  • A responsive and well-functioning newborn referral system is a cornerstone to the continuum of child health care; however, health system and client-related barriers negatively impact the referral system. Due to the complexity and multifaceted nature of newborn referral processes, studies on newborn referral systems have been limited. The objective of this study was to assess the barriers for effective functioning of the referral system for preterm, low birth weight, and sick newborns across the primary health care units in 3 contrasting regions of Ethiopia.

    A qualitative assessment using interviews with mothers of preterm, low birth weight, and sick newborns, interviews with facility leaders, and focus group discussions with health care providers was conducted in selected health facilities. Data were coded using an iteratively developed codebook and synthesized using thematic content analysis.

    Petrol is the non-specific term for petroleum which is used for inside combustion of engines. Petrol filling workers are highly vulnerable to occupational exposure to these harmful substances which lead to hemato-toxicity and blood disorders such as leukemia, aplastic anemia, and dysplastic bone marrow. Thus, this study was aimed to assess hematological parameters of petrol filling workers in Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia.

Studies have shown that inflammasomes play an important role in the inflammation following SCI, and apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a card (ASC) is the adaptor protein shared by inflammasomes. Therefore, we speculated that inhibiting ASC may improve the local microenvironment of injured spinal cord. Here, CRID3, a blocker of ASC oligomerization, was used to study its effect on the local microenvironment and the possible role in neuroprotection following SCI.

    Murine SCI model was created using an Infinite Horizon impactor at T9 vertebral level with a force of 50 kdynes and CRID3 (50 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally injected following injury. ASC and its downstream molecules in inflammasome signaling pathway were measured by western blot. The immune cell subsets were detected by immunohistofluorescence (IHF) and flow cytometry (FCM). The spinal cord fibrosis area, neuron survival, myelin preservation, and functional recovery were assessed.

  • This study provides the fundamental information for future successful strategies for pest management.New succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor fungicides (SDHIs), isopyrazam, pyraziflumid and isofetamid were introduced in the Japanese market in 2017-2018 to control powdery mildew on cucumber. SDHI resistance of the disease fungus (Podosphaera xanthii) was first reported during 2008-2009 against boscalid. Then, penthiopyrad which belongs to SDHIs was introduced in 2010, but subsequent monitoring study was not performed. We investigated the sensitivity of P. xanthii field isolates from Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, to SDHIs and SdhB, SdhC and SdhD gene mutations, using a leaf disc assay and SDH gene analysis. A total of 19 out of the 22 selected isolates showed resistance to SDHIs. The 19 isolates were phenotypically categorized into three types Resistant I as moderately and Resistant II as highly resistant to penthiopyrad, isopyrazam and pyraziflumid but sensitive to isofetamid and Resistant III as highly resistant to isofetamid but sensitive to the other three SDHIs. SDH gene analysis revealed that Resistant I and III isolates carried a substitution in PxD-S121P and PxC-A86V, respectively. Resistant II carried three different substitutions PxC-G151R, PxC-G172D, and PxD-H137R. Among 127 isolates sampled from 16 cucumber greenhouses, 54 exhibited Resistant I phenotype and carried only PxD-S121P. Fifty-six isolates exhibited Resistant II and carried PxC-G151R (four isolates), PxC-G172D (24), and PxD-H137R (28). Only two isolates expressed the Resistant III phenotype carrying PxC-A86V. Six cDNA libraries were constructed from 3 d-old P. neglecta mycelia (three SPA-infected and three untreated groups) and 29,850 expressed genes were obtained by Illumina HiSeq4000 sequencing. Compared with controls, 3268 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in SPA-treated groups, including 1879 upregulated and 1389 downregulated genes. Most DEGs were involved in the metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids, as well as cell structure and genetic information processing. These findings were further confirmed by decreased conductivity, RNA and protein content, and activities of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent malate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase. Moreover, qRT-PCR verified the reliability of the transcriptome results. After treatment with SPA at different concentrations for 60 min, the expressions of three cell wall degrading enzyme-related genes (PnEG, PnBG, and PnPG) were all suppressed. We have developed a panel of primers and assessed the genotoxicity of the following pesticides imidacloprid, rotenone, deltamethrin, difenocanozole, malathion, metribuzin, penconazole, esfenvalerate, and dithianon. All pesticides (except imidacloprid) inhibited mitochondrial respiration fueled by pyruvate + malate; the strongest effect was observed for rotenone and difenocanozole. Three pesticides (dithianon, rotenone, and difenocanozole) affected the rate of H2O2 production. To study the pesticide-induced DNA damage in vitro and in vivo, we used three different mtDNA. The mtDNA damage was observed for all studied pesticides. Most of the studied pesticides caused significant damage to mtDNA in vitro and in vivo when ingested. Our results indicate that all tested pesticides, including herbicides and fungicides, can have a toxic effect on pollinators. However, the extent of pesticide-induced mtDNA damage in the flight muscles was significantly less upon the contact compared to the oral administration.Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is an important plant virus that led to significant losses in the crops worldwide. The results demonstrated that the antiviral effects of UA and 4-methoxycoumarin were as effective as those of the commercial agent lentinan, in either the protective effect, inactivation effect or curative effect. In addition, both plant-derived compounds could induce the resistance responses of tobacco plants against TMV, showing increased antioxidant enzyme activities (*** and POD) and H2O2 accumulation in tobacco leaves after treatment with UA or 4-methoxycoumarin, along with highly expressed regulatory and defence genes in the salicylic acid signaling pathway. Meanwhile, electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde experiments indicated that these effects did not result in phytotoxicity or damage to the leaf plasma membrane of tobacco plants.

  • More work needs to be done to elucidate mechanisms that contribute to socioculturally-informed mental illness stigma interventions for racialized communities and traditionally marginalized populations.Attraction effects arise when a comprehender erroneously retrieves a distractor instead of a target item during memory retrieval operations. In Korean, considerable processing difficulties occur in the agreement relation checking between a subject and an honorific-marked predicate when an intervening distractor carries a non-honorific feature. We investigate how attraction effects are managed during the processing of Korean subject-predicate honorific agreement by two Korean-speaking groups with different language use experience backgrounds college students and airline workers. Results showed that both groups demonstrated stable knowledge of the honorific agreement in the acceptability judgment task.     Diabetic foot (DF) is a common complication of diabetes with insidious onset, making it difficult for patients to receive timely diagnosis and treatment. This study aimed to evaluate the change in lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) and interleukin-18 (IL-18) in the serum of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) pa-tients with and without DF, thereby assessing the association between progression of DF and levels of Lp-PLA2 together with IL-18.

Meanwhile, 54 patients receiving traditional imaging guided reoperation matched by age, gender and distribution of hepatobiliary stones to each case were selected as controls (group B). The perioperative and long-term follow-up outcomes were compared between the two groups.

MATERIAL AND METHODS We explored the suitability of triple composite scaffolds of SF/Cs/Alg at ratios of 1 1 0.5, 1 1 1, and 1 1 2 for 3D culture of CC cells, and used the dual composite scaffold of SF/Cs (1 1) as a control group. We analyzed the physicochemical characteristics of these scaffolds and studied cell adhesion, cell proliferation, migration, colony-forming ability, microstructure and ultrastructure, and spheroid-forming capacity of the commercially available CC cell line HCT-116 on the prepared scaffolds. RESULTS Our results show that SF/Cs/Alg (1 1 1) scaffolds demonstrated the best profile, the highest uniform porosity and connectivity, and excellent hydroscopicity, and also exhibited appropriate and controlled swelling and degradation characteristics. Thrombo-embolic-deterrent (TED) stockings with intermittent pneumatic compression devices (TED+IPC) have been used to improve venous return during the perioperative period.     In this single-center, prospective, randomized, controlled trial, 221 kidney and SPK transplant recipients were randomized to either wearing TED+IPC or MPA for six days postoperatively.     Postoperative ileus (POI) is a common complication of radical cystectomy (RC), occurring in 1.6-23.5% of cases. It is defined heterogeneously in the literature. Our objective was to compare clinical and cost-related outcomes of conventional and magnetic stents in patients undergoing deceased donor renal transplantation.

Thrombo-embolic-deterrent (TED) stockings with intermittent pneumatic compression devices (TED+IPC) have been used to improve venous return during the perioperative period. It is defined heterogeneously in the literature. POI increases hospital length of stay and postoperative morbidity. Factors such as age, epidural use, length of procedure, and blood loss may impact POI. In this study, we aimed to evaluate risk factors that contribute to POI in a cohort of patients managed with a comprehensive Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol. A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent RC from March 2015 to December 2016 at Vancouver General Hospital was performed. POI was defined a priori as insertion of nasogastric tube for nausea or vomiting, or failure to advance to a solid diet by the seventh postoperative day. To illustrate heterogeneity in previous studies, we also evaluated POI using other previously reported definitions in the RC literature.     Effective translation of evidence-based research into clinical practice requires assessment of the many factors that can impact implementation success. Research methods that draw on recognised implementation frameworks, such as the Promoting Action Research in Health Services (PARiHS) framework, and that test feasibility to gain information prior to full-scale roll-out, can support a more structured approach to implementation.

    This paper presents qualitative findings from a feasibility study in one cancer service of an online portal to operationalise a clinical pathway for the screening, assessment and management of anxiety and depression in adult cancer patients. The aim of this study was to explore staff perspectives on the feasibility and acceptance of a range of strategies to support implementation in order to inform the full-scale roll-out.

    Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen hospital staff holding a range of clinical, administrative and managerial roles, and with differing level arise. While the current feasibility study related to a specific implementation, strategies such as regular engagement with local stakeholders, and discussion of barriers arising in real-time during early testing is likely to be of benefit to all researchers and clinicians seeking to maximise the likelihood of long-term implementation success.
    While mobile health-based human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) interventions are often designed to promote health equity, systematic differences in the use of and access to mobile technologies may counteract that and widen treatment gaps. This systematic review applies an equity lens to investigate whether existing research provides adequate evidence on the ethical implications of mHealth technologies in HIV treatment and prevention.

    This study included a two-stage methodology, consisting of (a) a systematic review of systematic reviews and (b) an evidence synthesis of primary studies. For the review of reviews we searched eight electronic databases, eight electronic journals and Google Scholar. We also screened reference lists and consulted authors of included studies. Primary studies were extracted from eligible reviews. We based our data extraction and analysis on the Place of residence, Race, Occupation, Gender/Sex, Religion, Education, Socioeconomic status, Social capital and other disadvantage relatedffected by the epidemic.
    Despite the negative force of socio-demographic inequities and the emerging nature of mobile health technologies, evidence on the equity implications of mobile health interventions for HIV care remains scarce. Not knowing how the effects of mobile health technologies differ across population subgroups inevitably limits our capacities to equitably adopt, adjust and integrate mobile health interventions towards reaching those disproportionally affected by the epidemic.
    While studies have examined the impact of digital communication technology on healthcare, there is little exploration of how new models of digital care change the roles and identities of the health professional and patient. The purpose of the current study is to generate multidisciplinary reflections and questions around the use of digital consulting and the way it changes the meaning of being a patient and/or a health professional.

    We used a large pre-existing qualitative dataset from the Long-term Conditions Young People Networked Communication (LYNC) study which involved interviews with healthcare professionals and a group of 16-24 years patients with long-term physical and mental health conditions. We conducted a three-stage mixed methods analysis.     The current research aimed to develop a questionnaire for the evaluation of the staff viewpoints in mobile phone use in the delivery of their services and then to assess the primary health center staff attitudes toward this area.

    This was a two-stage cross-sectional study. In the initial stage, a questionnaire was constructed that tested their reliability and validity through Cronbach's alpha coefficient, multitrait/multi-item correlation matrix and multivariate method of factor analysis. In the second phase, we computed the raw score of each construct which was calculated by taking the mean of the responses of all the items in a particular construct. The normality of the scores for each construct was tested via Kolmogorov-Smirnov and various parametric/non-parametric statistical tests were applied to compare the responses of the subjects. After statistical tests, the final questionnaire was confirmed, including 28 items.

  • Treatment of eosinophilic dermatosis of hematologic malignancy (EDHM) has been challenging with a minimal response to several modalities. Only systemic corticosteroids have consistently proven successful in suppressing the rash; however, the response is often only partial, and symptoms tend to recur as the dosage is tapered. This demonstrates the need for effective maintenance therapy. Herein, we present a case of EDHM that, following a 1 month prednisone taper and brief trial of narrow-band ultraviolet B phototherapy, has remained well-controlled with omalizumab. This suggests that omalizumab may represent an effective therapeutic alternative in EDHM management with low long-term toxicity.
    Photoallergic contact dermatitis is one of the important parts of photodermatoses. The investigation of choice is photopatch testing. However, reports with photopatch test results from Asian countries are scarce. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of positive photopatch test reactions and to ascertain the common photoallergens among Thai patients during 1998-2018.

    We retrospectively reviewed the records of 339 patients who were clinically suspected of having photoallergic contact dermatitis and had undergone photopatch testing.

    A total of 44 photoallergic contact reactions in 38 patients (11.2%) were found. The positive photoallergic reactions were mainly found with organic ultraviolet filters and fragrances.

    Organic ultraviolet filter chemicals especially benzophenone-3 and fragrances were found to have a high prevalence of photoallergic contact reactions. Monitoring of the photoallergens employed in photopatch tests should be conducted periodically to provide the best patient care.

This study aimed to demonstrate the alterations of contents and expressions of proteins in seminal vesicle fluid (SVF) under CS. Fourteen adult rats were divided into control and CS groups (n = 7/each). Control rats were not exposed to stressor, while the CS animals were immobilised by restraint cage (4 hr/day) and followed by forced swimming (15 min/day) for consecutive 60 days. Biochemical substances and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in SVF were examined. Expressions of heat-shock protein 70 (Hsp70), caspases (Casp) 3 and 9, and tyrosine-phosphorylated (TyrPho) proteins were investigated in seminal vesicle tissue (SVT) and SVF. It was found that CS caused reductions of seminal epithelial height and secreted substance levels. Significantly, MDA levels in SVF and expressions of Hsp70, Casp and TyrPho proteins were increased in of CS animals.     To prospectively evaluate quality of life (QoL) and psychosocial outcomes in children with severe acute asthma (SAA) after pediatric intensive care (PICU) admission compared to children with SAA who were admitted to a general ward (GW). In addition, we assessed post-traumatic stress (PTS) and asthma-related QoL in the parents.

    A preplanned follow-up of 3-9 months of our nationwide prospective multicenter study, in which children with SAA admitted to a Dutch PICU (n=110) or GW (n=111) were enrolled between 2016-2018. Asthma-related QoL, PTS symptoms, emotional and behavioral problems, and social impact in children and/or parents were assessed with validated web-based questionnaires.

    We included 100 children after PICU and 103 after GW admission, with a response rate of 50% for the questionnaires. Median time to follow-up was 5 months (range 1-12 months). Time to reach full schooldays after admission was significantly longer in the PICU group (mean of 10 vs 4 days, p=0.001). Although deficits in the automatization of sensorimotor control have been highlighted, internal action representation allowing prediction has never before been investigated. In this study, we considered action representation of 18 adolescents with pure DD and 18 age-matched typical readers. Participants actually and mentally performed a visually guided pointing task involving strong spatiotemporal constraints (speed/accuracy trade-off paradigm). While actual and mental movement times of typical readers were isochronous and both conformed to Fitts' law, the movement times of dyslexics differed between conditions, and only the actual movement times conformed to Fitts' law. Furthermore, the quality of motor imagery correlated with word reading abilities. This suggests that the process of action representation is impaired in pure DD and supports the sensorimotor perspective of DD. Theoretical implications are discussed.

DMNT-enriched plants have great application potential to regulate insect behavior in the 'push & pull' strategy of pest management. However, de novo biosynthesis of DMNT in plants without a homoterpene metabolic pathway in their wild type is still not achieved, and the role of DMNT played in these plants and their interacted insects remains unclear.

    Cytochrome P450s and terpene synthases involved in homoterpenes biosynthesis in cotton plants were employed to generate DMNT-releasing tobacco plants. Single GhTPS14 transgenic Nicotiana tabacum only emitted (E)-nerolidol, the precursor of DMNT. Transgenic tobaccos expressing single GhCYP82Ls were unable to produce DMNT or TMTT, while DMNT was detected when exogenous (E)-nerolidol was added. Compared to wild-type plants, only co-expression of GhCYP82Ls and GhTPS14 in transgenic tobaccos triggered the constitutive release of single-component DMNT.

  • Fiber length is a key parameter for the mixture design of basalt fiber-reinforced hot mix asphalt (HMA), which significantly affects the mix performance. To evaluate the suitability of fiber lengths for HMA with different nominal maximum aggregate size (NMAS), basalt fiber with the lengths of 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15 mm were selected for dense graded gradations with different NMASs (namely, SUP-13, SUP-20, and SUP-25), so as to prepare the fiber-reinforced HMA mixtures. Then, the mix performance was evaluated by an indirect tensile asphalt cracking test (IDEAL-CT), a four-point bending beam fatigue test, a wheel tracking test, a uniaxial penetration test, a low temperature bending beam test, and a freeze-thaw splitting test. Based on the performance results, the optimum fiber length for each mix gradation was proposed by the normalization method. The results showed that adding basalt fiber can enhance the comprehensive performance of all three types of HMA to a great extent. Furthermore, fiber length presented remarkable impact on the crack resistance, the fatigue resistance of the HMA, and the low temperature crack resistance, but it had limited influence on the high temperature deformation resistance, and water stability. By combining FBPN with modified faster region convolutional neural network (faster-RCNN), a vehicle detection framework for aerial images is proposed. The focal loss function is adopted in the proposed framework to reduce the imbalance between easy and hard samples. The experimental results based on the VEDIA, USCAS-AOD, and DOTA datasets show that the proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art vehicle detection algorithms for aerial images.
    To introduce and evaluate a university vaccination training program, preparing final year Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) and Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) students to administer vaccinations to children and adults in community pharmacy and offsite (mobile and outreach) settings.

    Final year BPharm and MPharm students were trained to administer intramuscular vaccinations to adults and children. The education program embedded in pharmacy degree curriculum was congruent with the requirements of the Australian National Immunisation Education Framework. The training used a mix of pedagogies including online learning; interactive lectures; and simulation, which included augmented reality and role play. All pharmacy students completing the program in 2019 were required to carry out pre- and post-knowledge assessments. Student skill of vaccination was assessed using an objective structured clinical assessment rubric. Students were invited to complete pre and post questionnaires on confidence. The post questionnaire iowledge and confidence. Pharmacy students who complete such training should be able to administer vaccinations to children and adults, improving workforce capability. Mixed reality in the education of pharmacy students can be used to improve student satisfaction and enhance learning.

    To explore the anatomical features of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) and determine an effective approach for its preservation during endoscopic thyroidectomy (ET).

    From January 2017 to December 2018, a total of 405 consecutive patients with thyroid disease were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were divided into the ET group and the open thyroidectomy (OT) group according to the surgical approaches. There were 195 cases in the ET group including 43 males and 152 females, and 210 cases in the OT group including 65 males and 145 females. The dissection process of EBSLN, detection rate, distribution of identification methods of the EBSLN and rate of voice change were recorded.

    There were 205 EBSLNs detected under direct vision in ET group for a detection rate of 88.0%, while 158 EBSLNs were detected under direct vision in OT group for a detection rate of 58.1%.
