. Here, we present an exploratory HIM study of SARS-CoV-2 infected Vero E6 cells, in which several areas of interaction between cells and virus particles, as well as among virus particles, were imaged. The HIM pictures show the three-dimensional appearance of SARS-CoV-2 and the surface of Vero E6 cells at a multiplicity of infection of approximately 1 with great morphological detail. The absence of a conductive coating allows for a distinction between virus particles bound to the cell membrane and virus particles lying on top of the membrane. After prolonged imaging, it was found that ion-induced deposition of hydrocarbons from the vacuum renders the sample sufficiently conductive to allow for imaging even without charge compensation. Here, a detailed summary of P-TENGs with two-dimensional patterns and three-dimensional structures is reported. P-TENGs have the potential to be used in many practical applications, including self-powered sensing devices, human-machine interaction, electrochemistry, and highly efficient energy harvesting devices. The histological features of the material aspirated from a skin lesion were consistent with tumoral calcinosis. Sanger sequencing identified a novel homozygous non-synonymous sequence variant in exon 10 of the GALNT3 gene (NM_004482.3c.[1681T>A];[1681T>A], NP_004473.2p. [Cys561Ser];[Cys561Ser] in the proband and her affected brother. The parents were heterozygous carriers for the same sequence variant. In conclusion, we report a new variant in the GALNT3 gene that caused HFTC in a North Indian family.

    Is recreational and residential sun exposure associated with risk of endometriosis?

    Tanning bed use in early adulthood, sunscreen use and history of sunburns were associated with a greater risk of endometriosis; however, higher residential UV exposure was associated with a lower endometriosis risk.

    Previous research has reported an association between endometriosis and skin cancer, with evidence of shared risk factors between the two diseases. We investigated the potential associations between ultraviolet radiation and endometriosis risk.

    The Nurses' Health Study II is a prospective cohort of 116429 female US nurses aged 25-42 years at enrolment in 1989. Participants completed self-administered biennial questionnaires through June 2015.

    We investigated self-reported measures of recreational sun-exposure and geocoded residential UV exposure in childhood and adulthood in relation to risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis among premenopausal white women. We used Cox proportional hazards modelve high validity compared to medical records.

    Our results suggest that tanning bed use in early adulthood increases endometriosis risk, potentially through a harmful effect of ultraviolet A wavelengths, and that residential UV exposure reduces risk, possibly via optimal vitamin D synthesis. These findings should be investigated further to enhance our understanding of endometriosis aetiology.

    N/A.The Neisseria gonorrhoeae multilocus sequence type (ST) 1901 is among the lineages most commonly associated with treatment failure. Here, we analyze a global collection of ST-1901 genomes to shed light on the emergence and spread of alleles associated with reduced susceptibility to extended-spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs). The genetic diversity of ST-1901 falls into a minor and a major clade, both of which were inferred to have originated in East Asia. The dispersal of the major clade from Asia happened in two separate waves expanding from ∼1987 and 1996, respectively. Both waves first reached North America, and from there spread to Europe and Oceania, with multiple secondary reintroductions to Asia. The ancestor of the second wave acquired the penA 34.001 allele, which significantly reduces susceptibility to ESCs. Our results suggest that the acquisition of this allele granted the second wave a fitness advantage at a time when ESCs became the key drug class used to treat gonorrhea. Following its establishment globally, the lineage has served as a reservoir for the repeated emergence of clones fully resistant to the ESC ceftriaxone, an essential drug for effective treatment of gonorrhea. We infer that the effective population sizes of both clades went into decline as treatment schemes shifted from fluoroquinolones via ESC monotherapy to dual therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin in Europe and the United States. Despite the inferred recent population size decline, the short evolutionary path from the penA 34.001 allele to alleles providing full ceftriaxone resistance is a cause of concern.The dystrophin-glycoprotein complex (DGC) is a membrane adhesion complex that provides structural stability at the sarcolemma by linking the myocyte's internal cytoskeleton and external extracellular matrix. In Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), the absence of dystrophin leads to the loss of the DGC at the sarcolemma, resulting in sarcolemmal instability and progressive muscle damage. Utrophin (UTRN), an autosomal homolog of dystrophin, is upregulated in dystrophic muscle and partially compensates for the loss of dystrophin in muscle from patients with DMD. Here, we examine the interaction between Utr and sarcospan (SSPN), a small transmembrane protein that is a core component of both UTRN-glycoprotein complex (UGC) and DGC. We show that additional loss of SSPN causes an earlier onset of disease in dystrophin-deficient mdx **** by reducing the expression of the UGC at the sarcolemma. In order to further evaluate the role of SSPN in maintaining therapeutic levels of Utr at the sarcolemma, we tested the effect of Utr transgenic overexpression in mdx **** lacking SSPN (mdxSSPN -/-Utr-Tg). We found that overexpression of Utr restored SSPN to the sarcolemma in mdx muscle but that the ablation of SSPN in mdx muscle reduced Utr at the membrane. Nevertheless, Utr overexpression reduced central nucleation and improved grip strength in both lines. These findings demonstrate that high levels of Utr transgenic overexpression ameliorate the mdx phenotype independently of SSPN expression but that loss of SSPN may impair Utr-based mechanisms that rely on lower levels of Utr protein.
    Unipolar voltage (UV) mapping is increasingly used for guiding ablative therapy of atrial fibrillation (AF) as unipolar electrograms (U-EGMs) are independent of electrode orientation and atrial wavefront direction. This study was aimed at constructing individual, high-resolution sinus rhythm (SR) UV fingerprints to identify low-voltage areas and study the effect of AF episodes in patients with mitral valve disease (MVD).

    Intra-operative epicardial mapping (interelectrode distance 2 mm) of the right and left atrium, Bachmann's bundle (BB), and pulmonary vein area was performed in 67 patients (27 male, 67 ± 11 years) with or without a history of paroxysmal AF (PAF). In all patients, there were considerable regional variations in voltages. UVs at BB were lower in patients with PAF compared with those without [no AF 4.94 (3.56-5.98) mV, PAF 3.30 (2.25-4.57) mV, P = 0.006]. Utrophin (UTRN), an autosomal homolog of dystrophin, is upregulated in dystrophic muscle and partially compensates for the loss of dystrophin in muscle from patients with DMD. Here, we examine the interaction between Utr and sarcospan (SSPN), a small transmembrane protein that is a core component of both UTRN-glycoprotein complex (UGC) and DGC. We show that additional loss of SSPN causes an earlier onset of disease in dystrophin-deficient mdx mice by reducing the expression of the UGC at the sarcolemma. In order to further evaluate the role of SSPN in maintaining therapeutic levels of Utr at the sarcolemma, we tested the effect of Utr transgenic overexpression in mdx mice lacking SSPN (mdxSSPN -/-Utr-Tg). We found that overexpression of Utr restored SSPN to the sarcolemma in mdx muscle but that the ablation of SSPN in mdx muscle reduced Utr at the membrane. Nevertheless, Utr overexpression reduced central nucleation and improved grip strength in both lines. These findings demonstrate that high levels of Utr transgenic overexpression ameliorate the mdx phenotype independently of SSPN expression but that loss of SSPN may impair Utr-based mechanisms that rely on lower levels of Utr protein. Unipolar voltage (UV) mapping is increasingly used for guiding ablative therapy of atrial fibrillation (AF) as unipolar electrograms (U-EGMs) are independent of electrode orientation and atrial wavefront direction. This study was aimed at constructing individual, high-resolution sinus rhythm (SR) UV fingerprints to identify low-voltage areas and study the effect of AF episodes in patients with mitral valve disease (MVD). Intra-operative epicardial mapping (interelectrode distance 2 mm) of the right and left atrium, Bachmann's bundle (BB), and pulmonary vein area was performed in 67 patients (27 male, 67 ± 11 years) with or without a history of paroxysmal AF (PAF). In all patients, there were considerable regional variations in voltages. UVs at BB were lower in patients with PAF compared with those without [no AF 4.94 (3.56-5.98) mV, PAF 3.30 (2.25-4.57) mV, P = 0.006].
