  • To evaluate cardiovascular, autonomic, and oxidative stress markers in eutrophic and overweight offspring of hypertensive parents comparing them to eutrophic and overweight offspring of normotensive parents.

    We conducted a cross-sectional study. We selected 71 male and sedentary subjects, divided into 4 groups eutrophic group with a negative family history of hypertension (EH-,
    = 18) or positive family history of hypertension (EH+,
    = 17), overweight group with a negative family history of hypertension (OH-,
    = 19) or a positive family history of hypertension (OH+,
    = 17), and aged between 18 and 35 years.

    Blood glucose was higher in the OH+ group when compared to other groups. Diastolic blood pressure was increased in OH- and OH+ groups when compared to eutrophic groups. Regarding the HRV, the LF abs was higher in OH- and OH+ groups when compared to the EH- group. LF/HF values were higher in EH+ and OH+ groups when compared to the EH- and OH- groups. As to oxidative stress and the metabolism of nitric oxide, we observed an increase in hydrogen peroxide and nitrite levels in the OH+ group, and in the NADPH oxidase in OH- and OH+ groups when compared to the other groups.

In this study, we investigated whether the Aqueous Extract of G. lucidum (AEGl) reduces the behavioral disorders induced by alcohol. Male (n = 30) and female Wistar rats (n = 40), seventy-two days old, were used for behavioral/biochemical and oral toxicity test, respectively. Animals were exposed to 5 binges (beginning at 35 days old) of ethanol (3 g/kg/day) or distilled water. Twenty-four hours after the last binge administration, animals received AEGl (100 mg/kg/day) or distilled water for three consecutive days. After treatment protocol, open field, elevated plus maze, forced swim, and step-down inhibitory avoidance tests were performed. Oxidative stress parameters were measured to evaluate the REDOX balance. Our results demonstrated that AEGl elicited the recovery of spontaneous horizontal exploration capacity, anxiogenic- and depressive-profile, as well as short-term memory damage induced by binge-ethanol exposure. The endometrial vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) and vascularization flow index (VFI) were significantly higher in fertile women as compared with unexplained infertile women, and the integrin αvβ3, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) levels in uterine fluid were significantly higher in fertile women. The biochemical pregnancy rate, clinical pregnancy rate, and ongoing pregnancy rate in fertile women were 20.12%, 18.34%, and 17.75%, respectively, which were significantly higher compared with unexplained infertile women (7.14%, 5.36%, and 4.17%, respectively). Endometrial thickness (ET), endometrial volume (EV), VI, FI, and VFI measured by ultrasound, and the integrin αvβ3, VEGF, TNF-α, and LIF levels in uterine fluid were all significantly higher in pregnant women as compared with nonpregnant women. The best parameters of ultrasonic indicators for predicting endometrial receptivity in women with unexplained infertility were FI(AUC = 0.894, sensitivity 93.8%, and specificity 83.1%). Histopathological evaluation of the lung tissue was also performed.Key findings Treatment of **** with SG and SG + FC combination intensely diminished the trafficking of total and differential inflammatory cells count into BALF. SG and SG + FC administration significantly reduced the production of inflammatory cytokines, serum IgE levels and restoration of antioxidant stress markers. Histopathological analysis of lung samples effectually weakened bronchial inflammation and mucus production in the lung with a significant reduction in inflammation and mucus score.Conclusion Our study results suggested that SG and SG + FC effectively reduced allergic airway inflammation via inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, NO expressions and oxidative stress parameters. We discuss the limitations of current diagnostic tests - including their lack of availability - and how this may influence global estimates of cases. We review the benefits of antenatal, intrapartum, and post-natal preventive measures. We briefly discuss the management, highlighting the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. Finally, we expose some high priority areas.Expert opinion Neonatal sepsis is a challenging condition requiring a multifaceted approach to address the major diagnostic issues, but also the underlying socio-economic causes that nourish epidemic cases in LMIC.

Current reports have assessed the toxicity of oligomeric α-Syn (o-α-Syn) mostly in vitro after the incubation with PBS, which leaves o-α-Syn non-phosphorylated and does not reflect actual physiologic conditions in PD patients. The present study aimed to assess the pathogenic role of o-α-Syn while addressing the above issues using o-α-Syn incubated with PD plasma. Several α-Syn oligomer types were prepared by incubating recombinant human α-Syn with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and plasma samples from normal controls (NS) and PD patients. O-α-Syn incubated with PD plasma (o-α-Syn-PD), moderately or highly phosphorylated at serine 129, induced cell death more substantially compared with the PBS and NS groups. PD plasma exhibited reduced PP2A activity and ceramide levels, promoting the phosphorylation of o-α-Syn. In agreement, ceramide addition alleviated o-α-Syn-PD cytotoxicity. In vivo, o-α-Syn-PD significantly reduced dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and could be transferred to the cortex, hippocampus, and other parts of the brain. **** administered o-α-Syn-PD exhibited significant PD-like dyskinesia changes in a short period of time. Current reports have assessed the toxicity of oligomeric α-Syn (o-α-Syn) mostly in vitro after the incubation with PBS, which leaves o-α-Syn non-phosphorylated and does not reflect actual physiologic conditions in PD patients. The present study aimed to assess the pathogenic role of o-α-Syn while addressing the above issues using o-α-Syn incubated with PD plasma. Several α-Syn oligomer types were prepared by incubating recombinant human α-Syn with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and plasma samples from normal controls (NS) and PD patients. O-α-Syn incubated with PD plasma (o-α-Syn-PD), moderately or highly phosphorylated at serine 129, induced cell death more substantially compared with the PBS and NS groups. PD plasma exhibited reduced PP2A activity and ceramide levels, promoting the phosphorylation of o-α-Syn. In agreement, ceramide addition alleviated o-α-Syn-PD cytotoxicity. In vivo, o-α-Syn-PD significantly reduced dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and could be transferred to the cortex, hippocampus, and other parts of the brain. Mice administered o-α-Syn-PD exhibited significant PD-like dyskinesia changes in a short period of time.   • Vaccination against HPV seems to be a good approach for prevention of cervical cancer and genital warts. But in Iran we are confronted with lack of evidence for its cost-effectiveness whereas its consumption is dramatically increasing. This was a cross- sectional study. We used a questionnaire including 5 sections as follows; Patients demographic information, Patients medical history, Pregnancy and lactation considerations, Gardasil prescription characteristics and HPV infection characteristics. Prescriber with adherence to guideline were defined as those prescribing Gardasil for correct age range and indication with accurate dosage and administration. Descriptive statistics for variables was shown by frequency (percent) or mean (± SD) and evaluation of relation between categorical variables was performed by using Chi-square test. Total 566 Gardasil recipients participated in the study. There were mostly female with mean age of 28.1 (± 6.68). For 128 (22.6%) participants Gardasil prescribed correctly considering both age range (9-26 years) and indication (prophylactic). From this group, 80 participants (14.1%/566) have received accurate Gardasil dosage and interval (prescriber had adherence to guideline). Patients' out of pocket payment in guidelines adherent prescriptions was a seventh of total costs obtained from 566 consumers. Gynecologists significantly prescribed for prophylaxis higher than other specialties (p-value = 0.01). Prescribers' practice in administrating Gardasil is obviously not appropriate and it is imposing burdensome cost to community and government. On the other hand, we have encountered with increasing rate of its use in Iran in past years. Therefore, we are in urgent need for appropriate interventions in national level and prompt supervision to regulate Gardasil consumption.Reduced graft function (RGF) in donor renal transplant recipients is caused by oxidative damage due to extensive ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury during transplantation. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a promising biomarker to detect tubular injury early after renal transplantation. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a potent antioxidant that can reduce I/R injury by improving oxidative damage. The aim of the present study is to assess the efficacy of NAC in improving graft function and reducing renal tubular injury in deceased donor renal transplant recipients. A double-blind, randomized clinical trial was conducted on 50 deceased donor renal transplant recipients. The patients were randomized into two groups, receiving either 600 mg NAC twice daily, or placebo (days 0 to 5). Results were assessed based on the rate of RGF, levels of plasma NGAL (p-NGAL) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The rate of RGF was significantly lower in the patients receiving NAC vs. placebo (21.4% vs. 50%). The measurement of p-NGAL levels showed that the patients in the NAC group had significantly greater reduction of p-NGAL by both days 1 and 5 post-transplantation than those in the placebo group. A near steady-state eGFR level was reached by week 1 in the NAC group, however, the improvement of eGFR was significantly slower in the placebo group and a near steady-state was only achieved by week 4. NAC has promising potential in reducing tubular injury and improving graft function, evidenced by significant reduction in the rate of RGF and levels of p-NGAL.Atropa komarovii generates tropane alkaloids and three other compounds such as hyoscyamine. Root culture, by utilizing leaves explants was contaminated by Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATCC 15834, a strain with the paired vector. We examined the effects of NS-targeting siRNAs on the expression of NS in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 human breast cancer cell lines by the Real-time polymerase chain reaction method. In addition, we investigated the correlation between knockdown of NS and viability rates and apoptosis induction in MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468 cell lines using the MTT assay and annexin V/PI staining, respectively. The NS-targeting siRNAs inhibited the viability of the cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner and induced apoptosis after 48 h in the cells. Thus, consistent with previous articles, this protein can be one of the regulators related to the inhibition of apoptosis and the increased viability of tumor-initiating cells in human breast cancer cell lines as well as other cancers.COVID-19 is currently causing concern in the medical community as the virus is spreading around the world. It has a heavy global burden, particularly in low-income countries. The clinical spectrum of COVID-19 pneumonia ranges from mild to critically ill cases and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. An expert panel was held and an internal protocol was developed to manage the COVID-19 induced ARDS according to WHO recommendations and NIH guidelines. Different therapeutic regimens were employed on this protocol based on the ARDS severity and the patients' special characteristics. The mortality rate, the rate of survivors, and non-survivors were reported. Of the 231 suspected cases of COVID-19 admitted to the hospital during two weeks, 72 patients were admitted to ICU with diagnosis confirmed by RT-PCR. In total, mortality in the ICU was 25% (n = 18) among ARDS patients over two weeks. COVID-19 induced ARDS is a major concern. The rapid progression of ARDS needs specific protocol based on patients' characteristics and rapid action.

  • The use of recombinant Prx1 or Prx2 can be an efficient approach for the prevention and treatment of renal I/R injury.Oral delivery is considered as the most preferred and yet most challenging mode of drug administration; especially a fragile and sensitive peptide like insulin that shows extremely low bioavailability through the gastro-intestinal (***) route. To address this problem, we have designed a novel drug delivery system (DDS) using precipitation-induced Barium (Ba) salt particles. The DDS can load insulin molecules and transport them through the *** route. There were several in vitro simulation tests carried out to prove the efficiency of Ba salt particles as oral delivery candidates. All three Ba salt particles (BaSO4, BaSO3, and BaCO3) showed very good loading of insulin (>70% in all formulations) and a degree of resistance throughout a wide range of pHs from basic to acidic conditions when assessed by spectrophotometry. Particles and insulin-associated particles were morphologically assessed and characterized using FE-SEM and FT-IR. A set of tests were designed and carried out with mucin to predict whether the pael started to show a slight rise at 3rd h and by 4th h, it was **** to baseline level. As an important signature, pathways related to a response to DNA damage (e.g., p53 signaling and mismatch repair) dominate those upregulated by Corexit 9527 and Corexit 9500.
    The use of recombinant Prx1 or Prx2 can be an efficient approach for the prevention and treatment of renal I/R injury.Oral delivery is considered as the most preferred and yet most challenging mode of drug administration; especially a fragile and sensitive peptide like insulin that shows extremely low bioavailability through the gastro-intestinal (GIT) route. To address this problem, we have designed a novel drug delivery system (DDS) using precipitation-induced Barium (Ba) salt particles. The DDS can load insulin molecules and transport them through the GIT route. There were several in vitro simulation tests carried out to prove the efficiency of Ba salt particles as oral delivery candidates. All three Ba salt particles (BaSO4, BaSO3, and BaCO3) showed very good loading of insulin (>70% in all formulations) and a degree of resistance throughout a wide range of pHs from basic to acidic conditions when assessed by spectrophotometry. Particles and insulin-associated particles were morphologically assessed and characterized using FE-SEM and FT-IR. A set of tests were designed and carried out with mucin to predict whether the pael started to show a slight rise at 3rd h and by 4th h, it was back to baseline level. However, although BaSO3 particles with loaded insulin showed a trend of reduction in blood glucose level, the reduction was not found to be significant (p less then 0.05) at any point in time. Many analytical chemistry methods exist to measure sugars, yet a direct comparison of methods that can measure all three simultaneously, and trehalose in particular, from low sample volumes, are sparse. Using the honey bee as a model, we directly compare the leading current methods of using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with an evaporative light-scattering detector and Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine which method would be better for measuring trehalose, glucose, and fructose in terms of reproducibility, accuracy, and sensitivity. Furthermore, we injected the enzyme inhibitors trehalozin (a trehalase inhibitor) and sorbose (a trehalase p-synthase inhibitor) to manipulate the trehalose levels in honey bee foragers as a proof of concept that this sugar can be altered independently of hemolymph glucose and fructose levels. Overall the HPLC method was less reproducible for measuring fructose and glucose, and it also had lower sensitivity for measuring trehalose. Consequently, significant differences in trehalose levels within the forager class were only detected with the GC-MS and not the HPLC method. Lastly, using the GC-MS method in the follow up study we found that trehalozin and sorbose causes a significant increase and decrease of trehalose levels respectively, in forager honey bees, independent of the glucose and fructose levels, ten minutes after injection. Taken together, these methods will provide useful tools for future studies exploring the many different physiological functional roles that trehalose can play in maintaining insect energetic homeostasis.Ascosphaera apis is a widespread fungal pathogen of honeybee larvae that results in chalkbrood disease, leading to heavy losses for the beekeeping industry in China and many other countries. Here, more than 23.97 Gb of clean reads was generated from long-read sequencing of A. apis mycelia, including 464,043 circular consensus sequences (CCS) and 394,142 full-length non-chimeric (FLNC) reads. In total, we identified 174,095 high-confidence transcripts covering 5141 known genes with an average length of 2728 bp. We also discovered 2405 genic loci and 11,623 isoforms that have not been annotated yet within the current reference genome. Additionally, 16,049, 10,682, 4520 and 7253 of the discovered transcripts have annotations in the Non-redundant protein (Nr), Clusters of Eukaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOG), Gene Ontology (GO), and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases. Moreover, 1205 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were identified, which have less exons, shorter exon and intron lengths, shorter transcript lengths, lower GC percent, lower expression levels, and fewer alternative splicing (AS) evens, compared with protein-coding transcripts. A total of 253 members from 17 transcription factor (TF) families were identified from our transcript datasets. Finally, the expression of A. apis isoforms was validated using a molecular approach. Overall, this is the first report of a full-length transcriptome of entomogenous fungi including A. apis. Our data offer a comprehensive set of reference transcripts and hence contributes to improving the genome annotation and transcriptomic study of A. apis.Sperm cryopreservation is a tool for the conservation of the genetic material of animals of genetic importance or for species preservation. Comparative genomic and proteomic characterization of a helical and motile wild-type Spiroplasma strain and a non-helical, non-motile natural variant helped delineate the specific roles of MreB5. Moreover, complementation of the non-helical strain with MreB5 restored its helical shape and motility by a kink-based mechanism described for Spiroplasma [12]. Earlier studies had proposed that length changes in fibril filaments are responsible for the change in handedness of the helical cell and kink propagation during motility [13].

  • Inosine is ubiquitous and essential in many biological processes, including RNA-editing. In addition, oxidative stress on RNA has been a topic of increasing interest due, in part, to its potential role in the development/progression of disease. In this work we probed the ability of three reverse transcriptases (RTs) to catalyze the synthesis of cDNA in the presence of RNA templates containing inosine (I), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroinosine (8oxo-I), guanosine (G), or 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoG), and explored the impact that these purine derivatives have as a function of position. To this end, we used 29-mers of RNA (as template) containing the modifications at position-18 and reverse transcribed DNA using 17-mers, 18-mers, or 19-mers (as primers). Generally reactivity of the viral RTs, AMV / HIV / MMLV, towards cDNA synthesis was similar for templates containing G or I as well as for those with 8-oxoG or 8-oxoI. Notable differences are 1) the use of 18-mers of DNA (to explore cDNA synthesis past the lesion/modi of inosine and/or oxidatively generated lesions have on viral processes and adds to previous reports where I codes exclusively like G. However, it has been revealed from the recent empirical studies that little attention is given on grammar learning with the proper instructional materials design and the motivational framework for designing an efficient mobile-assisted grammar learning tool. This paper hence, reports a preliminary study that investigated learner motivation when a mobile-assisted tool for tense learning was used. This study applied the Attention-Relevance-Confidence-Satisfaction (ARCS) model. It was hypothesized that with the use of the designed mobile- assisted tense learning tool students would be motivated to learn grammar (English tense). In addition, with the increase of motivation, performance outcome in paper- based test would also be improved. With the purpose to investigate the impact of the tool, a sequential mixed-method research design was employed with the use of three research instruments; Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS), a paper-based test and an interview protocol using a semi-structured interview. Participants were 115 undergraduate students, who were enrolled in a remedial English course. The findings showed that with the effective design of instructional materials, students were motivated to learn grammar, where they were positive at improving their attitude towards learning (male 86%, female 80%). The IMMS findings revealed that students' motivation increased after using the tool. Moreover, students improved their performance level that was revealed from the outcome of paper-based instrument. Therefore, it is confirmed that the study contributed to designing an effective multimedia based instructions for a mobile-assisted tool that increased learners' motivational attitude which resulted in an improved learning performance.In the age of machine learning, building programs that take advantage of the speed and specificity of algorithm development can greatly aid efforts to quantify and interpret changes in animal behavior in response to abiotic environmental factors, like temperature. For both endotherms and ectotherms, temperature can affect everything from daily energy budgets to nesting behaviors. For instance, in birds environmental temperature plays a key role in shaping parental incubation behavior and temperatures experienced by embryos. Recent research indicates that temperatures experienced by embryos affect viability and are important in shaping fitness-related traits in young birds, sparking renewed interest in relationships among environmental factors, parental incubation behavior, and incubation temperature. Incubation behavior of birds can be monitored non-invasively by placing thermal probes into the nest and analyzing temperature fluctuations that occur as parents attend and leave the nest (on- and off-bouts, resp ecologists to interpret a critical parental care behavior that can be used across diverse incubation scenarios and species. Although specifically designed for quantifying avian incubation, NestIQ has the potential for broader applications, including basking and nesting behaviors of non-avian reptiles in relation to ambient temperature.
    Inosine is ubiquitous and essential in many biological processes, including RNA-editing. In addition, oxidative stress on RNA has been a topic of increasing interest due, in part, to its potential role in the development/progression of disease. In this work we probed the ability of three reverse transcriptases (RTs) to catalyze the synthesis of cDNA in the presence of RNA templates containing inosine (I), 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroinosine (8oxo-I), guanosine (G), or 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanosine (8-oxoG), and explored the impact that these purine derivatives have as a function of position. To this end, we used 29-mers of RNA (as template) containing the modifications at position-18 and reverse transcribed DNA using 17-mers, 18-mers, or 19-mers (as primers). Generally reactivity of the viral RTs, AMV / HIV / MMLV, towards cDNA synthesis was similar for templates containing G or I as well as for those with 8-oxoG or 8-oxoI. Notable differences are 1) the use of 18-mers of DNA (to explore cDNA synthesis past the lesion/modi of inosine and/or oxidatively generated lesions have on viral processes and adds to previous reports where I codes exclusively like G. Our findings that exercise led to a trend toward improved spatial short-term memory, reduced brain inflammation, markedly increased neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus, and a reduction in hippocampal amyloid-beta deposits are consistent with other reports on the impact of exercise on the progression of Alzheimer's related symptoms in mouse models. Notably, we did not observe any impact of wheel running on overall baseline blood flow nor on the incidence of non-flowing capillaries, a mechanism we recently identified as one contributing factor to cerebral blood flow deficits in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. Overall, our findings add to the emerging picture of differential effects of exercise on cognition and blood flow in Alzheimer's disease pathology by showing that capillary stalling is not decreased following exercise.Language learning is an emerging research area where researchers have done significant contributions by incorporating technological assistantship (i.e., computer- and mobile-assistant learning). However, it has been revealed from the recent empirical studies that little attention is given on grammar learning with the proper instructional materials design and the motivational framework for designing an efficient mobile-assisted grammar learning tool. This paper hence, reports a preliminary study that investigated learner motivation when a mobile-assisted tool for tense learning was used. This study applied the Attention-Relevance-Confidence-Satisfaction (ARCS) model. It was hypothesized that with the use of the designed mobile- assisted tense learning tool students would be motivated to learn grammar (English tense). In addition, with the increase of motivation, performance outcome in paper- based test would also be improved. With the purpose to investigate the impact of the tool, a sequential mixed-method research design was employed with the use of three research instruments; Instructional Materials Motivation Survey (IMMS), a paper-based test and an interview protocol using a semi-structured interview. Participants were 115 undergraduate students, who were enrolled in a remedial English course. The findings showed that with the effective design of instructional materials, students were motivated to learn grammar, where they were positive at improving their attitude towards learning (male 86%, female 80%). The IMMS findings revealed that students' motivation increased after using the tool. Moreover, students improved their performance level that was revealed from the outcome of paper-based instrument. Recent researches indicate that the entry of EBOV into cells requires integrated and functional lipid rafts. Whilst lipid rafts have been hypothesized to play a role in virus entry, there is a current lack of supporting data. One major technical hurdle is the lack of effective approaches for observing viral entry. To provide evidence on the involvement of lipid rafts in the entry process of EBOV, we generated the fluorescently labeled Ebola virus like particles (VLPs), and utilized single-particle tracking (SPT) to visualize the entry of fluorescent Ebola VLPs in live cells and the interaction of Ebola VLPs with lipid rafts. In this study, we demonstrate the compartmentalization of Ebola VLPs in lipid rafts during entry process, and inform the essential function of lipid rafts for the entry of Ebola virus. As such, our study provides evidence to show that the raft integrity is critical for Ebola virus pathogenesis and that lipid rafts can serve as potential targets for the development of novel therapeutic strategies.
    tExtracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving therapy for severe, reversible cardiopulmonary failure, but data regarding its use in pregnancy and the postpartum period are limited. We sought to quantify survival of pregnant and postpartum women necessitating ECMO in a contemporary cohort at a single tertiary institution.

    All women of reproductive age (14-44 years), who underwent ECMO at our institution between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017, were identified using a query of hospital encounters for ECMO-related CPT codes. We manually reviewed all charts of women of reproductive age; women who were pregnant or <6 weeks postpartum at the time of ECMO initiation were included. Clinical characteristics and maternal and fetal outcomes are described.

    In this study, 54 women of reproductive age underwent ECMO for cardiopulmonary failure. Of those, 9 (17%) were pregnant or <6 weeks postpartum at the time of ECMO initiation 4 antepartum, 1 intraoperative at the time of cesarean delivein pregnant and intrapartum women. In this generally young and healthy population, ECMO has the potential to increase the survival rates of both mother and fetus and should be considered a salvage therapy for peripartum women with reversible forms of cardiorespiratory failure.In this study, we analyse the role of forced lockdowns on electricity consumption behaviour and its effect on momentary transition in electricity use. Electricity consumption data for residential, commercial and industrial consumers within the Lagos metropolis representing 259 electrical feeder locations were collected and analysed under three scenarios first, we analyse a business-as-usual scenario without a lockdown; secondly, we analyse the case of a partial lockdown; and finally, we analyse the case of a total lockdown. The study revealed that aside government announcement of the lockdown, certain social practices triggered changes in electricity consumption and use leading to momentary energy transition. Within the residential sector, increased cooking, home laundry, showering, and some professional practices that moved to the homes impacted on higher electricity consumption. Reduced manufacturing practices limited to those involved in food, personal care and pharmaceutical products led to a reduction in electricity use within the industrial sector, while reduced electricity use in the commercial sector was triggered mainly by a scaling down of trading services to essentials. The study concludes by highlighting the impact of changes in electricity demand and consumption under these scenarios and its implications for energy transition and electricity planning.The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a worldwide disruption. Accordingly, this paper aims to contribute to the transdisciplinary resilience dialogue on the health maintenance and life-supporting processes of the biosphere by focusing on the COVID-19 crisis. It explores various frameworks that are contributing to the transdisciplinary meta-perspective of resilience. Moreover, it proposes a humanistic approach based on not only controlling strategies involving containment and social isolation but also the ecological balance considering the human, societal, and ecological health as a system-wide emergent property. Conceptual frameworks of resilience are discussed-as mapping methodologies to structure the discourse-focusing on the role of leadership and empowerment. Furthermore, some positive insights are discussed, as a transdisciplinary integrator and solidarity facilitator of coping, mitigation, and decision-making in the time of uncertainty and anxiety created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Findings from the global analyses of the circular RNA landscape argue that pro-, and likely, anti-viral functions are executed by circRNAs that modulate viral gene expression as well as host pathways. Because of their long half-lives, circRNAs likely play hitherto unknown, important roles in viral pathogenesis.As type-I-allergies show an increasing prevalence in the general populace, orthodontic patients may also be affected by histamine release during treatment. Human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF) are regulators of orthodontic tooth movement. However, the impact of histamine on PDLF in this regard is unknown. Therefore PDLF were incubated without or with an orthodontic compressive force of 2g/cm2 with and without additional histamine. To assess the role of histamine-1-receptor (H1R) H1R-antagonist cetirizine was used. Expression of histamine receptors and important mediators of orthodontic tooth movement were investigated. PDLF expressed histamine receptors H1R, H2R and H4R, but not H3R. Histamine increased the expression of H1R, H2R and H4R as well as of interleukin-6, cyclooxygenase-2, and prostaglandin-E2 secretion even without pressure application and induced receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL) protein expression with unchanged osteoprotegerin secretion. These effects were not observed in presence of H1R antagonist cetirizine.     Despite overall increase in HIV testing, more men than women remain untested. In 2018, 92% of Ugandan women but only 67% of men had tested for HIV. Understanding men's needs and concerns for testing could guide delivery of HIV testing services (HTS) to them. We assessed the prevalence of testing, associated factors and men's perspectives on HIV testing in urban and peri-urban communities in Central Uganda.

    We conducted a parallel-convergent mixed-methods study among men in Kampala and Mpigi districts from August to September 2018. Using two-stage sampling, we selected 1340 men from Mpigi. We administered a structured questionnaire to collect data on HIV testing history, socio-demographics, self-reported HIV risk-related behaviors, barriers and facilitators to HIV testing. We also conducted 10 focus-groups with men from both districts to learn their perspectives on HIV testing. We used modified Poisson regression to assess factors associated with HIV testing and inductive thematic analysis to identify barrtesting uptake, reduce gender disparity and initiate risk reduction interventions.This study investigated the caries-preventive effect of 445 nm laser radiation in combination with fluoride on the prevention of white spot lesions. Previously, several studies have indicated the ability of 488 nm argon ion laser irradiation to reduce early enamel demineralization. A diode laser (445 nm) could be an alternative technology for possible caries-preventive potential. Each sample of a group of seventeen caries-free bovine teeth was treated in four different ways on four different zones of the labial surface control/no treatment (C), laser irradiation only (L) (0.3 W, 60 s and applied dose of 90 J/cm2), amine fluoride application only (10,000 ppm and pH 3.9) (F), and amine fluoride application followed by laser irradiation (FL). After treatment, the teeth were subjected to a demineralization solution (pH 4.3 for 48 h at 37 °C) to induce subsurface lesions. After sectioning, the teeth were examined by light microscopy. Three teeth were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The depths of the subsurface lesions in the C, L, F, and FL groups were 103.01 (± 13.04), 96.99 (± 14.51), 42.59 (± 17.13), and 24.35 (± 11.38) μm, respectively. The pairwise group comparison showed the following results p less then 0.001 for FL versus C, FL versus L, F versus C, and F versus L, p = 0.019 for FL versus F and p = 0.930 for L versus C. The SEM micrographs support the light-microscopic examination. The results of the current study have shown that using relatively low irradiation settings of 445 nm laser on fluoridated enamel may be effective for prevention of white spot lesions.Active workstations are associated with improved health outcomes, but differences in cognitive and typing outcomes between the types of active workstations are unclear. We addressed two main questions (1) Are there differences in cognitive and typing performance between seated and active workstations? (2) Are there differences in cognitive and typing performance between cycling and treadmill workstations, specifically? Participants included 137 healthy young adults (74 female, mean age = 20.8 years) who completed two sessions. At session one (baseline), all participants completed cognitive and typing tests including the Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test, a typing test, and a flanker task while sitting at rest. At session two, participants were randomized to an active workstation group (treadmill or cycling desk) during which they performed the tests listed above in a randomized fashion, using alternate versions when available. Participants showed significantly better attention and cognitive control scores during the active session as compared to the seated session, but worse verbal memory scores during the active session. Participants were faster and more accurate at typing during the active session relative to the seated session. There were no significant differences between cycling or treadmill workstations on any cognitive or typing outcomes. Improvements during active sessions may be influenced by practice effects, although alternate forms were used when possible. We conclude that active workstations do not seem to largely impact cognitive abilities, with the exception of a slight decrease in verbal memory performance. Findings suggest active workstations, whether walking or cycling, are useful to improve physical activity, particularly when completing tasks that do not require verbal memory recall.

The pairwise group comparison showed the following results p less then 0.001 for FL versus C, FL versus L, F versus C, and F versus L, p = 0.019 for FL versus F and p = 0.930 for L versus C. The SEM micrographs support the light-microscopic examination. The results of the current study have shown that using relatively low irradiation settings of 445 nm laser on fluoridated enamel may be effective for prevention of white spot lesions.Active workstations are associated with improved health outcomes, but differences in cognitive and typing outcomes between the types of active workstations are unclear. We addressed two main questions (1) Are there differences in cognitive and typing performance between seated and active workstations? (2) Are there differences in cognitive and typing performance between cycling and treadmill workstations, specifically? Participants included 137 healthy young adults (74 female, mean age = 20.8 years) who completed two sessions. At session one (baseline), all participants completed cognitive and typing tests including the Rey-Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test, a typing test, and a flanker task while sitting at rest. At session two, participants were randomized to an active workstation group (treadmill or cycling desk) during which they performed the tests listed above in a randomized fashion, using alternate versions when available. Participants showed significantly better attention and cognitive control scores during the active session as compared to the seated session, but worse verbal memory scores during the active session. Participants were faster and more accurate at typing during the active session relative to the seated session. There were no significant differences between cycling or treadmill workstations on any cognitive or typing outcomes. Improvements during active sessions may be influenced by practice effects, although alternate forms were used when possible. We conclude that active workstations do not seem to largely impact cognitive abilities, with the exception of a slight decrease in verbal memory performance. Findings suggest active workstations, whether walking or cycling, are useful to improve physical activity, particularly when completing tasks that do not require verbal memory recall.
